Well of course it works that way. Otherwise you could return 2 games and keep the free one. If you were thinking of buying placeholders then that is for exchanges not returns.

Ah, now I see my error. I've got to clarify with them whether or not it works for exchanges as well. I do seem to remember him saying that you've got to exchange it for a game that's been out during this week as well, but I can't quite remember.

This is the important point. Is it the employee who says you can only exchange it for a game that is out before the end date of the sale? Or is it the system itself?

It was the employee. He did mention something about the system saying that as well, but perhaps he was only using that as the excuse for why I wouldn't be able to return it.

I guess we'll need more people to attempt to return a single game (that was rung up as a placeholder for $59.99) using a gift receipt, specifically asking if they can exchange it for another game. However, most people are holding out for a game that is released after the sale. So we may not see any evidence until Sunday at the earliest. If you can't even exchange it for a game that is currently out, then we all all SOL (but that shouldn't be the case).

I really wish TRU had Lost Odyssey for 40 like everywhere else, I was hoping to buy

DMC4
Okami
Lost Odyssey

I can't find another game to replace lost odyssey. Oh well, I really dont need to be spending money right now. Plus I have a backlog of games I really need to get finished

There are some new clearance titles that are worth picking up. DDRs, Viva Pinata, Phoenix Wright 3, FF Tactics PSP, Castlevania: Dracula X PSP, etc.

I dunno about you guys, but my TRU is a run-down, dingy establishment staffed by friendly but disgruntled employees in apparently minimum wage jobs. Maybe the upscale, newer, successful ones care about these minor details, but after all these years of B2G1 sales, I've never had a problem doing an exchange weeks later. They don't even blink an eye.

It seems this way with any of the older TRU stores. When I was at college out of state I went to a similarly old, dingy TRU and had no problem exchanging later down the road either.

For some reason, I've never been denied a pricematch for the B2G1 at a Best Buy either. I guess it's because the TRUs I've been to are typically just blocks away from the Best Buys, but maybe the lower half of the Mason/Dixon is just more laid back.

I went for points cards this morning. They had 8 so I asked for four and told the lady I was going to leave the rest for others. She told me no one bought any yesterday and that I might as well grab them all because she has never sold a points card to someone. Who was I to argue? >:)

But I also got Wii Play (for the fourth controller), deBlob and Wario Shake It!. I'm not up to date on videogames, so I don't know if those were the best choices. I need to figure out what I might have wanted more. Also, I got home and remembered that the wireless adapter, Wii Zapper and Perfect shot were on sale today too. I might venture back this afternoon, but probably not... :P

That's awesome for you. Running into employees/managers who have that "holier than thou" attitude is always a downer. Especially if you try to act like you know more than they do (and in most cases, CAGers actually do know more than the majority of employees, although this thread is making me think otherwise...).

Try and return one of them and see what happens. I bet you get either $40 back, or told that you need to return all three at once.

Just because the register is showing the three games at $59.99 / $59.99 / $0 doesn't mean that when you return them, they end up being return value of $40 / $39.99 / $39.99 , which is the same $119.98 as $59.99 twice.
for 1, when using a gift receipt, they have no way in knowing you bought the b2g1 free deal so how would they expect you the consumer to pay a difference in price for a game that is the same price as another game. I will be doing this at the end of the day after work but like i stated before, for all they know i'm a customer that got a game as a gift with receipt. Even if it doesn't work, i had already bought those games at other store so i will be returning them to get my money back

For 1, yes they do know because your whole purchase pops up on their screen when they scan your cute little Gift Receipt bar code. And 2, no you aren't a customer who got this as a gift. Do you know how many years TRU has been doing this? They are down with people trying to rip them off. Some will be generous with returns, some have to protect their... assets.

Don't get me wrong, I've done the return thing too because I have had to get placeholders for the games I TRUly wanted. But they have the right not to be taken advantage of. It sucks, but it's true. So don't make claims you can't back up and when someone gives you advice, come back arguing. The fact is, when you buy the games they show one as free. But when you try and turn one back in for ca$h, they are either going to send you packing or only give you a 1/3 of the value of what you paid for the total deal.

And besides, what do you care if you are only going to return the games to other stores anyhow? You really do sound like you are running a scam when you run yourself in circles like you did.

