Indeed, only giving me the above option as well. I just bought a 20GB hard drive on eBay three days ago for the system, I was really hoping to nab that memory card. :( http://i36.tinypic.com/214plle.png

*Note: This is for an Arcade, maybe that's why?

I'm going to get the 512MB memory card for my brothers Arcade. I figure he can put it in his slot 2 and use his first memory card for game saves and such. I don't trust the refurbed 20 GB HDD...

Sweet deal. MS isn't going to lose much if naything on the refurb 20 gig drives. Maybe $10? Memory Cards I have no idea, their markup must be huge on those.

I guess next time [Xbox 720(?)] they'll all come with hard drives .

This is pretty much admitting that .

Man this thing is smart. I have a core but I think it checks to see if you have downloaded a ton of stuff. Like I have I have and says yeah your full of it and wont let you go through. They wanted to make sure no one abused this.

Via Kotaku...

It emerged last week that Microsoft's NXE upgrade would require 128MB of free space and might therefore be out of reach to some Arcade owners.

Microsoft promised that some kind of 'storage solution' was in the works and has just released details of an upgrade program to ensure under-specced consoles can receive the dashboard replacement.

www.xboxstorageupgrade.com recommends either clearing some space by removing saved content or entering your Serial Number and Console Id to see if you are eligible for either a free 512 MB memory card or a 20 GB hard-drive for $19.99. We have had unconfirmed rumors that the hard drives are refurbs. Microsoft has been contacted for comment.

Enjoy the New Xbox Experience and Xbox LIVE![Xbox Storage Upgrade - thanks to Magnum1024k for the tip]

The site can be found by going here (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/hardware/memoryupdate/default.htm) and following the link. The free memory card is only available to owners of 360s that lack storage devices or included memory cards too small to contain the update. In addition, the HDD is bundled with 3 months of LIVE Gold, so the cost is actually $30.

BTW, first deal post, so forgive any screw-ups. Thanks!

I JUST came here to post that and you beat me by minutes! :p

Anyway, REALLY good deal for arcade/core owners.

You might want to add that you can get the 20GB HDD for $20 OR the 20GB HDD with 3 months of live for $30.

I didn't see that option, I thought they forced the LIVE on you. That's pretty exciting, I'll have to look it up.

This is great news for me. I recently got an Arcade because I was too much of a miser to spend the extra for the HDD. Guess I lucked out.

What does this mean?

Meaning that in my case, I got an Arcade unit which includes a 256 card. Since the update only needs 128, they didn't offer a free card to me, only the discounted HDD.

Sorry for the poor phrasing.

That explains why Target was selling these on clearance for 24 dollars if you were lucky to find one. HAHAHAHA Sounds like a good deal and Microsoft is doing the right thing here. You wpild be stupid not to take the 20 gig HDD over the 512 MB

Correct me if I am wrong but if you have a core system, you can get a free memory card or the hard drive for $20. Arcade owners can only opt for the 20gb hard drive for $30 with 3 months of xbox live. I think the options are unique to each console owner.

I owned a premium and bought an arcade so I've already got a 20gb hard drive. I'd be tempted to buy another one except I really want a 60gb; the 20gb drive just isn't enough space for the game installs I want to do so I'm not seeing the 20gb as worth buying even if it'd only cost me $30. Memory card? I'd be down for a free memory card but having snagged a bunch of 64mb and 512mb cards for $5 a piece (thank you sears/sears essential/walmart clearance sales) I don't need another memory card.

I'm lost here. I have two arcades but I'm not eligible. I have under 100Mb free on each memory card. How is this thing determining "Congratulations! According to our records you have the necessary hardware and storage space to enjoy the new Xbox Experience"? Is it possible because my friend brought his HDD over for Rock Band 2 and connected it once that now my console is stained by that drive or what?

Looks that way. Some folks at Joystiq are saying that MS won't offer an upgrade for their Arcades that have (or apparently, have had) a HDD hooked up.

How do I find my console id if I can't turn on the system (3 red rings)? I see an id number by the serial number on the back but there is way more than the 12 digits needed. And even if I take out the serial # which is in the id # as well that only leaves me eight digits.

Would it screw up your system if you keep switching hard drives? I have a two-year-old core (purchased a 20 GB hard drive separately), but would like to get another 20 GB HD for movies, etc. with NetFlix coming. Not sure how much of a pain in the a** it would be to keep switching back and fourth, but I can't afford a 120GB drive either.

For $20, it might be worth a shot.

Qualified for the $20 (only) hard drive with no $10 3-month Live subscription for my Arcade unit. Here is my setup and why I think it happened.

