"Fellaciate?"
It means to "felate oneself while sticking as many fingers as possible up your bum as possible and sniffing them"

Unless the Wii is updated to support SDHC there is still only a 2GB cap which isn't a whole lot IMO

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oboro_Muramasa_YoutoudenHeh. The very first thing I thought when I saw that was, "Hey, that's a funny looking Odin Sphere..."
Badass. This sure as hell exceeded my expectations. Of course, I expected the whole thing to basically just be Iwata stepping out on stage and saying, "Dear investors. Enjoy the enormous bag of money that is under your seat. If you need more, we've left a solid gold prostitute in each and every one of your hotel rooms that can melted into bullion should the need arise. Thank you, and goodnight."

While I highly doubt this, it would be nice if the NoA conference revealed some different information. For example - who is publishing The Conduit. That was promised to us weeks ago.

This conference will make or break the hardcore gamer support for the Wii and Nintendo knows it. They know they need to get the hardcore interested in the Wii soon or they'll lose out on that smaller(yet very profitable) market to the 360 or the PS3.Nintendo had it's hand forced by how bad the E3 reaction was. Look at how Iwata apologized for how bad their E3 presser was for core gamers and the way Miyamoto announced Pikmin 3 so matter-of-factly, it was all because of the negative reactions they got from the core market. I believe Nintendo knows they have to give the core fan-base something to look forward to tonight/tomorrow or the reaction for this event will be even worse than E3.
I said the above earlier and I think Nintendo delivered enough tonight to avoid a repeat of the E3 reaction they got. Good job Nintendo. Now on to the U.S. event.

Hmmm. Curious. If you watch Animal Crossing, the little characters have dialogue bubbles appearing over their heads.
I wonder why that is given the Wii Speak feature? Probably like the Brawl taunt system for people who don't get WS.

Comparing Nintendo's E3 and this conferences, this one gets a 15/10 by comparison. In actuality, it gets a 7.5/10 because I think some stuff is lost in translation, and a good chunk of stuff won't hit here.
I really want to see something cool at the American event tomorrow for us US Nintendo fans, like say...2d Metroid game for the DS or Wii Ware. Four Swords Adventures on Wii Ware with 4-player Wifi with WiiSpeak support.

Well, it's been a fun conference everyone. Though those few minutes before the conference were touch-n-go, we ended up getting plenty of excellent announcements, new game revealings, and confirmations. More than enough to keep both DS and Wii fans satisfied until 2009 comes around. It was fun going through the updates on Gemaga, and then checking IGN, GameKyo, and Kotaku for clarification. Everyone, thanks for following along in the topic during the whole event, and I hope that the San Francisco event tomorrow will also be good. (Though from the sound of things, Nintendo was using the Tokyo event for the big announcements, with the US event serving as a demo center) Well, time to update the OP.
Definitely can't wait for:
Punch-Out!
Endless Ocean 2
Trace Memory R
Sin and Punishment 2
Cosmic Walker
Taiko no Tatsujin

 but really..
Of all the stuff they could have picked, they chose a boxing game...
If there's nothing new for the American side, its just a big disappointment. Nothing new coming out can or has matched the games from a year or two ago.
Combined with the massive resell value and the inevitable redesign, it just makes it even more tempting to get rid of the thing. I literally have 6 Wii games, and that's simply because those are the only games I consider high enough quality to be worth my time when comparing it to the PC or 360. Now those 6 games are great, so great that I think its worth having a Wii just for those 6, but 6 games in 24 months? Come on now. I would love to buy some new Wii games, but without the quality nintendo stuff like a new mario, zelda, kirby, starfox, etc. coming out any time soon, I just don't see it happening.

Is this the Wii game you were talking about, Strell? From what I can tell of the katakana, it's called Supaan Smasher or something like that.
Edit: IGN (http://wii.ign.com/articles/915/915504p1.html)seems to have collected a list of the games in the montage:
Games shown in the above montage: Let's Tap from SEGA. 428 from SEGA. Family Ski World Ski and Snowboard from Namco / Bandai. Karaoke Joysound from Hudson. Taiko no Tatsujin Wii from Namco / Bandai. Tenchu 4 from From Software. Harvest Moon: Waku Waku Animal March from Marvelous. Rune Factory Frontier from Marvelous. And Shape Boxing Wii de Enjoyment by Rocket Company.
The montage also shows 2009 games from Nintendo: Wii Sports Resort. Punch-Out!! Another Code: R. Supaan Smasher. Dynamic Shin (working title). Tact of Magic. Kensakusu. Cosmic Walker (this game already looks amazing). Sin and Punishment 2. Forever Blue: Beautiful Ocean. NHK Quiz. And Line Attack Heroes. We repeat: these are all Wii games from Nintendo.