So yesterday i went to TRU located in franklin mills mall in pa just outside philly. I picked up the last two wii points cards and 3 games...Madden 09 (placeholder), fracture (placeholder), and Star Wars:the force unleashed. I also asked for gift receipts just in case.
After reading today, I started to get nervous if the idea would work, so I called and asked to speak to the manager.

I talked to the store manager-she said they way her store handles exchanges is simple. as long as you have a receipt, the game is sealed, and it is within 45 days you CAN exchange the game for any other game- regardless of when it is released.
I even verified and said Gears 2 and call of duty 5 come out the beginning of november, will i be able to exchange for them...and the answer was ABSOLUTELY YES!!!
She even said you can exchange the "free" game for another one as long as it is sealed!

So there you have it...the TRUE story is out, this maybe be only this locations policy, but just call and ask, it wont hurt! :)

Ultimately, this is the IDEAL situation, but it won't be true for every person and every store. Completely YMMV. But for people who said this won't work for anyone at all, you're wrong.

Returning for credit is different than exchanging for another game. Exchanging for another game is what most of us in this thread care about.

Would anyone be kind enough to sell me a 2000 point card code at cost ($12 or whatever it is with tax if that is applicable). I don't have a Toys R Us near me, and toysrus.com is clearly not going to be getting any more in by the end of tonight since it's been out of stock every time I've checked.

I have a confirmed paypal address and I don't mind if you just message me the code (I'd prefer it actually) to save on shipping. Please message me if anyone is interested in doing this.

Thanks!

Hey guys I don't know what I need to do in my situation. I'm looking to get the Socom Bundle, Rock band 2 (disc), and Guitar Hero World 2 (disc) all worth 60 dollars for the PS3. Rock band 2 and Guitar Hero come out after the sale but I read about the placeholder thing. So I buy the Socom Bundle during the sale, buy 2 random $60 games as placeholders, and exchange the placeholders 1 by 1 for the games I want on their release dates. I would have to specifically ask them to get Socom for free. Or will this not work?

Just hold on to the Socom game while they ring up the other two.
Tell 'em to ring Socom in last.
If it doesn't show up as free on receipt,
immediately fix or return all 3 right there.

Yes, this is important. I mentioned doing a placeholder and the manager said it'd be ok at that TRU but other TRU stores might not be as lenient.

Anyway, I picked up 2 Wii point cards, a Wii classic controller, The Force Unleashed, Mario Kart Wii, and Guitar Hero On Tour (free).

Not a bad deal even though they didn't have the game I really wanted (Silent Hill: Homecoming) and wouldn't have Dead Space for a week or so after release date. That's when the placeholder will be put into place.

I was wondering if release dates on tru.com coincided with B&M TRUs. I ask because TRU.com has Dead Space coming out next week but we all know that the game comes out this week. Does this mean that the game will not be available at the B&M TRU?

I was slightly annoyed that my TRU store had sold all their stock of cards to one guy, but in the end it actually worked out to be a better deal.

Originally, I had picked up these titles:

Final Fantasy IV DS
Kirby Super Star Ultra (Gift)
SimCity Creator.

Total: $65.38.

I get home, and realized I forgot to pick up a classic controller AND I still have a receipt from Kirby Super Star Ultra from BestBuy. So I make the trek back to TRU and exchange SimCity Creator DS for another copy of Kirby Super Star (associate had to void the transaction and re-ring up all three since SimCity Creator was my free title).

Next, went to BestBuy and made the return for a gift card valued at $27.24.

During lunch today, I checked with the nearest BestBuy store to see if they would match the TRU 40% off deal with no luck. On home from work, checked on another store that did offer the deal, and picked up 3 2000 point cards using the gift card.

To sum it up:

Final Fantasy IV DS
Kirby Superstar Ultra
3 2000 Wii Points Cards

Total spent: $77.35.

Through GiftCards that worked instantly . So I got the games I wanted over the next week or so without any of the hassle Dead Space $50, Saints Row 2 $50, Little Big Planet $45, Fable 2 $45 so yeah I spent $190 for 4 games but I got what I wanted, not hqaving to deal with TRU? Priceless.

