View Full Version : The House Of The Dead: Overkill - Gen. Discussion & Info 8/10 says Eurogamer

Sorry guys, it turns out the Sega game to be revealed today wasn't a revival of JGR, but rather a revival of the arcade classic, House of the Dead. That's not too bad of a deal though, right?
It is officially titled The House Of The Dead: Overkill
Is Sega capable of breathing new life into this arcade classic? What are your bets, could this actually be the first good revived Sega classic in awhile?!
.....
Well, while you're pondering that check out the trailer:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/u...es/255235.html (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/255235.html)
More info: scheduled for 2009 on Wii.http://www.gamekyo.com/video12684_nouveau-house-of-the-dead-sur-wii.html
My thoughts? I'd be interested in seeing how this turns out. The concept of a lightgun game feeling natural with a sensor bar seems a little weird, but maybe they have some tricks up their sleeves that'll enable them to accurately emulate that special light gun feel. After all I heard people had some fun with the Resident Evil game, so who knows.
As for the trailer. It didn't really grab me, in fact based on what was shown to me it looks worse than House of the Dead 3. The zombie enemies just seem run of the mill zombies, rather than the distinct green blood oozing zombies of the other games. Not to mention the environments look a little plain. Then again, it's hardly enough footage to go on. Maybe as we get more screenshots it'll be easier to judge.
What do you guys think?

Yeah, there's an interview on IGN where Headstrong says the whole game will have the grindhouse/old-film look. It also has motion-controled melee, so you can rifle-smash monsters who get too close, and the interview hints of dual-welding gunplay.
And for whatever it's worth, the developers are the same folks who did Battalion Wars II, so they have experience with the hardware.
I'm not into zombie games, but I admit the trailer was cool. 8-)

My initial rage has subsided a little, perhaps to mykevermin-levels-of-reaction at this point.
I do love the cover though - "This is like something out of a video game" and "in colour" are nice touches. The nod to the character in zombie movies is a good touch also (I don't keep up with the genre so I don't know who the guy is or what the movie is, but it's the Detective Washington character that is an obvious reference to whoever I'm thinking of).
I must also admit that there's at least two quotes from Kuju/Headstrong Games's producer Neil McEwan that I find particularly delightful:
IGN: This game is looking great. Any final words for Wii fans looking forward to it?
Neil: ...We are making something you are going to have a complete blast playing. ... It’ll beat the shit out of grooming a horse.
and
IGN: How many enemies are you able to show on-screen at any given time?
Neil: .... We did take a look at some screens of a certain other zombie game that is being ported to Wii, and the general consensus was that we thought we could certainly do better.
Translations: Fuck you Ubisoft, and fuck you Capcom.
Nintendo should just pony up and make these guys a second party. It's not like they don't have the cash to buy them out a thousand times over.

Well according to VGChartz the HOTD2+3 combo did sell over 300k in the US, and over 230k in Europe. Sales wise, that's pretty good for a port of the combo that was released on the OG XBox years ago. I think this game will sell just as well at $30, but at $50 I'll be suprised if it manages even 100k total.

If it hits Umbrella Chronicles length, I'll be happy -- that was a reasonably long game that had a lot of stuff to find and unlock. If it's more Ghost Squad/HotD II & III ... that's another story.

It'll be short, it's a light gunish shooter. It's the type of game that should be fun to play multiple times because it's awesomely directed, and you can find out new ways to go about getting to the goal the second time around.

Where the hell is Lethal Enforcers or Virtua Cop ? Or, better yet, where the fuck is a Confidential Mission II ?
I'm not complaining about more zombie shooting by any means. In fact, I'd love it if this were a quality release instead of a quick cash-in port like most all other Sega games. I just don't understand the thought process behind this one. Hell, even Japan got some Virtua Cop action for the PS2 so it would almost be a no-brainer to dump it onto the Wii.

The trailer looks great. Hopefully Sega will be smart and price it at $30 on release day, I just can't see myself spending more then that on a light gun game, no matter how long it is.