I have a Pro unit and an Arcade unit. I'm on my 4th Pro unit from the red ring so when I saw that I was able to get an Arcade unit on Amazon last December for like $200, I figured I'd just buy it as a backup. I have my Pro unit hooked up to my main TV and my Arcade hooked up to my PC (second monitor of my dual monitor set up). Both are connected to my router and my profile is stored on my memory card. I play on both my Arcade and my Pro (usually when my wife wants to watch TV, etc.) by moving my memory card back and forth, usually with the save files. My hard drive for my pro is where I just download demos and extra content but I still keep my main saves for everything on my 256 gig memory card so I can switch between consoles with no problems. As of this past weekend, I was already down to less than 100 megs on that memory card and I never hooked up my 20 gig HD to my Arcade unit.

Microsoft probably saw that I was a user connecting to Xbox Live on an Arcade Unit with a memory card with less than the required space needed for the update and gave me the offer of just the hard drive only. I believe that if I had more than 128 megs when they performed the check, I would be ineligible for the hard drive offer. Also, I'm guessing that if I had ever hooked up a hard drive to my Arcade unit prior to their check, I would also be ineligible because they'd assume I really actually had a hard drive. I have no idea how the $10 3 month Gold thing happens. I'm guessing that's if you connect to Live on your Arcade unit but aren't a gold subscriber?

Cliffnotes: Seems like if you play on an Arcade unit and connect to Live without ever having a hard drive connected to your system and your memory card has less than 128 megs remaining, you will be eligible for the hard drive update on your Arcade unit.

I'm not sure. I just got an Arcade. I only have a few saves on it (I would guess I have 200+ MB free) and I qualified for the HD +3 Mos Xbox Live card for $30.

I was trying to figure this out too since it happened to my friend and most likely it will happen to myself. It might be much simpler than them having a record of you "connecting" to LIVE: consider that they have your download history tied to each console, and if your download history for your Arcade console contains any item greater than 256MB, they have a way of knowing that you can handle it and require no upgrade.

So yeah. I'm thinking download history. Which means I'm screwed for hard-drive-swapping between two consoles, which sucks 'cause I'd rather have hard-drive-swapping be an option instead of a requirement. Maybe someone will alert them to this position and have them fix it. That'd be nice.

No point in buying the premium anymore lol, unless you're dying for an extra 40 gigs.

That extra 40GB will certainly come in handy with all of the new features, mainly the optional installs, coming to the 360, which is why I upgraded to the 120GB. Plus, I guess the purchase could be swayed by what free games you want to get.

if your friend has an HDD or another memory card, why not? As long as he's downloaded the update on his system, you're fine; your memory card should still only need to hold your small profile.

I've been in the market for an Arcade for a little while now. Just waiting for a reason to bite. I'd jump on this for the cheap HD and 3 months of Live, but so far I can't tell whether buying the current Arcade (holiday bundle or not) with the 256 MB card would disqualify me from the promotion. How many people have gotten an Arcade recently, do NOT have a hard drive (or at least have never attached one to their machine), and have successfully gotten this deal?

I imagine within a day or so there will be enough forum posts to come to a consensus on exactly what is needed to get this deal. I just want to make sure I'll be able to if I pick up an Arcade soon.

Thanks!

This reminds me of the government bailout. Let's reward the people that were dumb enough to buy a 360 without a HD in the first place, why don't we. And like the poster above mentions, completely neglect the even dumber (but more forward-thinking) people who fell for buying a miniscule 64MB memory card (to go along with the 360 with a HD) which should have never even been offered in the first place. When the goofy DRM makes having that 64MB for backups pointless anyway. So the only thing its really good for is profiles, and if those won't fit any more. . .

Actually maybe I should say "cheap" since this is CAG instead of "dumb" but most people not here that did it are probably the "dumb" ones because they probably didn't have a source for a cheap HD to make up for the lack of one. So I guess props to Microsoft for rewarding the CAG's, anyway.

I got my Arcade a couple of weeks ago (with the free LEGO Batman on Amazon), and it qualified for the deal. Only have like 3 game saves on my 256MB card, so I don't think it goes by how much space you have left, just if you have a hard drive or not.

I know this isn't the right place for this, but I figure it'll get some attention here.

I've got a 20GB HD from my premium that I've just wiped clean. It's in great shape (still has the little protective sticker) and hasn't been banned/abused in any way. If anyone is interested in it, I'll gladly let it go for what Microsoft is charging + $5 shipping ($25 shipped). That's negotiable as well, and I've got a bunch of 1-month cards in case someone would rather create a similar bundle to what MS is putting together. Just send me a PM and I'll get back to you.

I'm not sure how they're basing this.

I have a 1-year old arcade unit that came with the 512 MB memory card. All I have on there are a few game saves.

I put in my serial and got the 20 GB drive for $19.99. Go figure.