Stopped by Toys R Us (Omaha, NE) and they were out of Wii Points Cards, and I couldn't really find 3 games I wanted to buy that I don't already have.

Decided to stop by Best Buy to attempt a price match on the Wii Points Cards, after getting denied initially, they chased me down (browsing Wii games) and told me they would allow it after all because they called the other Toys R Us in town and they had Wii Points Cards in stock. Yay!! I just got two because I didn't want them to get super pissed if I bought a ton after fighting with them to get the pricematch. Ha...

My initial plan:

$20 NDS - Space Invaders Extreme
$20 PSP - N+
*Free Game - Wii Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams collection
$14 Wii 2000 points card
$14 Wii 2000 points card
$14 Wii 2000 points card

Total is $82 - ($10 of $75 purchase coupon) = $72 * 1.07525 (tax) = $77.42
Excluding points cards the average price per game comes to around $12

*Still undecided, also debating on Dead Rising, Mercenaries, Shadow of the Collosus, Hotel Dusk or RE:4 (Wii)

What actually happened (actual price with coupon in [ ] ):

No points cards left, argghh, so....

$20 NDS - Space Invaders Extreme [$17.31]
$20 PSP - N+ [$17.31]
Free > None of my $20 games were there so I picked up Rachet Deadlocked for the PS2, ehh

$10 PSP Castlevania Cronicles [$8.38]
$10 GCN Madden 08 [$8.38]
Free > PS2 DDR Supernova 2

$5 PS2 PES 2007 [$4.31]
$5 360 Perfect Dark Zero [$4.31]
Free > PS2 Getaway: Black Monday (Couldn't find anything else in this price range)

Final total came to $72 with a $6 cabbage patch toy filler for my daughter

ok so everyone keeps asking bout the gift receipt thing so i thought i'd try it today and let u guys know what happened. i went in to a TRU and tried to return the FREE one with a gift receipt and another one with value just to see what would happen. the employee scanned it and it read ZERO and the other 59.99. so he said he cant give me credit for something that had no value and that the person who bought me the gift got it for free.

i said ok well, i might as well keep it cause i dont want to return 2 games just to get one. so at this point i go to another TRU and did the gift receipts for the OTHER TWO games WITH VALUE (each were rung up at 59.99) and got store credit with absolutely no hassle.

so there u go guys, this WILL work and it was straight from the SYSTEM. the SYSTEM recognized the value and honored it. if the employees state otherwise, they're wrong because the system rang up fine

all in all, u can get store credit for the 2 games that are charged 59.99. the free one you are SOL unless u return all 3 as a bundle. hope this helps all of u and sorry if its long

all in all, u can get store credit for the 2 games that are charged 59.99. the free one you are SOL unless u return all 3 as a bundle. hope this helps all of u and sorry if its long

This is how it is suppose to work. You were never able to return the FREE game. People are just concerned about the other 2 games. However, it is not guarantee to work for everyone because the manager can deny you for whatever reason he deems, even if policy says otherwise. You can throw a fit about it, and it may help your 'cause, or it may not.

The whole point is to have the game you want to keep ring up as Free. So you don't need to return it so you're keeping it anyways. If there is nothing you want right now, then don't pick anything up at all.

I did, it just says about how to exchange the place holder games for other games. Some people were talking about exchanging the place holder games for a gift card which will practically solidify the chances of a successful exchange. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

That depends on the Customer Service rep. They might ask you to go to the R-Zone and grab the game you want to exchange for, or they might give you a gift card with the balance on it and then you would just buy the new game with the gift card.

well i mean i understood this and u obiouvsly understood this too but for some reason there were people that still were wondering about it and a few pages back, someone asked about the returning the free one cause he/she didnt realize that the game he/she wanted for free was the one that got charged and the one as a placeholder was FREE. so my post was for that person and future members who mistakenly got the wrong game charged free.

whoever is already certain that this will work (members such as you), please disregard my post. everyone else, i hope it helps you.

DAM!!! but i still looked around hoping to find one and i did!. YES!!! got the last one for $12.xx. so there you go. i know its getting late but maybe some of you can still get in on this. good luck!