Only if you use the Perfect Shot. It is sort of akward on the Zapper, but the aiming and the reloading are almost identical to the arcade style, so brings back a lot of memories and is also great fun. Only wish they actually did something with the graphics, but the gameplay was fun. Can't wait for Overkill.

I agree. I think it should have been $40 at most, but Sega is banking on the "hardcore" angle to cash in.
I too think the game will depreciate quickly, but I got it for $30 so I don't have to wait.
While I sort of echo the sentiments of 'it should be cheaper', I'm willing to let Sega slide. At this point, they are one of the few companies actually putting out some decent (or should be decent) ORIGINAL 3rd party games for the Wii. Honestly, the trifecta of HOTD: Overkill, Mad World, and Conduit are *more* than enough for me to throw some extra funds their way.
Oh, and Overkill is fantastic. It's a total departure from the other HOTDs aesthetics-wise, but it's a really really great original mature Wii title. (Too many words in that sentence!)

On the one hand, I figure that the price for this will drop quickly. On the other hand... what Camoor said. SEGA is being very good to the Wii, and is forcing me to be very bad to my wallet. I just wish there was more time between some of these things. I'd love it if MadWorld got pushed back to, say, August.
Just did my first runthrough with my roommate. Detailed impressions will be up shortly. Short version: holy fucking tits!
EDIT: Okay, here's the long version.
How's the Game Motherfucking Play?
Quite well, actually. It doesn't break new ground and the option to change the camera facing slightly is more-or-less irrelevant, but everything that it does, it does well. The combo system is satisfying (though thanks to the Freeman's Mind videos, I can't help but yell out "American Badass!" every time I get 25 kills in a row) but irrelevant to those of us who would rather just go all-out with our ARs. The continue system is particularly well thought-out - you can immediately hop back into a game at the cost of your ever-so-important score. I found that all but the last boss were comically easy with two people, though. The game plays fast as hell, though there unfortunately occurs every once-in-a-while a situation wherein you can't see the last zombie on screen very well, and thus are forced to look around blindly for a near-invisible (and almost invariably harmless) target. Far more annoying, though, is the fact that you can't break off a reload - not to switch to a secondary weapon to deal with an enemy in your face, and not to fire off a quick shell half-way through reloading your shotgun.
If it sounds like I'm being more negative than positive about the gameplay here that's because it's easier to do it that way. I run out of ways of saying "this was awesome" rather quickly, but I have no trouble nitpicking. So the short of it is that while there are indeed some nits to pick, the gameplay never drops below solid and rarely drops below fucking awesome.
How're the Guns, Motherfucker?
The selection's not the greatest. You start off with a basic handgun and can quickly upgrade to - in order of cost - a shotgun, an SMG, an assault rifle, and an auto-shotgun. Guns can be upgraded in recoil (surprisingly bad on the default pistol), damage, ammo, reload, rate of fire, and power, though a couple start higher by default. Thing is, once you get the auto-shotgun, you have no real use for anything else. The pistol is weak, the shotgun takes too long to reload (which isn't really that long, but the game is very fast-paced, and you can't break off a reload, as I mentioned before), and the other two weapons absolutely murder any chance to get a combo (required to get a good score, which is required to get new guns and upgrade existing ones). So while the AR is extremely satisfying to use and I did break it out from time to time, it's basically the Mask de Smith of House of the Dead.
I complained to my roommate at one point about the lack of a revolver in the game. Imagine my delight on seeing what was unlocked after clearing the game for the first time...
Motherfucker, How's it Look?
Good.
...
What the fuck you want from me? I'm sure it's no DDR or whatever, but yeah, it looks good. The zombies themselves all look well done, especially the bosses. I kinda get weirded out by the shoulders of the two main characters, though what exactly the problem with them is, I could not tell you - something about it just says "uncanny valley" to me. The game will occasionally suffer through slowdown when hordes of flaming zombies mutants flood the screen, though I personally like this, and I don't think that I'm the only person that sees that sort of technical hiccup as a nice throwback to the 16-bit days (my brothers and I used to call it "Sonic Slowdown" after our many races of Sonic 2). Less charming are the occasional full-out stutters, though this never seems to happen during combat, but rather during camera pans. It's also pretty dark during the carnival level, which is weird, because that seems like it should be the most lit-up level.
Do the Writing and Voice Acting Fornicate with their Progenitor?
I've heard it said that Isaac Washington's constant fucks do get a little old. And yes, it's true, they do. My roommate and I are planning on rectifying this by creating a drinking game out of it. One drink for Isaac swearing, two for G, three for Ms. Guns, and anyone with a Goregasm can hand out drinks at will.
But the thing is, even sober, every time you start to half-think, "Okay, Isaac, I get it - just get to killing things already, man!" the quality takes a steep jump. The whole last level is particularly well-written, and the ending is god damn fantastic.
Voice acting is... open to interpretation. Isaac is good, G's inconsistent, and Varla sounds... bored. One third of me thinks that this was just poor voice acting, the other two thirds think that it was a conscious choice to make Varla sound unconcerned for the main characters and her own wellbeing. This is part wishful thinking, and part me not believing that the developers could get so very many things so spectacularly right and yet fuck up on Varla's voice.
Mothafucka!
Indeed.

