http://kotaku.com/5041923/new-ps2-models-hitting-us-stores

I saw one during my visit to Wal*Mart yesterday. This is the same PS2 that Japan got a year ago, as well as the PS2 to be bundled with Lego Batman (http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190766). Looks like the colors are the same, because the ones I saw yesterday were silver, and the picture shows a black one.

*hopes for holiday price drop*

I saw these at Target last week and didn't even realize these were the new models. Had they come out a few months ago, I would have bought one. Now, I can't really justify it when a 360 is going to be only $70 more.

That's where you're wrong. Look again.

Vageta, what does the scouter say about his series level?
IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND!
What‽ Nine thousand!

The news that the 90000 models are going standalone combined with Okami GH make me a happy panda. :bouncy:

I might grab an extra one of they hit $100 or $50 PSOne Level, whenever my fat PS2 decides to fail.
See, if the 360 was $100 I wouldn't mind the failure rates cause we could always easily buy another one. But the PS2 is a god send for the low prices It's going for now. However, It shouldn't be more then $100 at this point.

Also, while the 360 is hitting $200 thats still $70 more then the PS2 plus it doesn't even come close to the gaming libary and cheap used prices of PS2 games. Yeah It's not next gen, but I'd recommend the PS2 to a new gamer over the 360 anyday.

The new PS2 boxes are different from the old ones, you should be able to tell if you've seen any PS2 box in the past 5 years. Blue box sounds like a PS2 original fat model, but that doesn't make sense. There's a picture of the new box in the Kotaku link.

Do these have tray lids that actually pop all the way open automatically instead of having to lift the lid? The original slim models seemed to have this problem.

Also, doesn't this model have even more PS1 and PS2 incompatibilities than the 70000? I can't seem to find the official list right now.

Is there a side by side comparison of the slim model and the newer slim model? I doesn't really seem worth it for $130 to get another PS2 unless there's a significant improvement. I still wish they'd release a PS2 with upscaling abilities... I'd pay money for that (I know there's the 20/60GB models but I can't get them new, and the 80GB model only supports some PS2 BC).

I am still waiting for the real "PSTwo" combo with an attached LCD screen.I don't think they'll do that any time soon, because a portable PS2 would be extremely similar to the PSP. Once the PSP has been replaced by a new, much more powerful Sony handheld, they could release a portable PS2 and it wouldn't compete directly.

Now, if they could come out with a way of playing PS2 games on the PSP (maybe a cheap PS2 attachment that would enable wifi remote play on the PSP, or some method of burning emulated PS2 games to UMD), that would be badass.

For all we know that might not be until 2011 when it will cost $50 and be the size of a CD Walkman. That's why it's silly to hoard backup PS2s in 2008. THe $50 psone was due to the $50 Dreamcast.

You're right the ps2 shouldn't be over $99 but why should the wii be $250 when it's an enhanced gamecube and the 360 is state of the art and is $199??

The good ps2 games aren't cheap. probably 500 ps2 games flat out suck and the good ones keep their value.

I'd probably recommend the ps2 to a 'new' gamer as well because then they could get a 360 later on. I wouldn't recommend a 360 to a new gamer because they would have nothing revolutionary to look forward to.

but the 360 has at least 30 great games as of right now. More than enough of each genre.

if sony made a new handheld it would probably have the capabilities of an advanced ps2. At that point people will find ways to copy ps2 ISOs. The psp can't many ps2 games exactly without visual sacrifice. You seen how the ratchet games look in comparison to the ps2 games, same with games like GOW. While the psp also runs at 300mhz, it's lacking lots of power compared to the ps2.

Do I have to pull up a top xbox 360 list? Just because you only like 6 doesn't mean the rest aren't acclaimed games. There are at least 30 games rated 8 or higher. 8+/10 would constitute a great game.

not to mention a wii game rated 8/10 is compared to ps2 games or other games of the same platform, if you rated a wii game against a next gen game, the scores would be very low not just in terms of graphics..