Heard of the Virtual Console or WiiWare? You can't buy VC or WW games directly with real-world currency. You must purchase Wii Points and redeem those for VC or WW games. Soon you'll be able to use the points on DSi games (and Wii Points will change name to Nintendo Points).

I went to TRU tonight to pick up a Wii points card. Sure enough they were sold out. The cashier mentioned that one person came in yesterday and bought them out of all 40 points cards they had in stock. :bomb: I don't get why they don't limit the items being sold since this was an advertised sale NOT a clearance.

Will TRU be carrying dead space in stores this week?

I think Im gonna get Dead Space, Saints Row 2 (dont really want it but in case placeholder goes bad it's better than getting an old game that wont go for much on ebay), and a 3rd new-ish game as an additional placeholder

I think the REALLY smart thing to do is to not open ANY of the games, that way if they give me crap about exchanging 2 games i can come back and return all 3 and only waste my time, not money

So to clarify, if i get separate gift receipts for the 2 i pay for, i can exchange them in a week or 2 for far cry 2/fallout 3?

You guys are getting way to worked up. I highly doubt Saints Row 2, Dead Space, or Socom will be available online for the b2g1. You may get lucky in your stores, thats if they get it them, and put them out.

I was so excited because I wanted to get Saints Row 2, Dead Space, and Silent Hill Homecoming from this deal online, but of course, thats def. not going to happen.

Extremely disappointed with this TRU deal this year.

my TRU was sold out of points cards and didn't have any sales fliers around, but luckily the circuit city next door price matched based on a pic I took with my phone.
The girl accidentally did 30% instead of 40, but I'm not gonna complain when I got $40 in points for $29 after tax.

I don't think TRU has done B2G1 deals that close together in a very long time. And if they did, it was as 62t pointed out...one that involved a specific publisher's titles. And I really don't see the economy having that big of an effect on their strategies for this time of the year. If it was after the holidays or during the summer, yeah, but now...hell...we could be buying stuff with carts full of cash, and people would still be holiday shopping.

For my first post on this site, I want to say that this guy has said the smartest thing I've read in this thread so far.

With that said, has there been any talk of taking back sealed games to Wal-Mart and exchanging them? We all know Wal-Mart will take anything, especially a sealed game, without a receipt (especially if it's the weekend of Thanksgiving or the day after Christmas), but if the barcodes differ any at all, that would throw a monkey wrench into the plan, since it wouldn't show up in their system. Any word on barcodes being different for copies shipped to the Wal-Mart behometh?

you dont think the economy will have a big effect, have you been watching the news? the sky is falling according to the media and people are panicking... and no, people will not be buying a lot of stuff this year hence the early christmas start this year at stores like walmart.

as for the two B2G1 sales, i was wrong. it was whatever year Stranglehold came out, that was the year it happened. I remember because when the second B2G1 sale came around I couldn't find anything I really wanted to justify spending money just so I can get a freebie.

Yes, they did do it last year twice. The first time was an unadvertised sale in mid September, and the second was the advertised sale this same time last year. If the sale were to be done twice like last year, it would have already happened.

In regards to it happening twice this year, I have a feeling that there are going to be a ton of deals as retailers get more and more desperate in the lead up to Christmas. Think about it, just in the past week CC has started offering $15 gift cards ... and CC is like a sinking ship as far as companies go. Things are going to get desperate for alot of these companies and between now and January we're going to see a ton of sinking and swimming.

The past 3 or 4 Christmas seasons have been a bit lacking as far as people buying tons and tons of gifts. I would be shocked not to see massive sales following Thanksgiving, or if things don't go well, bigger clear outs in January.

I don't think Toys R Us is in a particularly good financial situation currently (didn't they close quite a few stores this year or last?) and they are getting hammered by Walmart and Target, so the odds of something just as good as this current sale are probably higher now than they've ever been in previous years.

If you didn't buy a game at a store, returning that game to that store is return fraud, regardless of whatever "no-receipt" policy that vendor has. Don't post about it in this thread.

I don't see how that is return fraud. Are you speaking of buying a game at TRU and returning it to Best Buy?

You are allowed to buy a game at a TRU and return it to ANY TRU. Or else how would people that receive gifts from a TRU store be able to exchange their purchase if they lived nowhere near the store the gift was originally purchased at?

