Looks like Universal has dropped all extras from this release. Only thing present is U-Control, Commentary and My Scenes. I'll pop my copy in later to see if the "missing" features are present during U-Control...but it would suck to lose the Deleted scenes and Alternate ending.
Originally it was announced with (along with the DVD)
Extras will include: "Audio Commentary with writer/director Michael McCullers and actors Tina Fey and Amy Poehler,"
"From Conception to Delivery: The Making of Baby Mama," a "Saturday Night Live: Legacy of Laughter" featurette, "Deleted Scenes," and an "Alternate Ending."

So many movies coming out from now until the end of the year. Right now my most anticipated is Wall E since I haven't seen it and I know how good Pixar looks on the Blu combined with the praise the movie itself got.

Postal seems to be online only for now. I haven't seen it anywhere. I've been told by a few different retail stores that they'll get it in on September 9th.
I only picked up Nightmare Before Christmas and What Happens In Vegas this week, bringing my count up to a measly 51. I also picked up Sum of All Fears this past week for $12 used.Like I've said before, having a mom and pop shop that price all new BR movies at $19.99 doesn't help the situation.. there's a lot of impulse buys. I still have quite a few sealed BR movies (Cruel Intentions, Dark City, Narnia, Natural Born Killers, Jumper, Disturbia)
Next week.. TRANSFORMERS!

Don't feel too bad. No one can beat you in the kitchen.
So there's a 2 disc and a 3 disc Wall-E?
Edit: Ok, so apparently the DVD is 3 disc and the BR is 2 disc? Amazon is confusing me because I think they are mixing the two up in their pre-order descriptions.
The 2 disc is $24.95 and the 3 disc is $27.95 right now. I was tempted to order the $24.95 one, but the $27.95 one falls more in line with their new BR release prices.

IIRC there is are four total versions of Wall-E coming out, 2 BDs and 2 DVDs.
From The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa159.html#hellart)
There will be a single-disc DVD (SRP $29.99), a 3-Disc Special Edition DVD (SRP $39.99), a 2-Disc Blu-ray edition (SRP $35.99) and a 3-Disc Blu-ray Edition (SRP $40.99). The single-disc DVD will include the Presto animated short, the all new Burn-E animated short, audio commentary with director Andrew Stanton, deleted scenes, the Animation Sound Design: Building Worlds from the Sound Up featurette with Ben Burtt and the Sneak Peek: WALL-E's Tour of the Universe featurette. To this, the 3-Disc Special Edition DVD will add additional deleted scenes, 3 featurettes (The Pixar Story by Leslie Iwerks, BnL Shorts and Wall-E's Treasures and Trinkets), the Lots of Bots storybook, additional "making of" featurettes, Bot Files and a Disney File (Digital Copy) version of the film. The 2-Disc Blu-ray edition will include all of the above (minus the Digital Copy) and will add a Geek Track viewing option, the Cine-Explore with Andrew Stanton feature, PiP enhancement of Burn-E with storyboards, and an Axiom Arcade suite of "retro style videogames with a twist." The 3-Disc Blu-ray will have all that and also include a Disney File (Digital Copy) version of the film

Haven't seen Wall-E yet but I'm interested in it if the price is right (I'm such a cheap bastid!)

Just got the official press release from Disney about the Platinum BD releases...
Pinocchio, the beloved story of a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, comes to Platinum Edition DVD and Disney Blu-ray in spring 2009. Disney's second full-length animated movie, Pinocchio won two Oscars®, one for Best Score and another for the unforgettable song "When You Wish upon a Star.” It returns for the first time since 2002.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, honored with a special Academy Award® for screen innovation this movie has been unavailable since 2001. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition will be released in the fall of 2009.
Walt Disney’s experimental masterpiece Fantasia won two honorary Oscars for its innovative use of animation and music. Most recently released in 2000, the restored and remastered Fantasia Platinum Edition will be available in 2010. Alongside this release, a newly restored and remastered Fantasia 2000 Platinum Edition, will be available. Fantasia 2000 begins where its predecessor, Fantasia, left off, with seven completely new segments and the return of the popular “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, featuring breathtaking images coupled with classical music favorites.
In conjunction with these releases, Destino, the unfinished animated feature film created by Walt Disney and famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali will release. Begun in 1946, it was rediscovered in 2003 and completed by Walt’s nephew, Roy E. Disney. The collaboration between these two legendary artists will be available to own for the first time along with an all-new feature-length documentary that examines the surprising partnership between Dali and Disney.
Beauty and the Beast, the only animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Picture, earned a breathtaking six Academy Award® nominations and won two Oscars®. Beauty in the Beast Platinum Edition will be available in fall 2010.

