As if anyone didn't already know, Sin City looks amazing on Blu-Ray.
I watched the Re-Cut version but I didn't really see anything that was added, even though there was supposed to be an extra 20? minutes of footage.

My Ben Button from Amazon didn't go out today. I've never had a dvd/blu-ray not ship the day before release before...

It's too bad Criterion didn't use the same packaging for Ben Button as they did with some of their other Blu-Ray's, like the nice 'Digipak'-inspired packaging for Chungking Express. Instead, Ben Button is just in a cardboard sleeve, many of which appeared quite beat up at my local Best Buy. I leafed though about 20 copies before I found one in pristine condition.

No. We like to keep reminding ourselves that Scorch's Negativity is now out. ;)
The TMNT pack is up on Amazon.
Its too bad we still are not getting any real extras on these. I know that there are deleted scenes from the first one. Plus I do remember hearing rumors that there is supposed to be a more violent cut of the second one with them using their weapons.
On that note.... Warner is releasing Grumpy Old Men on Blu on 7/7/09. Wish they'd would have included the extras they hinted at many eons ago for the SE DVD that was mentioned during those infamous Home Theater Forum chat sessions. But oh well... it is what it is. At least the film is in its intended Widescreen format which means I can finally retire my Laserdisc copy.

Looks like the decision to delay Monsters Inc came late as the pamphlet still says "More Titles Available with Blu-ray Digital Copy" with Monsters Inc pictures
Not only that they have a "Now Available on Blu-ray" for Monsters Inc. trailer
Case lists 5.1 DTS MA. On screen Audio menu lists 5.1 DTS MA. My S550 displays 3/2.1 as well. Now, I only have a 5.1 setup so it may be downmixing. Tested Wall-E, another 6.1 title, and shows the same thing. Wonder why Disney screwed up on 5/6 typo again?
Also included is a Digital copy, free ticket to see Up! and a slip cover.

Samsung P1600. I originally wanted to get the 2550 model but I couldn't find it anywhere locally, the only other option was the 3600 model which was only $20 less than a PS3 and didn't really seem justified to me. Really the only difference was the inclusion of the USB WiFi adapter, 1GB of memory on-board and the analog 7.1 out.

Iffy overall, but very good PQ/AQ compared to the DVDs. Trek 2 has 10/10's across the board with a full new remastering, but the rest are getting just "okay" reviews overall.
According to the Digital Bits rumor mill there will be a TNG movie collection box by the end of the year, so I don't know if a set with all 10 will be around until sometime in 2010 if that happens.

My review copy of the Collection just came in and I've flipped through all 6 discs.
Basically, this is one of those tough calls that depends on how much you analyze the transfers. For me, for how much I love these old movies, it's a no-brainer -- they look so much better than the DVDs, even with whatever processing they used, that the upgrade is appreciable. They didn't restore all of them on the level of something like BLADE RUNNER, and yes they used a bit of noise reduction to gloss over the image, but unless you are watching on a 100 foot screen I think most fans would appreciate the HD quality of the films.
If you're a casual fan, I could see waiting for a price reduction if nothing else. And yeah, we all know how much Paramount loves to recycle, repackage, re-supplement (is that a word? lol) and on and on. That said I don't think there's going to be a Director's Cut of ST-TMP in the near future -- this is going to be it for now.
Overall I don't think Amazon's $79 price for the 6 movies on BD is outrageous. If you're a fan, go for it. If you are somewhat interested, maybe wait for another price reduction.
I was pretty disappointed in Ben Button, thank goodness for netflix! If I had seen this in the theater, I'd have fallen asleep well before it ended, and shelling out $25 for the BR? Ouch. It was well acted and well-shot, but the story is clumsy and plodding (yeah take that F. Scott Fitzgerald! hehe, J/K I blame the screenplay/script) and the film's overall pacing was equally slow. You can see a lot of things coming a mile away, but unfortunately Fincher decided to go literal with whole age thing and uses walker to get there. At least Cate Blanchett looked fantastic and in dancer's shape (where she was age-appropriate of course).
BR-wise, the PQ looked fine to me, but I felt the soundtrack was too muted, even for a primarily vocal track. Everyone talks in fake Louisiana drawls, and they do a lot of whispering and mumbling which made it even worse.