Just bought an Arcade last night. It hasn't shipped yet so I haven't had the chance to see whether I'm eligible for the promo (though I'm pretty sure I am). But I wanted some advice and figured you guys would be the ones to ask:

My friend recently bought a 120 GB HD, and offered to sell me his old 20 GB drive if I bought an Arcade (this was before the Microsoft deal came up). If he matches the $20 price, is it better to take a HD that hasn't given him any problems but which he's had since the system's launch, or go with the refurbished drive?

The devil you know, or the devil you don't?

(If this isn't the best thread for this question, please direct me to something better.)

Thanks!

Seriously, though, I offered to compensate him so I'm more than willing to do so. I think you guys just confirmed my feeling about taking a known over an unknown, even if his drive is almost 3 years old. I can't remember reading anything about 360 drives going bad, anyway.

Just in case there was any confusion over yesterday’s announcement regarding Microsoft’s Xbox 360 memory upgrades, the gaming giant confirmed to Videogaming247 this morning that gamers in Europe who own the non-HD 360 will get the upgrade as well.

Just like in the States, you will need 128Mb of memory to run the New Xbox Experience, and will able to choose fro the following options:

General

* Active Live members with no storage or with a 64mb MU: Offered 512mb for free or 20GB HDD for £12.99
* Active Live members with 256 or 512 MU but no HDD: Offered 20GB HDD for £12.99
* Console has not connected to XBL 12 month and doesn’t possess MU: Offered 20gb HDD and 3 month Xbox Live £19.99

Arcade console

* Active Live subscribers without a HDD: Offered 20gb HDD for £12.99
* Non active Live subscriber without a HDD and not connected to XBL within 12 months: 20gb HDD + 3 month Xbox Live for £19.99

Just like American versions, you will need to go here to input your console’s serial number to find out if it is eligible for an upgrade.

Just an FYI....

in the US version

CORE owners are given the option of a free 512MB MU or a $20 20GB HDD upgrade.

Arcade (http://www.achieve360points.com/forums/showthread.php?p=898735#) owners are given the option of a $30 20GB HDD upgrade with 3 Months of Xbox Live.

The reason being that Arcade owners received a console with a 512MB MU already so they technically have the space for the upgdate... although not much.

keep in mind that the Arcade Consoles DO NOT include HD cables... so you'll have to buy those separate.

Also the reason the 20GB Pro consoles were discontinued is because the Pro now includes a 60GB hard drive... Some retailers (like Amazon.com) still have 20GB units in stock and they fetch about $260

Good luck getting microsoft to help you with this too. E-mail, phone and google all aren't getting me any real answers. I've given out my console Id and serial number, address, phone number, everything. The phone "support" is laughable at best. Funny how my cell dropped a call from there number -5- straight times too in a two day period. I have a late 2007 arcade model with the 256MB card too. And I just got the offer for the 20GB HDD for $20 only.

My guess there either backordered or they just don't give a shit and taking there time. I just assume both really at this point. The $21.39 charge hasn't cleared yet too on my card if that helps too.

He isn't going to do it if he has to get Netflix and I don't want the guy to miss out on having live because I barely get to hang out with him as it is and if he doesn't have live it would suck even more.

You need a Netflix subscription if you want access to streaming movies, nothing more.

The asterisk at the bottom of the page: http://www.xboxstorageupgrade.com

dmaul1114
10-21-2008, 07:23 PM
Yep, of course you need a netflix subscription. They aren't going to give away access to non-members. It's just another method, besides the PC or the box they sell, to watch the streaming movie library.

It's $8.99 a month for 1 dvd out at a time, unlimited per month and unlimited instant watch access. A damn good deal and I'd never give up my netflix account. The deals for 2 or 3 out at a time are good as well if you have time to watch more movies. I used too, but down graded when I got busier.

Got mine today. Has a little "refurbished in Mexico" sticker on the bottom, it made me chuckle. Other than that, you can't tell it's been refurbed, at least cosmetically.

I wasn't real happy with the packaging, it was just wrapped in one small piece of bubble wrap and stuffed in a box with a crumbled up piece of paper on top. I haven't hooked it up yet, but I hope the packaging was sufficient.

Let me see if my math is correct here.

200GB= 200,000 MB.

200,000/700MB per movie=285.xxx SD movies you could watch.

Bandwith caps suck, but for most people they're really not an issue. I'll watch at most 4 or 5 instant watch movies a month, and I seldom download anything as I mainly just use the Net for surfing and e-mail and x-box live. I do download the occasinal game demo, video or DLC, but only once or twice a month.

That's said, I have Comcast, but we don't have an official cap policy in place yet in my area.

Why is that? Nelson said on his podcast that NXE is done and this isn't a beta. It's just a preview.