The good ps2 games aren't cheap.

Are you shitting me? Aside from some random stuff like MvC2, most stuff on PS2 that is over a year old is under twenty bucks. Last week I found a mint copy of Klonoa 2 for 7.99. Final Fantasy XII is on clearance at my Target for $10 along with God of War. The MGS Essentials set is $30, same with the GTA Trilogy. Tons of CAGs bought Rogue Galaxy for $20 at Wal-Mart earlier this year. Most of the SNK releases are $10-$15 at Best Buy. The list goes on and on.

If ever there was a time to be buying PS2 games, this is it. The system and games are still easy to find yet stores are trying to slowly cut down their PS2 sections. Furthermore, publishers are lowering the prices on their new PS2 releases. Witness Lego Batman releasing at $30 for the PS2.

I should say the 'rare' ones are cheap but if you want to compare the prices of used ps2 vs. xbox1, they're not cheap by any means.

lego batman was released for $30 because if they priced it higher, it would become players choice in no time. THere are like 5 other systems to buy it for so they price it accordingly. Hey, maybe it's a psp port, which would explain things. Just like 'ratchet size matters'.

The 90000 series is very glossy on the top. I feel that it gives the system more character, when compared side by side to the 70000 slim. I picked it up at my local Walmart, as Target didn't have any, and out of the 4 local Gamestop's near me, only one of them acknoledged that the system existed, and they only had it in Satin Silver.
I would have preferred a Ceramic White 90000, but I'm afraid the U.S. is only getting the Charcoal Black and Satin Silver, as the Lego Batman bundle has been confirmed to have the Charcoal Black unit.
Surprisingly enough, this system does not produce a whole lot of heat, as it was barely even warm after about 4 hours of gameplay last night. This is quite shocking, considering the power brick is now internal.

Then you didn't buy a 90000 series. To this day, the stores have been phasing out the 79000 series. I had to search high and low for a 90000. If you live in the U.S., then what you got was a 79000. They did not arrive in the states until about a little more than two weeks ago.

yeah, as I mentioned earlier, I would have much rather preferred a Ceramic White, but it's whatever.
From what I understand, the 79000 series is just as reliable as the 90000, but the former PS2 models could have compatability issues with PS1/PS2 games alike, as well as overheating issues. When the 79000 series came out July07, alot of that stuff was supposedly fixed.

:bomb: :roll:Why the fuck would they go PS3-esque in the case design and put a non matte finish on one side of the friggin' console? That makes no fuckin' sense at all, since the PS3's case is too shiny and easy to notice any kind of scratches or imperfections on. Even with the softest cloth, I have a bunch of scratches on the finish of my PS3. You don't notice them from far away, but up close the damn case looks ugly with the marks from me dusting it once a week.

As for PS2 games not looking ok on an HDtv, my one buddy has played his sister's PStwo on their HDtv and from what I've seen, the games look ok to me.

For people needing a spare PStwo slim though, allow me to whore out my TL, where I'm offering up a PStwo(sealed, new) with 3 extra controllers(1 sealed, 2 used but working great) and a sealed multitap for $100 plus shipping.

1. Because they can and it looks different from the other PS2s.

2. Some PS2 games look great on an HDTV. God of War, Shadow of the Colossus and most 2-D fighting games look awesome when hooked up by component. The majority of the library, however, looks like ass all warmed up. The older PS2 titles are the worst. HDTV was never a consideration when making the games and they were already filled with jaggies that just look worse when upscaled to 480p.

On the 90000 series, the door opens up 75% when laying flat on a table, and you have to lift it the rest of the way. If it's standing on it's side, it opens all of the way without fail.

ALSO, I should mention that the 90000 series has a smoothing option, like the PS3. You can set it by going to the system configuration screen. I don't remember there ever being such an option on the older models.
