I'm not too fond of it, either. But... I already own the original on DVD, so it it's nice to know a Bluray upgrade will contain both versions of the film.

Omg. The sweetest movie just came in today, I can't watch it until later.

Against the Dark - Starring STEVEN SEGAL.

"He lives by the sword. They will die by it" Sadly its only a DVD, but I don't care.

Steven Segal is a katana master who kills vampires that plague the world.

HOW FREAKING SWEET DOES THAT SOUND!?

ITS CHRISTMAS!!

True story....

Steve Segal walks out of a movie trailer and says to someone on set...

"I just read the greatest script I have ever read." - Steve Segal

"Really?... Who wrote it?" - person on set

Yeah, after the Ja Rule/Segal movie came out he really faded. He's had multiple straight to DVD films.

This one though isn't all that bad though.

I am so damn glad that they put both versions on the blu-ray. I was so worried that it was just going to have the shitty director's cut. Donnie Darko is one movie that I have no problem buying again, now in hi-def. It's easily a top three movie in my personal favorites.

Decent picture and audio, probably 4/5 as tho I haven't typed upa review yet.

Stick with your DVDs

Now there are plenty of forums discussions about which version is superior so I'll just skip it. It all boils down to how you like your films, spelled out for you or left up to individual interpretation (I prefer the latter).
Since the original's release in 2001, Fox has had ample time to give this movie the proper treatment it deserves. They failed big time, so I'm telling you now, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

This is coming from a huge fan of the film, the picture quality remains as poor as it was on both DVD editions. Now some may attribute that to the DP's choice of film stock, going with one that had silver in it. The result on a low budget is that it enhanced dark scenes (which the film had plenty of) at the cost of reduced detail. Say what you may but Fox has done nothing to improve this film visually. Purists may argue that this is the way the film is meant to be seen, with a blurry dream-like quality. To those people I say keep your DVDs, unless you're the type of person that must have both versions on one disc instead of two (in which case why are you reading this?).
To those who think you're getting the "definitive edition" of Donnie Darko you're dead wrong. The extras on the 2nd DVD is an exact copy of the 2nd Director's Cut DVDs (looks like they duct-tapped this "collector's edition together). Fox neglected to include the deleted scenes, music video, and everything else that was on the theatrical cut on DVD (save for the film itself and commentaries). And to the five people out there with D-Box enabled equipment this film supports that as it's sole hi-def exclusive.

In conclusion this blu-ray is nothing more than Fox trying to cash in on Darko fan boy-ism. With DVD quality visuals, slightly upgraded sound, and a third of the extras, I can't recommend this disc when you can get both DVDs cheaper, and get more than you would here. Chances are Fox will double dip this one down the road. Need more proof? They're releasing S. Darko, a direct to video sequel, in the coming months (cash-in).
Hopefully Fox will learn that they can't slap a dvd copy of a film on blu-ray with no substantial improvements and expect people to buy it. They could take a page from Warner Brothers who takes films like The Road Warrior, Dirty Harry, and The Shawshank Redemption and gives them quality transfers and ALL the previous bonus features (if not more).

FINAL COMMENTS: GREAT FILM, BAD DISC :-#

So I got the BDs of Friday the 13th Part II and III from the UK. They are in fat cases and have an annoying "FOR USE ONLY IN BLU-RAY DISC PLAYERS". Both films have TrueHD and both on BD50 discs.

Anyway, what everyone wants to know. Do the extras work? Yes. I went through each extra feature (including Trailers) on my Sony S550 playing on my Toshiba Regza and every single feature works fine.

Feel free to ask any questions. I'll be watching both tomorrow.

I liked S3 of Dexter. Normally I'm not a Jimmy Smits fan but he did good at that role. I think that season was two things: a somewhat unnecessary side adventure for Dexter, but it caused him to get sloppy and there's some stuff clearly setting up future seasons, mainly the blood on Rita's dress and Deb getting closer to finding out Dex was the Ice Truck Killer's brother.

The BD looks just fine to me. "DVD Quality Visuals"? Maybe if your TV is 20 inches, but I can see a major difference between the BD and the DVD.

Not only that, but what's it really missing -- the music video? The deleted scenes were all re-incorporated into the Director's Cut, were they not? All the commentaries from previous versions are here, and the 2nd disc, sure, it's what's already out there, but what are the other 2/3 of the "extras" that aren't here?

