View Full Version : Official CAG Presidential Debate Drinking Game (and discussion too I suppose...)
RAMSTORIA

I guess we can talk about the debate too, but I'd like to come up with a drinking game for tonight with some of my friends. Here are some rules I thought of, feel free to give some suggestions and I'll update the OP with them (as long as they aren't excessive or silly). It's recommended to use beer and not tequila, unless you want to do liver damage and go to the hospital of course.
Take a drink everytime
McCain says...
"POW"
Mention's Obama's experience
mentions radical islamic fundamentalists
mentions Ronald Reagan
References of the Democratic congress being impotent, "so what makes you think a Democratic President would be any different..."
America isn't going to be safe by just talking to those that hate us.
Says the Surge worked.
Obama says...
"Hope" or "Change"
Mentions McCain's Age
References to McCain's foreign policy being more of the same and "bush like".
Either candidate says...
"911"
Ahmadinejad
Mentions a VP for either side.
Two Drinks if...
A Candidate confuses one country for another
Finish your drink if...
McCain calls Obama, "Osama" on accident (or on purpose!)
A 3rd party candidate is mentioned
Well, keep em coming.

In the whirlwind of words and accusations, it's hard to really pin down the primary differences, if any, between the two so far.
It's amusing to watch them attack each other's favorite party talking points though...
What I wouldn't give for just one candidate to say all they intend to do whittle the role of government down to upholding the constitution, bill of rights, and enforcing the law for a change.... Instead, we get to argue about what extra goodies the government should or shouldn't give everyone.

That's because the underlying theme of each of their positions that won't be said outloud is:
Obama - If you didn't like Bush, don't vote McCain, he's more of the same.
McCain - Obama's experience in foreign policy and war is very little compared to mine.

Body language is a lot in these debates. It doesn't matter if it was at McCain or not. If you remember about the first debate in 2004, a lot of people criticized Bush's body language, saying he looked tired and upset and frustrated. And he lost his advantage at the time due to that debate.

McCain clearly tried to put together insubstantial sound bites using points that aren't really argumentative in nature, but are merely made to invoke a certain kind of feeling in someone listening. Obama outlined a lot of reasons for his policy positions and what he's going to do as president. McCain seems to throw out "I went to X and Y" and "We can't lose blah blah", but that doesn't tell me anything about what he wants to do as president. McCain was more trying to exude strength and assuredness rather than communicate how he's going to fix Afghanistan, Iraq, what have you. It's the same kind of jangling-of-the-keys sort of rhetoric that him and his party have been doing for years.
Obama came off, to me at least, as more thought out and reality-based than McCain. McCain also seemed more rattled by Obama than vice-versa. Obama also had an easier time keeping to the questions and his central points.
EDIT: A big one for me was McCain's constant badgering of "He doesn't understand blah blah blah" while not actually telling us why his position and what he plans to do is actually better than Obama's. He did this a lot after Obama would outline a relatively detailed view on something. Take his thoughts on on Pakistan/Aghanistan. Obama said that we need more troops in Afghanistan, but then said there had to be a more comprehensive plan as well, which he then laid out. McCain tried to say Obama didn't understand and we can't just send in more troops.
blah blah, something off-topic, Regan, military story, 3 decade old personal story about country that sucks worse than the US, blah, blah, insult.............

I think it was weak all around. Obama shouldve been more aggressive in attacking McCain.
During the economy segment, he shouldve said more on the conversative philosophy on deregulation, from Reagan to the Gramm. Not mentioning McCain's financial advisor was a mistake.
On the foreign policy segment, Obama shouldve mentioned McCain's opposition to the expanded GI bill.
I can see the low info voter thats not going to do a lot of double checking siding with McCain tonight.

This. This, this, fucking this.
I agree with this.
If you had a list of questions that you wanted answered from each person it would seem that Obama did his best to answer those.
Where as McCain just kinda talked about what he did back in the day, and how Obama just doesnt understand.

Obama did win.
Being as objective as possible. McCain targeted his opponent personally too often (and often incorrectly), used vague explanations/ sometimes none at all, used dying metaphors, used too many emotional appeals, and did not make clear conclusions to his assertions.
Winning a debate is not a matter of whether you agree with them its a matter of logic, clear and concise speech

I really agree with this. I think its a insult to Obama and the American people that a person can get as far has Obama has but you shouldnt vote for him because "he simply just doesnt understand."
If you are going to discredit a persons entire life and eduction it needs to be with a statement a little stronger than, "He doesnt understand." Because I am pretty sure I learned defense in middle school.

there nothing wrong with conceding when an opponent makes a point, actually that positive point towards winning a debate as long as one establishes how one is different when coming to an argument and solving it.

