View Full Version : Looking for a short term job

I'm in kind of a crappy position at the moment. I currently have a full time job at GameStop (trust me, I'm not proud of it). I got a job offer in Japan, but there's still four months left before I leave...however, I don't think I can afford to be unemployed until then. I still have monthly bills to pay, and I should be saving up since I'm moving to Japan. Any short term job suggestions? (preferably not retail or fast food related). I would love to have a laid back job before I leave. I cannot stand my current job at GameStop anymore...it's almost been 4 years, and I've had it up to -HERE- with the company. Do I even need to explain why? It doesn't help that my manager is a complete douchebag and I hate working with him.

If it helps, I have managerial experience and a BA from a 4 year University.

are you big and burly? If so why not work as a bouncer at a club? Or maybe work as security. Or if you're the meek type, try working at a library or a book store.

You could be regional manager for Staples. You must outsell Michael Scott.

Just stick with Gamestop for four more months. And just be really lazy for the next three months. Then, in the last month, don't do anything, and be a complete dick to your boss. What's he going to do? Fire you? You'll be gone soon anyway.

Ya, you've gotta be joking. No place will hire you full-time for like 3 months. Just stick it out.

You will have to look for something part time and hope they give you a good amount of hours. You could also try temp jobs, but you probably won't get the hours you are looking for. Construction or Lawn Servicing is one the best paying things you can look at for the short term.

Try Manpower or some other temp service. You'll look back on your time at Gamestop fondly.

Well, a couple of options:

1) Ok, you've had it up to here with your job. We've all been there (trust me, everyone has had it at one point or another). Yet, it's only 4 months. You haven't quit yet, so you obviously can stand it. You got a better job coming, why not ride it out? Just focus on the good of your job, and try to ignore the bad. As others say, as bad as it is, you'll likely look back in a year or 2 and actually miss the place.

2) Try temp agencies. They are created for short term jobs.

3) Retail or fast food (sorry, those are the easy to get jobs)

Really, think it through. Everyone wants a nice easy job that pays great. So, the ones that exist (with cool bosses etc), people don't leave. So, I'd just ride it out and hope for the best.

If you go the temp route make sure they land you a gig before you quit GS. Also, stay the fuck away from Labor Ready. They are the absolute worst and usually pay only just above minimum wage.

Also if you go to PT or Temp work you'll likely lose your benefits.

Uh, yeah, there is. I worked at a call center last year that hired groups for people for the summer & christmas seasons. Each time, the position lasted 3 months due to needing more help during those months.

Go to a temp agency for law firms. Ask around if you don't know of any. Maybe email a law prof from your old school asking if he knows of any temp agencies that can get you work in a law firm. Easy work, full time, $15+/hr. Start and stop whenever you want.

Most temp agencies will administer aptitude tests, you'll need to have strong English skills and be able to type pretty quickly (I think 60 WPM is the minimum).

Edit: I just noticed you're in Seattle. Check out Woods & Associates (http://www.woodsandassociates.com/).

Nope. Average build, I'd say.

I'd love to, however, my manager would probably fire me if my productivity were to drop.

Oh, I'm not looking for full time. Part time would suffice.

Anyhow, thanks for the suggestions guys.

One call from the boss could seriously eff his job opportunity in Japan.

I got a job offer in Japan,

Dude, watch out for the Cloverfield monster during your going-away party.
