View Full Version : Word of Caution about Gamestop Employees

So today I went to a local GS to pick up a copy of Final Fantasy IV used with a few other little things. So I go about my normal day and use my edge card with no issue since I have a few hundred dollars on it.

Well the employee gives me back my receipt and says you have $83.14 left. Now that struck me as odd because I have $314.16 on it 7 days earlier when I went to pre-order Madden 09. I ask him about it and he says all I see is $83.14 and there is nothing he can do about it. Frustrated as hell I go to my car and get my receipt that I purchased Madden on in full. I go back in and the manager tells me there is nothing he can do.

Even more upset I call my "good" GS and speak to someone who tells me to come on in and he can take a look at it for me. I get there (short drive luckily) and the employee looks it over and says you sure you bought nothing between now and then. I didn't and he calls the hot-line and finds out that there were 4 other transactions on my Edge card that day I paid off my Madden pre-order. He then asks me about one of the employees. I tell him he was shaddy and made a comment about the amount of credit I had on my card when I paid off the pre-order. I really didn't get a good vibe from the guy when I left the store.

So after further digging that the Manager did (which I will be going to his store only since the people are trustful and helpful) we found out that this GS employee re-printed my receipt to get the Edge Card number then used it to buy Soulcalibur IV, NCAA 09, and other things. He also told the person that rang him up that my girlfriend Lashawnda told him to just go ahead and use it. I don't have a girlfriend named Lashawnda needless to say.

Now I am going through the process of getting my $114 dollars back which might take a few days. Not sure what happend to the employee yet in regards to his job and if he will get arrested and charged with theft.

But I would like to use this as a word of caution. If there is a employee that looks shaddy, don't go to them. If they make a comment about your balance keep an eye on your balance. Keep your receipts. The manager said that he has heard about it before so it might be common place.

Good thing I keep tabs on all of my cards. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. Pain in the ass, but I hope that employee gets what he deserves and you get something out of it from Gamestop. Seriously.

Seriously, you'd think he'd come up with a better name than Lashawnda if he's going to make up a story like that. I've never heard of ANYBODY that went by that name :P

I've been aware of this possibility, so when I start using a gift card, I plan ahead such that I end up killing the entire balance of the card in nearly one shot. So if I have a $100 card for instance, I wouldnt use it to buy a $10 game, I'd wait till the next time I used 80 or 90.

"He also told the person that rang him up that my girlfriend Lashawnda told him to just go ahead and use it. I don't have a girlfriend named Lashawnda"

Lol, hilarious. But seriously, I hope that prick gets fired and arrested for pulling that shit. I think GS should give you some sort of extra reimbursement for that kind of shady activity.

"(other stuff)... shady ...(more stuff)

THANK YOU. That was bugging me the whole time I read the OP.

Glad it worked out for you OP and thanks for the warning. I guess it could happen anywhere that takes giftcards too.

Thats the thing. I think the guy wanted to use an obscure name to make it sound more realistic maybe? I'm not sure but it was funny because the Manger that helped me out asked me "your wifes name isn't Lashawnda...right?" I just laughed.

i really don't know how the hell he wouldn't have thought that this wouldn't get caught. The worst part was he seemed like a cool guy, until he saw my balance then he asked about for a few minutes. Then I got the vibe. fucking bastard

I live near Detroit. Believe me, it's not that far-fetched.

314-83 = $231
-$60 for Madden = $171

Why $114?

Scorch: The person who stole joshnorm's Edge Card number used his credit to buy a few games.

While I was working at Gamestop a couple of years ago, a coworker of mine had a way of stealing old game reservations that were never picked up and using them to make false reservations, thus boosting his sales numbers. While not necessarily as evil as the employee in the OPs case, it's still a stupid thing to do nonetheless. Furthermore, I was especially awestruck to learn after I had quit, that my manager had taught him how to do it, and did the same thing himself. Needless to say, both of them ended up getting fired.

Being a Store Manager of a GS myself, I will tell you that he will get fired, and that he will get charged with theft. GS will reimburse you entirely and that douche will get the bill for it, I have seen it first hand.