In other news, I managed to get my local CC, which is next to a TRU, to PM the Wii points deal at TRU. They PM'd it to the $11.99 price, which made them $11.19 after the 10% additional. Picked up nine of them, which pushed it over $100, and then I used a $15 off $100 or more CC coupon. Nine Wii points cards at $10 each, after tax. Not a bad evening's work, and I should be stocked up on Wii points for quite some time.

Nice! My TRU had none, and I was there yesterday morning at 9am. I would've tried to PM at CC today as well, but I was busy and totally forgot. :p

Hopefully Nintendo will release that improved storage solution soon so you can make the most of those points. :hot:

Side note, I noticed the bulk of the activity was people buying up Wii games. Not that the other platforms weren't getting any play, but it seemed like most of the people were crowded around the Wii section.

I will hit TRU up again tomorrow to see if they get any SOCOM or Saint's Row in.

Hopefully Nintendo will release that improved storage solution soon so you can make the most of those points. :hot:It was a gamble, as it requires the store to do the PM when there isn't a specific price listed in the ad, nor is the item specifically listed in the ad, requires the store to have nine of them, and for them to take the coupon. They've done the B2G1 free PM's to TRU for me before, with the last Wii-specific and DS-specific sales they had in the last year or so, which I reminded them of when I thanked the manager who authorized it.

If they told me no, then so be it. This one had the cards locked up in the display case, as well as in the hardpack game cases, so it was hard to find them to see if they had the nine.

Due to how the deal is rang up, the games that do not come up free can be returned or exchanged for it's full value.Would this mean that this deal can be abused? Buy two games, get one free, return one for full value and repeat? I don't have the money nor the evil to do it, so I won't be one to abuse it...(It's too great of a deal to be dishonorable to. It's been forever since I've seen something get me this excited about buying stuff.)

Anyway, Franklin Mills', PA TRU looked like it survived some sort of natural disaster. Very little things left there, so I'm going to have this deal done online. This brings me to my question. How exactly would I go about returning something from the site? I want to get a placeholder for Animal Crossing (Who isn't?) Would I be able to return it in store?

spauldingfan
10-14-2008, 01:04 AM
Again, people need just read a couple of pages and they'll find the answer they're looking for in regards to placeholders and exchanging them for games that are released after the sale. Some people WILL BE ABLE TO exchange and some people WILL NOT BE ABLE TO exchange. Each store varies depending on the customer service representative or manager who is working.

Example: I may be able to return Mercenaries 2 for LittleBigPlanet when it comes out using a gift receipt (Mercenaries 2 was rung up for $59.99), but somebody else in another state may not be able to at their store. Got it?

So you're saying there is a chance? What was all that 1 in a million talk? jk :)

I think it stays as store credit and has to be used toward another purchase. So there's a safegaurd in effect.

This is my understanding, but I never like to deal with CS, so I never attempt things like this.

I know what the deal is, thanks. They're doing this to combat returns for placeholder games on future games, as well as returns on games at full price to get free games.

Really, cause I don't think you do. The games ring up $59.99/$59.99/$0.00. Yes, if you average it out they are $40 each but that's not how the TRU system sees them, that's how you see them. Because 2 of the games ring up for $59.99, we are able to exchange them within the 45 days per TRU's own return policy. Managers might tell you no, but if brought back another day or to another TRU, it will go through when scanned in.

I'm not sure why you are so against placeholders or see this as fraud. We are doing everything allowed under Toys R Us's return policy. If this is so bad for the company, maybe they should change their policys or quit offering the deal.

Worst selection ever I went to the TRU I always go to since 2004 and the selection sucked ass. They put the Xbox360 games in a back corner and they must have cut out there inventory cause I remeber them having more games last year! they had more DS PS2 and PSP games then xbox360 games and the way they put the games out one behind the other was horrible sad to say Im skipping on this deal this year not worth it. looks like the wii accessories deal is gold.

You know I am not into this whole "fraud" thing. I believe in: you get what you pay for.