Indeed. I understand it would be quite difficult for them to jam the entire Death and Return story into one movie, but they didn't even try. The most disappointing thing about it was the fight with Doomsday. It was over before it started. The only thing redeeming about the whole purchase was the featurette about the development of the Death of Superman. That was good. The movie was awful.

Its not a matter of whether Microsoft wants 360 Blu Ray, its whether Sony would want them to have it. With the best selling Blu Ray player (and worst selling console oddly enough) being the PS3 they wouldn't want to shoot themselves in the foot on letting Microsoft put Blu Ray in the 360, they'd simply lose too many PS3 sales.
bigdaddybruce44
08-31-2008, 01:08 PM
I think he was talking about the next Xbox console, not a 360 with a Blu-ray drive. Also, Sony isn't the only ones with a voice in Blu-ray.

Why would you be selling your PS3 anyways? It is one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players out there. Sure, there are cheaper ones, but they exclude many things that would not make it worth the purchase (no ethernet, no upgrade). I think Samsung or some other company is releasing a fairly comparable BD Player, but I remember seeing that it was roughly the same price as a PS3.
Ah, you choice though. I'm with the others in saying that you shouldn't hold your breath for a Blu-Ray Xbox 360. If you are talking about the "next" Xbox, then I wouldn't know. My guess is that they might include it, but you are going to wait another 3-5 years until it comes out (my guess obviously).

Yeah, still, don't hold you're breath. I think we are more likely to see a DVD/Download hybrid system then Microsoft putting a Blu-ray player in. But who knows.

If it were me, I would definitely start looking for a standalone player. That $330 combo player Gizmo was pimping would be a good pick.

It isn't just Sony's decision and I imagine that everybody else in the Blu-Ray Association (including studios) would be beyond pissed if they turned away a system that could possibly help them get Blu-Ray into another 19 million homes (that is if the next Xbox does as good as the 360)

Problem with that is Sony isn't Bluray. BDA is in place to 'prevent' any of that. It's more MS's decision than it would be Sony's and yes, Sony does controls more of the Bluray market than anyone else. I also highly doubt you'ld see any BD version of the 360 anytime soon.

Next xbox might be 3 years out from now. You can pick up an Insignia player for $250 and if you wait till Xmas, you might find a black friday blu-ray player for $200 or less. But why are you selling your ps3?
Edit- I believe there is a $50 gift card with the insignia and there's a $100 coupon (good for blurays) in the box. That's a pretty good deal- $200 for a player and you get to pick about 3 or so blu-rays for free.

When you buy our Insignia® NS-BRDVD Blu-ray Disc player, you'll receive this special book of valuable coupons inside the box. Redeem the coupons at your local Best Buy store for $100 in instant savings on a great collection of Blu-ray Disc movies from Disney, Touchstone and Miramax.

don't really notice much difference between the two except that the hybrid player loads a little faster (esp HD-DVDs vs the toshiba a-35)

That's some misprint. SCC is a much bigger seller and a better candidate for lossless.
Too bad they can't give every title TrueHD.
Or maybe they had a deadline for when they were going to fix up their act so SCC and Speed Racer must have missed the deadline by a couple of weeks.

for some reason on the ps3 47 was the volume i always kept it at, but for the hybrid player 39 is about the sameWhen you're playing a BD disc, hit "options" on the remote (I think). There's actually a selection where you can adjust PS3's internal volume, between -3 to +3 or something. I read somewhere that basically each increment of 1 equals to about +/- 4db.

