I should mention I just ordered both Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn. Sin City may arrive sometime next year...but I don't see Dusk coming.

After shipping it worked out to be about $45 for both shipped to California. Not bad.

I think the sequels get a bum rap. Of course they're not as good as the original but how could they be? The Matrix completely changed the way we perceive action and sci-fi movies. It was truly revolutionary. Considering how high the expectations were for them the sequels couldn't possibly be as good. I agree that the sequels definitely have their flaws but they're still enjoyable movies.

Indeed. In all actuality, Reloaded was a very, very good movie. It got pretty positive reviews and made a ton of money. Matrix Revolutions, of course, was a pretty big flop, both critically and financially (considering how much money Reloaded). That being said, I know I can't go a month without watching the final fight scene.

bigdaddybruce44

The PQ on the first two films isn't very good, Die Hard with a Vengeance is all right, and Live Free or Die Hard looks and sounds great. I picked up that set up for about $70, because I am massive fan of the films. For $43, used or new, you'd have to pry my fingers off the copy.

#1 & 2 aren't probably going to ever look any better than they are now. The only downfall of the set is that DH4 isn't the Unrated cut, but that's only a minor nusiance.

The releases for films on Bluray is way too slow in my book. I mean there's a chunk I still wanna buy that's out now, and more that are coming out, but I love all types of movies MANY of which will probably never see the light of day on Blu.

bigdaddybruce44

Indeed. In a way, though, it really doesn't matter to me, because of the prices. I don't mind paying $20 for a brand-new movie that looks and sounds amazing in HD. But there are so many catalog titles that I refuse to buy, because I'm not paying the same price for minimal improvement over DVD.

What I really want is Children of Men (euro edition) as I've seen nothing about a domestic release in a year.

Since they were able to sell them for far more then $100 after I doubt that.

Have we had any comparisons between the two or are we already in the assume mode that the BD is better? Because I'd be more then happy to point to several releases where the HD DVD remains superior - even though it came out first.

Just picked up the Planet of the Apes box set. Two things that I do not like about it are 1) the way the discs fit in the case and 2) the fact that they do not include the new movie from 2001.

The way the disc fits in the case is just bull shit and they could have well should have done it differently. They just have this circule that seems to be made of rubber cement that they use to hold that paper that is usually on the back of box sets. It seems like it will come off easly and the disc to me does not seem to fit on it as well as it did once you take it off. So I suggest getting cases for them.

The second thing is the fact that it does not include the 2001 movie. I'm sure most people do not like it however I didn't think it was all that bad. It would have been nice to see this as one large box set of the movies and the tv show like they did in the past but this time on BD.

Other then that this set seems great. The picture looks good and the audio even on my tv is really nice. If you are into the movies I suggest you pick it up but also get some other cases to put the discs in.

GizmoGC could you point on the HD DVDs that are superior to the BD? I stll wouldn't mind picking up some HD DVDs seeing how I can still play them and would like to get the better of the 2.

I don't have a list handy...but many Warner HD DVDs have either a TrueHD or DD+ track while the BD does not (a good example is Happy Feet). Also several Universal BDs dropped features and added some EE/DNR (End of Days, Both Mummy Films, U-571, Thing).

I'm not sure what EE/DNR is? I guess anything from Warner and Universal I want to see I should get on HD and not BD then. It would be nice if they would stop this BS of including something in one set but not another. I can see them making a standard edition and an extra/director/collectors edition with more but that should be the end of it. I don't like this where the BD has less then the HD and some times the HD has less then even the DVD. With BD/HD people pay a higher price and shuld get more then just video and audio quality.

digital noise reduction - gets rid of things like grain, dirt, scratches, etc. leads to artifacts

Hey Blu-Ray wise ones,

I was thinking about getting my Dad a Blu Ray player for his birthday and I was wondering what you folks thought of the Sony BDPS350.

Some background info, my folks have only just bought an HD telly (might be a Bravia, not sure) it's 42inch and does 1080p I believe. My Dad's not much of an audiophile and he doesn't have 5.1 speakers or anything.

So what I'm asking is, is the Sony BDPS350 a decent starter level Blu-Ray player? Are there any problems with it ?

Also are Blu-Ray discs region-free ?

Thanks in advance.

IIRC Paramount and Universal BRs have all been region-free. Sony, Warner/New Line, Lionsgate, and Fox have mix of coded and non-coded, although most of their current BR lines are region-free, particularly the newest releases.

Japan, and most of east Asia (where the BR manufacturers are based) share the same BR region as the US.

