In the past week or so, I have had a number of people on eBay try to pay me with a credit card through PayPal, even though I say in my auction descriptions that I do not accept credit cards. Most of them were cool and are either verifying their accounts now or sending a money order, but two users, each with 5 or less feedback, have already left me negatives. I e-mailed both immediately after denying their payments, yet neither responded to ask what they were doing wrong and simply left me negative feedback. I may clarify in the future that PayPal accounts must be verified, but is there really anything I can do about this type of thing?

Post some of your previous auctions please.

I recently had a CAG pay me via PayPal out of his checking account (according to him), and it appeared in my account as a credit card payment. I took his word on PayPal treating checking account transfers as credit card payments, so I figured I might as well upgrade since I plan on selling on eBay soon. I have now become yet another shiny dollar sign to PayPal. :(

Actually, I think PayPal takes a fee out of every transaction now so it doesn't really matter much.

People buying on ebay will never learn, same thing happens to me half the time. I like the people who buy the item and then just pay, no emailing you and saying they wanna play with money order and that they just really enjoy angering you.

I was thinking that, but I don't know how. Is there a way to make those credit card icons not show up?

I don't think so and I would venture to say it is against PayPal policy to not accept credit card payments.

Look, here is some advice from a guy who has tried to change the world.
First of all, just start over and open a new account.
Second, you're never going to change the world. When you say "I accept Paypal", people think automatically that you mean "however you can pay me through Paypal is Ok by me". When you say "no credit cards", they're thinking "he accepts Paypal, but he doesn't have his own credit card processing method (website, machine, etc.)" - so they still think credit through Paypal is Ok.
Finally, TRUST ME - if you could somehow communicate without a shadow of a doubt the difference between Paypal and credit cards, etc., you will still make far less money in the long run than if you just give in, give Paypal their cut, and accept the small liability that someone's going to screw you.
You can sell 10 games for $100 and hide from all the bad people with credit cards out there while sticking it to Paypal, or you can sell those same 10 games for $200, give Paypal their $10, take a $20 loss on one of the games because of a shady guy with a fake credit card, and still come out $70 ahead.
It's not how you or I want it to be. We would all like to have maximum security and have to pay nothing to anybody for monetary services, but the fact remains that people will pass up auctions if their method of payment isn't accepted. I have passed many bids because a person didn't accept anything but Money Orders and it wasn't worth the time and effort for me to go get a MO for the particular item. As frustrating as it is, you can't change people (too bad politicians can't figure this one out).
I went through this when somebody gave me the shaft on Ebay after I sent him his game. He filed a complaint with Paypal and said he "never got it". They gave him a full refund at my expense. I immediately updated all my auctions and said "confirmed addresses only through Paypal, and buyer assumes all risk" with a brief explanation of how Paypal puts all of the risk on the seller. I thought my 1,000+ 99% positive feedback would suffice, but sure enough, all my auctions started ending low. $5 here, $10 there. Suddenly I was like "Ok, I've been screwed by 1 guy out of 1,000 and now I'm losing $5 per auction because I'm too pissed to deal with getting screwed once every 1,000 auctions. Let's see...$5 per auction times 1,000 auctions is $5,000 I'll lose over the next few years. But nobody will screw me, and that will be $50 back in my pocket!" Not worth it.
It's all a matter of whether or not your pride can handle doing it a different way than you necessarily want.

Like others pointed out, your problem is that you are showing the Paypal credit card logos. What you need to do is uncheck Paypal as a Payment method accepted and manually state that you accept non credit card paments. You can also use HTML to put in another Paypal logo that doesn't show the credit cards but I'm not sure how to do it.
"I accept PayPal, personal checks, and postal money orders ONLY. Sorry, no credit cards or concealed cash."
I would also reword that to say
""I accept non credit card PayPal payments, personal checks, and postal money orders ONLY. Sorry, no credit cards or concealed cash.""
When you say "I accept Paypal" it sounds like you accept all forms of Paypal. The part about no credit cards sounds like you don't take credit cards direct.

What exactly is the difference between PayPal with a credit card and "regular" PayPal. If a person doesn't have anything in their PayPal account and they buy something then it's going to go out of their credit card anyway.

You need to leave those people negative feedbacks, since they left you some and its their fault.
And then make a new account.

