View Full Version : Anyone not like RPG's?

I grew up in the pre-story era of videogames. Kong would steal the girl, and seconds later, Mario went after her.
It seems today, games all have stories, some better than others. RPG's to me seem little more that semi-interactive stories. You read bits of dialogue, fight some enemies through a menu system and spend experience and gold.
Not to knock the games, because I know a lot of people are into them, but they are rather boring to me. Anyone agree? I guess I crave the joystick-busting action absent from these.

I used to agree, I would never even try them. Then I caved in and tried a few. Now they are my favorite genre of game.

I think that most rpgs are boring now adays because they are too easy, like the enemies on the way to bosses can be killed without thinking whatsoever, but usually boss fights are fun if they are challenging. I still play rpgs and its still tied as my favorite with FPS games, but they need to be harder to where you actually die and get pissed of sometimes.

I don't enjoy paying money for entertainment that pisses me off. That's why I hate RPG's. I don't like turn based fighting, incipid and lengthy dialogue, or watching a game more than playing it.
I don't know if Balder's Gate qualifies as an RPG - I loved that game and most others like it such as Champs of Norrath and Gauntlet. Other than that I could live a happy life if there were never a Final Fantasy game ever made again, ever!

I generally don't like RPGs, at least I don't like Square-like RPGs when the battles are turn-based and you don't have any sort of strategy a la Shining Force/Disgaea/etc. Things like Final Fantasy are incredibly boring to me, as the main draw in these games is the story. Since I could care less about the story in a video game (if I want a good story, there are plenty of good books around...even good movies that are superior in that department), I don't really rate a game based on that. The turn-based repetitive crappy combat of most RPGs means I dislike them. A lot.

I like them but i dont play them as much anymore because they are so time consuming. I also got kind of sick of almost every RPG plot having to do with saving the entire world.

I love RPGs, but the op sounds just like my dad. He jokingly calls them "talkies" and then goes off to play some PC FPS.

I like Action-RPG's only. When you get into the "its your turn, its my turn" kind of crap, i get sick of it, I feel like im not in control. And it seems like all you do is push buttons and you win, or push buttons and you lose, I know that there is more depth to that, and maybe thats why I never got into them. Now when we get talking about Zelda type games now we're talking.
My only exception: StarWars Knights of the Old Republic

I'm not a huge fan of RPGs whose battles are turn based, but I enjoy RPGs with real time combat

I am a fan of RPGs. One of the reasons I got into them originally is because you get your money's worth out of them since they are much longer.
I would prefer to play games similar to Zelda , but RPGs are great

Sounds like a cool dad to me.
On a side note, I had no interest in Fable until I wayched a video. It looks more action, than talk.

RPG's may be long but it's only cause there slow. You can never get right into the game, i gotta sit through 50,847 text boxs before my stupid character wakes the hell outta bed. There all the same to, you collect a few screenshots from the 16 bit era and you'd be surprised to see they all look the same. And does every rpg start with your character in bed? And why do you only fight monsters, someone needs to reinvent the wheel cause it's squeaking loudy with the sound of suck. Also i hate turn based, i gotta sit there and get hit? WTF. That and the time you must invest and killing stupid enemies until you hit level 2 and you have 2 more hit points, gimme some damn body armor. Give me an action game or a platformer any day of the week. Plus i never saw strategy in RPG's, you just level up until you have enough health for a war of arbitration, there are plenty more strategic moments in Rainbow six games then rpg's.

I don't quite have the time to invest in RPGs and I can't stand the turn-based battle system they employ.
I'm always in and out and sometimes it takes forever for the game to start and to get to save points, etc.

I used to dislike RPG's. Then I signed on to the free Dragon Warrior with nintendo power subscription deal. I've been a fan ever since.

I like RPG's mainly because there's so much variation (i.e. gameplay, side quests, etc.). To me, there just isn't too much difference within the racing, sports, FPS, and platformer genres. I also like the "pretty" music and visuals found in most RPG's - you just can't get that lush, beautiful orchestral music anywhere else.

I know what you mean...Im still in the 2d fighter and 2d shooter phase. I played and beat Final Fantasy 7....but I'm afraid to waste that much time on a video game. You live is flashing by you on minute at a time.

Lunar's a particularly short game with no real substance.

I love to read a good book.
I also love to play videogames
Therefore, RPG's are a good fit for me.
I just don't have the time to play them anymore, unless they are on GBA

GBA rpgs are nice because I can like watch a baseball game and play at the sametime, since baseball is kinda boring and rpgs can be kinda boring it makes a good combo.

I like them, but I never have the patience to follow through and finish the fucking things. Fallout is the only one I really remember finishing, but Fable should change that.

I don't really like them all that much. Some people Gush all over them but they aren't that great. I liked PSO but that was more hack & slash. I liked Grandia 2 and I'm really liking KOTOR but I agree so many of them are boring. Dues Ex had RPG elements and that's my #1 game of all time but it was a FPS at it's core.
Some people think that RPGs take no skill to play, and I do kinda feel that way. I think games like metal arms, Mars Matrix, and Nija Gaiden ask more from a player.

My feellings exactly. Maybe I can't get into them because I don't devote enough time to games. I'll play for an hour and a half every three days or so.
Breaking up a story like that is frustrating.
But life is rapidly passing us by.

I like true RPGs that are challenging and not totally linear. For most of FFx I felt like I was watching a movie rather than playing a game. FF1 and even FF7 were much better RPGs.
Action RPGs like Zelda are in a whole other class, which I also enjoy.
