View Full Version : PS3... more than meets the eye?

I recently purchased a PS3 mainly for the reason of a Blu-Ray player. I also picked up R&C: Tools of Destruction, MGS4, and Motorstorm. I started messing around with the features of the system and I think it may have a lot more to offer than the 360. First I really like putting in memory cards and making the pictures the BG for my system (not a big deal but cool). I also really like having built in Wi-Fi and being able to surf the web (I am having trouble getting streaming video to work though on sites like surf the channel). I haven't even tried to set up a media server to stream from but this could be an interesting project as well.
On to the games... honestly the only PS3 game I have really played much yet is R&C. I knew the PS3 had some motion sensing but I never know how cool it could actually be. I'm not too far into the game yet but I really like the parts where you are flying downward and use the controller to steer your character through the debris. What other games take advantage of the motion sensing controllers like this? I'm sure i will be in for a treat once I start MGS4 (I have been feeling nostalgic and decided to beat MGS first). Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase!

The PS3's a robot in disguise? I knew it.
Not too many developers take control of the motion sensing controller because they see it as a gimmick and trust me, the novelty will wear off. If you want an immensely motion sensing game though, then get LAIR, you fly a dragon that's 100% motion controllers sans attacks. If you still like it after playing that game, then try motorstorm. Hell, I think even the demo of motorstorm uses motion sensing.

heavenly sword makes a good use of the motion sensing. :)

IMO, some games use motion sensing very well (like Folklore, High Velocity Bowling, etc.). It can be utilized well, just that developers have to find the best way to use it and not try to force it (NBA 2k games is cool because the controller can be used to shoot free throws).

Grab Flow off PSN if you're looking for a motion sensor enabled game. It's fun, but little more than an interactive screen saver.

Motion sensing? Really? Please elaborate!

wasnt a fan of the motion sensing sections of ratchet and clank. its better if they keep it as a selectable option for games over making it mandatory to use. i tried it for gta4 during that section where you can and i cant imagine anyone using it through the whole game. i wish sony would bring out a sly cooper game already.

I tried the SixAxis tutorial as well, lolkizz, and I was definitely unimpressed by it. It seemed like more of a pain in the ass to do things that way. Mind you, the Heavenly Sword stuff that people talked about seemed pretty cool, but I got bored with the game not having an actual JUMP button to string together some vicious aerial combos and I returned it to Gamestop before the week's return period was up.

I'm not a fan of motion control AT ALL (didn't even know Wii had it until after I bought it). You can try Warhawk as well, which hooked me even though I'm not a fan of shooters. You can fly planes with motion control in it.
And, yes, the PS3 is a damn nice media toy to play with. Things really took off for it this year as the games are catching up to the hardware and you grabbed some good ones already (You're in for a treat this holiday season as well as the first half of next year). Glad to see another one take the plunge, check out some of the PSN games as well. Enjoy!

Ironic thing was that the 360 was the console featured briefly in the "Transformers" movie.
I have a feeling that the 360 would be an Autobot, PS3 would be a badass Deceptecon, and the Wii would be a gobot (remember gobots?)

Download the demo for Lair off of the Hong Kong PSN first. I tried it with both motion sensing and analog control and didn't like it. I've heard that the DS3 is not as sensitive as the Sixaxis though, but I've never had the confirmed.

In warhawk you can fly using the motion sensing, although I can't do it (didn't try for too long).

R&C and Heavenly Sword both do a good job of using SIXAXIS without abusing. In those games I felt the SIXAXIS added to the game, as opposed to be a gimmick forced down your throat.
Using the SIXAXIS to drive would be cool on a fun racing game like Toy Home, but not precise enough for mostorstorm or burnout IMHO.

I hate the "motion sensing" parts of Uncharted where you've got to balance Drake as he walks across the logs. They're just so gimmicky.

Don't forget that in R&C: ToD you can (must) use motion sensing to control the tornado. It took me a while to realize this, but once I did, that weapon became awesome.

GTA4 has a few things; I remember renting it, and the first thing I learned to do was reload by "cocking" the controller. I thought that was pretty cool.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End has SA support for when you cross logs (just like in Uncharted); not sure if that's the only support for it or not, but the game itself isn't bad. I beat it rather quickly, so get it for cheap or rent it.

:D I had lent my PS2 to a friend (never to be seen again) after I had fallen out of video games for a while early-mid 06. When the Wii came out I was joking with my g/f that I was going to wake up at 3am on Black Friday and walk across the street to the mall to buy a Wii since I was jonesing for some games. I wasn't serious but when I woke up to pee at 2:45 I realized my destiny lay in the hands of fate. All I knew at that point was that 360s were breaking down, PS3 was $600 and I was a Mario/Zelda fanboy having grown up on those it was an easy choice to go with Nintendo for my """ next gen """ console.
I took it home and was pleasantly surprised by Wii sports, only to have to work a mid-day shift that day. I called my g/f from work to see what was up and realized she had been playing the bowling game since she got home at 5pm until I got home at 10:30pm.
Needless to say the novelty faded quickly and I spent most of 2007 playing Gamecube games until I picked up my PS3 in August of last year. I now only play my Wii every few months out of pity and chastise myself for buying SMG, TP, SSMB, ect... and barely, if ever, playing them.
I love my PS3 and tell my fiance that I'll grab it before I'd grab our cat if our apartment ever caught on fire. In fact, this thread inspired me to research media sharing/TVersity since Saturday night and when I realized I could play my collection of over 200 movies I downloaded between 2001-2006 that are burned to CD on my TV through it, I almost cried tears of joy.

I like in Resistance:FoM when the chimera grab onto you and you have to throw them off with the sixaxis.
I don't like having to shake it like an idiot in Siren when you get knocked down by a shibito.
