I work at a EBgames and my manager told me we are going to be getting a bunch of new Gameboy SP because nintendo is re releasing them due to popularity. It's true we never have any in stock to sell even used ones. They are going to sell for $49.99, personally I think this is a good idea and many people will purchase them.

hmm 50 though?

I was hoping to pick up another replacement... hopefully with a brighter screen.

I picked up the gen 1 model and I do like the brighter screen.

I really wouldn't mind picking up a few, how much are they used?

I didn't have an opinion. I just wanted to put my hand on my chin and think. :-k

I mean, I guess it makes sense seeing as how they can just do a run of these and they'll sell pretty well. Especially if they make some new color.

I guess this will start up the stupid conspiracy theories again about "OMG New DS w/ no Gameboyz slot?!?"

There's sort of a parallel here with the PS3 removing BC and pumping out a new brickless PS2. But then you'd have to disregard all of that Simpson DNA stuff. Sorry, just lapsed into "Who Killed Mr. Burns?" there for a second.

In conclusion, I'd buy one for $30-40.

well I wonder why the big N would do this... since the DS can already play GBA games....

And the only point in keeping a GBA SP is for GBC and GB since the DS can't play those.

are they trying to make sure that the old GB & GBC games still float around, have something to play on?

Or

Would people opt to getting a GBASP because the DS is too 'expensive'.... but this is silly because when are games still getting retail space... right now I only see a few that are still selling and most are not MSRP 29.99.... not that they would be getting a profit from the games...

Out of ideas...

new GBA SP cost a lot on ebay, so there is a demand for them. Now all they have to do is reprint some hard to find GBA games like minish cap

Not worth $50...thats for sure...

Could this mean there's something to a redesigned DS coming out with the GBA slot removed?

I doubt it, but I guess it's a possibility.

That came out of nowhere. Not that I'm entirely opposed, as I've always wanted to replace my side-lit with a back-lit unit. And $50 means it's got a place in the market for those who don't want to drop $120 on a DS...

This makes no sense. They should release some of the GBA game with a sticker that says "Works on the DS!" like they do with some GC games on the Wii.

Then in 2011 (the GBA SP will be 10 years old)they should release the GBA with even more released games and sell the games for no more than $15 and the system for $30.

The only reason I could see Nintendo doing this is to see if they should use the DS name of the GB name for the next handheld.

Right now I see no reason for this at all, and don't believe it.

While I'm always one to champion the knowledge of the common EB employee, I'll wait for more proof.

I guess in our mad world - where the Nintendo that populates it appears to be run by crazed baboons - this theory isn't wholly without merit.

Theflicker said everything else I wanted to say, and did so with a cool avatar, which makes his opinion better than yours.

I actually sold about four of these that I found at a Pamida this spring for about $120-150 each. So yes they are in demand.

I'll buy a new one at $50. I miss being able to play GBC games without firing up the Gamecube.

Out of ideas...

To sell more slightly cheaper systems to lower income gamers and pregamers. As for the older cartridges pre-GBA, they are not going to float around because big business are fazing them out; they might make a re-release of them on the newer systems DS.

I hate the cramped feeling of the SP compared to the Micro, so I don't care if this happens.

It's funny to see people saying "meh I wouldn't buy it for $50" while people consistently buy these for over $100 on ebay.

They want to quash interest to pick this up on clearance and sell it on eBay for $100 :)

My guess is these are left over stock from another region (Japan?), and are only being sold this "late" because it took time to ship them back and re-package them.

For GBA, the micro is far superior ergonomically speaking. At least to me.

I honestly thought the old horizontal GBA was the most comfortable- too bad you couldn't see shit on the screen without some sort of external lighting. The SP was a little too cramped but the Micro was a bit better.

I'd be all for an SP re-release at $50. At the least, it would drive down market prices... I've been meaning to get one to play old GB/GBC games on.

Yes, the original GBA felt great, but it's screen completely broke it. That's why I don't vote for it. I love my micro though.

I always enjoyed the style, felt a bit toyish but it was comfortable for hours of play.

maybe one could update the screen for backlite, I swear I saw a mod for that... somewhere.

So, in light of Cheepy's front page post, and the comment someone else made on page 1, is this a legit rumor, or total BS?

Fine, let me rephrase. Was this rumor made up by a CAG for the contest? Yes or no.

I know that rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, thank you. I was simply curious.

I kind of doubt they would re-release the SP, but if they did it in some cool color I really liked I'd probably pick one up. I don't really NEED one though, especially since I already have a Pearl Blue backlit SP and a Famicom Micro.

Edit: By the way, the Famicom Micro is only $49.90 on Play-asia now.

CAGCast #133 released on 9/15.
This thread released on 9/16.
The OP started the thread and never made another comment since.
The GBA is a dead system.

It would be nice of him to let us know either way, but those facts pretty much spell out the answer. If you really need to know, PM him.

FYI: I already have. And congrats. You are the second person on CAG I have ever felt the need to add to the ignore list. In the future, if you are more civil, you will find your thoughts are listened to, rather than ignored and dismissed.

No doubt in my mind this was a product of the CAGCast. Anyone wanna send a link to Kotaku?

Thanks, I don't mind him adding me to his ignore-list if he considers a nicely compiled list of facts an act of rudeness to the ban degree.

It'll be his loss, though. He'll never get to see this:

EDIT (BONUS CONTENT): Since I'm being ignored anyhow, I'm going to take one glove off for just a moment:

i think they would sell like hot cakes at 29.99 just to allow people to play Gameboy and GBC on the go.

i know i would buy one in a second for 30 bucks new

50 would be pushing it
