Reuters - Nearly half of video game players
watched less television last year or plan to cut their viewing
time this year, according to a report issued on Thursday that
lends credence to industry fears that young men are switching
off the tube.

This is probably fairly accurate, I don't know any of my friends, who are all in their 20s-30s who still watch TV at all anymore other than sports. TV went to crap imho many years ago with the dying out of X-Files, etc. From the perspective of somebody who doesn't watch TV current programming seems to mostly be
1) Survivor and its million spinoffs/ripoffs
2) sitcoms (which lost their freshness post-Seinfeld)
3) CSI and its million spinoffs/ripoffs
The only TV I watch anymore other than sports is ATHF, Family Guy, etc... and G4, and other than G4 everything worth watching I wait for DVD season releases.

The only 'fresh' shows I see nowadays are cartoons (especially Adult Swim), but then again more and more are based on card games or collect 'em all Pokemon mentality.
I hate reality shows with a passion.

Did this report come from the trade journal Duh?
Of course you're going to watch less TV if you play videogames more. You're not going to continue to watch TV for the same amount of time and play videogames on top of it. Most people have a certain amount of time each day that they can either watch TV or play videogames, and most people don't differentiate between them and set aside time for each one, unless theres a specific show they *must* watch.

You can count me as falling in this category. I watch very little TV anymore and use my free time for gaming instead.
Yeah, I'm definitely in that category. It's a nice retort to any asshat who gives you flak for playing games so much. "Yeah? And and how much TV do you watch?"

I love the panic the lower ratings on tv is causing the networks. They keep putting the same old crap out there and wonder why people would rather be online or play video games.

I play games because they are more interactive, I can play on my own schedule. I also use the internet more because I can look up what I want when I want. I may get a TIVO eventually but I just can't sit there and flip through channels trying to find something anymore. I only have so much time.

As has been previously posted above, that's what happens when you pile on the shit on the telly, people stop watching. There are only a handful of shows I watch regularly nowadays, and it's not because I'm playing video games.

I used to watch cartoon network like every day when they'd have new Yu Yu Hakusho or some other new eps of a show I liked on. But then they made people wait like a year before any new eps of YYH appeared and even then they didn't come on daily but rather every Saturday so I said "fuck it' and scrounged around IRC for the eps.

If TV weren't so shitty, I probably wouldn't spend as much time on the internet or playing as many video games. Or reading.
What little TV I do watch is mostly cable channels and I'm usually doing something else while watching TV on top of it...like eating, cooking, laundry, dishes, working out etc, because there are only so many hours in the day and I have to multitask to fit in video game and internet time. And 2 years ago I cancelled the big TV stations like NBC, ABC, CBS on my cable subscription and have just been watching my cable channels. I'm forced to watch those channels when I visit my parents, and when I see the horrible stuff on lately (reality TV, Survivor, Ho Who Wants To Marry a Millionaire) I can honestly say I don't regret my decision one bit. Is it any wonder we are playing so many video games? At least they won't warp our minds as badly as the boring, lame ass crap that is being shown on TV lately.

There is also the growing mountain of material on DVD including shows that might have drawn larger audiences in syndication before the box sets gave us full scheduling freedom.
TV seasons on DVD did over a $Billion worth of business in 2003. After the crap networks put me through with shows like Firefly I'm reluctant to get involved in a new series only to have it yanked from the schedule because they put it on in a time slot that guaranteed crappy ratings.
I think we're going to see more episodic series skipping the networks and targeting the direct to video and cable markets. They might get picked for syndication by the big networks but won't be subject to their whims for survival.

I download the shows i want to watch. I only turn on the television to watch dvd's/play games. The only spontaneous time i watch tv is when at a friends/buisness/ect. The next time i 'plan' on watching television is probably for a football game.

My Weekly view habbits:
1. Fox News (at least 3 hours a day)
2. Smallville
3. Enterprise
4. Gilmore Girls (no comments please)
5. American Chopper
6. Monster House
7. Monster Garage
8. American Hot Rod
and the occassional G4/TechTV, History Channel, Aniimal Planet, TLC or Discovery channel show that catches my interest while I channel-surf, but usually in the background while I play XBOX.

Well no duh, I've been doing this for years. There's nothing good on TV anymore that isn't sports, reruns of the Simpons, or 24 (GODDAMN JANUARY).
Plus, playing video games is an active form of entertainment while watching TV is a passive form of entertainment.