Hm, if they fix the turrible pathing in FFCC:EoT, I would be happy to pick that up.
Punchout could be cool with the improved Wiimotion add-on.

Punch-Out, Sin And Punishment 2.
I guess I should clarify that I was talking about the E3 vs. October conference.
I wonder if this was their plan all along however? Leave E3 alone and move all of their important announcements to October to increase hype and interest right before the holiday season. I can't say I agree with what they did at the E3 conference, but it would make sense to have important stuff near the end of the year in most likely the biggest shopping season.
I do question the DS not being released in the US before the holidays...

I have a feeling the whole DL to SD card is just that.... Download... you'll probably still have to copy games to internal memory to play them... considering Nintendo's previous statements on copying them back & forth...

I'm so glad they included Chibi Robo in the "Enjoy with Wii" series. If they're revisiting GC greats, I wish they'd update Luigi's Mansion...or make an honest-to-god sequel...for the Wii.

Well the Lite launched in June and still sold like hot cakes, maybe they aren't worried. They're probably just going to bank on Wiis and Wii Fits this holiday since there doesn't seem like anything special coming.

They should really put Pikmin 1 & 2 together, as well as Metroid Prime 1 & 2. Although it looks like they won't. At least not for Pikmin (probably because Pikmin 2 is rare as hell). MP1&2 in the same package would be awesome.

They had better do this Punch-Out right, since they seem to be content to only give us one per decade.

(Without reading this whole thread first, so apologies if this has been discussed...)
Can someone explain what is "new" about the SD card storage announcement? You can already copy VC games to an SD card. And I understand that this announcement didn't say anything about being able to play them straight off the card rather than just using it as backup storage.
So what is it that was announced that's different from what we already know?

I assume for now that the "download to SD card" statement is a mistranslation, and they really do mean that games are playable directly from the SD card.
If not and they've only removed (or improved) the encryption techniques during the transfer to make them faster, I will be very disappointed in this so called "solution".
In any case, hopefully further clarification will be given at the press conference today in the US, so we'll have to wait and see.

NoA's turn
9:11: I'm sure a couple of you have read the news from Tokyo last night, Kaigler says. Yes. She introduces Reggie Fils-Aime to talk to us about that.
9:12: While today's show is mostly about games, Fils-Aime says, Nintendo unveiled the DSi last night. He holds one up. He's talking about the new features: It has built-in flash memory, and you can save downloadable games to that flash drive. A new service called Nintendo DSi Shop. Among the first games available on the Nintendo DSi Shop service will be redesigned versions of the two Brain Age games. Users will be able to experience these games anywhere, anytime, moments a day, every day. Will sit alongside all the features on the DSi menu, no cartridges necessary.
9:14: There are plenty of other competitors in a "red ocean" trying to make the best portable cameras and music players. Nintendo is just trying to make the DS the most fun for the most people possible.
9:15: The Nintendo DSi has not one but two different cameras. How you use these two cameras creates the difference. One will face forward from the hardware, the other points back at the user. A different range of photo functionality. Combined with onboard, real-time imaging software. Combine pictures. Distort faces. Graffiti.
9:16: The DSi can also serve as your music player -- but again, with differences. The DSi will use the AAC format, so you can move songs from computer to SD card. The DSi has built in software that allows the user to control pitch, speed of AAC files. You can put in an audio filter -- "You may have a piece of music where you want to listen to only the vocals, not the instrumentals." You can fast-forward through a podcast. Play different features sped up or slowed down. Record your voice in the microphone and change the playback speed/pitch of that. All of these options are available on DSi right out of the box.
9:18: Wanted to manage the weight and durability of the system while making it smaller. Hence, no Game Boy Advance game slot. (Still kind of sad.) This new addition to the DS family, says Fils-Aime, should be looked at as retaining great features and adding new functionality to make it a whole lot better.
9:19: As far as 2008 is concerned, the DSi story is strictly Japan-related. We will not see the product in North America until "well into" 2009, because there's still "huge demand"
9:20: Reggie says that the DS sold more hardware in August than had ever been sold in that calendar month. You're welcome (http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/09/npd-nintendo-ds.html), Reggie!
9:21: Instead of dealing with the current hassles of Wii storage, you'll be able to download Wii software from the shopping channel to your SD card, and the process of transferring that software will become "dramatically easier."
9:22: Talking about holiday retail qualities for DS and Wii. "More Nintendo DS units into retail for Oct/Nov/Dec quarter than last year -- dramatically more." Also more Wii systems.
9:23: Will this be enough to meet demand? "Talk to me in January," Fils-Aime says. They are working hard to get to "the crossover" between supply and demand. They are in "uncharted territory" as far as how much hardware they're moving.
9:24: Cammie Dunaway takes the stage. "If I've learned anything in the past 11 months, it's that pleasing you guys takes showing you great games," she says while looking directly at me and Matt Cassamassina.
9:25: PUNCH OUT! CAMMIE SHOWS PUNCH-OUT. CAMMIE REDEEMED FOREVER. Available 1st half 2009 in the U.S. Punch out video reel. Oh my god, the music. The music. So awesome.