But...Is it not fraud to advertise "all games" are eligible (except pre-orders) and not allow many games to be included in this sale? What about holding back games that are supposed to come out during the sale and make them ineligible?(even if it is toys r us habit to get games in late) Could one not get a raincheck for a game that is not in stock(like dead space),pay for it and 2 other games and pick it up when it comes in?
I have a printed advertisment and will use this to reinforce the "All Games" contract if I have any trouble making my purchases tomorrow. Or I still might try the best buy option. All too confusing :(

Oddly enough Fallout 3 Collector's is still showing up as B2G1 free. With free shipping to boot.

Kind of a segue, but do you think it's possible to sell two copies of the Fallout 3 Collector's Edition on ebay for full price just after release? I ask because Saint's Row 2 and Dead Space probably aren't going to make it online or in my store, and so Fallout 3 is really the only other thing I want that's eligible.

And I don't like doing the claptrap placeholder dance.

Argh, they also got rid of No More Heroes online...Hmm, online return policy is only 30 days. Also, if ordered online, you only get store credit when you return. Finally, it may not be returnable in stores, so I would then have to ship it back. Add a $10 shipping charge, and not sure if want...

Risky situation...high risk, average award is not too pleasing to see. Bah, I should have found the TRU ad and price matched for 2 point cards today. Oh well...

My plan for this, Dead Space as the free game. Two place holders which will eventually (hopefully) net me Gears 2 and Prince of Persia...or maybe Fallout 3. Oh well, no rush because my 360 died during the weekend.

So, anyone in the know have the skinny on when exactly TRU plans on getting Dead Space? It has a release date for tomorrow, but TRU's website says 10/20. I rather not try to convince the store to allow me to adjust my games at a future date.

I'm more curious what's the best way to find out a store's exchange policy for this deal.

Should I go there and ask for the manager? Or would it be ok to just call the store and ask? I don't really want to get chewed out in person if they sense what's up. This could potentially be a really good deal, but its maybe more hassle than it's worth for me.

Also, anyone been to the Tustin CA ToysRus?

The one right next to the Bestbuy? That wouldn't be too far out of the way for me to hit up on an exchange deal.

And a couple side notes, my TRU also had a few Blue Dragons which werent there a few weeks ago, I nabbed one along with a few others with the b2g1. I wanted to pick up some Wii accessories, but they were pretty much all wiped out by Sunday night!

I was able to pricematch two more cards at Best Buy, final hour. She said, "I need to call them to verify they have stock." I said, in my head, "Oh no! That Toys R Us ran out yesterday!" She called them, and while she was waiting for their answer she began to manually override the transaction. She got off and said, "Okay, go ahead" and I paid. I should have tried to grab more for CAG since they had a ton... and apparently TRU had stock/told her... OR she was the coolest cashier ever.

It just so happens that bought a Wii today while going in to GameStop to preorder the latest Castlevania, so I guess I was even more lucky that this sale was going on. I went to TRU but the only accesories they had left that I wanted were classic controllers, so I picked up a couple of those and a sales add and went to Best Buy. Like always, they made an excuse not to price match (saying they don't price match 2 day sales), so I went down the street to Circuit City. Not only did they have plenty of VC cards (which Best Buy was sold out of for some reason), but they also honored the price match (even though the clerk tried to say the point cards weren't accesories, she still did the PM). So I picked up a couple of cards and a set of component cables and called it a day. However I just realized that you can't transfer over games to different Wii systems, and I plan on selling mine before Christmas so I doubt I will even use them. If anyone's willing to trade them for MS or PSN points (even trade) then PM me...

Couldn't be helped, I bought a couple Wii Point cards last night after work. 2 @ $13 each after tax, couldn't pass that up. I left 2 for whoever showed up after me before the sale ended. Hope one of you Tulsa CAGs snagged 'em.

So that brings my total Wii Points to 140000. I'm assuming we use Wii Points for GH:WT DLC, yes? And maybe Rock Band DLC...maybe. Still not convinced they're gonna do DLC for RB2 Wii...

Most likely no. Your free game has a $0.00 value in the TRU system, so when they type the number in their system, it will show as such. They won't let you trade a game they let go as free for one that costs $59.

Well, it's false advertising to say "All games" (like on the TRU website) and not have it apply to all games, ESPECIALLY without a disclaimer--which I believe the TRU website does not have near the advertisement.

