Blackout

I've had my PS2 since 2001. I sent it to Sony for repairs way back when. Anyhow, I haven't really used it much since I bought the PS3. Tonight I go to finish up Yakuza. The game would load up. I get a Disc Read Error message. I know it's not the disc, because for one, the game is mint. No scratches, etc. Second, I played the game at a friend's house earlier and it worked fine. I keep getting the DRE message after wiping down the disc, blowing into the system, etc. The game actually loads up, but then reverts back to the browser and says "please insert a PS2 or PS1 disc." I try out another game, Rogue Galaxy, and it loads up fine.
Now I don't know what the problem is, because months before Yakuza worked fine without any problems. I really don't want to probe through my 100 plus PS2 collection (as well as my PS1 collection) and see if all my games work. I can't use my PS3 to play PS2 because I have the 80GB version. Now what should I do? Is this the pending doom of my PS2? Should I just sell it and get the slim PS2?