DS is selling well so we won't get the bigger better one till we stop buying the older one?
And they still didn't clarify whether you're able to play directly off of the SD card or not, as it is, this sounds like they're just making it faster. If they were to take the Emulators out of all of the games that we buy on there, it'll be a much smaller strain on the internal memory.

It's not like the story from either one really leaves the door open for an obvious sequal after all, and a Wii Hotel Dusk would've been amazing. Ok, let's get the disappointment out of the way now.
This is Nintendo we're talking about. Further, it is Nintendo of America, specifically.
These are the same people who - when asked about Club Nintendo relentlessly for the last several years - responded with "Oh, America is too big for us to adequately do the Club." As stupid as that sounded, it was made all the more stupid based on the fact that - recently - it's been suggested that the UK market is going to surpass the American one, even though the Club exists there already.
Now, given that astounding level of incompetence on the issue, do you guys really expect them to make this retroactive? Hell, I'm betting it's not even a timing thing - it'll be a product thing. So, for example, Wii Music MIGHT be included, but Wii Play/Mario Kart/Brawl/etc won't be.
Like I said, get the disappointment out of the way now. It'll make you feel better. Me? I'm already nailed toothpicks into my balls. The pain is slowly subsiding.
I'm not jumping for joy for the Club Nintendo announcement just yet. Wasn't Europe's version completely nerfed? Yay! I can now download official Mario wallpaper!!! Unless they start showing prizes I'm skeptical. I have quite a few unregistered games and a DS because it was so pointless. I really hope they get this right.
I was really curious as to what Cing and AlphaDream were up to after not hearing anything after E3. Glad to hear they're working on new projects.

All of a sudden, I'm glad the only "game" I have registered is Twilight Princess. I probably have 15 Nintendo games that I could register once its actually up and running. I imagine we'll hear details within the next couple of weeks or so considering that this is supposed to be ready by the holidays.
I have a suspicion that this will be somewhere between Europe/Japan Club Nintendo. We might get a few of the little goodies that Japan has, but also receiving the influx of non-rewards that Europe has as well. Even if it is as bad as Europe, I guess something is better than nothing, and it'll be nice to convert stars to Wii Nintendo points.

Looks good. It is a brilliant idea - the Gamecube is one of my favorite consoles of all time with so many great games that never got the recognition they deserved. If they bring the same games out for the bigger Wii audience with widescreen and wiimote support they are going to rake it in... even more than they are already raking it in. This would position them nicely for the WiiHD or whatever comes next since people will have actually played some of the key franchises. They are in a unique position too because it's not like you can release a PS2 game for the PS3 and get away with it since people expect more out of a PS3 game in the looks department...

Yeah, it would be nice if the SD solution was the "official" Nintendo solution while they quietly enable USB hardrives as well (like their initial stealth keyboard support).
Anything is better than what we have, provided that they allow us to run games from the SD card which I assume is the case.