That's true. Actually I think his wording was "this cake is already baked, it likely won't be a different version at launch".

The question then stands: why wait? I guess they are just really trying hard to find the show stopping bug.

He also mentioned that the people that get it early will get a special 800 number they can call to a special team to directly ask questions or report issues to.

I don't trust Microsoft enough to let them run a major beta test on my 360. I'd think long and hard before installing it any earlier than I have to. I don't care if they say it is done, because there track record with "done" products (360 console itself, mics, wireless mics, Vista, etc..) is horrible. I'll probably wait a few days after it is actually released to install it on my console.

Then you best disconnect your ethernet cable from the back of your 360.

I disagree with you, however. They do have a bad record with hardware. But with software they have a much better record than Sony. And even if there was something overlooked and something bad happened, I am confident they would fix or replace it.

Netflix won't even attempt at offering HD streaming until the average broadband user has a connection 3-6x faster.

I'm the first to say fuck MS on the software side of things, until the 360 came out. I have to admit that yes compared to Sony the have done a wonderful job with software side of the 360 no problems no bricks (that i am aware of) over all flawless so far

My buddies PS3 became one of the bricked units when Sony FW 2.42 came out and could have been avoid had Sony tested the firmware to it's limits. But to be fair they did pull it and were quick to fix the problem.

It still means loads and loads of buffering time. It won't be HD. And because 95% of internet connections suck, even hi speed ones, it won't look nearly as good as say a Blu-Ray movie or even a Marketplace download all the way through.

Let's see...take an HD video stream..."zip" it, aka make the file smaller, and then let the 360 unzip it on the fly. Entirely possible considering the specs on the 360. It may not be 20+ MB/s HD but i could easily see possibly 10 MB/s if they use the above method.

Watching the video, it seems they have the movies broken into chapters like any normal DVD. I would assume they load the chapters first and that allows you to fast forward to a different chapter and rewind. Obviously if you fast forward it'll take about 5 seconds to buffer (based on the Joystiq video), but from selecting a movie to the movie actually starting it took about 25 seconds. Not bad at all if you ask me, plenty of time to grab another drink or food or something.

Yeah, the game installs are really important to me, as well. My first console was one of the "newer" pre-Falcom consoles, and the disc drive was damn near silent. After that died, they sent me one that was manufactured a few months earlier, and it had an older drive. Holy shit. This thing is horrible. Netflix HD is coming...
According to our friends over at Engadget (http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/10/29/hd-netflix-streaming-comes-to-xbox-360-first/), Microsoft and Netflix will soon announce that Xbox Live gold members will have access to high definition Netflix movie streaming to their 360s come November 19th. HD movie streaming that isn't available with Netflix's current "Watch Instantly" portal, Roku hardware or Samsung and LG's Netflix enabled Blu-ray players. The HD Netflix roll out will be slow at first with approximately 300 movies being available in HD on day one of the NXE's launch.http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/10/29/hd-netflix-set-to-debut-on-the-xbox-360/

On the last 1Up Show, they said that playing a game that is installed to the hard drive sounds like the 360 running the dashboard.

I hope I get into the "preview" just to try it out.

bigdaddybruce44
10-29-2008, 02:30 PM
Yeah, this is exactly what I heard, as well. The disc needs to be in the system, in order to verify that you actually own it, but while playing, the game info is always read from the hard drive.

thrustbucket
10-29-2008, 02:34 PM
Lots of misinfo here.....

First of all, I was wrong, and pleasantly surprised about the HD announcement. Nice.

Any resolution 1280 x 720 or higher is considered "HD".

And for those of you saying it has to be ultra compressed so will not compare to a blu-ray, don't jump to that conclusion just yet.

I was super caught up in the whole hd dvd / blu-ray / digital distribution war. I studied clip after clip and comparison after comparison until I was numb. With the latest versions of the VC1 codec that I am sure is being used for this, you can get very very good quality as low as 3-6 MB/s.

Side by side with a blu-ray disc, most people won't notice a difference with ultra compressed HD in most scenes. The only time you would is in complicated scenes or pausing and/or zooming.

If you want proof then go download some HD stuff from xbox video marketplace. This netflix stuff is likely using similar bandwith.

SynGamer
10-29-2008, 02:47 PM
Taking PlayOn as an example, the program streams the video and encodes it into a format the 360 can read. I'm almost certain Netflix will be going the same route (at least for 360 users) because they could compress the HD video and then use 1 or 2 of the 360's Cores to uncompress the file. So long as you have a descent connection...

Let's assume they stream the HD movies in 720P...that should take up no more than 10GB if they use about 8MB/s bitrate. Assuming you watch a couple movies a week, you will probably get close. Thank god i don't have that cap (Time Warner Cable).
