While poring over the Japanese Patent Office database, Siliconera picked up on (http://www.siliconera.com/2008/09/19/a-new-metal-gear-solid-game-exists/) an entry by Konami that's sure to spark your curiosity: Metal Gear Solid Existence. Registered for use with an upcoming videogame, this title mirrors Konami's August 11 registration of the name Existence with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. For the record, Guns of the Patriots was also a separate trademark from Metal Gear Solid 4 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140656).

Concrete details are beyond scarce when it comes to this potential new Metal Gear Solid, but there's more than enough rampant speculation out there. One common theory would suggest that -- because Solid Snake's story has come to a close (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168338) -- this Metal Gear will explore the origins of the series, most likely centered around the Big Boss character. Others postulate that this will be an expanded and improved version of Metal Gear Solid 4 -- following the naming scheme of MGS2: Substance (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2005864) and MGS3: Subsistence (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140399). Our guess? We're betting on a tactical RPG played from the perspective of Liquid Ocelot's right arm.

very exciting.

Hmm... My money is on an expanded version of MGS4. Then again, Metal Gear 1 and/or 2 redone completely would allow Konami to keep raking in that Big Boss/Solid Snake cash.

Wouldn't it need a 4 in the title to be related to MGS4?

The OP said that they patented "Guns of the Patriots" separately from "Metal Gear Solid 4", I'm guessing they'll simply drop "Guns..." and stick in "Existence".

Bah. 360 owners have every right to enjoy MGS4.

Still, this news almost makes me want to hold off on playing through the game again until I found out if there really will be an extended version. I guess I'll just go back and play Subsistence and wait. :D

I think it's a movie collection of the games like the MGS3 Subsistence third disk.

Except that they didn't patent "Metal Gear Solid 4: Existence," just "Metal Gear Solid Existence."

We'll see. I'll bet you a 500 point VC game that I'm right ;)

I know this is a stupid nitpick, but as an IP lawyer, it drives me crazy when people say that Konami "patented" the name. They registered the trademark. Patents and trademarks are two completely different things. Rant over, resume your speculating.
