General synopsis:

Gearbox's third entry in the venerable Brothers In Arms series heads up to the front as with the first of the series for next-generation systems. Delivering on the franchise’s compelling story, unrivaled authenticity and intense squad-based action, Brothers In Arms Hell’s Highway drops you into Operation Market-Garden, the largest airborne operation of World War II. Lead Matt Baker, Joe Hartsock and the rest of the 101st Airborne Division as they fight to open "Hell's Highway" in a daring bid for a quick end to the war. The game , makes use of the new Unreal Engine 3 technology for its delivery of the war experience, with new cutting-edge gameplay features and a completely redesigned online component.

June 16, 2008 (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/882/882239p1.html):

Emotional impact on the player is a key element of Hell's Highway, as Gearbox's President Randy Pitchford has gone to lengths to point out. Instead of putting you in the shoes of some faceless, floating head packing a luger, you take on the roll of Staff Sergeant Matt Baker – a fleshed out and believable character who routinely interacts with his squad and has to deal with the emotional and psychological impact of life and death on the battlefield. To that end, the player too is positioned to actually give a damn about the result of bad tactical decisions – though, we'll need to sit down with the final game to really see if Hell's Highway plies out the tears.

The gameplay makes squad management as seamless as possible, in a Ghost Recon kind of way. You're broken down into separate squads - initially the Fire team, the Assault team or the Bazooka team. Each has its own function, which is fairly self-evident.

While moments of action are generally played from the first-person perspective, the breakaway cover system pulls out to display your surroundings from above, in a third-person perspective. This gives you the best possible view of your squad and the immediate surroundings, while also giving you a chance to catch your breath, line up a grenade, redirect your squad or prepare to vault over your cover with a tap of the A button (on 360).

Let's talk about grenades for a second. These have, in past games, been far too readily available. In Hell's Highway, these have seemingly become much harder to find; you're forced to use them sparingly, therefore upping their value. On the flipside, like in the real world, the splash damage seems a little higher than your average shooter. A well-placed grenade can really stem the tide of Nazi oppressors.

A checkpoint system guides you from one point on the field to the next; when issuing orders to advance, flank or take cover, hand animations and waving signal the appropriate manoeuvre to your teammates. It's a subtle way of keeping HUD clutter to a minimum, too – though, there are still some pop-up notifications, such as a casualty warning when someone takes one too many rounds of hot lead. Other features also seem a little tried-and-tested at times – particularly the red-ring that eventually lines the screen when you take damage, and the AI, while possibly not fully implemented, still seemed a little daft at times. Still, the immersive setting and impressive animation routines made up for initial shortcomings in the demo we saw. Hopefully, the next few months will provide enough time to smooth over any AI wrinkles.

Will World War II shooters ever go out of fashion? Not as long as people are happy to keep putting down the dollars, it seems. Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is at least taking steps to break out of the Medal of Honour / Call of Duty framework by putting a stronger emphasis on story and characterisation than even Call of Duty 4 managed. Our fingers are firmly crossed that Gearbox polish the game on every platform and address our meagre concerns. Other than that though, we're feeling pretty good about this one. Roll on, August.

July 16, 2008 (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/891/891078p1.html):

At this point, we've written no less than 10 previews and features about Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, so there's not much more new to the game that we could talk about. The game was playable at Ubisoft's booth in PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 forms, and I played around with controlling an assault team and a bazooka team to outmaneuver and flank German infantry. There was also a chance to peruse the upcoming mass market paperback novel based on the game that is written by John Antal, the retired US Army colonel and author who is also a member of Gearbox's development team. Plus there's a comic book coming soon, as well.

I've always liked Brothers in Arms's tactical gameplay, which is a departure from the run-and-gun style of almost every shooter on the market. You have to think each encounter through, thinking on your feet as you maneuver fire teams into position, having them provide cover for one another, and engaging the enemy yourself with rifle fire and grenades. It's as close as gaming gets to real-world fire team tactics.

The controls take a bit of getting used to, especially if you've played other shooters (say, Halo or COD4). You either have to get used to the BIA controls (I had to restart several times after inadvertently throwing a grenade into the middle of my squad) or reconfigure them on the options screen. After a battle or two, though, you'll be commanding squads with confidence. Of course, it also helps to have a real-life Army colonel behind your back and encouraging you. I'm looking forward to the updated graphics of Hell's Highway, and it'll ship in the next month or two.

Now, I'm not particularly interested in Hell's Highway, but there is so little information about the game, I figured I'd just gather it all up.

I referred to Wikipedia and it supposedly has multiplayer.

For a title released next month, there is a serious drought of information about this title. I think that is a bad omen.

