I'm using MediaMonkey, which has the ability to transfer files over to my music player in a different format/bitrate than the source file on my PC. I don't pretend to know much about the +/- of different formats the outside of FLAC files being frickin huge and OGG being a funny word.

I'd like to compress the files that go on my music player so I can fit more on there, but I don't want to compress to the extent that the loss in quality is audible when knocking around town, running, biking, so on. Any tips are appreciated...

Flac has the best quality because it's lossless, but if they are too big, mp3 is probably the way to go. Most people can't really tell the difference in bitrate, as long as you don't go really low you should be fine. I would say no lower than 128. I do mine at 192, and I honestly can't tell the difference between the mp3's and the original cds