Sorry that happened to you man, I know GS has some shitty policies and procedures (gutting the games come to mind), but one thing they take care of extremely well is theft, internally and externally.

sadly this isn't a gamestop exclusive type of deal. anywhere that sells gift cards has this possibility, especially during really busy holiday times. keep an eye on the giftcard that they actually scan, because while i was at a store, 1 of the seasonal people stole well over $1,000 worth of gift cards.she scanned one and switched it with another that looked the same at the register. we didn't find out until after she left since that is when people actually came in to use them, so this is a possibility anywhere, not just gamestop, though it would be difficult only to do with a receipt for a giftcard since it usually shows up like a CC with the xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-2506 for example on the receipt.

If he doesn't want to claim her, give her my number. I've never dated a Lashawnda.

I bought a MCI phone card many years ago. It had $100 on it. I made one call on a payphone and it dropped to $80.

Who the hell have heard of a $20 3 minute call?? (No I wasn't calling a porno line...).

I thought that was shady too...I never got my money back and I never dealt with MCI ever again. I think they don't exist anymore.

At least you get closure....

Nah when he's in jail she be doin' his cousin or best friend. Taht name sounds like it belongs to a real ghetto booty bbw type of girl. Kinda how you assume a guy called Dirk is a skinny white dork.

I have heard and read about these stories before. I would never have that much store credit with them for a long time because I don't trust them. It's too easy for them to pull this off and unless you keep your receipts, it's a pain to prove that you didn't use the credit.

That's good to hear, video games are serious business. I don't shop at GS all that much and haven't had an Edge card for years, but I'd be pissed as hell if some prick steals my hard earned points.

yea, i've heard of that happening before. i'd prefer it if the money was kept on a card that only the customer had, and the employees didn't have any access too.

the worst is when it happens to kids who aren't able to fight for their money like adults. i've seen this happen, and it's just wrong.

Dag, that makes me a bit apprehensive about the $700+ on my Edge Card right now, but then again it's been $500+ for over 2 years and I've bought and traded in a bunch of games since I got it and the totals have always come out right for me so maybe the GS employees around here aren't that shady. I have had a couple crack jokes about my balance when they see it though. Either way, I'm putting a big dent in that balance this fall.

You're braver than I am. After hearing the original story (and a couple others along the same lines), I'd be headed out of Gamestop with a MGS4 bundle and a bunch of games right about now.

Problem is I already have an MGS4 bundle and there is absolutely nothing I want before Sept/Oct. I'm using my card mostly online now though with In-Store Pickup so I guess the chances of fraud are much reduced that way. Let's hope so anyway....

You should still report it with the police. Don't rely on gamestop to punish the kid, and filing the police report will ensure that if anything happens with you getting reimbursed you have a record.

Looking for a receipt currently. Did you ever end up calling the number on the back?

Guess I can join the club too. Just got back from GS to learn I'm missing $200 from my card. :hot: I just got off the phone with corporate to find the offending store (which is the one I thought it was). So called up the store and the manager is launching an investigation (has already involved the DM and HR, so I know something is being done). This should be interesting. Just wish GS would stop printing the card number on the receipts... it would solve most of these problems.

Not hiring fucking assholes would help too.

In related matters, has anyone had problems with money vanishing out of a preorder? I can't imagine how but I'll be pretty mad if I go to pick up Fallout 3 and find out that I owe more than a couple bucks on it.

I've read this on a blog at 1up by some chick who actually did this and got fired. It was listed as one of the popular blogs for a time. I think her "lols" indicated that she didn't give afuck that she was stealing. What a bitch.

Funny thing is....the account number on the receipts saved me, after I went to one gamestop and traded in a whole bunch of things, got a $100 or so in creadit on my edge card, then I bought something and they never gave my card back......I dident relize it till I went to a gamestop down the road a hour later.....I called up the store that forgot it and they denied having it....The gamestop I was at helped me and took the account number off my receipt and put it on a new edge card for me

Or leaving that much credit at a store made notorious for customer service at this very site. It is absolutely unacceptable. They're making hand over fist, and they can't even put out the cash to hire someone to establish basic internal controls? That's fucking ridiculous. If this happened to me I would call/write to the corporate level and rip them apart with this very point.

But still, I just can't imagine ever leaving such a sizable amount in the hands of a single store. I'm far from a loyal customer.