Hell, being Nintendo, I'd imagine that with this stream of releases planned for the rest of the year into next, they figure that the "core gamer" will be happily buying so much crap (I know I will be) that we won't even need be worrying about something like that.
I think Nintendo looks at these conferences as their way of keeping us (the core gamers) off their backs for the time being. So they can get back to concentrating on the casual gamer market.
I also don't like that, after the announcements of their "storage solution", things are still up in the air as to how it actually works :-k
I reiterate, unless there's a HUGE speed issue running ANYTHING off the SD card, why do people keep asking for HDD support? A 2 gig SD card isn't expensive and has over 15000 blocks. Fifteen THOUSAND. If you're filling that up, then... wow. Just fucking wow.
... so, uh, is there a huge speed issue?

Even without the speed issue, I'm not sure if we can even play stuff off of the SD card or if they're just promising to help out with the fridge-cleaning.

Correct, everything that I've read states that they will be enabling the usage of the SD card slot to transfer the games over. We can already do this, I've read nothing beyond speculation that we're going to be able to play games off of it as well.

Sorry, guys, but I think we will just be using the SD card as storage for all games (copied directly to SD card), but then "loading" them off the SD card to play a game. That's the way I parse what was said. I hope I am wrong, but if it is something more than that then I would imagine Nintendo would have just stated that very clearly.
lilboo
10-02-2008, 10:55 PM
That doesn't make sense.
Why would you download a game DIRECTLY to storage?
When people download something NEW, they wish to use them immediately.
I agree, any expanded SD storage features (from what they are now) have to allow for playing off the card or it makes no sense.
Then again, non-sensical things do happen in these game company decision-making processes...

I hope that it is playing off the SD card (and that would be the best and make the most sense), but I think they were careful to avoid saying that in both press conferences. Homebrew has apparently done it, so I am hopeful, but I just didn't hear that said directly--and if it were the case, I don't see the reason to avoid saying it loud, clear, and unambiguously.

Hmm...everyone else is chiming in on the whole storage thing, so I'll throw in my two cents (since I am a Wii owner who is really annoyed by the storage thing and mostly been ignoring my Wii lately).
As has been pointed out, Nintendo has been too vague about the SD card thing for it to be what we all hoped for (i.e. playing directly off the SD card which homebrew has shown is completely possible).
The way it was phrased at the US conference as things will be "much easier" and that we can download straight to the SD card (which is ultimately pointless) makes me think it will be possibly some sort of automatic transfer thing where the Wii will load up all your games onto your Channels page including those stored on your SD card. Then when you choose the game if it is on the SD card the Wii will automatically transfer the game from the SD card into the system's memory and transfer something else back onto the SD card if space is needed.
So sort of a compromise (and one I'd almost be willing to live with, but I'd still probably gripe about it). Nintendo gets to force us only to play games from local memory, and we get freed from the hassle of manually swapping/redownloading games.
Not quite the solution we want, but it would certainly make the process of transfering games less annoying (we would just have to wait in a "loading into system memory" page for however long it takes, hopefully transder speed will be improved).

I'm pretty sure this is exactly how it will work. This is the way that Guitar Hero World Tour is going to work. You'll download the DLC that you purchase to an SD card and the game will seamlessly pull that data into the Wii's internal storage when you want to play it. Once you are done playing it, it erases it from the internal storage, freeing up the space again.
As stated above and elsewhere, speed is going to be the main issue here. Another issue that could arise is if you don't have enough free space on the Wii's internal storage to allow the copy to occur.
Either way, whether it is running the game from the SD card or pulling it into system memory to run it, it will be better than what we currently have.

From a Wired interview with Cammie Dunaway: (http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/10/post.html)
So on the new storage solution for Wii, let me see if I understand this correctly. You’re downloading games to an SD card.
Dunaway: So basically what we’re trying to do is make it easier for people. We know that there have been a lot of workarounds and a lot of steps to save to an SD card. So it’s a combination of making it an easier interface, not having to go through as many menus to do the saving and then enabling people to save a game that they want to buy from WiiWare directly to an SD card. It's saving to the SD card only. Good job of understand the problem Nintendo! :dunce:

Wired.com: Tell me about Club Nintendo. You made a small announcement about this — can you share any more details?
Dunaway: No more details. We’re still working out what all the prizes are going to be. We’d love to hear ideas from the fanbase about what kind of things they’d like to see included in Club Nintendo. You will be able to take over some of the points that you have in your current My Nintendo account. It won’t necessarily be all titles, but some Wii and DS titles. We want people to be able to start off with some points.Translation: Fuck you, Io.
Wired.com:We’ve got Club Nintendo in Europe and Japan, but in Europe it’s about virtual prizes like wallpapers. In Japan it’s physical goods. Is that what we’re looking at for America, the prizes?
Dunaway: It’s going to be a blend of both. Over the first year you’ll see more physical prizes. We’d like to figure out ways to get interesting digital prizes as well, but that’s more for phase two. If you have good ideas, shoot 'em to me.
EDIT: Reading that interview, I have to wonder just what exactly it is that Dunaway does at NoA.

Here's what it sounds like to me.
Now:
1. Move (or delete) game from system to make space.
2. Download new game onto system.
3. Play game.
After Nintendo's Fix:
1. Download new game onto SD card.
2. Move (or delete) game from system to make space.
3. Move new game onto system.
4. Play game.
Nintendo: Hay guyz, we fixed ur problem!
:dunce:
Anyway, I liked how Chris pushed about the lack of ports from Japan. Off the top of my head, I can think of several titles not here in the US: Captain Rainbow (Europe), Soma Bringer, Disaster: Day of Crisis (Europe), Professor Layton 2, Fatal Frame IV... what's up? Hell if I'm going to even touch the whole Mother 3/EB on VC issue. Sometimes I wonder...
And right, exactly what does Dunaway do? She's supposed to be PR but hardly even knows their own product(s).
Translation: Fuck you, Io.
D'oh! Though what she is saying is better than nothing (or only having titles released after the changes count). Looks like all those GC and GBA game registrations were for naught though... I mean, they could throw us some sort of bone - like a free VC title for those with 50 combined GC+GBA registrations. I'm just sayin'...

Hit the nail on the head. With surgical precision. Especially with the Sarah Palin bit.
Wii points would be very smart prizes. Like I've said before, I've heard lots of very unexciting things about Europe's club Nintendo. The very idea of wallpapers as prizes still offends me. It takes a lot less work to do a google search and right click fanmade Nintendo wallpapers. Plus we get can get the option of whether or not they contain nudity.
Damn I got tons of GBA and Gamecube games that won't get a single point? Thanks Nintendo

Ugh, I'm removing that part from the topic title. Though, I do hope that "significant revisions to the Wii system" means significantly improving transfer speeds, as per josh's scenario, to make this feature somewhat useful. Looking at what homebrew can do from the SD card, something tells me that the slow transfer speeds we have now is not a hardware issue.

It is a solution in Nintendo's eyes. It allows people to buy WiiWare or VC games when they have no space on their Wii. Something that was not possible before.
So basically they are allowing themselves to make money where in the past they may have lost sales due to people not wanting to go through the hassle of deleting shit just to play new shit.
So see, to Nintendo, this is a solution!
Seriously though, someone needs to call them on this shit. This might fly over in Japan, but NoA needs a nut-kicking wake up call. Stop letting NoJ call the shots when it comes to stuff they don't have the first fucking clue about.

This is true. It's a "solution" much in the same way that wrapping each VC ROM in its own emulator is a solution of how to put the ROM next to the emulator. Sure it works, but there's zero simplicity/elegance.

I read comments about the NOA/NOJ divide all the time around here. Is the idea that Japanese gamers don't care about storage issues? I would think that VC/WW is just as big over there as it is here. Is that not true?

- 1up has a good article on Cave Story, and why you should get it for WiiWare.
- Surprisingly, Destructoid and MTV enjoyed playing through some of Wii Music's modes this time.
- Joystiq has an odd... video of Boingz in their preview. Just watch it, you'll see what I mean a few seconds in. Looks like it might be good Wiiware title, though.

What problems? I played through the DS and the Wii games. The only problem I ever had was the difficulty :-(
I was talking about JUST the Wii games. First one, though good, was basically a DS rehash (when it could've been so much more) and the second Wii game was blazingly hard without an assisting surgeon (my opinion... it just felt like two player wasn't so much an option, but a requirement).
I've got no qualms with the DS ones.
Still curious about how well the second Wii one did, sales-wise... same with the second DS one.
