After learning about Twang (www.twang.com) on here, I'm curious to find more regional food favorites. These kinds of things are great for presents because people can't normally find them outside of said region.
Around here we have Cheerwine (www.cheerwine.com) -kind of a very cherry cola (very light on the cola part).
Give me some of your local faves.

Vernors ginger ale. Makes Canada Dry taste like carbonated water.
It has a nice little kick to it.

There is a potato chip company in Chicago, Jays, that has a sub brand, Crunchers, that makes two of the best potato chips ever. One is jalapeno, the other is unsalted SWEET POTATO chips. Crunchers chips are a much thicker than normal.

They have this hot sauce at the dollar store by me, no brand that I can see. However, the stuff is amazing, and half the cost of Tobasco.

Hmm, not sure if Cheap Las Vegas Buffet falls under a local/regional favorite or not. I can't think of any kind of food that this town has invented itself.

Garbage Plates. An odd mixture of hamburgers, hot dogs, mac salad, homefries and heart attacks.
They have a Bakery Company here in Philadelphia called "TastyCakes"" they sell coffee cakes, pies, and all sorts of cake and pastery type foods. i dont know how far they distribute but i think its only regional, i know they dont distribute to the middle and western parts of the country

I know you can occasionally find TastyCake stuff around here in SW Va. The Butterscotch Krimpettes are quite tasty.

A personal favorite of mine that can only be found in New Brunswick, NJ are Fat Cats et al. My personal favorite is the Fat Moon, and the Fat Darrell was recently named as america's best sandwich by Maxim (from RU Hungry). Many places to get them, but nowhere else but, unless the infamous chicken finger sub is similar to it.

I was going to say Tastykakes as well. Whenever my cousins from Chicago come to Philadelphia, they always take boxes of Tastykakes back home because they can't buy them where they live.
Also, I would say, a real Philly Cheesesteak. I have seen so called "Philly Cheesesteaks" in other parts of the country but they can't compare to the real thing.
Chicken and pork spiedies (pronounced speedies) from Binghamton, NY. Basically, it's just meat marinated in a special concoction and slapped on a roll.

Lamb spiedies as well. These are becoming less and less regional though as two of the area's marinade makers get bigger distribution. I used to work at Salameda making Speidie sauce. Also, I love white pizza, which used to be limited to this part of the state, but has become more and more widespread.

I would have to say Sonic. They are expanding so I don't know how regional they are. They are a 50's type drive in fast food place. Great coneys and mixed fountain drinks.

I can remember when I'd only see Sonics when traveling in the Southeast but after they became part of the Carls Jr. empire they've been trying to go national. It still throws me when I see them advertised locally.
For Los Angeles area, a lot of big fast food names originated here along with the car culture but the two that stand out for being very local until recent years are Tommy's and In 'n Out. Some things like Tail of the Pup are one of a kind.
In terms of a non-branded local foodstuff I can't really thing of any. There's regional brands, of course but none I'd actively foist on a visitor unless they expressed an interest first. Where east of the Rockies you have Hellman's we have Best Foods. Where the east has Edy's we have Dreyer's, and so on.
They may not have the shelf presence of Canada Dry but Vernor's has been in Los Angeles delis and deeper stocked stores since the late '60's. As you can read here: http://www.dpsu.com/vernors.html the brand goes wayyy back, all the way to the Civil War era in Detroit. Nowadays part of the British Cabury Schweppes.

I'm not sure if they still do, but I used to buy subs a long time ago from this place in Rutgers U. in New Brunswick, NJ that had everything in it. They had a chicken marinara w/ fries and some other side inside a sub.
Cluck U. had the best chicken sauce too, also around Rutgers.

Yeah, it's the Fat Cat style of sandwiches, you can get them at the grease trucks still, or at several places along easton ave. That's what I was talking about, pure fried, fatty, goodness.

I've had Garbage Plates from Tahou's, Jay's Diner (founded by Nick's brother) and a couple other places. I recently had one from Bill Gray's (the chain) and must say, no matter how you make 'em, Garbage Plates are just always good.
Cheapy's a big fan, too...see if he weighs in on this topic.

My fave local restaurant is this buffet called Ton's Mongolian Grill. They are a franchise, but to my knowledge there are only two of them. No matter how I change my plate, it always tastes the same. But that means it always tastes awesome.

You just named the one I don't go to (I've been to that location only once). I go to the one in south Arlington. There was a point in time where my g/f and I were going there 3 times a week. I can't get enough of it.

Big ups to Ted's Hot Dogs, Mighty Taco, Chicken Finger subs, and wings from Buffalo. In Austin they have real good salsa from the "East Side Cafe'"
