Looks like we won't be seeing The Lord Of The Rings: Trilogy Extended Editions set any time soon.
The original trilogy has been delayed till 2010:

It's back on. A settlement to the lawsuit was announced yesterday. It looks like Guillermo Del Toro will still be directing.

I don't know if anyone else picked up the Office Season 5 BR, but I don't think I can watch the older episodes anymore until they re-release them on blu-ray!
My only wish is that there was an option to watch full episodes with the deleted scenes included where they belong.

I'm gonna shill this one more time:
Win a Copy of Supernatural Season 4 on Blu-ray (http://bluviews.moviemansguide.com/?p=565)
It ends TODAY and we have a little over 50 entries and 5 copies to give away. That means you have a 1 in 10 chance of winning a $50 Blu-ray.
The next contest will suck your blood....

I was at Sams Club last night and I was looking at their 120hz HDTVs, they were displaying Pixar Cars and Bedtime stories on a Vizio and Samsung...they looked really good, except when they moved. It looked jittery...is this what 120hz does to Blu-Rays or could it be the settings they had on their TVs?

if anyone is planning on picking up creepshow i'd wait
my copy only has 2.0 audio even though it says 5.1. read a couple of other posts about the same thing
I keeping hearing it has the same audio from the DVD version.
Is it at least better than the DVD enough for a $10 purchase, or should we stick to upscaling the DVD until a better edition comes along (even if we have to import it again)?

I'd wonder what cables they were using and I'd assume they were kinda crappy for 120hz. Or they were miss marked. 120hz is suppose to help that not hurt it. It's a higher frame rate. I think...

I have a 120Hz Sony XBR6 and have no problems at all with jittery picture on BR. Both Cars and Bedtime Stories look phenomenal on my TV, Cars especially.
If you're judging a TV by what you're seeing at the store, you really need to think that one through, since you'll never see it in an optimal environment that way.

Yeah that's what I figured. Both advertised anti-blur tech. I think that's what made it seem weird...there was no fluid movements...almost looked like wind-up toys.
That whole "hz" topic is such a grey area. For one thing, the effect of having the faster refresh on an LCD will depend on the motion-blur smoothing tech per each different manufacturer of TV. Secondly, everyone's brains/eyes will perceive the effect differently. Myself personally, I'll just stick to 120hz Sony Motion Flow because I can kind of perceive a positive effect with those TVs. I can't generally tell shit at 240hz. But that's just my own personal preference. Plasma, of course, would eliminate that whole issue. I'm not sure if my next TV will be Plasma or LED or whatever the new tech will be at that point though.
As for Linkin's personal experience, I'm not sure what would cause the jitter. I think some of the earlier sets did have some tearing or glitching when set to the highest motion compensation settings. Alternatively, the sets could have had those features disable for some inexplicable reason. Most retail demo sets are never calibrated to any kind of optimal viewing from what I've encountered anyways...

Not gonna happen. They are delaying it because they don't want to interfere with sales of their glorious over-priced boxsets. They will release them as Theatricals and then as EEs. EEs may now be much later.
I bet when they eventually arrive the 'created' date will be dometime in September showing they didn't delay them to do anything 'special' to them - just to pad out what's going to be a very low Q1 next year. They did the same thing with the TMNT films (these were supposed to come in Q1 of this year).
You'd be amazed what titles have bounced around this year. Some of you guys would cry. Studios are really scared to release too many big titles as consumers have a limited amount of money. Apparently, they think next year consumers will just be loaded.

Ignore dumb posters at fan-based forums. Its 2.0 TrueHD and has better quality over a DVD audio track. (792kbps IIRC)
The only 'better' version would be the Region 2 DVD which has Special Features that Warner refused to license in America. It does have a 5.1 audio track but the film was made with 2.0 (well, 4.0 but its matrixed) in mind. So 5.1 is kinda iffy. The BD is very faithful to how it should look and sound.

That's why I never believe what I'm seeing at a store will be the "best" picture.

If you're looking as plasma as your next set, there's a shrinking number of vendors in that arena, so the prices will probably starting moving upwards. My next set will be non-edge lit LED, though those are in the "oh crap, how much was that TV" prices at the moment. Samsung B8000 series I think is a good example of it, though I need to check to see if they're non-edge lit or edge lit like the B7000 and B6000 series.

Any word on E.T.?
I am watching it on the HBO family HD channel right now and it looks fantastic (even at 720p).
The only scene that looks odd was the one where the agents searching for the landing party are silhouetted infront of the city's skyline, it becomes very evident that the city light's background is some-kind of a backdrop with lights.