60%? Harsh. Make a new account.
I was thinking that, but I don't know how. Is there a way to make those credit card icons not show up?
I don't think so and I would venture to say it is against PayPal policy to not accept credit card payments.
That is not correct. Paypal allows you to have a Personal account which can not accept CC funded payments, only payments from existing funds or bank transfers can be accepted. (And no fees are deducted from those payments)
What is against PayPal policy is to have buyers pay your personal account if you also have a business/premier account at PayPal. (For example you list your personal account with your eBay auctions then if they try to pay with a CC you reject that and instruct them to make that payment to your other premier account, that is a no no.) It is okay to have both a personal and a premier account, but the personal account is then only to be used for personal things. My take on that would be for transactions with people you already knew like selling something on CAG. All this junk is in their help/FAQ section.
Actually, I think PayPal takes a fee out of every transaction now so it doesn't really matter much.
This is also not correct. They take a fee out of every transaction if you have a business or premiere account (one that can accept CC funded payments) even if the payment is from existing funds (which sucks bigtime...)
But if your account is a personal one (can not accept CC payments) no fees are deducted from payments to you.
It irks me that PayPal takes their chunk even if the payment is from existing funds, but I upgraded the first time an eBay buyer tried to pay me with their CC (even though I also clearly said non Credit Card paypal in my auctions) as I was really worried I would have the same problem as the OP. Takes a lot of the headaches out of things if you just upgrade your PayPal, even though the fees really blow.
But since I upgraded I now let PayPal send out their automated winning bidder notification for me (I didn't want to do that before I accepted CC payments) so I don't have to manually e-mail the winners after each auction. Now I just e-mail them to let them know I've shipped, unless they don't pay in a timely manner. It's almost worth the fee for that.
video_gamer324, I think your item description was pretty unclear. Here is what you say:
I accept PayPal, personal checks, and postal money orders ONLY. Sorry, no credit cards or concealed cash.
That really does make it look like you are simply saying you can't accept CCs outside of Paypal. (As somebody else said) I would rephrase it to be something like:
I accept non-Credit Card PayPal, personal checks, etc etc. My PayPal account is a Personal one, therefore it can only accept payments funded via existing funds or via bank account transfers. (It can not accept payments funded via Credit Card.)
But again in hindsight it would probably have been a lot better to just have upgraded your account and accept the payments. You'd have your money and not have those neg feedback.
I went through this when somebody gave me the shaft on Ebay after I sent him his game. He filed a complaint with Paypal and said he "never got it". They gave him a full refund at my expense. Awesome post man.
Sometimes when I see certain seller's auctions that have a big section of all the things they won't do or whatever 'because I've been burned too many times.' I just think (like you state above) it's just making them look like they'll quite possibly be very difficult to deal with after the auction.

Well my advice to everyone is just accept the creditcards and charge a bit more for the shipping (state shipping costs clearly), you will avoid a lot of headache. Also you will get your payments faster.
The flaw in those auctions were basically (as already pointed out),
- PayPal logo had pictures of creditcards.
- PayPal qnd Ebay invoices usually even say something like "pay easily with creditcard".
- You state " I expect payment within 72 hours of the auction’s end", but if a person does not have funds on their paypal account it can often take more than 72 hours to transfer funds to it.
I'm happy when I get a fast payment with PayPal, I get people all the time that try to send money orders and cash, even though I clearly state only paypal :x.
chosen1s words are very wise, that is exactly how things work on Ebay :)

I have learned the hard way to say in all acutions
shipping rates differ for canada, HI ,and AK (please email for rates)
paypal only no credit cards
no refunds or returns
payment must be recived in 5 days of acution end
please email before leaving neg feeback so we can resolve issue.
these are just a few I include in every acution no matter what.
and I still get people who want to pay MO, leave neg feedback cause I ship first class instead of media mail. etc.

Why would someone leave negative feedback for that? If I was a buyer and a seller shipped first class instead of media mail I would be happy because I would get the item faster.

Go into your paypal account, and go into Auction tools, go into the manual logos. You can copy and paste the HTML code on the ebay page. They have lots of logo selection, a few without Credit Card Logos. Then turn off the Automatic Logo Insertion Feature. This will take care of that.