You are right on how Paramount keep rehashing the same titles over and over. Look at how many times they have rehased "Grease" alone just on DVD. I wouldn't be shocked when the next film in this ST reboot is (or even the third one) is when we might see the next rehash of the original ST films on Blu this time with the extended cuts for 2/6 plus some kind of either new effects upscaled to HD or redone for HD edition of the TMP: Directors Cut.
Which means for now I'll just hold on to my DVDs. Heck I didn't bother upgrading from my Laserdisc editions of 1-6 until the 2 disc DVDs came out so I can manage to wait a bit longer until Paramount gets it at least close to what I consider "good enough."

Eventually and on sale I'd like to pick up Terminator 2 (Skynet), Paycheck, 3 Days of the Condor and Valkyrie ($28 is just too much...)
Next week is pretty much the best catalog week ever with Children of Men, Cinderella Man, Seabiscuit, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Field of Dreams all must buys for me.
6/2 (Defiance, Glory, FFVII: AC, Air Force One) and 6/9 (International, Gran Torino, Predator 2) are looking solid as well.

It was well back in 2001/2002 or so. Mine is the thick double case edition with this cover:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51449rieLHL._SX280_SH35_.jpg
(Okay its the Region 2 cover pictured but its still the same except for the rating certification on the bottom)
At the time that edition was the only way to get the film with the anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1 transfer which was also Disney's first pure digital transfer. The single disc had a 4x3 letterbox edition on it. The difference in quality between the two was certainly worth the extra money to me back then. From the few screencaps I've seen the new Blu-Ray makes the back then amazing looking anamorphic edition look like VHS.
If anything the only thing missing extra wise of value on the new Blu-Ray is the isolated score track. I'm assuming the "Finding Nemo" promo stuff that was added on the re-released 2 disc SE isn't on the Blu-Ray but that is no loss to me there.

I figure this might be the best thread to ask.
What is the cheapest way to rent Blu Rays? Been using Netflix ever since Christmas when I got my PS3.
I'm going to imagine this might be the best way, sadly. It's only like $11 a month I'm paying.. but sometimes we only get a chance to watch 1-3 movies a month. Going to blockbuster would be just as expensive....I don't even know how much they cost their these days.
I have a few Redboxes available. Are the Redboxes with blu ray more available? I can search the website for locations..but it doesn't say it has Blu. I'm going to guess if you click on a location it would mention they had blu rays? :-k

I got a feeling we'll see better deals on 24 S7 the closer we get to S8. I can understand why Fox is releasing the season now but for me I won't be rewatching it until close to S8. So I'll just wait.

I too would love to know how common redboxes with Blu-Rays are because as far as I can tell, none of the redboxes in my area carry Blu-Rays.
I'm starting to use the service more often, but still am forced to go to Blockbuster when I want to rent Blu. :???:

Lot of people on DVD Talk saying they didn't get the ticket from Amazon.

Interesting idea what Fox did with the 24 release. Wasn't a huge fan of the season (beginning and end caps were okay, middle epi's were awesome) so I won't pick it up. Hopefully they re-release season 5 on blu-ray because that was hands down, the best season of 24 ever.

I just picked this up a few days ago. I love the p1600, the picture quality is amazing. I'm new to the blu-ray scene but so far I'm loving it and questioning myself why I watched dvd's so much when I have a 1080p hdtv.

VipFREAK
05-26-2009, 03:53 PM
I agree the PS3 is worthless after all, but selling your 60gb PS3? might be a bad idea. I've been trying to avoid it too. To remedy that I bought a wired 360 controller and cross battle adapter. xD
The Samsung BDP-1600 isn't too bad--amazon has it for $176 shipped w/4 BR discs (separate thread), but honestly, I think you should keep the PS3 as you already own the best BR player for the money, IMO. Any BR player that meets or exceeds the PS3 is going to cost at least $300 I believe...

It might've been an easier decision to switch during the last few months of 2008 as there were a number of low to mid-end BR players going for really cheap (in comparison to now anyway). I remember you could get a Sony S350 for like just under $200.

That Limited Edition Collectors Set is way too much. $124 more to add a box, a few lithographs, a book, and a few pins..... no thanks. That set should be at most $50-60 tops. Suddenly the $80 or so I spent on the Harry Potter HD-DVD boxset with all five films, several bonus discs, and other things looks far better now.