I think, checking IMDB, that I'd want the following on BR:
Minority Report
AI
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
Jaws
Indiana Jones 1-3
Empire Of The Sun
Hook
1941
The Terminal
Munch
War Of The Worlds
Though, oddly enough, as I check IMDB, I noticed that there's a remake of When Worlds Collide that he's producing. :-s Let's hope that's not a mess like When The Earth Stood Still was in last year's remake.

I have never seen the new Indiana Jones so I can't comment either way on it.
I just know War of the Worlds was a terrible movie, for any director.

It's one of his worst movies. Most Spielberg fans will tell you that -- and it's right on par with WAR OF THE WORLDS. Jeff Goldblum's mixed-race daughter (who looks nothing like him at all, but that's another matter) karate-chopping a raptor was an embarrassing moment for any director.

LOTR fans knew that there was going to be a Extended Edition so they waited for that. It's no surprise HP followed suit as it is the next major film to have huge success off a novel. Both movie franchises had their running time cut short for a theatrical release so you just know they were going to be extended editions.
zeb06
09-21-2009, 08:46 PM
Yeah, but they are doing it again with LotR on bluray lol. Not saying I blame them, I will probably yet again end up buying both, but from everything I have read they have said they will probably wait a couple more years before they release the extended versions of LotR.
As far as Harry Potter, even with the extended stuff, the HP movies leave way way too much out and their extended cuts were not near as much footage...so it isn't too big of a deal, I will probably be able to hold out on them.

Yea I hear you about traditional and computer animation, but wasn't W&G stop-motion animation with plasticine-clay models (and shot on film-stock)?
That is something that could get could get really screwed up when processed, unlike CGI or hand-cell animation. The beauty is in the subtle / minute textures on the clay and evidence of being hand crafted. Some bad film DNR/EE could obliterate what makes those films "charming."

WOW never would have thought Disney would put this out however I'm sure their are other things that I would have never associated with them that they did. I read a few months back that Kevin wanted to make another DVD with more content for the anniversary of the movie but Criterion wouldn't let him. In the article he said that Criterion does not double dip. The way it read I thought Criterion would be the one to release it.
Any word on the extras that will be in the Clerks BD? I'm sure the video quality can not be that much greater and to me looks fine the way it is for how low budget it was, but I'm wondering about the extras. Will it have more than Clerks X or just the same ones.

That is truly hilarious- highdefdigest.com has made me groan with many a review. My favorite is Peter M. Bracke calling Reservoir Dogs "mean spirited" and one-starring the film. Nothing ever came back from WB.com about it. My guess is that it's only for WBShop.com and $41.99 will be as cheap as we see it, until we get close to release and we get the usual price warfare from DD.com, Walmart.com and Amazon.com.

Terrible beyond words and sadistically funny, nice to see they are keeping up with their high standards of "quality" reviews.I stopped using HDD.com's "film review" section of their reviews, since the ones on BluRay.com and DVDTalk.com are much better. I use their PQ and AQ comparisons against other sites, just their "film review" section of their review has been more than comical in the last few weeks.
Rats, I can't order one-sy two-sy from wbshop 'cause they charge me an assload on shipping (even "handling" charges for the free shipping promos).

I was at walmart today and some one was asking about transformers 2 and the guy checked to see the number of preorders they already had for it. The guy said that the scan gun was showing him 200 had already been preordered.
As for the amazon trade in I'm sending in 35 dvds/box sets out monday that should if they take all of them give me 100 in credit. I'm just wondering then if I will get 10 or 20 for the promo they have going. I would have devided them up but only bought one box to ship them in and it was large enough for all of them.
I'm going to have to use that credit for Trick r treat as no place around here even has it. I have to drive about a half hour. Thats not to bad but I just don't want to drive it. Not when it is 10 bucks less on amazon and I will have the credit in a few weeks.

What's the difference in the covers for transformers 2? (links) When comparing walmart.com to other websites, they all look the same. Few have mentioned walmart having better cover art but all I see is the damn close up of optimus from the chest up which I hate. Transformers 2-disc se was nice with the white background and optimus and megatron on opposite sides.

The guy who mentioned Walmart having it for 20 is right...
About two weeks ago they were running a Transformer sale, and releasing new toys, and on the page, you could see TF2 on Bluray listing it as the 2 disc big screen edition for 20 bucks.
I wondered why they did that, as the movie didn't come out for a couple of weeks, so I went ahead and snatched one, so I could show them incase they tried to sell it for higher.
The walmart version will indeed have the IMAX scenes, and even the bluray disc itself says big screen edition on it when gotten from Walmart.

I'm not normally one of the types to get hyped about the OOP and/or criterion craze but as I was reading about The Third Man I saw a lot of comparisons to Casablanca and I just had to know if those comparisons were valid so I went ahead a placed an order for it.
Its climbed to #11 on Amazon top sellers so obviously there's a little bit of buzz surrounding it.

