View Full Version : Looking to buy a Home Theater

When I went to go see The Dark Knight in theaters, I forgot how much I loved IMAX. Sure tickets were expensive, the line was a bitch to wait in, but as soon as the film started rolling I told myself "I need surround sound."

Up until this year I was using a 1985 JVC speaker set as my "surround sound." It wasn't true surround sound, it was just a nice stereo system. However the thing would heat up a room faster than Megan Fox in Transformers and was just flat out bulky (see below).

I am looking for something that would go well with Blu-Ray movies, but also has to be on the cheap side. I was looking at a few at Wal-Mart, because with my discount card I can get a nice price.

My eyes were gazing upon this one -> Philips HTS3565D/37 (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9856636)

It's a 5.1 system with a subwoofer. I don't want/need a 7.1 setup just yet, thats a future purchase.

The two features I need a surround sound system to have is both an iPod docking station and HDMI. This one has both.

I am not an expert when it comes to home theaters, so I was hoping some of you could help me out. I know with Blu-Ray there are a variety of different sound outputs. There's Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby TrueHD, DTS and PCM 5.1

This one offers both Pro Logic II and Digital. I was actually hoping to find one with Dolby TrueHD as that seems to be a new favorite. However I came out empty handed finding one.

Essentially my question is, what differences are there between Dolby Digital 5.1 and the others (skipping out Pro Logic)?

Any help would be much appreciated.
