I have no problem with the placeholder strategy; there is nothing dishonest or fraudulent about that. You're allowed to use a store's return policy in any way you see fit. It's within your rights as a consumer to do so.

I was merely talking about the problems raised by a certain method mentioned earlier. It's a double-edged sword for TRU, because they have to honor returns but the promotion allows for an exploit. That's all I'm saying.

Not saying they won't get it, but TRU is notoriously poor at ordering and receiving M-rated titles. This is changing slowly, but I definitely wouldn't hold my breath.

I went to TRU tonight as I was filling gas for my family's car, they have Saints Row 2, but no other brand new games that comes out this week. I was told check back later in the week.

I've been doing the Buy 2 Get 1 Free since they did this when Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2002 was coming out, and like some have said, it is up to the discretion of the CS for exchanging games. The key is make sure the free one is your keepers, or more likely than not that game can't be exchanged. Most of the CS will do it in a heartbeat and I've done it without gift receipts too. if you somehow you can't exchange it, go to a different one, at least one will do it. Really your really paying $42 for the game, in a month or two, it'll likely drop in price. I hate for those who exploits it.

I went to my TRU a few hours ago and they only had Saints Row 2 of the three I wanted. I saw some sleazebag looking guy that made his equally sleazy looking gf ask for him about SOCOM. I overheard them and the associate just said it wasn't in their backroom where street dated titles would be and since that was the case it meant they don't have it yet.

Walmart gives you store credit even if you have no receipt. As long as it is sealed and lois brand new they will most likely give you store credit.

Some circuit cities do it too. YMMV for both.

The computer shows the details of the original purchase, but being an exchange shouldn't be a problem unless the manager just flat out says no. Easiest solution is to just say you got it as a gift, already had the game, and want to exchange it for something else.

Where's god of war for the psp or ninja gaiden 2 for the 360? And I live in nyc I went to three stores including the flagship store at 42nd street. For the past 2 years no problem. This year no games, no new release wtf? It's no our fault they stock up on sh_tty games. Well I guess I go to gamestop when the used price is right and ask my friend for an extra discount. You figure with the economy they would what us to spend money, oh well their loss.

amen! all i really want is LBP which i canceled at blockbuster to get on this toysrus deal. I was on the fence about motorstorm2 and socom but the toysrus deal made me comfortable about the purchases. I cant even maximize the deal if i get 2-$60 games and a free $40 screw that. They cater to little kids. Hence why would they put an effort into video games like game retailers do when they hardly make a profit from them?

I'm sure if somebody discovers a certain title everyone is looking for is in stock at a particular store, they will report it here...

Seriously. I don't know if things have changed, but TRU was always terrible at getting games on time. Before two GS stores opened in my city, I bought almost all my games at TRU, and they almost never got stuff in on release day. I often had to wait up to a week, which stunk on ice. Sometimes, when I really wanted something, I had to break down and buy it at the mom and pop store in my city that charged $5 extra for each game.

Just got back from a TRU in Grand Rapids, MI. They were literally opening their latest game shipment as I walked in. They had the PS3 edition of Bioshock and the new SOCOM (without the headset), but unfortunately no Dead Space. Shucks.

Canceled my Amazon preorder on Fallout 3 CE, got NBA 2K9, and rounded it out with Silent Hill Homecoming (all 360). Free shipping on all titles was the dealmaker. Although it would've been nice if they threw in some rope and tied the order to my side door for me.

I caved in and bought Dead Space for PS3 (out of non-reserved 360 copies) and SOCOM w/headset at Gamestop. Circuit City is always such an unorganized, understaffed hellhole in which time is an unheard of concept; the $10 gift certificate was a nice deal, but things just show up on shelves there whenever and I really, really wanted to play Dead Space. Best Buy didn't have Dead Space, but they also didn't have any good deals which makes me wonder why I went there in the first place since Gamestop always gets their shipments in early.

Hopefully next year will turn out better!

no this will not work. i tried it to see what would happen. the game has no value so they'll just take it back. your best bet is to return all 3 games and tell them to ring it up so that the game u want is free. just let them kno that your friend tried exchangin the game with a gift receipt and it showed no value.

Well, My Wonderful Great Mom (Yay! Mom) went to Best Buy yesterday where they held 2 games I wanted until Dead Space came in today, which it did. So today She got them to Price Match very easliy..they were very helpful and what's great is I can return 1 or 2 of the games if I want a different one in the near future. I may keep all three.

Went to the Tustin, CA Toysrus where the Best Buy is two stores down. They didn't have the games I wanted so I tried to PM at BB. They said they wouldn't match "bundles" which I figured is standard bs for no. A few blocks away I went to the CC and asked the customer service rep where he said yes and just bring the games over. While I was picking out games though their official "Watch for thieves" guy swooped in and took my 3 picked out games. I explained
the deal and he went to the toysrus website before telling me the promotion I was talking about ended on Sunday. I told him that was bullshit and showed him the ad before leaving.

Long story short I couldn't get either store to PM even though I had proof and they could just call or in the case of BB walk over and see the promotion.

Same story here as many others. I got tired of waiting for Dead Space to come in so I called BB and was told just bring in the ad or print out of the offer. So I went in and had no problem at all.