Nice price since wbshop was $38.99 w/20%. I went w/wbshop when they had that stacking coupon bonanza (on pre-orders) so mine's is roughly $29, but if that falls through, I'd jump on Amazon's price no problem.

It's nothing like CASABLANCA. It is a classic movie, but it's one of those films that scholars and hard-core old-time movie buffs are going to enjoy more than, say, "casual" viewers. If you don't like B&W film noir, character-driven movies I'm not sure how much you'd like it -- but give it a chance, and you can always sell it when it's more collectible.
I picked it up when Amazon had it on Blu for $14 earlier this summer, and did enjoy it, but then again, I like a lot of '40s noir movies.

Thanks, guys. A purchase has been made, BB, $20. One of my favorite Michael Mann movies and the shootout in the street is still hold-your-breath intense.
It's $16.49 @ Amazon. Why do I think this type of re-release will get cheaper closer to BF?
Ah frack, Heat jumped up to $17.99 since I saw it this morning. Now I wish I had picked it up. :p
Edit: one odd thing I noticed is that Amazon is offerring The Third Man BR for $19.99, but as "Temporarily Out of Stock". I wonder if this placeholdering a different, non-Criterion version, or if Amazon is confident they'll find another allocation somewhere? I might order it for giggles.

Clerks wouldn't be much to upgrade on for Blu-Ray given it was shot on very poor film to begin with. Chasing Amy outside of the DNR certainly is a upgrade. Its too bad Disney decided it needed the DNR since the film's grainy look only adds to the look of the film.

Nice mini-review. I really like Alan Parker's films, they often feel a little "hollywood ending" at times but he still manages to hold my attention.
I was specifically worried about how the ending would hold up. It's one of those endings that was much less of a cliché and less predictable at the time of release.

I actually went to a local Best Buy in San Dimas, CA and there was a small sign stating that they price match online store prices. So I went and asked a worker there if they can PM Amazon. She said yes you can as long it is sold by Amazon and not a third-party store. So I'm gonna be using my RZ more often since I can price match :)

Anyone know if Panasonic players do netflix or how that all works? I know I saw a Panny that looked like the 60 with netflix on the box and I was wondering if that was in a firmware upgrade since I know they haven't supported it up to this time. I know the older boxes don't have anything mentioning it, but the newer style boxes in BB and HH Gregg both mentioned it. I can't find anything about a revision of hardware or anything that would specify a difference or an upgrade in the 60 about it adding Netflix though.
Panasonic players don't do Netflix at this time. For whatever reason, the two companies have not formed any type of partnership. Panny players do have Amazon Video, though.

Hey guys... sorry to shit in the thread if I am.. but can I get some recommended sub-$175 BD players or brands? I would like wireless and capable off playing vids of an ext HDD or USB (if any can do .mkv even sweeter). I know PS3 would be the best bet but not really looking to spend that much even though I know it is a very solid machine (I used to own one but sold it awhile back). Just want to stick with my PC and 360 for gaming. Thanks!
I know a number of people who use their PS3 primarily for blu ray movies and rarely, if ever play games on it. Honestly, the PS3 is your best bet for wifi, ext. storage, etc.. I'd just save up and get that. Most of the sub-$200 players sacrifice on one or more of the features you're looking for. For example, the Samsung BDP1600 on sale @ BB this week does stream, but you need to buy the wifi adapter separately.

You missed out on a couple of months of amazing deals on new releases as well as the $5 Target coupon (combined with sales/pricematches/manufacturer's coupons) that was simply amazing. Although, the coupon still scans even though it's expired.
Check out amazon's top sellers; there might still be some awesome deals there though nothing like Black Friday and the weeks around it. Best Buy has some decent $9.99 Blu Rays this week, check amazon for the pricematch on those. Oh and Costco has had some simply fantastic prices on a variety of quality titles.

I need guidance from my fellow CAG's who are wise in the way of Blu.
Just finally popped off and got my HDTV (Samsung 46") and Blu-Ray (Panasonic DMP-BD60) ordered on Amazon. Went to Best Buy to buy some Blu's since I found better deals and warranties on Amazon. Figured I could turn the gift card from Xmas into a good surge protector and movies. I was quite saddened to see how badly BB failed with their prices. Amazon beat them by 25-50% on most of the movies!
While it's impossible to predict the prices in the coming weeks and months, what is the good low water mark I could find some of these movies for? I figure (and sorta remember) many of them being lower and I'm trying to decide how long to hold out. The cheap-ass side of me is balking at their upped prices, especially including tax. And should I hold out on any of these movies due to a poor Blu-ray transfer?
The Usual Suspects, Memento, The Dark Knight, Fight Club, Star Trek, Sin City, Iron Man.
Those movies have a bad transfer?