I literally just finished watching Season 3 of Dexter. S1 is still my favorite, but I learned to enjoy S3. At first the whole Jimmy Smits character thing threw me off, but I really love how he played his character the last few episodes. When he totally went off on Dexter on the roof of the office I was completely in awe of how much his character had truly changed. Miguel was no good guy. Dexter put it great when he said "I didn't create a monster. I was used by a monster" or something like that. Such a change in character of Miguel. He got it good! Although I was kind of sad for him and his surviving brother when Dexter had him in the interrogation office.

Interesting ending with the blood and Deb investigating their father more. Like Dexter said, it's the butterfly effect, and it looks like he may have caused a chain reaction that will set him against Deb next season. I can't wait for Season 4!!!

Anyone see reviews/seen Midnight Meat Train? Almost blind bought but the $30 price tag scared me off.

Same here, most of the reviews I've seen seem to keep saying the same thing about it, but it's hard to base reviews off of places like DVD talk and highdef digest for these sorta movies. But.. it's Vinnie Jones in a Ryuhei Kitamura movie.. c'mon! So I may end up blind purchasing it anyhow

Guess I can't post links.. ah well, twitchfilm and bloody-disgusting have good reviews of the film, and I trust their opinion on the genre. Twitch especially hasn't let me down so far.

as for the blu-ray, i guess the picture's not so great (heavily stylized look so it's not meant to) while the audio is pretty awesome. Here's a quote from the dvdtalk review of it.

"This disc's DTS-HD Master Audio track -- lossless, 24-bit, and packing eight discrete channels -- sounds pretty much perfect. The aggressive sound design attacks from every direction, especially as Mahogany skulks around for his prey. The clatter of the train on its tracks and screeching brakes help set a strong sense of atmosphere, bolstered by some immersive use of the surround channels and a wall-rattling low-end. The Midnight Meat Train does a better job than most in reinforcing its score in the rear speakers, and the ominous music can be pounding and resonant down in the lower frequencies."

I think I just convinced my own damn self to blind purchase this, hell.. been wanting to see it since Lionsgate fucked up the theatrical release.

Deadpool
02-19-2009, 06:02 PM
I folded and bought Midnight Meat Train last night. It was a good movie to start and then just lept into the absurd. Not that it lessened my view of the movie but it definitely didn't go where i wanted it to(i was hoping for a more realistic take then the novella). As for everyone praising Vinnie Jones... um okay? He was adequate but nothing memorable. Video quality was constant if not great and i'd have to disagree about the sound. It was dialog heavy and whenever there was anything going on in the subway i had to turn it up to hear the environment better.

I'm not dissatisfied but i should have waited for a price drop.

KindredWarr
02-19-2009, 07:01 PM
Does Vinnie Jones need to be anything more then adequate? Seriously what are you expecting out of him? He's not a great actor by far, but he's always fun and likable; at least in all the roles I've seen him in, mainly cause he's a bit over the top.

Where did you pick up MMT? I can't decide if I should just order it from amazon and save my self 5 bucks and wait for it to arrive (yay amazon prime) or just pick it up in store.

edit:
Well, picked it up not too long ago at Best Buy for 24.99, it's not even the sale price for the week, it was the actual sticker price.. surprised the hell out of me, most Blu-Rays at BB tend to be a bit over-priced even during the week of release.

Saw Quarantine tonight and it's definitely a rental. It was everything I expected it to be. Nothing more. Nothing less. The ending was so predictable. When I saw the trailer with the woman reporter getting dragged away with the night vision on I knew she was going to be the last survivor and that was going to be the last shot of the movie. So predictable. It was obvious that no one was going to survive.

On another note, I didn't get a good glimpse of the articles in that last room. So was it a cult that spread the rabies-like disease or what?

Also, I don't think this is a spoiler (obviously not everyone was going to make it out alive), but if you saw one person with the infection bit someone and then another person with the infection bite someone, why the fuck would you approach someone who looks like they are ill? More importantly, why the fuck would you lean close to them when you repeatedly saw people get their necks bitten? Idiots with no common sense. I mean, I don't expect everyone in a movie to be smart, but the almost complete lack of common sense is so typical in these movies.

Forget everything you've seen and go track down the original [REC]. So much better and the ending was amazing before the US trailers/posters/everything spoilered the hell out of it.

I'm so glad I watched it before the US remake's trailers started to play.