Agreed with most of Crotch's impressions, though I love Isaac and his constant use of the f-bomb. This will understandably get annoying during repeated playthrough, but at least after the first time it's skipable.
Not enough can really be said about the music. This is one of the few times I wish that there was a soundtrack to buy for the game as it fits the theme well and is all around fantastic.
The lag in single player doesn't bother me as it doesn't happen too often. While playing 2 player though the hitches were worse and while my wife and I were still enjoying the game, it was a noticable distraction. I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue or an optimization problem.
I had trade in credit, but I would've paid full price. I want more of this on the Wii.

Beat Story Mode tonight.
I couldn't possibly love this game any more than I do. It really is utterly fantastic. Totally recommend it, even at $50.
I also can't really believe just how, uh, over-the-top it gets. Seriously, a Wii-exclusive that's *this* M-rated? Some parent group is going to have a field day with this. Ha.
... now, go buy it.
Go.

I got mine today as well. Played it for a coupla hours and had no idea where the time went. Other than the occasional frame rate hiccup, the whole shebang is very well done and oh so over the top! The dialog is hilarious!
No regrets.

This game is amazing.
Lilboo, if you really liked HOTD 2 & 3 as much as you say, go get this game. Now. You are a cheapass, so I don't expect you to have to shell out more than $30 for it if you work hard enough. Even if you pay more, it is worth it. It's like HOTD2 and HOTD3 got together for hot (and slightly angry) intercourse of some kind and then a grubby but hip dwarf limped in and shaped the spongy leftovers into a polio doll. I actually kind of got off track there, but the point was supposed to be that this game is truly amazing. I can't begin to articulate how impressed I am without veering off into special needs fantasies.

LOVE this game!
As a huge horror fan, I love the grindhouse style it delivers. Washington is hilarious and G is great playing the straight man. It's challenging enough but without being too frustrating. My Perfect Shot works wonders with it.
I want that score! I especially dig the techo music during the Screamer boss battle.
Definately worth the $50 even if my mom did buy it for me as a Valentine's day gift.

I mentioned it just to give a little shout out to my mom for being so awesome. She knew I wanted it, but she also knew things were a little tight for the fiancee and I with the new baby. I'm 25 and still get an Easter basket on Easter. Guess it is a perk of being an only child?
Anyways, I am having such a blast with this game. The replay factor is definately high on this.

So yeah, just going to second the comments that this game is fucking great. Only complaint is that there are quite a few hiccups in framerate, but it really didn't detract from the experience or hinder gameplay. If you're interested in playing - go fucking buy it!

Heh. Towards the end of the regular mode, things just become so damn easy with the auto-shotgun.
Then you start the director's cut.
Then the game says, "Fuck you, The Crotch. Fuck. You."