Those movies have a bad transfer?
That's what I'm inquiring about. The Usual Suspects and Memento blu's looked pretty bare bones and I was wondering to the quality of the transfer of any of them.
I can personally vouch for TDK, Sin City, Star Trek, and Iron Man since I own those.
Off the top of my head, I believe the other titles got pretty good reviews too, though as you mention, some of them don't have much over the DVD beyond the 1080p upgrade.

I had the good fortune of getting a BR player for Christmas ... but I have an input shortage, and need a little help:
Currently running my two HDMI ports with the Xbox 360 and HD cable box ... at this point, I have the BR running component, but would like to go HDMI with it.
What would folks who know what they're doing do here? I was thinking about going component with the 360, HDMI with the BR.
The whole setup is running on a 4-yr old 1080i DLP set. I'm worried the BR is as clear as it'll get on my TV. Still good, but I want better! haha, thanks in advance for any assistance.

HDMi is the way to go for the blu-ray palyer, you will be getting the best picture possibly + audio. The reason being is you can't get 720p, 1080i or 1080p out of component on a blu-ray player(component connection is not HDCP compliant), so your only getting 480p pciture, so I would definitely switch the blu-ray player over to HDMi and the Xbox over to component, so you can get full HD out the blu-ray player

haha ... don't know why i didn't think of that. I had a similar device for my coax stuff back in the day; it didn't even occur to me to look for something like that.
Thanks for the tips and links, fellow CAGs.

Another question, I'm going to be setting up this entertainment center away from my cable modem. I'll move my Xbox as well. So I'm thinking of setting up a bridge to connect these to my wireless internet (already have a WRT54G sitting over by my cable modem). Recommendations on brand/set-up?

ok.. WTF is up with The Final Destination.
Reviews say that the 3d version is supposed to be included... but the disc i bought only brought one disc.. and no mention of 3d anywhere...

That link takes you to amazon where the box has "3D" and its supposed to include digital copy.. but the amazon link takes you to a normal version with no mention of 3d. (like the one i just bought)

ATTENTION FOR ALL WARNER RELEASES:
3D, DVD, Digital Copy, Slipcovers are for FIRST PRESSINGS only.
If you bought a movie and it excludes any of the above, it's because you bought a pressing that was not the FIRST PRESSING. The extra stuff above is simply that - extra stuff to get people to buy on release day/week. Warner only allots a certain amount of that extra stuff, and after that, it's gone. It's a Limited thing.
- Bonus Round! Do you have a newer Warner release with a Slip Cover? Look at it - notice how it mentions Digital Copy/DVD/3D etc on it? Now look at the cover art on the Blu-ray - notice has it does not mention any of that? It's so Warner can re-use that cover art when it finishes its first run without remaking/printing new covers.
(Not directed at you, but this is being discussed in some many places we can just copy/paste this where needed)

thanks bro... this fucking sucks.
It makes no sense. I bought it one fucking week after release. I actually tried to purchase it last weekend but my BB was out of em.

Oh wow. Knew that about slipcovers but not 3D stuff. Interesting. Glad I got TFD with 3D on it.

You guys got Final Destination for $20 right??
I may just go ahead and get it now, and not miss out on Limited time thing. Any place still got it for $19.99?

The first pressing is done with. It's luck now if you find a 3D version.

Not really, I don't think.
It's not really that popular. I bet I can still find it, just for $20 or for higher price, that's the question! And, I am NOT paying more than $20!

First pressing is done. That's a fact. Only the first 100k (what I heard) include slip covers and 3D. There may still be 3D versions out there, but not many. Most stores have already ordered third pressings of the title (i.e. sold out twice). So if you want it...go now and try and find it.
But anyway, the Red/Blue 3D sucks. Warner is only doing this Limited press so they can release the 'real' 3D at the end of the year. At a bloated pricetag, of course.

I am not debating THAT fact, I am just betting I can STILL find it.

Glad I saw this, just got a new one off of ebay for $19.50 shipped with the 3D version. Just started to venture in this section of the site and didn't know these were limited. Guy has 100% feedback and tons of sales so it should work out.

Looks like BSG: The Complete Series on BR is getting a double-dip, apparently with better/slimmer packaging, with the inclusion of "The Plan" with it:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/Universal/Battlestar_Galactica:_The_Complete_Series_Blu-ray_Reissue_/4159
Also looks like if you want the new/revised packaging to replace what you have with the "current" release, you can send them the Season One top flap and you'll get new packaging in 4-6 weeks:

That would be awesome! Anyone know if that form is posted somewhere or if we need to e-mail customer service as well
I just sent them an e-mail through their form (http://www.universalstudios.com/contact_form.php?email_id=10)

According to that post above, it was something that person received via email from Universal directly. You might need to contact someone there to see what the details are.