Here's what happened at the end of [REC]

After finding the key, 聲gela and Pablo appear to be the only human survivors, everyone else being dead or infected. Rather than making their way to the workshop, they are forced upstairs to the penthouse by the remaining infected. They then search the penthouse, and discover that its former owner was an agent of the Vatican who was charged with researching and isolating a suspected virus believed to be the biological cause of demonic possession, which was later confirmed to exist in a young girl who was supposedly possessed. The agent kidnapped and brought the girl to the penthouse to conduct his research and to possibly cure her; unfortunately, during the work the virus managed to mutate and become contagious. A door to the attic opens, and Pablo uses his camera to look inside. Something jumps at the camera and breaks its light. Pablo turns on the night vision to see in the dark and discovers the sealed door referenced earlier by the agent on an audio tape. The agent abandoned his efforts to cure the girl after failing to engineer a vaccine and sealed her in the room before leaving the city. The girl, now a ghoulishly emaciated figure, begins searching the kitchen area, unaware of 聲gela and Pablo's presence. Pablo tries to escape, but trips and is viciously attacked by the girl, making Pablo drop the camera. 聲gela picks it up and runs, only to trip and drop the camera as well. She searches for it but is unable to find it. The camera continues to record as the screams of the infected girl are heard and 聲gela is dragged into the darkness, screaming.

Thanks for the explanation. That was better than whatever BS they were trying to explain in the US remake. I knew this was a remake, but I heard that it was supposed to be a shot-for-shot remake so I hoped it would retain whatever made the original version good. Apparently not.

In the original, did the CDC also know what the apparent infection was? In this one it seemed like they knew at least something about it.

It's been awhile since I watched it but

It was only one health inspector in [REC]. He knew about the virus but I don't think he comprehended the scale or what exactly he was dealing with.

------------------

"A health inspector wearing a hazmat suit arrives and attempts to treat the injured, who become fiercely violent despite their critical injuries. The health inspector explains that the time the disease takes to cause sickness depends on blood type. The health inspector also reveals that, sometime during the previous day, a dog with the illness was taken to the veterinarian; the dog became violent and attacked and killed other pets at the clinic. The dog was euthanized, and was traced back to the apartment building. Jennifer, the girl who owned the dog, then suddenly attacks her mother. The inspector tells the distraught residents that this unknown but virulent disease is infecting people, causing them to turn into bloodthirsty savages."

T2 Double & Triple dip coming soon:
The unstoppable 'T2' is coming back to high-def, with Lionsgate unveiling two new editions of the sci-fi classic for Blu-ray release in mid-May.
Released in late 2006 on Blu-ray in a relatively bare-bones edition, as well as numerous prior DVD and video incarnations, Lionsgate will repackage the James Cameron epic yet again on May 12.

Featuring over six hours of bonus features is the two-disc 'Terminator 2: Skynet Edition (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/terminator2_skynet.html),' which will arrive concurrently with the 'Limited Edition Terminator 2 Complete Collector's Set (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2153/terminator2_lecollectorsset.html),' a seven-disc set which will bundle the Blu-ray 'Skynet Edition' with the previous 'Ultimate Edition' and 'Extreme Edition' DVD versions.

No surprise with T4 coming out this summer.

I paid $11 or so for the existing one, so a double-dip at that price isn't terrible. I can only wonder how much the ridiculous version will cost, probably $70 or $80, with the previous DVD editions bundled in there.

Here's another announcement I wasn't expecting so soon:

Let The Right One In is already set for release. Didn't think this would even come to America, probably only did since a shitty Americanized remake is planned and they want to expose us to the original, a la The Ring and Ringu.

http://www.amazon.com/Let-Right-Blu-ray-Lina-Leandersson/dp/B001MYIXAW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1234490767&sr=8-3

Over $25, so no need for free shipping filler!
I was afraid that they would withhold the release here in the US until after the remake comes out, which is what they did with [REC]. However, it will be a while before the remake comes out, so I guess they just said screw it.
The producers of the remake will have a very hard time duplicating what makes "LTROI" special. It's really a simple premise, and it's not so much the story that's so great, it's the execution (pun intended).;)

That movie is sooooo hilarious. Seriously. The unrated version doesn't add much though, its only 3 minutes longer. The blu-ray has the same features (at least according to the release anyways).

My favorite line from Role Models (probably a bit of paraphrasing):

Paul Rudd's character talking about whatisname McLovin's character:

After Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Role Models I'd say expectations are pretty high for I Love You, Man.