Digital distribution is a very long ways off for one giant reason. Broadband market penetration in the U.S. is nowhere near where it needs to be to make it an alternative that kills physical media.

Indeed. I also think there are a lot of people out there who still simply prefer having a physical copy of something. I guess, it has a lot to do with being set in my ways, but I just like having a disc and a case. I'm sure that sentiment will fade in coming generations, but for now, there are still a lot of "older" folks who like physical media.

Or there are people like me that would still like the option of trading or even reselling movies they don't like. I will not go Digital Distribution until i am forced, and i can't see that happening for 20 years.

Sure, there are movies I want to have a physical copy of - Forgetting Sarah Marshall for example. But others, like Leatherheads, is simply a film I would watch once and that would be that. To have the ability to rent it in HD, all from my living room, for a small fee, is worth it. Not everyone has $20-$40 to spend on Blu-ray discs and not everyone wants to get in there car, go to Blockbuster, hope the movie is in-stock, wait in line, drive home, and then play the movie. Why spend all that time when I can simply click "RENT", wait a few or two, and boom, I get to start watching.
Like I said, there are tons of movies I would want to own - but there are thousand I wouldn't. Its much easier to swallow a $3-$5 rental of a shitty VOD film in HD than $20-40 on a Blu-ray.

Hmmm, I understand what you're saying, but I was really talking more about when one has already decided to purchase a product. From that point on, a physical copy is still superior in my book, especially if they are going to cost about the same.

Well, to be fair, you can already do that with physical media via Netflix/Blockbuster Online. I'd much rather have the physical product instead of waiting 3-5 hours for it to download.
Only way I would get into digital distribution with movies is if there was a Steam-like service...also if I had a bigger hard drive (my 750GB drive is down to 100GBs left)

You absolutely can rent it from Netflix/BBO - problem is, it will take 2-3 days to arrive. At that time I may have things going on in my life or no interest in watching the film anymore. Ive sent back my fair share of films simply because I'm in no mood to watch them anymore. The whole point of VOD (for me at least) is to be able to watch it right then and there. If I have a hankering to watch Harold and Maude in HD, I simply click BUY, wait a few minutes, and then it starts right away. It's all about impulse buying without having to leave the couch. Of course my experience has been with Xbox 360 and AppleTV - all of which start either within a few seconds or minutes.
But I purchase more for BD/DVD then rent via VOD...but with Netflix streaming coming to 360, I may cut back on impulse buys for catalog titles when I can essentially rent them for free (aside for the $8.99 I already pay for Netflix). I know there in SD...but still would save me some money.
P.S. Welcome aboard ;)

Yes, it will when it comes out. As of right now its only SD quality, but it can be updated to HD at any time (at least the RoKu box can...it has an HDMI port and so do most 360's and I imagine they will pull from the same server).

Is anyone still getting 10% off HDM from Amazon?
I still seem to be, but it looks like I'm being cheated. I just checked my order for Forbidden Kingdom, which was originally $24.95, and there was a promotion applied that took $1.25 off. But 10% of $24.95 is $2.50.
I only thought to check this because I found The Incredible Hulk BD in my Gold Box today, but if you add it to the cart, there is no promotion applied aside from the Gold Box discount. So I'm thinking, what is the point of waiting for a disc to hit the Gold Box when you should probably be getting the same (or better) discount from the HDM 10% off.

I opted not to get that release because I'm not a fan of Smallville. One of the other reviewers from my site got it and its 7 episodes per disc...which means 3 discs house 7 episodes each. I don't know WTF Warner was thinking with that.
For comparison, both Terminator: Sarah Connor and Pushing Daisies have 3 episodes on each disc and both contain DD5.1 tracks as well. Warner is being very, very cheap with their releases.
To be honest with you, I think Warner is trying to make their TV on BD releases each 3 discs to use the same type of amray case to store them in. I believe Justice League is the same way and I imagine (sadly) Chuck and Supernatural will follow as well.