The 350 is a solid "entry level" BR player. IIRC about all it won't do is change resolution on the fly. I guess if you really wanted just a standalone player, this one is good enough for most people, although the PS3 is still a better value overall, particularly with the holiday specials going on now and in the very near future.

Thanks, I'd get a PS3 myself but my Dad is in the UK so it would be a lot more expensive for me and I don't think my folks would use any of the other PS3 features. Plus they probably won't want one sitting in the living room, it's a bit big.

Within the next few weeks I am planning on buying a BR player. Now I have seen that most of these BR discs have an extra disc containing a digital copy of the movie for use with an IPOD. What file format is this and can I just convert it to another format? I don't have an IPOD but my LG Voyager plays movies when converted with Super (c). Is the 3rd disc a standard DVD with a SD verison of the movie is it something else?

No it's not a DVD in that you can play it in a standard DVD Player. It is a file on a DVD Disc. Depending on the movie, the file can be either a WMV, MP4 file, etc.

Each studio has their own standards they use for the file.

This is part of the confusion with the Digital Copy system. You may have a device that will play the digital copy from one studio but not from another. There is no sort of universal standard established for it.

So far, only one movie I know of actually came with a Regular SD-DVD which was Disney's Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray, and it was specifically marketed to say that it included a DVD copy, not a digital copy.

You know I noticed in my copy of RE: E SD-DVD it has a digital copy too, but has some funky code sheet I have to enter and need to go on the internet, so I said fuck it and extracted it using dvd decrypter. I thought these DC where standard VOB files with a converter program designed just for that file.

A WMV/MP4 is already compressed again from the original format, so reconverting it again will lose visual quality.

Yeah the "funky code sheet" is to authorize the license to your PC so that you are authorized to play the file it will copy to hard drive via DRM.

I think the internet connection is to check the code that you enter so you can download the digital copy.

Digital Copy is a nice idea in theory but if you download the movie to your PSP or iPod, it is stuck there and you can't move it.

With BR discs having 50 gigs of space, there is plenty of room to dump a 5 gig SD movie. Not every movie uses up the entire disc. Yes I agree it's confusing a lot of people. SD movies need to become a shit load cheaper (under 10 bucks sometime next year. Forcing us to buy a SD movie at the 22 mark to get the second extra's disc and the digital copy is just too much.

Since they were able to sell them for far more then $100 after I doubt that.

Have we had any comparisons between the two or are we already in the assume mode that the BD is better? Because I'd be more then happy to point to several releases where the HD DVD remains superior - even though it came out first.

No, I totally regret importing Band Of Brothers and Equilibrium.

Your generally not converting the video but getting the video from a regular DVD onto your computer. At least that is the way it worked with Rambo. My laptop does not have a bluray drive but the digital copy came via a DVD. As to why one would want to view it on a 3 inch screen? Oh maybe to pass the time on a bus ride, train ride, place ride etc. etc.

Speaking of Lost...

Got my S4 Blu-ray today...and just as I expected, Disney changed the outer box. Gone is the nice hard cardboard style case with velcro and instead we get a simple slipcase. Sigh. Getting tired of the studios changing the way the slip cases look compared to other sets/movies (POTC, Smallville, Saw films etc.)

Its accurate. The video quality is utter garbage.. its surprising coming from NBC as HEROES looks phenomenal. but I think it was shot with different cameras or something.. can't honestly remember.

The audio quality blows because its a dobly digital 5.1 release.. Im seriously betting on a rerelease later on down the road if the show does well and goes past the second season.

I was passing on it because of the DD 5.1 sound until it was cheaper, though if the video quality is that bad, I'll pass on it on BR, unless they re-release it.

Hopefully they will re-release it, and it'll have cleaned-up video and better audio.

Here is my PQ assessment:
“Chuck: Season One” arrives on Blu-ray presented in its original aspect ratio 1.78:1 on 3 discs (one 50GB and two 25GB Discs). Many were unsure if the quality would be boosted thanks to Blu-ray due to the typically bad look on NBC... but “Chuck” shines through. I compared this to an HD episode I had saved on my DVR and found it to be much nicer - colors were more vibrant and everything just looked a bit more define. Now, it may not be as nice as “Pushing Daisies”... but this is still an excellent transfer.
4 out of 5

Personally, I think HDD shouldn't be comparing a TV Show to something like Iron Man or Incredible Hulk. Two, totally different mediums.

Then why does Chuck fail to look as good as other HD shows on BD?

