REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 1, 2008 — Microsoft Corp. today announced that Zune, the company’s end-to-end music and entertainment service, will introduce the Zune “Gears of WarŪ 2” Special Edition 120GB device with pre-orders going live today in the U.S. at Amazon.com and Walmart.com. The special edition devices will also be available online at Amazon.ca, BestBuy.ca, FutureShop.ca and TheSource.ca in Canada, for an estimated retail price of $279.991 (U.S./CDN) and will begin shipping to customers starting Nov. 7.

In celebration of the sequel to one of the best-selling Xbox franchises of all time, Xbox and Epic Games Inc. have collaborated with Zune to create this unique portable media player. The Zune “Gears of War 2” Special Edition is based on the new Zune 120GB device and features a laser-etched Crimson Omen on the new gloss black enclosure, collectible “Gears of War” packaging, and 244 pieces of “Gears of War” media including the original game soundtrack, behind-the-scenes videos, game trailers and concept art galleries.

“This special edition Zune is a great way for ‘Gears of War’ fans to carry around all their music and videos while sharing their enthusiasm for the game,” said Michael Capps, president of Epic Games.

“Gears of War 2” is developed by Epic Games exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, and will be available worldwide on Nov. 7. “Gears of War 2” is the highly anticipated sequel to one of the most popular Xbox games in history, and is poised to be the biggest entertainment phenomenon of the 2008 holiday season.

I actually like the look of the skull. Very tempting, but not for $280..too much for me.

Yeah, it is a bit pricey, but a standard 120GB Zune is $250 basically, so for another $30 you can get one that is etched and comes with some preloaded Gears items. Probably only for people looking for a new MP3 player though. I've already got mine pre-ordered cause I wanted 120GB Zune anyways, might as well get some Gears content and etching as well.

I was gonna upgrade my 4gb to a 12gb as I outgrew the 4gb waaaay faster than I thought i would.
Seeing this is totally sweet but another $30.00?? Tempting...I have to meditate on it.

Yes you can. Go to settings and there's a option in there. But w/ touch activated, it still can using the clicking feature. The touchpad isn't super sensitive so it won't go crazy on you if you touch the left "arrow" and click it.

But...dammit! I just bought a 120GB Zune last week w/ Best Buy store credit (returned my 30GB Zune bundle), gift cards and used some reward zone certificates. So really no chance of me getting this...can't argue w/ almost free.

But is all the content a combination of:

1. stuff you can download on LIVE?
2. stuff that comes in the collector's edition of the game?
3. possibly stuff from the LE strategy guide?

It'd be nice to have all this but I'm buying the Amazon Lancer w/ LE and the LE guide anyway. Probably the only thing I'd really be missing, besides the Gears logo on my Zune, is the soundtrack.

Agree, if it drops by about 50% I would jump all over this. I actually recently got a Sansa Fuze and the thing works GREAT. Great sound quality. I would basically get this to store more music....but I like my fuze.

I doubt it will drop below $250 anytime before the regular 120GB Zune's do. The lowest it will probably go quickly is down to the standard price point of the 120GB Zune. Once those start dropping the Gears of War 2 version one will probably drop with it.

Any chance that these are going to go to Gamestop? I really need something to use my GS credit on and this is a good thing.

I'm an iPod man. Listening to the Giant Bombcast on my iPhone right now. :)
I have been thinking about buying a cheap Zune to try it's $15/month music subscription thing since iTunes doesn't have that. I would buy a GoW 8 GB one, but I don't want 120 GB one at all.

Are you talking about Squaretrade? They do warranty for Amazon purchases and have a pretty good record I thought.

Couldn't find the Gears 2 Zune anywhere on the walmart site after following the link.

They moved it into it's proper place so the link changed a little. Should be good again now.

The regular Zune is $240 and has been for ages.

I considered a Zune last week when I needed a new player (manly just 'cause it's fun to try something new), but the software is still way too primitive for what I need. No good way to have my audiobooks remember their location, no way to edit stuff once it's on the Zune, or play content on it through your computer, etc.

When I checked the prices all around the retail places online like Circuity City and Best Buy it was showing $249.99 for the 120GB Zune. That's what I was placing my $250 mark at. That and, I'm pretty sure the 120GB Zune's were released on 9/16/2008. Straight from the Microsoft website on that date. Have you used the new Zune 3.0 software? There have been quite a few fixes on it. I no longer have my Zune so I can't test to see if those have been fixed or not.

I personally can't use the iPod anymore because with their standard software I can't bring my music back to my PC from it. That was the main reason I switched. Again, just personal preference really.