Oh and BTW...
Ok, Warner had lied.
Pushing Daisies Season One advertises TrueHD tracks on the back of the slip cover in fact only has standard Dolby Digital 5.1 ones. There is no way to select other audio tracks and someone over at AVS has scanned the disc and confirmed only DD5.1 is present. Warner has not only a misprint on their hands, but yet another title to not include TrueHD at all. I searched all over my set and could not find any other track but DD5.1....GRR.

Would expain all the ugly compression artifacts, if they're trying to cram 300 minutes on a disc.
I did notice about SCCC and Pushing Daisies only getting DD5.1 sound, which is why I'm not that keen on buying them on BR, since most of what I can see with upgraded video I could get away with via upscaled DVD, if I'm getting DD5.1 regardless of BR or DVD.

Gizmo, will you be getting Chuck early? I have it pre-ordered from Warner but if it turns out you're right about them cramming episodes onto fewer discs (although I can't possibly imagine how they'd do 3 discs for a season of a 1-hour show) I'd appreciate an early warning.

Reference quality disc for PQ, though story's a snoozer?
That seems to be the word around the water cooler. Blu-ray.com called it THE best looking disc of the year.
This direct digital approach has given Speed Racer a stunning visual sheen and a truly flawless picture. Colors practically leap off of the screen and the movie’s many small details are rendered with a crystal clear clarity that I’ve never seen equaled on home video. Black levels are deep and contrast is excellent. I can’t even begin to accurately convey how amazing Speed Racer looks on Blu-ray. This is THE definitive reference disc of the year and will be utilized the world over as a demo disc for Blu-ray for years to come.
- Blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=1052&show=review) Review
The Digital Bits seems to agree....
It's just damn near perfect, and I guarantee it's better than anything any of you saw in the theatres. Colors absolutely burst off the screen, contrast is outstanding and detail is spot-on. You're going to notice that some DNR was used here and there - you'll notice it on faces, in particular Mom and Pops Racer - but that's not something that was done for Blu-ray. I noticed it in that original screening. It's a stylistic choice on the part of the filmmakers. But trust me, the detail everywhere else is crisp and exactly as it should be. There is some very light digital compression artifacting here and there, but it's very well hidden by all the fast movement on screen. Trust me, I'm watching this in native 1080p on a 110" screen, and I really had to look for it. Speed Racer is right up there with the best Blu-ray video I've seen yet.
- The Digital Bits (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviewshd/speedandmore.html) Review
And to top it off, the AVSForum Official Review (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1066923) gave the video 100/100.
I have to say, I had very little interest in buying this but I might just now for the reference video to test when I go TV shopping soon.

Keep in mind TDB has been pimping Speed Racer for a loooooong time. I had no doubt they would say the BD is perfect. Is it? Dunno, my copy is in the mail somewhere. Personally I'd wait to read other reviews first because while the disc may look pretty, the film still sucks.

Reference quality disc for PQ, though story's a snoozer?
The picture is near perfect, but it is absolutely not 100% perfect. The backgrounds and colors are simply something out of this world. Extremely crisp and lively. Unfortunetly some of the close ups on the actors are a little soft in some scenes and exceptional in others. If i had to rank it i'd go with a 95%. It is definetly something everyone should witness at least once. My eyes almost hurt because all the colors just popped off the screen.
And yes, the story is fairly straight forward, but i didn't really expect too much from it anyways.

09-17-2008, 07:13 PM
Just FYI, after looking at a couple reviews, the close ups of the actors faces looking a little weird might not be the fault of the transfer, but the movie itself. Apparently they did some post work on the people that play the Speed Racer guys parents to make the actors look younger.

Lack of space.Hasn't the trend been to replace a dual-layer HD-DVD with 30GB of space with a single-layer BR with 25GB of space? Isn't it either that, or trying to get more stuff on a disc because of shortages with BR media?

I think the costs of a SL BD25 disk is cheaper and doesn't have as much bottlenecks in production as well as better yields compared to DL BD50 disks. I think what you see is the law of diminishing returns happening here. As well as why release everything on the 1st go when you can double dip the customers a year or 2 later with special edition versions of the same disk, and then they'll include the BD50 filled with extras. Just my guess

Some discs just come barebones from studios.

