It's coming, and it's coming soon.

The HTC Dream is going to be a T-Mobile exclusive.

$179 with 2 year contract
Available Oct 22, available for pre-order it now.

. QWERTY Keyboard & GPS. It will be 3G. Expected to launch with Chrome, Google Docs, Maps and the Android OS.

NEW YORK (AP) - The first cell phone running Google Inc.'s mobile software looks something like Apple Inc.'s iPhone and has a large touch screen, but it also packs a trackball, a slide-out keyboard and easy access to Google's e-mail and mapping programs.
Google made its debut as a cell phone software provider Tuesday at an event where wireless carrier T-Mobile said it will begin selling the G1 phone for $179 with a two-year contract. The device hits U.S. stores Oct. 22 and heads to Britain in November and other European countries early next year.

The phone will be sold in T-Mobile stores only in the U.S. cities where the company has rolled out its faster, third-generation wireless data network. By launch, that will be 21 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Houston and Miami.

In other areas, people will be able to buy the phone from T-Mobile's Web site. The phone does work on T-Mobile's slower data network, but it's optimized for the faster networks. It can also connect at Wi-Fi hotspots.

The data plan for the phone will cost $25 per month on top of the calling service, at the low end of the range for data plans at U.S. wireless carriers. And at $179, the G1 is $20 less than the least expensive iPhone in the U.S.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google's founders, made a surprise appearance at the launch event. "It's just very exciting for me as a computer geek to be able to have a phone that I can play with and modify and innovate upon just like I have with computers in the past," Brin said.

He said he'd written an application for Android already: When a user throws the phone into the air, the program records how long it takes until it lands, using the phone's built-in motion sensor. Brin acknowledged that the wisdom of including such a program with an expensive phone is dubious.

"We did not include that one by default," he said.

Page said the mobile phone industry, which sells 1 billion units a year worldwide, was a tremendous opportunity for Google.

Google is giving away Android, the software that underlies the G1, for free, and opening the operating system to third-party developers who can create their own programs. Google hopes that in turn, mobile phones will provide even more ways for people to interact with the company's advertising network.

No word on how much memory it will have.

I'm a Google fanboy (if such a thing exists) so I will be getting this for sure, plus I already have T-mobile and am happy with it and am up for a contract renewal. Thoughts? Is this an iphone killer?

I'm pretty excited about this. I was glad to hear today that the price is $200 as that is my limit for a phone. I'm on T-Mobile and love it, and I'm also up for a contract renewal. I really hope the plan price won't kill it, though. The reason I don't own an iPhone is terrible plan price, so if T-Mobile has a $70 minimum for the Dream I'll likely have to pass on that as well and go with a Sidekick.

i read one site that said data plans will start at 25 and go up to 35 depending on how much messaging you want. i could probably handle that.

Android's free and open source, right?

Anyone know how much cell phone manufacturers currently end up paying for the OS (windows mobile, etc)?

It'll be interesting to see if Android makes smart phones cheaper

Messaging isn't big for me, so if I could get a $30 phone plan with the $25 data I could totally manage that.

My contract expires soon. You guys think I should wait for this? Unless I can get it for free from amazon I won't even bother... when I could just get this instead:

Wait... is that correct about the $100 rebate? Amazon ships the phone for free and you get a $100 rebate?

Sure is.. when it comes to T-mobile, amazon always hooks it up. I've received rebates on all my free phones for the past 5 years or so.. It's also why I'm hoping I can get a free Dream from them. It is currently slated for a September 23, 2008 release date.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Dream#cite_note-3)[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Dream#cite_note-iht_first-2)

Looks like the free phone is only for a new line of service, though.

Too bad, or I would jump on it.

Right.. what you do is: when your old contract expires, get the new one.. then call them and ask them to port your old number over. In the process, your old account will be canceled.

But if it's the same name and whatnot, won't they know it's the same account and just extend your current contract instead of making a duplicate account?

I don't know.. I wouldn't try that cuz then amazon might charge you an extra $250.

The way I described is the way I've always done it and it hasn't failed yet. However, I also plan on transferring my line to my family plan after the number gets ported over. I hope that doesn't trigger amazon's fee. :\

I just saw this phone when I was looking up stuff for the iPhone. Blah so apparently, the rumored $200 price only applies to new 2 year contracts, or contracts 22months into a 2year/11months into a 1 year? If so, that sucks so much. I've been using Tmobile for probably 3 years now and JUST renewed/upgraded my plan a few months ago.

Doesn't look great from the pic....

I really wish Verizon would get some decent phones. Though honestly I don't think I'd pay the big bucks for a data plan anyway, so it's moot for me. I usually have my laptop with me when I travel so i really don't have much need for internet, e-mail etc. on my phone. Especially not for the $80 and up plans. And I have no desire to leave verizon as my girlfriend and most my friends have it so it's great for the unlimited mobile-to-mobile for me and I get a nice discount through my employer (though I can get similar discounts with a couple of the other companies as well).

But it's still odd that the company with the largest network and most users can't get better phones. iPhone=AT&T. Samsung Instinct=Sprint. Google phone=T Mobile.

You'd think verizon would have the cash to land a good exclusive phone like those.

I really wish I didn't have to get RAPED every month for stuff/features/service I want. That goes for ALL the industry and what make ALL these phones worthless.

While I am really looking forward to Android alot, that phone doesn't look very good.

Also, I want to stick with AT&T and unlocked phones are ridiculously expensive.

My first thought as well, I thought the iphone already showed you can have a keyboard on screen that works fine so I don't quite get why it still needs a slide out. But i'm more concerned about speed which is something HTC doesn't handle too well with their phones.

I thought the same thing until I realized that T-Mobile's 3G coverage is unbelievably shitty and the device relies a lot on 3G, so much that apparently they're only allowing preorders in 3G areas.

So much for this phone.

Can you explain what that means? I'm a total noob with cell phones. If it can call people, I'm good.

Also, do some of the features require a monthly fee? I know that internet/email costs at least $25 a month. How about the GPS? It connects via Wi-Fi so I'm not sure if that means I'll need to pay.