I just tell myself that authentic grindhouse movies skip frames all the time. After I've sold myself on that notion, the game becomes flawless!8-)
I hope the "hand cannons" come out here in the US. If not I guess I could import them...

Doesn't appear to be that way.
Further thoughts: dual wielding is fuckin' awesome. The second unlockable movie is lame as fuck. And it is gonna take a helluva long time to be able to afford the final gun...

Picked up the game last Friday and had a blast, my roommate and I tore through the first campaign in about two hours. Only played "director's cut" for a few minutes. I picked up a Nyko Perfect Shot since my roommate only has a Wii Zapper. While it was "okay" as far as console guns go, I sure was feeling the pain on the last boss! Thing is like squeezing a brick! :joystick:
Unfortunatly I have to work all the damn time but tomorrow after my ten hour shift is the start of a three day weekend! What makes it even better is the nice postman brought me a little gift sent via "Royal Mail".

Feels great too me, though firearms are usually a little barrel heavy. Especially a handcannon like this! Seriously the grip is worth it alone, way more comfortable than the Nyko Perfect Shot and better than the Wii Zapper IMO. Still have yet to play with it, about to go to the bar. I'll update with how drunken House of the Dead goes when we get back tonight. ;)

Is the Resident Evil Shot Gun Blaster considered rare? Our Gamestop had 2 of them and we are thinking about picking both of them up. I think one would work nice for HotD:Overkill and maybe selling the other one?
I've heard it's rare... but it sucks. I know, it looks cool, but it's just not that great.
Plastic feels cheap, and the trigger isn't anywhere near responsive enough to warrant not just using the remote by it's lonesome. This is simply my opinion, obviously, but it's certainly not worth anywhere near the $20 they're charging for it. Shame, too, I was really looking forward to it.

Appreciate the information! I must admit, it does look really cool in the package. We went ahead and picked both of them up at Gamestop. My fiancee really likes it, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. He did complain that the nunchuck attachment is a bit hard to come off and on, and he's a very strong fellow! We are going to put the other one up on Ebay and hopefully flip a bit of a profit. They have been going anywhere from $40-60.

To anyone that has played and beaten House of the Dead: Overkill, let me ask a question: I bought it on Friday as part of the B2G1 free sale over at the 'ol GS and my girlfriend and I beat it in a matter of hours. We started to play the mini-games and the game froze. I think it's a defective copy and I'm tempted to take it back, however, there are only a handful of GameStop's in the area that even carry it, so my other option is to just get a refund. I want to know though, is the Director's Cut really worth keeping the game for? What other kind of incentives are there for continuing to play? I saw there were a lot of LOCKED items in the extra menu, but what are they? One of the extras I unlocked was a 3D model of a Zombie Nurse... which was really lame. If all the other extras are like this I can't say I'd bother with them.

You can turn off the rumble that happens when your cursor hits an enemy, but firing and reloading still rumbles, which is all the time.

If you liked MadWorld, you'll have a blast with Overkill. Grab a friend for co-op and things are even better. :)

Dear This Game.
Can you go on sale.. like a good below $40 sale or just drop in price in general?
That'd be swell.

Just go buy it used at Gamestop and then return it within the week for the refund. There's really no need to buy this game and keep it -- at least I didnt think so. It's fun, but you put it in the Wii and finish it all in one sitting.
You can also rent it or just Goozex it and then send it back out.
Just my thoughts.

Just my thoughts.Like I've said, it can function as a good drinking game.

It has become my goal to play all lightgun-style Wii games. HotD: Overkill is the best one I've played so far.
HotD: Overkill
Ghost Squad
Wild West Guns
---Need to play---
RE: Umbrella Chronicles
RE: Darkside Chronicles
HotD 2 & 3
NERF N-Strike
Target: Terror (for the lulz)
and probably some WiiWare too. (Onslaught IIRC) Am I missing any?