It's their fault.I'll believe the "just come barebones from studios" to a point. If they're migrating from a 30GB DL HD-DVD to a 50GB DL BD, then there should be 20GB left over, if they're not changing anything. Should be plenty of space to move everything over, even if they're changing something like U.Control to BD-Live.
Now, if they're moving 30GB of info to a 25GB SL BD, then they'll have to cut something back to save that 5GB of space.
That was the point I was trying to bring up. If they use the same codec from the HD-DVD version to the BR version, file-size shouldn't change much, if at all.

Realize that even on 25GB releases, they're not using all that space up.
I'm really surprised they put out Speed Racer on a 25GB disc.
Not that 25GB means they can't put a lossless track, it depends on the length of the movie.
SR is over 2 hours right? Ouch.
?? Why is all that I hear....I swore Blu-Ray were suppose to be better then HD-DVD (Media Size wise)...Why can they fit all the extras on HD-dvd but when it comes time to transfer them to Blu-Ray they drop the extras? They just do drop them.
Many early movies had nothing on the discs but the movie, and leaving lots of empty space.
Like another user mentioned, it just paves the way for special editions down the line.
I really don't care about extras at all, but dang, don't cut off my audio!
graf1k
09-19-2008, 11:01 PM
Yeah, I almost think sometimes a lot of these discs where the extras get dropped at the last second now is just the studio saying to themselves "Well, we've already got the extras content. We'll take them off the first release and a year from now we can release a special edition with all the extras back and lossless 7.1 audio".

HD DVD was 30GB...and BD is 25GB (or 50GB if they use the more expensive discs).
So they have to drop 5GB...which typically means Extras.
BUT, since Universal used DD+ on many titles, adding DTS MA to each BD means even MORE space is required since it takes up more room then a DD+ track. Thats why you see so many extras being dropped and/or being incorporated into U-Control.
In some cases (End of Days) its just mind blowing. It had a TrueHD track on HD DVD, and for BD, they used DTS MA...and still dropped all the features. Same with Dawn of the Dead.

Fox Introduces New $20 Retail Price Level for Blu-ray
Posted in Amazon, Studios on September 20th, 2008 by Dave
In a surprise move, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment appears to have introduced a new pricing level.
While back in March Fox introduced a $30 retail price for some of its less popular releases, the studio is now following Lionsgate with a budget level $20 retail pricing strategy for a subset of the studio's older releases.
Titles with the new $20 retail price tag according to Amazon include Commando, Predator, Kiss of the Dragon, Men of Honor, Pathfinder, Chain Reaction, Entrapment, The Hills Have Eyes 2: Unrated, The Sentinel and Courage Under Fire.
These titles now list for $14.95 at Amazon.

Yes and No. Studios change their minds all the time for various reasons (disc supply, timing etc.)...right now two studios are moving dates around so much that it may mean a few prominent titles may get moved to Q2/3 next year... As usual, I can't say which studios and/what titles, sorry.

Its a slip cover (like Oceans Trilogy, Matrix) that houses the 3 POTC movies. They are standard retail copies that may or may not come with their slipcovers.

I'm also pretty pissed to find out that the "From the director of 300!" is on the actual art and is not a sticker on the case.
But yay for Iron Man and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I bet FSM is gorgeous, what with it being Hawaii and all..

I really don't remember anyone referring to him as such. Still, he is full of very useful information. Considering that there is no concrete information about a potential BD release of Gladiator, anything anyone can share about it is nice.
Yeah, I am NOT an Insider. But I deal with the studios all the time and I am able to request certain movies before announcements are made...and sometimes they push back, and push back, and push back a title so much that you never know WHEN it will hit. Plus I do talk to several other reviewers from other websites so we tend to share information when we hear it. So please, take what I say with a big bowl a doubt because I myself never know whats going to hit until they announce it.
What I do know is a really cool Brave movie may be hitting the same day a Pick Flick one might.
And another studio...oh boy, they are changing dates almost every other day!

