I'm not sure if most of you heard about this or not, but EA is going to implement 6 on 6 online leagues in this years NHL 09 game.

The secret online feature for NHL 09 has now been officially revealed as being the EA Sports Hockey League. This will be somewhat of a combination between Be A Pro mode and Online Team Play.
Along the lines of an MMO, you’ll be able to create your player and improve him through the EASHL. Teams will comprise of up to 50 users, individual and team stats will be tracked, and this will be a ranked online mode. Only two team members will be required to compete together in order to count a game, but up to the six that is allowed through OTP will be able to join in at once. Basically there could be several games for a single team taking place at once, and it allows for a lot of flexibility in being able to get into games and contribute for the team as well as build up your player.

I'm kind of disappointed that Madden is getting covered so heavy yet we still have only 2 trailers of NHL and no real gameplay videos. I buy Madden every year but Madden 09 is a very glorified version of 08. NHL 09 is going to have some huge improvements on an already great game.

I like how they talk about real dump and chase gameplay. That is a really huge part of the real NHL and I felt like no one ever uses that type of strategy ever.

I really hope they revamp the fighting system, last years wasn't that great to me. Everything else was fun though.

Yeah we can have up to 50 players. So we will be able to have more than one game going at a time if we need to. The downside is that means we may have games with a lot of team members who have little to no experience on the team and I'm not sure if that will hurt our overall ranking or not.

I'm not sure if this will be a serious or casual team. I guess it really just depends on what everyone else wants it to be.

One thing I think we should do is limit the number of people per position. If we keep the position numbers balanced, then we should have an easier time of planning games.

Operation Sports has a Q&A thing every Friday where the EA guys answer a few forum questions in a thread. I asked about the logo options when creating a team. Hopefully they'll choose my question on Friday.

I updated the positions thread and also fixed AK85's XBL GT. So now we just need to find two more left defenseman and one goalie. If those spots fill up, I'll add another slot to each position.

The jerseys cost $69 CAD a piece which comes out to $64.62.

GXXL - Cut designed for goalies
XXL - players over 6′ 2″
XL - most players between 5′ 10″ and 6′ 2″
L - players up to 5′ 10″
M - players up to 5′ 4″
S - players up to 5′

here's how it works from what I have read...

you only need 3 people to start a game, obviously the full feel of the game is best felt fielding a full team.

but I think you can easily get that experience with 5 skaters and a computer goalie... I think a live goalie is an added bonus, that's all...

but you are running things, don't let me toe-step brother :)

It looks like nobody really wants to be a goalie. I played some goalie on 08, with the camera behind him tight (I'm assuming it will be like that this year). I was awful for about 4 or 5 games but then I got better. But that was against the CPU, not a team of human players. I think the most fun games this year will be the 5-on-5 games with CPU controlled goalies. But good luck and thanks to anyone who can play goalie and play it well, it is one huge bitch.

Basically having more than one goalie would be helpful if you wanted to play and your main goalie wasnt online.

RawisJericho, I was just thinking. How exactly is the team going to work? Since we're on our 6th round of positions, and you can only have a maximum of 5 players active in a game (since we're short on goalies), we almost have enough people to man 6 teams. I know it says you can have multiple games going on at once, but I guess I'm just confused as to how that will work, and how everyone will get a chance to play.

Are we all just under one big umbrella of "CAG" and then whenever we get together with 3 or more guys to play an online game, it just goes toward the general CAG record? Are we looking to compete in a league? And will we actually be able to take 5 of our live human players and be randomly matched up with some poor sap playing by himself? (that just seems unfair, haha).

Sorry for all the questions. Maybe I need to read up on the game better. I'm just trying to understand why EA gives you the option of having a 50 member team. It seems a bit excessive.

Are we sure it's ANY 6 can play at any time? Because I thought somebody mentioned you create your character and choose your position when you start the game. So, wouldn't that lock us into our position when we go to play on the team online? I guess I'm thinking along the lines of MLB's "Road to the Show", where you control the fate of that single player, and when he's not playing, neither are you. So, wouldn't we have to gather a person from each position to get the full 5 man team?

I mean, otherwise, it would be a team with our created likenesses that anyone on the team could come in and control. That would make it like old school NHL where you just had a colored star, and could switch between players...but that wouldn't make any sense in this context. Ah, Christ...this is confusing, haha.

You can do custom jersey's as far as I can tell. They just picked an NHL teams logo. I dont know if you will be able to actualy "make" a jersey though.

One thing I did notice is that when they were creating their player they were able to pick not only a skater style(sniper, playmaker....) but also a goalie type(butterfly, standup etc...). Then I noticed that when they were signing into a game with teammates they were able to select whatever position they wanted, or so it seemed. So maybe when you create your person you can dress them as a goalie and skater. Then you can level which ever one you feel like.

Anyway, I will try to get a cleaner design. In the end, I believe the custom jersey in the game will offer stickers and other pre-made stuff. No real freedom to create your own logos because of copyright issues. It's also a good thing because we won't see some genitals on some jerseys... but, we won't see unique designs. Oh well... I had some fun doing the jersey.

It's nice seeing the mock-ups of CAG jerseys, but with the only likely option we'll have being able to choose the main, secondary, and trim colors, we should probably get ideas on those, if we haven't decided already. Thats why you mix and match and play as much as possible. If you find a good group then keep playing with them...

He used to play for the Red Wings but is retired. He is one of the all-time greatest players in hockey.

Lubey: For the EASHL, if you have six people from your team online, but none are goalies, can one of them play goalie and still have reasonable ratings?

Andy Agostini: All EA Sports Hockey League players will be able to play goalie and they will all start out with a basic template for being a goalie based on what goalie type they chose. As the user earns hockey cards online they will receive attribute points both as a player and a goalie. Now as we have found out playing games here at our studio. Anybody can play goalie but not everybody is great at it. So everybody will be able to play goalie and have reasonable ratings it’s the skill in which that player plays goalie that will affect things for his team.

I'm hoping we don't have to use the "Be a pro" camera when we play in that mode.
I prefer the excellent default camera.

The only problem I have with the Be a Pro camera is how difficult it is to see teammates when looking to pass the puck, your peripheral vision is really limited with the default camera. Also I noticed when you take control of the puck sometimes the camera will rotate right behind your player, which in my experiences can be disorienting.

There is a high camera and a low camera for be a pro. I believe you can change it in game or before you enter the game

No speed burst and the face buttons/bumpers also does different things. Pause the game and look at your controller settings for the full list.

I'll be picking this up next thursday when i get paid, the demo was amazing, and although the camera is a bit iffy in Be a Pro, it'll be easy to adjust to.

I downloaded the demo a couple nights ago and just played a couple quick games. I wasn't too impressed because the controls were different from the old PS2 game and I wasn't use to the no speed burst. I was thinking about not getting this game.

But tonight I did the Pro thing and that is awesome. I love the blue arrow that shows you the area you should be in. I feel like it is a team sport now instead of me controlling everyone.
