So I Just Spilled Gatorade all over my Laptop!

I accidentally hit the gatorade and it flew all over my laptop. I grabbed a towel and wiped it clean and it seemed to be working fine so I closed it up after I cleaned it and left it for about 30 minutes. Really stupid idea. I came back and attempted to turn it on and it went onto the password page so I entered my password and then nothing. It is on but the screen doesn't show anything. I took out the battery and unplugged it but I think I am pretty screwed.

Usually...but it sounds like instead of turning it off, he just sent it into sleep mode and tried it again after half an hour. If there was any liquid left in the laptop at that point (and it wouldn't surprise me if there was, unless he completely disassembled the thing during that time), I'm guessing that the computer is fried.

If it were water, you'd have been OK to let it dry out no matter what got wet. But sugars eat away at electronics. I would disassemble the unit and inspect each component for damage.

Yeah it will probably work after it dries but your keys will always feel "spodgey" and sticky.

My brother spilled soda on his laptop before. Luckily it was only the keyboard that got damaged. Kudos to you if you only damaged the keyboard, which, depending on your laptop, can be replaced easily if you find a good DIY tutorial.

PS - you may want to think about using a sep keyboard/monitor with docking station when you're at a desk. I find it's both more comfortable AND more safe for your laptop.

Or, just don't set drinks on the desk. It sounds dumb, maybe, but if you set your can of pop or glass of water on the floor, you won't be spilling it on the laptop unless you break physics.

Well I got an update on the Laptop. I am typing on it right now and it seems ok. The keys are sticky and I can't turn it on if it is plugged in and It won't recognize my IPOD anymore, but other than that i think it is fine.

I take special precautions not to eat or drink around my laptop. I'm glad it came out alive though. Pop the keys off CAREFULLY, and clean it out. (I mean CAREFULLY. Laptop keys EASILY break.)

Good bye 8800GT, 8GB RAM, 2.4 Quad Core and a bunch of other components. I'm still in the process of figuring out what's dead and what isn't. It sucks pretty bad, I'm right there with ya.

For future reference, unplug and turn off your electronics as soon as they get wet. Also, remove the battery, so there is no electricity traveling through the circuits. Then, hang up your hardware or blow dry the shit out of it until you're ABSOLUTELY sure it's dry. Maybe let it sit for 2 or 3 days, dripping every last bit of liquid out of it. This way, nothing gets fried. After my components got wet, I yanked the cord out of the back and tossed them in DRY rice as soon as possible. Dry rice will suck all the moisture and liquid out of your electronics. This technique is used to save cellphones as well.

Yeah, if you take the disc from the hard drive and put it in a working case, it'll work. But BE CAREFUL with the disc, it has to be absolutely clean.

I dumped an entire glass of water into my work laptop last year. It died instantly. I'm not talking about a small spill, it was an entire glass that fell onto the keyboard. I keep my drinks well away from my laptop now.
