This should be fun...
With as many people trying out as they have, it would not be feasible for the three judges to see everyone. Only the really good/bad ones get through to Randy, Paula, and Simon.

A serious answer to your question is that you stand in a group of 10 people and sing to a producer. If you're good enough or crazy enough in about the 10 seconds they listen to you, then you move on to more producers, and finally them.

This is exactly what I have heard from various sources.

I tried out. First you wait in line for HOURS. Then you finally get to sing in front of 2 producers in groups of 4; after that, there is at least one more level before Paula and Randy, and depending on how many make it through those first two levels, there might be a third level before the you're "on camera".
Piece of advice: you either need to be very attractive or very interesting (for better or worse). Good singers alone don't make it past the first level. I saw HUNDREDS of great singers get passed over because they just weren't noteworthy.

This makes me wonder how Chris Sligh got so far into the competition. :-k
