You're laptop should support it, but I'm not sure you'll get any improvement, at least not in speed. You're laptop supports 4200 ram which runs at a slower speed, and while it may use the faster ram, it will only be able to run it at the 4200 speed. If you're upgrading from 512 megs to 1 gig, you'll notice a difference. I'd recommend sticking with a 4200 ram. Also, look inside of the manual for your laptop for limitations on the amount of ram. Doesn't do any good if you buy a 2 gig stick and find out it only accepts 1 gig sticks.

I had that laptop and I had 2 pieces of 1GB DDR2 PC2-5300 in there also (for 2GB total). It works fine, but they will run at the slower PC2-4200 speed. You also will want to tell us how much memory you have in your laptop currently. Dell uses 2 pieces of memory in their laptop; so lets say you have 512MB in there right now, it's very likely you have 2 pieces of 256MB. That means replacing one piece of 256MB with the 1GB will give you 1.25GB of memory.