To be fair, Amazon has tons of place holders for shows, including Murphy Brown Season 1, Buffy Seasons One, X-files etc. No Guarantee those will ever come out.
As for DOTD...yeah, that stupid banner is on the fucking coverart! Lame as shit. And the boob censor was present in the DVD and HD DVD version as well.

Can't wait to get The Godfather Collection tomorrow from Amazon. I'm gonna make an admission here, but I've not seen any of the movies all the way through. Maybe a scene or two here and there, but certainly no more than 10 minutes total of the movie trilogy.

I could never get into them all that much but I do plan on getting the BD set. I would also like to see a starwars bd set of 4-6 the first 3 I would never watch or buy unless they came in the set and I was forced to get them. Indy would be nice but they would chances are pack all 4 of them in a box and I would be in the same boat with the 4th as episodes 1-3. All are nothing but trash.

Hey Gizmo, heard anything about this? (other than Zodiac obviously, which I believe you already confirmed by the insert of another title)
The great news, however, is that a TON of new catalog Blu-rays are expected to be released on 12/16, just before Christmas. Hot Rod, Old School and Into the Wild have already been announced for that date, and Tommy Boy, Coach Carter and Heartbreak Kid are expected that day as well. Better still, Event Horizon, The Truman Show, Ghost, Last Holiday and Days of Thunder are all expected to arrive in stores on 12/30.
More great Blu-ray titles are expected in January, including Dexter: The Complete First Season (for Showtime), the Braveheart: Special Collector's Edition, Election and Zodiac. Election has already been officially announced for release on 1/20, and we expect Braveheart that day as well.
As always, keep in mind that these titles and dates ARE unofficial and are subject to change until they're actually officially announced by the studios in press releases and retail solicitations.

Just got the Godfather set. I tried to watch it but just can't get into it much at all. I saw about the first half hour to 45 minutes of the first movie and just stopped watching. I think it is going to be one that I have to watch in parts. I have had that issue with other movies and liked them. I just can't watch all of it at one time. It however seems like a nice set I have not checked out the extras yet and the only thing I don't like is the sound. Some parts it is louder then others and I was playing with the valume for the tv a lot. However that is with tv speakers I currently don't have a good set up for 5.1. I may play it with the 5.1 I do have some time in the next week though.

Apparently the first batch of Iron Man BDs are all defective and have some kind of issue with various BD players and Onkyo and Denon receivers and thus has been recalled. Mine supposedly shipped from Tower.com already and they have already issued a complete refund. I'm hoping that it plays fine on a PS3 or that Paramount will do a disc replacement because that would mean free Iron Man for me. :D

I read it as if you have an older box set or if you get the new box set that is DVD and then upgraded to BD.
Now I'm wondering if BB will even have the BD of Iron Man and if they do if it will work correctly or if I will have to send in the disc.

Here is whats going on with Iron Man BD:
Disc One is being recalled from all Iron Man BD sets. Why? Apparently issues loading on certain players (Sony and Samsung). Paramount has already sent some reviewers new discs, and all current ones (in retailers hands) are being shipped back to Paramount and being replaced. The Bad SKU and Good SKU are posted a few up as well as in the OP. As I said before, my copy worked just fine in my LG 200s and PS3...so it may just be a small sampling of people having the issue.
So far, I have not heard of a single reviewer who could not get the title to play...so a huge recall like this threw me off. I've been discussing it with a few other reviewers since Saturday (Paramount started to ship out replacements to reviewers - Mine still has yet to come). Kudos to Paramount for doing this rather then dealing with the backlash later.
For you guys getting Iron Man in store (even though Paramount promises them to be the new copies...just in case)
Here's the UPC's:
Defective: UPC: 097361385747
New "Fixed": UPC: 097361385709
I'll stress, this is not a major thing - very minor. Paramount is going to eat 100k discs and since they have the special hard coating, can not be recycled. Paramount is really stepping up for such a minor, minor issue.
The BD is NOT being delayed a week. It may be tough to find Tuesday...but by Friday you should be fun. They are rushing new copies as ASAP.