4 out 5?
....

Ice2Dragon is right about this one. And HDD.

Why? Because its filmed differently. Its one of the worst looking HD shows on TV. The BD improves upon that picture greatly. Are we going to fault films from the 1950's that don't look as good as Iron Man or The Incredible Hulk? HDD giving the show a 2 in PQ is a joke. At the very least I could see why some would give it a 3.25 but to me, its a 4.

Josh Z from DVDTalk posted the following:

The NBC broadcasts of Chuck are some of the very worst "High Definition" I've ever seen. The show has really bad, ugly photography caked in layers and layers of grain. It's soft and dupey, and often doesn't look better than VHS quality.

The Blu-ray will probably rectify some of NBC's macroblocking and motion artifact problems, but I wouldn't hold out hope for a stunning "eye candy" presentation.

And Chuck has really bad photography for a show on any major network. It's shot on 16mm, but that's not the crux of the problem.

My 4 is not alone.

HDDNews gave it a 4 for PQ
http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/?p=6990

DVDTalk gave it a 3.5 for PQ
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/35353/chuck-the-complete-first-season/

Another site gave it an 8.8 out of 10 (so 4.25-4.50)
http://www.dbtechno.com/product-reviews/2008/11/06/chuck-the-complete-first-season-blu-ray-review/

So clearly I am not alone with the score - HDD is. But that's the thing about reviews (opinions) we all have them :)

dallow
11-26-2008, 02:17 PM
So it should get a good rating because the show has bad PQ on the air?
I guess you can say it is true to the source, but that's hardly saying anything.

Things have to be rated in context, and that's why older films like my copy of 20 Million Miles to Earth on BD I'd give high ratings to.

(that being said, Chuck isn't unwatchable or anything, it looks pretty good, but pretty good should equal an average score for a show filmed in 2008)

Have you seen the show before? If not, its a great blind buy. Season Two is quickly becoming my favorite show on TV right now. The DD5.1 sound is a disappointment since I know Warner could have done TrueHD....but they are not likely to double-dip on this title ever again.

Yes. If you watched the HD broadcast and the BD you would be shocked at the difference between the two. The difference is very noticable. I didn't notice all the issues that HDD did, but I could clearly see the difference when A/Bing back and fourth between the HD broadcast and BD.

But this is Warner so who really knows. They once again jammed as many episodes as possible on to a disc and gave it DVD sound. It's possible this could have looked a hell of a lot better had they spent more time with it but for $30 its an easy purchase IMO. They pulled this crap with Pushing Daisies, Smallville and now it looks like Austin Powers is suffering the same fate.

There would be no reason for Warner to re-release Chuck on BD since its a TV Show. How many times has a TV show been re-released with more features thats not called Star Trek? Unless its the "complete series" type of dealio.

Lmao.

So that one reviewer who couldnt review his way out of a paper bag reviewed Joan of Arc.. he gave video 2.5

The Blu-ray's 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer (properly presented in the movie's 2.40:1 theatrical aspect ratio) looks pretty good, even impressive in close-up shots.

However, medium and wide shots exhibit distracting and often thick edge ringing artifacts. Grain has a noisy, electronic texture. The image rarely looks film-like.

The contrast range also looks a little flat. Individual colors in the frame may
otherwise seem accurate, but flesh tones are usually quite drab. The film has some nice photography by Besson's frequent collaborator Thierry Arbogast, but the Blu-ray is an over-processed mess.

We must have been watching two different movies. Grain was only apparent in a few scenes at the start but showed near the last 30 or so minutes of the film. The war scenes looked phenomenal, I agree that the contrast was slightly off but I don't think it merited a 2.5??? I dont understand their logic what so ever :(

Yes, Saw 1 is available for import. Its expensive though last time I checked. Itd be hard to NOT have better pq/aq... the uncut version though just has a few longer scenes/more gore during the fence guy's scene and amandas scene where she cuts the guy open for the key shows more of the organs and her rifling thru it.

I have the DVD unrated/extended cut...

Crappy ass audio track and no special features makes it not worth the import @_@

Hello,

I'm new to the Blu Ray world - just picked one up and I absolutely love it. But I am having some serious issues with this BD-Live stuff. My player is connected to the internet (because I downloaded the update) but any disc I click with BD-Live says it's not available.

I finally called Sony and they're telling me now that I need some kind of memory stick made by Sony for it download all the features.

Is this true or are they just trying to milk more money out of me?

(I have a BDP-BX1)
