Inspired by punqsux's light gun thread, this thread is a place for fans of the scrolling shooter to come together and discuss the finer points of being shot at by thousands of ships. Also, it's a way for me to get a complete list of all current-generation US release scrolling shooters.

I guess I should be more specific. i am not talking about platformer/shooter hybrids, like those, I am speaking of vertical or horizontal shooters, like Raiden or R-Type. And thanks punq for Silpheed.

I know the PS1 has great ones, but there are so many, and I'm so lazy. Maybe I'll add those soonish, because they really are some of the best (Einhander anyone?).

I have to admit i suck at these types of games, or rather the shooters released after the Atari 2600 era (I can rock some Demon attack, defender or Megamania...maybe even Galaga). I've got Einhander and it's pretty sweet, I just blow at it.

On a vaguely related note, does Rez count? Because that game is pretty sweet.

Heh, I suck at pre-2600 shooters.

No, Rez does not count. it is an on-rail shooter, like Panzer Dragoon, not a 2-D scroller.

But it is fucking fantastci.

Definitely got to have a PS1 because it counts as part of the PS2 library and provides such a wealth of titles including the great grand-daddy of scrolling shooters, Scramble, in the Konami Arcade Classics.

For scrolling shooter fans the PSone support in the PS2 is a major saving grace.

GBA brings a lot of revived SNEs classics back to easy availability. R-Type for GBC is suprisingly good when played on the GBA thanks to the better scrolling that screen allows. Gradius Galaxies is a solid entry. Phalanx is another. R-Type III was unfortunately a botched port according to reviews. (I still jump on it for $5.)

I added PSOne support, with a few games off the top of my head. I'm against adding the GB games, because as you said, they are mostly ports, hence, not this generation. Plus, I really don't want a massive list.

So, getting to the discussion part of the thread, what's everyones favorite shooter? Mine is R-type Final. I have always loved the R-Type games, and Final is easily the best. I am so hopig that it is not tru that that is the last one.

I just got Shikigami No Shiro 2 for dreamcast and I'm definately digging that one. It's gotta be my favorite at the moment.

There's Gunbird 2, Giga Wing 1 and 2, Border Down, Ikaruga, Psyvariar 2, and Zero Gunner 2 for Dreamcast as well. There is Bangai-O but I don't know if that would fit

You might want to add a dreamcast catagory, I know it will be a lot of work, but it seems like that system has the most to choose from for scrolling shooters. Such as Jimbodan's Shikigami.

Edit: And all of those games that jetset just listed.

If you're including PSOne, you need to include Dreamcast. Lots of good shooters there --Mars Matrix for starters.

Come now, how can you list Dreamcast shooters and miss the all-time hairing-pulling out game of Mars Matrix? Also Ikaruga was released for DC in JPN. Oh, and so was Border Down, one of the last DC games released. That reminds me, I need to track one of those down before they get too expensive.

schmups are my favorite genre of videogames. I'm defiantely a huge R-Type fan, so R-Type Delta is my favorite schmup. R-Type Final is an awesome game too, the graphics blew me away, but I don't think the level design was as refined as it was in Delta.

I forgot to say that it makes me sad this genre is dying :( They will probably bring back R-Type though if Final got the sales they were looking for.

Updated. I took some guesses as to what is an import, so some of those may be wrong. If anyone could correct me, that would be super.

If you are gonna list Shikigami no Shiro 2 as an import, I think it was released overseas on all the current generation consoles, and I know that both Shikigami no Shiro and the seuqel are available as imports for the xbox.

agreed, and of course, you need a list for sega saturn as well, tons of import shooters such as:

Cotton 2
Cotton Boomerang
Parodius Deluxe
Twinbee Deluxe

etc.

That's why I pointed you to www.shmups.com since they've already done all the work.

I saw that, and almost cried with joy. Still, I'd rather a new Einhander, or a new R-Type.

The R-Type games are probably my favorite. I recently bought Skygunner for PS2 and I haven't opened it yet. Is it 2d or 3d?

Yeah I know I'd really like to have the xbox version if they plan on releasing it here in the US.

Also, Sneaky, you should add the Psyvariar Complete set for a PS2 Import as well.