Listened to the July 17, 2008 1UP Yours podcast and, the oft-critical, Garnett Lee enjoyed his hands-on experience with Hell's Highway, said it was still story-focused and he anticipates its September release. Someone at Gearbox joined in and said the advertising campaign would be kicked up and more information will be released next month.

I suppose I can raise my concern level to "uninterested" to "mildly interested." :-k

i played hell's highway at penny arcade expo. i really liked the first two games (more the 1st then the 2nd), and hh very much played like them. i'll definitely be picking this up, but seeing as how ubisoft games drop in price fairly quickly, i'll probably wait just a little bit.

I'm planing on picking it up on tuesday at gamestop. Is there any cool preorder merchandise there or anywhere else?

p.s. for anyone on the border:

OXM gave it a 9.0
+Intense squad combat that spins a good story
+Fantastic graphics and realism
-Weird A.I. glitches; too-sticky cover system.
?Who among you thinks checkpoints saves are a good idea? [Crickets...]

Did you make this game or something?

"Unfortunately, your teams are sometimes stupid when it comes to responding to commands maneuvering them to safety, which is one of the core gameplay mechanics."

Every review has mentioned that.

"Even stranger are the moments where you start to push forward by yourself on the battlefield, calling your soldiers to form up behind you, only to see a team that you know is at least thirty or forty yards behind you get warped up ahead of your position"

"However, there are times where the AI will simply stand in the open and disregard incoming gunfire or explosions, not moving a muscle until you get within an unspecified proximity that seems to trigger them coming to life."

"Visually, the title is truly a hit or miss affair, which is unfortunate considering how solid the storytelling elements are."

"That is particularly true within the multiplayer game, which just feels tagged on."

Sure its getting 7'd and 8's but this game could have been great

The multiplayer was limited in the first two but it was great. Defusing the bomb with less than ten seconds left always gave me that warm fuzzy feeling. On the other hand, popping some dude as he was just about to escape with the document was another great thing.

EDIT -- Uh oh. Looks like they changed up multiplayer.

Hearing from IGN review of 7.6/10

8.5 Presentation
The tale of Sgt. Baker and his squad is as good as many war movies, and is a great story for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. This is a compelling story.
5.5 Graphics
Some visuals, like the particle effects and the slow motion kill shots look great. Unfortunately, much of the rest of the title looks shoddy.
8.0 Sound
The orchestral score swells at just the right moments to add gravity to the situation, and the dialogue is delivered well, although some comments are poorly timed in the heat of battle.
7.5 Gameplay
Commanding your troops are extremely easy to do, and for the most part, they do their job well. However, it's the moments when the AI on both sides break down that stand out like a sore thumb.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
With three difficulty levels, there's enough challenge for newcomers and vets, but the multiplayer won't keep your attention for long.

7.6 Good OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Its looks like its going to be a rental for me. Was thinking about picking it up but now im second guessing

I don't think I played Earned in Blood 100 days consecutively and I was really into the multiplayer.

Oh, and most of the achievements are ridiculous. I've gotten nearly 80% completion on Burnout Revenge and played online and I've only gotten 230 or so points. I played through Prey once and played online once without getting many kills and I picked up over 600 points. I started enjoying my 360 more when I stopped playing for achievements.

Yep. I don't play for achievements. I play for fun. However, I do play online multiplayer in select first-person shooters with a competitive spirit. I like performing well in Call of Duty 4, for instance. I guess it's a leftover trait from my sports days.

rented this and I've got to say that its more Road To Hill 30 compared to Earned In Blood. If you dug the other games, you'll love this one. Though I have to agree with IGN on the graphics department (they are ugly but they're serviceable), the cinematics the come up during game play are pretty sweet though. The audio is quite improved compared to the other two games so if you have a nice setup, make sure you crank the volume as its totally worth getting lost in the audio.

Would this be Eastern Standard Time? That would make it 11 p.m. PST, and at an Orange Box level activity. On a weekend, I played Bad Company past 2 a.m., and it was very active. So yeah, if Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 represent highly-active online multiplayer games, and Bad Company represents the level below COD4, then Hell's Highway sounds pretty inactive. That's unfortunate, if so. After hearing impressions and reading reviews, I'll give the game a rent. It seems unworthy of a retail purchase.

And if you've played the other two games, the story really gets good and it oddly enough has a nice emotional punch to the gut that goes into the extent of the secret that Baker is holding on to

maybe it's the fact that i really really enjoyed "road to hill 30" and, to a lesser extent, "earned in blood", but i didn't like "hell's highway" at all. i finished it, but didn't really have fun with it or enjoy the story. i probably was just expecting too much from it. glad to hear others are liking it, though.