I don't get how people are saying McCain won, when a large portion of what he said was not true from Obama's positions to his own advisor's positions to historical facts....
Not only that but McCain is trying to say that he is a Maverick and can cross party lines, but less than 5 minutes after the debate he attacks Obama for agreeing with 3 or so of McCain's fundamental points?
And how dare Obama bring up how McCain has voted, and his support for Bush, or his statements made within the last month, or the fact that McCain was making things up, and visually upset about someone lying about him no less!! What a terrible person defending himself, and using someone's actions and words to disprove what they are saying.....what a jerk...

10:01 CDT: [Nate] Independents in the MediaCurves focus group gave the debate to Obama 61-39. They also think he won every individual segment. Republicans gave the debate to McCain 90-10, Democrats to Obama 93-7.
9:55 CDT: [Nate] Obama moved up 3 points in the Iowa Electronic Markets, but lost 3 points on Intrade. Given the funny business we've seen on Intrade lately, you'll know which of those two indicators I'd tend to trust.
Seems like independents have a liberal bias.

But I don't feel like Obama was aggressive enough. All I wanted was for him to say "John, I'm over here. honestly, while obama presented his "answers" much better than mccain, te debate was nothing more than mud wrestling between wwe divas. so much garbage spewed from each others mouths. ill just wait for factcheck.org to sort it all out. on the brith side, i am super drunk....
factcheck.org 's prelimanary debate info (itll probably get bigger in the coming days)
* Obama said McCain adviser Henry Kissinger backs talks with Iran “without preconditions,” but McCain disputed that. In fact, Kissinger did recently call for “high level” talks with Iran starting at the secretary of state level and said, “I do not believe that we can make conditions.” After the debate the McCain campaign issued a statement quoting Kissinger as saying he didn’t favor presidential talks with Iran.
* Obama denied voting for a bill that called for increased taxes on “people” making as little as $42,000 a year, as McCain accused him of doing. McCain was right, though only for single taxpayers. A married couple would have had to make $83,000 to be affected by the vote, and anyway no such increase is in Obama’s tax plan.
* McCain and Obama contradicted each other on what Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen said about troop withdrawals. Mullen said a time line for withdrawal could be “very dangerous” but was not talking specifically about “Obama’s plan,” as McCain maintained.
* McCain tripped up on one of his signature issues – special appropriation “earmarks.” He said they had “tripled in the last five years,” when in fact they have decreased sharply.
* Obama claimed Iraq “has” a $79 billion surplus. It once was projected to be as high as that. It’s now down to less than $60 billion.
* McCain repeated his overstated claim that the U.S. pays $700 billion a year for oil to hostile nations. Imports are running at about $536 billion this year, and a third of it comes from Canada, Mexico and the U.K.
* Obama said 95 percent of “the American people” would see a tax cut under his proposal. The actual figure is 81 percent of households.
* Obama mischaracterized an aspect of McCain’s health care plan, saying “employers” would be taxed on the value of health benefits provided to workers. Employers wouldn’t, but the workers would. McCain also would grant workers up to a $5,000 tax credit per family to cover health insurance.
* McCain misrepresented Obama's plan by claiming he'd be "handing the health care system over to the federal government." Obama would expand some government programs but would allow people to keep their current plans or chose from private ones, as well.
* McCain claimed Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower had drafted a letter of resignation from the Army to be sent in case the 1944 D-Day landing at Normandy turned out to be a failure. Ike prepared a letter taking responsibility, but he didn’t mention resigning.

Did anyone notice that Obama called McCain "Jim" instead of "John" at least twice? Given that Obama has already paraphrased the Rock once (for those that don't watch wrestling, while he and the other candidates were on WWE Raw, he uttered the now famous words "Do you smell what Barack is cooking?") in my mind, I witnessed this exchange between the two....
Obama: Blah blah blah Jim...
McCain: My name's Jo....
Obama: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS!

Ramstoria, that sounds about right. If I came away from one thing in watching the debates it was that both of them were mischaracterizing each other - badly. I guess maybe that's a tactic, because most American's won't fact check, but it's disappointing nonetheless.

Well, in fairness, McCain fought in the Revolutionary War, the Mexican-American War, and he once was denied Viagra in Toronto, so he still considers those hostile nations.
Did anyone notice that Obama called McCain "Jim" instead of "John" at least twice?
The debate was moderated by Jim Lehrer of PBS. So there were a couple times when Obama was addressing both Lehrer and McCain. I think there was one occasion when he may have addressed McCain as Jim, though. Not really a big deal.
The more interesting thing to me was the fact Obama consisently addressed McCain by his first name, while McCain stuck to the traditional "Senator Obama" or "my opponent." This may have been a deliberate tactic to fluster and irritate McCain who obviously places a lot of emphasis on seniority, rank, title, etc. How dare this young whippersnapper address me by my first name? And historically, we've never seen first names used in a debate before. But I think this had more to do with how Obama consistently interacts with people on a human level. At the surface level, this seems disrespectful, but if you look at the tone of the debate, Obama was much more concessionary, respectful, and honorific of McCain than McCain was of Obama, as McCain spent most of his time telling Obama how much he didn't know or didn't understand.