Yeah I read that after I posted it. Also when I posted it I did not know it was an import. I have been holding off on buying NY and LA till they come out on BD but I'm starting to think I might as well just get them on DVD.

And Escape from L.A. was terrible!

This is Escape from NY not LA and I thought LA was not bad I really liked the ending to it however I did think NY was better.

T2 Double & Triple dip coming soon:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Disc_Announcements/High-Def_Box_Sets/Lionsgate/Lionsgate_to_Launch_Skynet_Edition_of_T2_this_May/2517

This is why I have held off on a BD copy of The Terminator and T2. I read that the PQ and extras were not all that great and I already have them on DVD. So I thought why buy again when chances are they are going to come out with a better one. I'm a big Terminator fan buy for 174.99 for the Limited Edition Terminator 2 Complete Collector's Set I'm not sure if it will be worth it. From what was posted on highdefdigest.com all it comes with that is known for know is the Skynet Edition on BD and the Ultimate Edition and Extreme Edition on dvd. Now sure if they will all be BD or if the Skynet Edition is the only BD. Not really sure if I would want to pay that much for the set.

Hell after looking at amazon I know it wont be worth it if they are just the DVDs. 5 bucks for the Extreme Edition new and at most 25 bucks for the Ultimate Edition if one was to buy it from an Amazon seller. So 30 for the Skynet Edition, 5 for the Extreme Edition, and 25 for the Ultimate Edition is only 60 bucks. Hell even if one was to buy the Ultimate Edition for the highest price, 65 bucks, that is still only 100 bucks and your saving then 75 - 115 bucks.

Well hell I'm looking this up as I'm typing and finding more out about it. The one that is 175 is going to come in this

http://media.bluray.ign.com/media/143/14323995/img_6480327.html

http://media.bluray.ign.com/media/143/14323995/img_6480325.html

Skynet Edition cover will look like this

http://media.bluray.ign.com/media/143/14323995/img_6480319.html

Smaller picks

http://media.bluray.ign.com/media/143/14323995/imgs_1.html

Sorry about them being so large but IGN posted them that size however the like above is to smaller ones and you can find some that are a better size here in the 4th post down. (http://forums.highdefdigest.com/blu-ray-software-general-discussion/79801-terminator-2-sky-net-edition.html)

I think I will end up buying the 175 version if the case for it looks as good as the pick. I wonder if it is a 1:1 and what it will be made out of. Will be more then worth it as long as it is made well.

Hell now that I think about it I might end up buying both and just keep the 175 version in the box and not even open it. Mostly due to the fact that it will be used to store the discs and I would rather have them in a normal case.

See Coupons at bottom of post. All titles are 1080p unless otherwise mentioned. I did make mention of 1080p titles if the cover art was wrong. www.Amazon.Ca

I have the HD DVD version of Terminator 2 (Stellbook) and I'm keeping it. It already has DTS MA and I don't care about the special features.

I'm going to jump on it seeing how I only have the Extreme Edition DVD. I thinking of buying the 175 edition and just keeping it boxed but I'm not sure. It all depends on the quality of the endoskull case. If it is cheap I will chances are pass but if it is a good quality then both are mine. I'm still thinking about picking up the ultimate edition also.

So I ordered Blade Runner from Amazon not too long ago and it shipped to my house. So I popped it in my PS3 and noticed that the picture quality sucked. There were bright lines on the top of the screen and another at the bottom. No way I said, I read all the reviews and they all said the picture was crisp. My version looked like I was watching a DVD or something. So I pop in the 3rd disk which has the theaterical, international, and directors cut and to my surprise the picture was stunning. So anyone else that has Blade Runner blu ray, can you tell me if you have the same problem or did I get shafted?

I have wanted one for a long time and they are going for 700+ on ebay at times 500. once I find out the quality I will preorder one and just buy the BD DVD to keep this one in the box.

HDD reviewer gave the video quality 3 outta 5 stars but said this:

Warner presents 'Outbreak' on a BD-25 single-layer disc in 1080p/VC-1 video (1.78:1). It's clear that this is not a catalog title of high importance to the studio, for not only is this a bare-bones disc, but the source doesn't appear to have been all that cleaned up since the last time the flick hit standard DVD.
This is a decent transfer. Positives are nice black levels, a generally clean print with only a few blemishes and appropriate film grain, and contrast that is nicely balanced. The image overall has a a realistic look, though it's not particularly detailed. There's flat and slightly soft look throughout, and shadow delineation borders on the poor -- darkest scenes are noticeably fuzzy and lacking in any visible fine texture. Colors are fine, with decent saturation though nothing really eye-popping. The encode is solid, with no obvious compression artifacts and only slight edge enhancement. This is a serviceable catalog release from Warner.