What about that one Duck Hunter game?

House of the Dead 2 and 3 is pretty good, quite a bit of content and it's at a lower price ($30 I believe). There are also some extras and quite a bit of good co-op action for replay later on.
The stories are not as good as Overkill, but the games are still good - spent a few days with my little bro playing it nonstop when I first got it.

By light gun I assume you mean rail shooter? If so that's not onslaught. It's a fps (lot of arcade feel and very linear, but you control your movements)
also, lol@target terror

I think 2 and 3 is down to $20 now. Onslaught is an FPS, not a light gun game. Link's Crossbow Training is largely made up of light gun, although there are some shooter portions.
Since you counted Darkside Chronicles, I assume you include upcoming games too, so don't forget Dead Space: Extraction. I think MOH: Heroes 2 has a light-gun mode, although I'm not sure about that.

Hotd 2&3 retails at 30 still. But is on sale for 16 at newegg right now if anyone is looking for it.
MoH H2 does have an on rails mode (called arcade mode) in addition to a fps campaign. It follows the main story mode, but I have heard some parts get cut from it.

Loving the game so far. Just finished the train level. It is kind of funny how the game gets easier as you go along instead of harder.

I just got the game today and I'm loving it. I've only got to the carnival level, but so far the game is really funny and shooting zombies is fun. It seems like it will be worth the $30 I paid for it.

I just got it yesterday, while fun, it's nowhere as good and well paced as HotD II.

The ice cream truck scene makes it completely worth it. 8-)

I bought it with madworld during the BB sale thing. Trying to plow through MW so I can put it up for sale before starting Overkill. Besides, I have a buddy who'd love the chance to play through it along with me so I've been waiting. I'm glad to see it getting a good word here as I love the arcade HOTD's. I'm itching to try out the hand cannon I just got for it.

Great freaking game. The part right before the last boss is classic, and the characters are all awesome. The developers absolutely nailed it. If more people weren't on their whole "Wii is for kids, all the games suck, motion control sucks, BUT Natal is awesome" pedestals, then they wouldn't miss out on games like this. The camera movement made me dizzy at times, but the fact that they added extras, extra modes, and you can't get all the weapons on your first run through make it worth it.
Oh yeah, and I guess it wouldn't be proper to talk about the game unless I added motherfucker somewhere. So...fucking motherfucker.

Last night I finally got a chance to try the game out, with the game passing through my possession temporarily... and it definitely seems like a lot of fun, but I'd really want to play it with a zapper or other gun attachment. It's a little weird playing it just with the remote and I like the idea of turning off the on-screen site and using your aim to make the shots (love that you can do that and that it calibrates). So I'm definitely going to have to pick this game up at some point.

OMG!
Look what I found buried in the HotD: O minisite!
It's called "Overkill Fansite Kit". Along with the usual screenshots and logos, there's a folder called "Suffer Like G Did".

Welcome... friends.
You've completed our hidden trail of terrifying folder-after-folder torture, and for your troubles, we present to you this batch of Overkill boss art, never before seen by the unwavering eyes of the internet.
How could anyone do this.
The naming structure is really well done too. Is SEGA fucking with us, or were they trying to guage how many people would buy a TotD remake by putting this stuff in here? Unfortunately, nobody cared enough until a year after it came out.

That's ironic ;)
Dug this one up last weekend and finished it out today. I abso-fuckin'-lutely love popping motherfucking heads with shotguns in videogames and the auto shotty was a MUST for me as soon as I had the funds; needless to say it delivered and made the starting gun seem like a BB gun in comparison (couldn't get a goregasm for the life of me with it).
My *only* gripe about the game was the slowdowns and stutters here and there which threw me off mid-combo but it doesn't ruin the experience. Game has top notch presentation and ambiance and you can tell that this is what the developers had in mind when they set out to make it. Hopefully there will be a sequel.

I wish I could find this game. It's still $40 at most retailers and when it was on sale for $15 new at one store everyone bought them for trade fodder. fucking hoarders.