HOWEVER, in the stores, it really is ALL games that are in stock. New releases this week included.

The "in stock" part is the iffy one though. Like most people seem to be saying, my store didn't have Silent Hill: Origins, and it also didn't seem to carry the limited edition of Brothers in Arms: HH (even though the TRU website lists it). I'm assuming they also won't have the collector's edition of Saint's Row 2, which isn't listed online to begin with. Dead Space I have completely given up on for this week at TRU.

These same discussions have come up every year for the last 4-5 years. Toys R Us is very iffy on M rated games. I am guessing Silent Hill fits into that rating. For a long while they didn't carry RE Umbrella Chronicles or many other M rated games.. From what I have seen if they do get them there is a delay due to the rating.

I don't work there and this is not official, but thats how its worked from my perspective.

That would certainly make sense, given the kid-friendly nature of TRU in general. Frankly, I hadn't been to my local store's game section in a while, and was pretty surprised at the now much smaller Xbox 360 (and I think even PS3) section. Even the games in the cabinet behind the counter are mostly new games rather than higher-age-rated ones as I thought they had been before. No COD4, BioShock, Silent Hill, and so forth.

And for people complaining about TRU not getting games on release day, deal with it. They don't specialize in games. If you want something so bad that they don't have in stock, use the placeholder strategy or just deal with the fact you won't get in on it.

It's definitely hit or miss as to what TRU has in stock.

I went to one TRU to pickup two "placeholder" games and MGS4. That particular store's game section was TINY--they barely had any PS3 games at all and definitely no MSG4.

Yesterday I went to buy two more games at a store near my work and they had tons of stuff. Plenty of popular and M-rated games behind the counter. That time I was actually able to pick up MGS4 as my free game.

Regarding Dead Space, is it actually released this week? Because if so, while Tuesday may be the "release date," it would actually be in stores for sale the day after. So Wednesday (today). Always hated that about game retail, it was the same way when I worked for GameStop. I'll head up to TRU at lunch to see if they have it.

I was considering getting the 3 Lego 360 games - Indy, Star Wars, and Batman. My TRU was sold out of Star Wars (I don't think the $20 price drop even was up yet) and considering Lego Indy will be a Holiday Bundle game, I'm hoping for a big price drop of that. I'll wait to get Batman. I'm too busy right now anyways to get a whole slew of games since I just got a bunch with GS's B2G1F deal as well as though Ebay and Gears 2 coming out next month. What, exactly, did she ask though? I've never done anything like this before, so I'm not exactly sure what the deal is. I understand what a placeholder is, from our end, but do retailers?

If I would call and ask if they allow placeholders, would they know what I'm talking about? If not...how do you phrase that? Isn't the whole idea of the placeholder to kind of con them into giving you games that weren't "supposed to" be part of the deal? Why would a store allow that?

Thanks for any help.

yeah, don't call it a placeholder or explain how you're exploiting the system. just ask "can i return any of these to exchange it for something else" or use the gift option like many others have said.

'Cause frankly it's getting annoying. The majority of questions people continue to ask have been answered OVER and OVER, a lot by me. People forget how to use the "search" button already? Maybe the world should end in 2012 to get of these people...har har.

not trying to get on u but i mean, u r not OBLIGATED to answer everyones questions. this is a PUBLIC forum so they can ask whatever they want. YES these questions have been answered and YES there are answers on the first post by DARK... but not all questions were covered in that initial post. also, some newcomers most likely do not have time (as you seem like you do) reading through 60+ pages of posts.

frankly, you say its annoying how people are asking the same questions, it's some what annoying that you feel like you need to put everyone in their place. like you have the answers to everything. if you feel that you are not getting your "point" across, just stop trying and making it hard on yourself cause thats what it seems like. you seem so mad/frusterated. if you are, just dont post in here.

just my 2 cents, not trying to be on nobody's bad side.

dont call it placeholder.... just say you purchase B2G1 for a gift but that person already has the 2 games... is it ok if i could exchange it this week or even next week for any games i want. make sure you are talking to a manager and get the name too....

And for people complaining about TRU not getting games on release day, deal with it. They don't specialize in games. If you want something so bad that they don't have in stock, use the placeholder strategy or just deal with the fact you won't get in on it.