Sounds more like a 4/5 to me, as the majority of the movie (except for the short C130 cargo area scene) is pretty well lit, and the shadow delineation would be negligible. Maybe his standards are higher for a bargain title than mine, IDK.

And ive never seen pitch black/chronicles. ANy good?

I loved both of them with Chronicles the Director's Cut being just a bit better than Pitch Black, but i am in the minority with that opinion.

Chronicles feels kinda like Conan in space.
While Pitch Black feels much more like a horror/creature feature film.

I'm thinking about just saying to hell with it and order Batman and Batman Returns from UK, no way its gonna cost as much as the $90 they want for the anthology and really who's gonna want Batman Forver and Batman & Robin anyway...

I think I will just wait for a sale on the Anthology. Honestly, I never disliked Batman Forever that much. It's not nearly as good as the first two movies, but it does have its moment, and I'm a fan of Val Kilmer. And Batman and Robin? Hell, it's just funny to watch that thing.

I agree on Batman and Robin being hysterical to watch, it's one of favorites because it's so absurd and the more you watch it, the more your mind is blown at what is actually going on. I'll definitely get that Batman Anthology eventually but not unless it's at least 30 dollars less because that's a lot of money to blow. It's not really much of a priority, because to me, the two "good" movies in the set, the Burton flicks, are still good but pretty dated.

As bad an actor as Arnold is, that role as Mr. Freeze was actually below him, if that's possible. When he delivers the "take two of these" line, that might be the most douche-chill inducing moment in cinema history.

I agree, there's no way I'm sinking that much money into a set that is half Schumacher. I'll wait for the eventual individual release on Batman and Returns.

The annoying part is that the movies were slotted for individual release a few months back until some douche at WB decided to see how many people would pay for the whole set. Not me.

You could buy the set and sell the ones you for sure don't want to help negate some of the high cost...

Do you know if they're each individually shrinkwrapped? You're assuming, though, that someone actually wants the Schumacher movies.;)

Batman comes in thin packs.. ugh

crunchb3rry
03-11-2009, 01:05 AM
Sometimes thin packs make for better packaging though. I kinda like the Matrix collection in thin packs. But the flipside also applies, I got the Bond sets on DVD and the thin packs combined with the horrendous cover art makes it feel like a cheap set considering you paid out the nose for it. Batman should not be in thin packs though. At the end of the day those are separate movies with no continuity and should be in the original standard cases.

SOmeone would, trust me. People sell digital copies for five - 10 bucks on ebay, so the movies themselves would net 15-20 odds are.

By the way, if phantomfriar reads this, send me a PM. i have a question.

Gotta say this was a pretty frackin' spectacular week. I Blu binged a bit and between my gf and I we're ending up with:
Batman Anthology
Brokeback Mountain
Let the Right One In
Pinocchio
Rachel Getting Married
Role Models
Transporter 3

I'm hoping the Batman Anthology set price stays at 88.89 at Deep Discount in time for their 20% off sale. I could do 71 bucks for the set and not feel bad about it. It'd be nice if it dropped somewhere else before that but 90 dollars for the 4 movies is just not a good buy IMO.

Then again, the Matrix collection hasn't dropped at all, and that is a set I want way more than this Batman one.

Believe it or not, the ones without a disc (The code) still go for a few bucks, the ones with the disc go for a bit more.

If you had some blank blu-ray cases (you can get them hella cheap from a website or two), put the batmans you dont want in those and say it doesnt have artwork but comes with a case and youd get a tons more for the batmans lol.

The Robe

It's guaranteed that they will have an individual release eventually. I bought the whole set for 84.99 plus tax and I pretty much know I'll only watch Batman and Batman Returns, so I pretty much just spent 50 dollars each for two blu rays. If I'm blitzed enough, maybe I'll watch Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.

Inconceivable! Nobody has mentioned that The Princess Bride is released on Blu-Ray TODAY, March 17.
Some folks at the blu-ray.com forum have found it at Wal-mart for $20, although the website says $23, so YMMV of course.
Amazon also has it for $23

Edit: I bought it this morning for $19.96 at Wal-Mart. Also, this is 2 discs. They pack in a DVD copy of the film.