It depends on the studio and type of release. Major studios for live-action movies (especially foreign movies) will usually have a subtitle track, often both English and Japanese. Most anime releases (both DVD and BD) will not have a subtitle track (such as those released by Bandai Visual). Releases by Disney for DVD and Blu-ray have had subtitle tracks, so there's a good chance that when they begin their Ghibli releases (starting with Ponyo), there will be subtitles.
Also, the Code Geass series on DVD and BD by Bandai Visual does not have any subtitles, Japanese nor any other language.

Indeed some of those pics have the loss of detail and plastic look. When the film is set into motion on my HTC it becomes less apparent, to me anyways.
It's worth $12 (IMHO) if you don't have the DVD or haven't seen it and that's it. The movie is great, a far more interesting storyline than The Matrix and better acted (again IMHO).
However, if a better version is ever released I will certainly pick it up over this one.

I'm hoping Gladiator has all of the extras from the original 2-disc DVD and the 3-disc double dip.
Here's what Paramount announced for these new "Sapphire" series discs:
Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track for Braveheart and DTS-HD MA for Gladiator.
Gladiator will include the ability to tag elements while watching the main disc, which will then automatically queue up more information once the second supplemental disc is loaded into the player, while Braveheart's extras focus mostly on the history of the Scottish Rebellion with 3D models and interactive timelines.
Interesting, but still not sure $40 MSRP ($28 online) is appropriate for a catalog title.

I actually like Digibooks and I am a pretty picky completionist and quite particular on cases. I like the info in the books and it gives them an "epic" feel, this is IMO but it's how I feel.
As for the recycle cases, I don't care because I don't really care about it enough for it to bother me as it's not that different, if it does well for the environment then well, that's awesome.
For the snap cases though... I always hate those, the way Sony uses them in their releases usually bothers me because they never tend to close right.

I thought the reason for those snappers was that TW owned the company that made those cases.
When I still kept my DVD cases, I would just rip the covers off, and put it and the disc in a generic DVD/PS2 case.
I just picked up some movies recently that are still in those bullshit cases. :bomb:

Honestly, I didn't know what forum to post this under but, I figured CAG was my best bet to get help. I've never Imported any game or Movie before, so I'm not really savvy with any kind of region codes.
Here's my situation and yes I realize I probably seem crazy
I'm a HUGE fan of the movie Tropic Thunder, it's probably my favorite movie of the last couple years. I was ultra giddy when the Blu-ray came out only to realize that it does not include the Theatrical Cut of the film, only Directors Cut. While I still enjoy the Directors cut, I really want to enjoy the same cut I saw in theaters in HD on my TV.
I've found that other countries have gotten the Theatrical Cut on Blu Ray, so I'm looking to import it. Based on what I've found, the UK version is region locked, however from what I can tell, the Chinese version is not. From what I can tell from the Play-Asia site, if I import it, it'll be in English and it even seems to come with a digital copy. I was wondering if you guys could help me out and anyone who is familiar with importing let me know if ordering this Blu Ray will just be a waste of $40.
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bx-49-en-70-3bgb.html
That's the Chinese Version which seems like it will play in my PS3. Thanks for the help guys and sorry if this is the wrong board.

From a little research, it appears that the UK release is region free; however, it appears to be the Director's Cut.
The Hong Kong release is Region A and will play in your PS3, but I could not find confirmation if it's the theatrical cut, sorry.
But every other country seems to have the Director's Cut, so I don't think I would take the chance without definite confirmation from someone who has it.

Use this for determining what is Region "Free" and what is not.

And according to the site neither Region B versions (UK) are region locked.

I've got a similar problem. Transporter 2 was released in Japan and Europe with an "uncut" version. I recently tried to buy a copy on Ebay, but got outbid in the final 5 seconds so I couldn't even try another bid. And I've been unable to determine a shop where I can buy the uncut version. The easiest way I've found to tell the difference, is the uncut copies have Frank between the woman's legs, instead of Frank as the main image. It then mentions uncut on the front as well.
Anyone seen where I might buy a copy? I can play it on my computers if it won't play on the PS3.

I usually use AVSforums. I think there's a topic about it there in the Blu-Ray Software section. I'll update this post with the thread if I find it, and yes, different regions come with better transfers all the time.