I'm not talking about online. You guys have your own problems with certain games not qualifying.

Oh there will be more problems than that for those ordering online.. like certain games never shipping and partial refunds etc... look through the previous TRU threads from the other years to get an idea of the shitstorm of complaints that will eventually bog down this thread.

Considering returning them though as this is not as wonderful of a sale. No real PS3 games to speak of Saints Row 2, nothing else new there and the shelf was seriously understocked.

First post here.

Last night I went to a local Miami TRU and unsurprisingly its selection was terrible. Being aware that I may be stuck with my two placeholder games, I picked up Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and NHL 09 as my placeholders since they're going for decent prices as new copies on Amazon. If I get stuck with them I'll sell them on Amazon and only be shorted $10 to $15.

I got Rock Band as my free game. I guess I'll eventually go back or call the store to find out about exchanges.

It's called the "search" bar.

And no offense taken.

again, cant expect EVERYONE to be literate with the way the system (CAG) works. i mean its pretty simple but theres gonna be some that dont quite understand.

i totally see your point, you just seem to get so worked up and you just got to understand, not everyone is going to be as knowledgable as you are when it comes to some of these things.

if you got gift receipts for the placeholder games, you should be fine. i returned them last night and had no problems what so ever. and im sure its for most TRUs since its a SYSTEM recognition and not an employee tellin you what you cant do. the TRU SYSTEM accepted it so the employees cant really say anything.

if you do not have gift receipts, it'll depend on your local TRU.

Nice to see that hoarders have already cleaned out the Wii points cards.

Screw you bastards who hoarded all the Wii Point Cards.

No, TRU realized they screwed up. Since when has TRU ever worried about putting something on backorder, even an old title, and making you wait? And with a limit of 3 and TRU's painful web site, it would have been a lot of work to hoard. If you call 3 hoarding, shipping and tax makes this cold for just one card.

Now let's see if I get mine because I went in right under the wire.

I too got gift receipts for my placeholder games, just wondering how they returned the games?, gift card, store credit etc.. I agree with the fact that getting gift receipts is the key to exchanging for future titles. Their policy is on the back of the receipt and as long as you meet the criteria you should have no problems.

I've been looking out for Sam & Max also, and I'm not hopeful; it's not listed anywhere on TRU's website, and the game itself was initially supposed to come out last week but there was a manufacturing delay on Telltale's part, so it's allegedly coming in this week but no one really knows for sure.

Kinda like a "placeholder" or something...has anybody ever tried that? I'm not so much underestimating as I am saying that TRU won't let this happen, and if they do, management is poor.

I don't see any way to prevent it other than to specifically make sure that all items on the receipt MUST be returned/exchanged or simply not allow store credit to be given. The problem with that policy is that if the individual making the return/exchange received them as gifts, they are SOL and that violates the company wide TRU policy.

It's a loophole, but one that is inherent to the sale. Beyond that, it's plainly dishonest.

The only way to close it is for TRU to stop doing the sale each year.

redshadow
10-14-2008, 06:33 PM
What ruins this deal are the people that run into the stores, and ask if it's okay to return an item. It's one thing to try to return an item later, and get shafted, that's a risk you take when you try to scam a deal like this, but those of you that run in and blatantly ask 'Hey, if I wanna do this...' deserve to have your money taken.

If I were a TRU exec, and I chanced on this messageboard, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't put the recommendation in to do the sale in the future.

Man seriously are you the toys r us policy police? lol! With deals like this, fraud is to be expected. I do believe that most of us are just trying to get other games that won't be out until at least next week.

As for me, I am content with getting placeholders for future titles nothing more, notjing less. It just seems that you are taking this a bit too personally.

There will always be dishonest people that take complete advantage and commit theft but for most of us, we just want better games that aren't out yet with a feebie tossed in for good measure.

I have no problem with the placeholder strategy; there is nothing dishonest or fraudulent about that. You're allowed to use a store's return policy in any way you see fit. It's within your rights as a consumer to do so.

I was merely talking about the problems raised by a certain method mentioned earlier. It's a double-edged sword for TRU, because they have to honor returns but the promotion allows for an exploit. That's all I'm saying.