Called TRU and they still have no idea when they are getting Socom. Went to BB to price match, none in store or in transit. CC, none in shipment.

Finally said the hell with it and went to GS for St Row and Socom. Cant take advantage of a sale, if theres no product :)

The reason most don't is if you look at best buys price match policy it says they don't do the "free" deals. Some stores are just good enough to do it so to get some business rather than give it away...in rough economic times I think they should take what they can get.

Socom arrived at nearly all TRU on Wednesday. The problem is the person that checks in the shipments more than likely was already gone before it arrived. In some stores those shipments will not get checked in until Thursday. As for Dead Space unless your TRU is one of the top 100 stores they will not get it...It is considered a C title...

kudos to anyone who can get BB or CC to price match the TRS ad. There was a comment, pages ago with the opinion that it's a free game so we shouldn't complain about the selection. This is where I disagree. TRS benefits by clearing stock for new games. In the process they try to rid themselves of games that have been stuck on their shelves for a long time. At least a year in some cases, and no I'm not kidding. They price this B2G1 ad to recieve a profit regardless of the price point. You cannot believe that TRS is being truthful with their customers in my opinion of course. People on this tread have repeated the same lame excuses across the country. Did TRS suddenly become KB Toys. I went to 4 different stores in 3 different counties in new york by nyc. In nyc regardless how of sold out something might be there's always a way to get something. Sometimes before it even comes out. My point comes down to this, TRS is betting that most people will settle and try to get a deal now rather than go through the process of return and exchange. So, do what's best for you just like TRS is doing what's best for them.

Basically imagine gears and halo and all of those super popular mainstream games to be A games and then as we go lower, we end up at C, which is Dead Space.

Basically since its not a huge blockbuster title they are in no hurry to get them in stock is what it means.

I think what they mean is that it wasn't considered a big release so that majority of stores won't it on release time like they would if it was a bigger release. They did. If you walk into any TRU location, they have a huge poster with their return policy mounted on or behind the customer service desk. Similarly, they have the same info on their web site. There is no such thing as a state or Federal law for exchange or returns for consumer products of this type unless you are claiming they are defective. Otherwise, it is entirely at the store's discretion. I'm guessing you already knew this, but just wanted to be an ass.

At the Toys "R" Us I checked out, one of the people working there said the game was too violent to be carried, which surprised me in the sense that they'd say that. 1)Placeholder for RockBand 2 (PS3)
2)Dead Space or Saints Row 2 (PS3)
3)SOCOM bundle

I'm going to take the SOCOM game and Smash Bros to GS and trade it in using the 30% cellphone coupon toward LBP.

Also, I'm not sure if I want DS or SR2 more. However, TRU could make the decision for me if they keep dicking around w/ the Dead Space shipment.

As a quick note to those trying to pricematch elsewhere, from our observation, it may be a better tactic to not ask customer service beforehand but just take your stack of games to a cashier and see how it goes. My wife had earlier stopped at another BB store (Concord Pike, DE) and went up to CS to ask first, and they wouldn't even discuss it. At the other store (Kirkwood) she just got the games, went to buy them, and despite the cashier still having to go get someone to approve it, there wasn't much of a problem.
Of course, two points of note here. CS at the Concord store has always been rather unfriendly, unlike the Kirkwood one. But also, maybe if they see you are in line with a stack of stuff to buy, they'd rather take your money and keep the line moving. Still very YMMV no matter what, so good luck to all.

Jackson here.. I didn't try BB or CC. I just went to Toys R Us and picked up 3 copies of Saints Row 2 for Xbox 360. I got gift receipts for 2 of them so I can exchange them for Fable 2 and Fallout 3 when they are released.

That was the case once, but they fixed it years ago. The last game rings up as free only if it is the same or lower price as the others. The reason Socom w/headset was free is because Infinite Undiscovery rings up as a $60 game with $20 savings, rather than as a straight $40 game.

I am in a HUGE predicament here. I wanted to get two games as placeholders (to later get Gears of War 2 and Fable 2) and then Dead Space as my free game. Problem is, my Toys R Us does not have Dead Space and will likely not get it until the after the sale.

I called BB and they will not price match. I called Wal-Mart to see if they would give store credit for a game without a receipt (so I can get Dead Space from them for whatever game I get from Toys R Us as my free game), and one store said they can't do store credit for anything over $50, and the other said that they cannot do exchanges for video games without receipts unless I get the same game I am returning.

So I am scared to risk it with the one Wal-Mart who said it couldn't be over $50 w/out a receipt and just get 2 placeholder games from Toys R Us and Nascar 09 (or another $50 game) and then return for store credit at Wal-Mart for $50. Thanks.

I visited three stores in Philadelphia and all had crappy selections of games, X360 or DS. None had Bleach DS 2 so I bought it online and was forced to register to get Kirby Super Star Ultra with free shipping (no way I would pay $4.84 shipping). Too bad Final Fantasy IV is not $30 online as well or else I would've gotten that.

that girl most likely does not know what she's talking about. If they allowed this you can essentially take 3 placeholder games and exchange them for anything you want.
