I didn't see a thread on this so here's one. Looks like Grandia to my eyes off hand. Gonintendo and a lot of the Kotaku and other blog style sites have this stuff disapear off the front page quickly so I've gathered a lot of the stuff I could find on this game and put it here.


plot:
Arc Rise Fantasia is set in the empire of Meridian. Creatures called "Contaminant Dragons" are causing a lot of trouble as they pass the Meridian in flocks. If one is killed, the resulting explosion poisons the local area. When the empire receives word that a massive horde has its sights on the capital of Diamant, it immediately sends out an army to fight them, including Bright, a cool and collected novice mercenary, and his friend Alse, the beloved prince and second in line for the throne. Bright is severely injured during the battle, but is saved by a girl named Ryphia, who has secrets in her past and possesses the power to control "ley squalls," naturally-occurring storms of magic that usually take the form of luminous rain.

Arc Rise Fantasia for Nintendo Wii was one of the most surprisingly good games I sampled during the entire convention. The graphics and music are adequate, but that is not what will grab you. It is the combat that sets this game apart from so many other RPG titles out there. By allocating AP points among team members, you have the freedom to focus on one or more characters at a time, creating awesome single-character combos and team special attacks with fantastic effects. Magic and special attacks are very pretty, and the use of distance and position to complicate attack combos and defense adds depth to the traditional turn-based experience. The release date is still not set, though it will come out some time in 2009 in Japan and North America with no confirmed European release.

I like how all but one of them has no dialogue, and the one picture that has dialogue in it has such an incredibly generic statement that there's no way to tell the quality of the translation from it.

I think Ignition did that on purpose.

Exactly the point. I almost blew a coronary when they announced Ignition, whose translations are stuck in the early 90s, was taking the publishing rights from XSeed, who does excellent localizations. I was hoping they would up their low standards for this, but the new screens don't give me any hope.

I could only get through 30 seconds of one of the cutscene videos before switching it off. I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to voice acting, but that was just... bad. Poor direction, no emotion, poor line reading. That kind of voice "acting" give flashbacks to the dubs of Castle Shikigami 2 and RAD: Robot Alchemic Drive.

I've already been through the lousy localization adventure on Wii already -- Opoona. That localization was so sloppy some of the dialogue responses were actually incorrect to what you answered. Somehow, though, Opoona managed to be charming enough to overcome that deficiency. We can hope (I repeat, hope) that such is the case here.

Also, I didn't see this mentioned, but both Amazon and GameStop have preorder bonuses on this game. Amazon has a pack of character profile cards and GameStop has some sort of art cell.

Opoona didn't have voice acting though. Yes, the translation (there was no localization, really) was incredibly piss poor but at least there were no voices. So glad someone else played that game, it's excellent.

I was thinking I might as well, but I still can't help but get somewhat steamed when I see how Ignition has ruined yet another fine title with their beyond shoddy choice in voices. It may sound harsh, but the Japanese need to stop hiring them for the sake of protecting what consumers think of their games; The game is simply not enjoyable in this state.

Instead of suffering through an otherwise belting game, I would rather get around to learning Japanese and enjoy the game to its fullest. The seiyus of Japan have done this game great honor as I am sure many have heard from the trailers, and Ignition has brought North America nothing but shame.

I am however keeping my preorder to get that laser cell, and then I am shoving that game right back in the employee's hands for a refund. Well, not right away, but the day after most probably.

Mix of old school RPG with Tales (good), infrequent save points and terrible voice acting (bad) - two of the actors sound like non-native speakers (because they are!). I'll add some more details whenever I stop playing MH.

Since this is Ignition we're talking about, the phrase "eh, we paid for the whole hour/day" comes to mind, and wouldn't surprise me. If the Japanese voice acting is decent, I would've preferred the Muramasa treatment. So ridiculous that we can't even choose Japanese VA with subtitles.

I wonder how fast this will drop though. I had (well, still have, but reconsidering) it pre-ordered for $25, but I don't know now.

I'd imagine that when an American company goes to Japan to get something localized from Japanese, you're probably looking at Japanese people doing the work. And yes, it's that awesome.

It was the Tales feel and art style that originally gripped me to this game, and it was the story and quite nice Japanese voice acting that kept me tuned. If it still had the Japanese voice acting it would be perfect in my eyes and worthy of a day one pickup, as it truly is worth every vocal note; You can hear it below for yourself.

But Ignition will probably tell them it's just a niche game that doesn't sell well in the US and Marvelous won't do the research on their own, and let them take another game from XSeed (as with Muramasa). Also, that fuckwad Shane Bettenhausen specifically told GAF that they "learned their lesson" from Lux-Pain and Nostalgia and this game would be getting the royal treatment. I certainly hope that they allow Atlus to grab hold of Luminous Arc 3 Eyes. They probably will since the first and second have both hit the states and can be considered a worthy series in their eyes for the increase of revenue.

Hopefully one day they can recuperate, and thusly give their games what they need most once more; Proper localizing teams. It would be a great loss to the gaming community for Marvelous Entertainment to go under. Perhaps they can team up with another video game development division to stay afloat.

Edit: Look at me talking as if they're all ready dead. One poor localization doesn't always spell a downfall, so I'd like to take a moment to apologize to anyone from Marvelous Entertainment who might ever read this. Playing Vesperia again is a good thing. Honestly though at first I was very excited for this game. It looked very promising to me. Then seeing the trailers and who localized the game made me very weary...

Guess I will wait to see people's impressions before purchase. I honestly am anticipating that it will not sell well and be discounted rather quickly. Which honestly is not good for us RPG gamers. The more localized games that come and sell like shit the less we are going to get. :cry:

After playing Star Ocean the Last Hope, I don't think I will pick this game up even on clearance. Star Ocean has such an awful script and VAs that I want to throw my controller every time I read or hear something. The VAs especially are absolute garbage and make the game a terrible experience to play through (though I'm doing it since I spent money on it). Okay, so I've played about 1.5 hours.

The voice acting isn't so bad to the point it makes your ears bleed but the script makes it exponentially worse.

Also, the voices don't fit the characters. Ryfia's voice acting is worst of the bunch thus far.

Blah story.
Combat is whatever.
Has many similarities with the Tales franchise.

The only thing I find relatively interesting is the tetris like accessories you can equip to your weapons to beef them up.

Currently stuck at the second Deathchanter boss battle. Probably need to grind a couple levels. I thought it was too easy up until now.

Anyway, about 3.5 hours in. Going slow and talking to everyone. I reached the guild and completed one quest and all but one disappeared. WTF. I should have added them all to active quests.

This game isn't bad. Just feels a little generic. Script + Voice acting make for a really bad combination.

I think it is a pass until it drops from $40 to maybe about $20. Been reading the gamespot forums and some people have gauged a rushed playthrough at about 25-30 hours without doing extra stuff.

I haven't even heard anything about New Game + or high levels of difficulty.

Issues such as the bad dub (+ lame script?) and 16:9 ONLY aspect ratio (where's the love?) make this game not worth the retail price.

The game is good fun. Really, the fundmentals -- combat, equipment, etc. -- are very sound and there are no random battles. The story is convoluted but that's nothing new for JRPGs.

As for the voice acting... it's pretty mediocre, but it's not *quite* as bad as the trailers suggest. It's no worse than the first Baten Kaitos, which means that I only cringe some of the time rather than all the time. :)
