Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for the big show....
Official Toys R Us B2G1 FAQ
Date of Sale: Sunday, October 12th - Saturday, October 18th 2008
In an effort to help the gaming masses, this FAQ will try to answer all questions you may have about this year's Toys R Us sale. It will also help you out in getting more bang out of your buck, how returns and exchanges will be handled, and any other interesting tidbits you may need answered. Any questions, comments, concerns, issues, gripes can be made here.
The Sale
Buy any two video games from anything in stock, and get a third game for free. The free game will either be the cheapest one, or the third game of three games with the same price point.
Is the sale online?
Yes, but until the deal goes online I do not know if there will be restrictions based on system or price point.
Is the deal available in Canada?
Sorry Canuckers
So if I buy three $60 games, I get a $60 game for free?
Yes, you can pick up any three games, at any price point. If three games are the same price the third one rang up at the register will be the free one.
Can I only get three games?
No, you can get as many games as you want, in multiples of three, and you will get a third free for every two you buy.
Can I mix and match my three games?
Yes, you can choose between all available systems for your three games. Example, you can buy two PS3 titles and one Wii title and get the least expensive one free.
What about bundled games (ex. DMC Triple Pack) of games that come with an accessory (ex. Guitar Hero)?
These games are also a part of the sale. As long as the product comes with video game software, no matter the price, it will count for the sale. The only exclusion will be the Wii Zapper.
But a game that comes out the 14th is what I really want, what about that?
Any game that comes out during the week of the sale will be part of the sale. For games that come out after the sale, see the Placeholder section of the FAQ.
Can I preorder a game as one of my games?
No. Unlike a Gamestop, you cannot fully put money down on future titles, only a small, $5 deposit. Games that come out after the 20th of October are not part of the sale.
How the Deal works at the register
(PAY ATTENTION IF YOU ARE CHANCING A RETURN)
Example one, three games, different prices.
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99
When the three games get rung up, this is how they look on your receipt before the deal is taken off.
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $0.00
After the Total key is hit, the game that is the cheapest will go to $0.00. Does not matter the order it is rung, the cheapest one always comes off.
Example two, three games same price
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $49.99
Once again, before the Total key is hit.
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $0.00
When there are three games with the same price, the third game in the list will ALWAYS be the one that comes off as free.
Example three, six games or more, different prices
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99
Before Total is hit.
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $0.00
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $0.00
When six games or more are bought, the system looks at games three at a time, depending in which order they were scanned, from top to bottom. Here we see that the third $49.99 game scanned, and the $29.99 game came off. It is very crucial that you pay attention to the order that the games are being scanned in when purchasing six or more titles.
Example four, odd amount of games purchased
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $49.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99
Before the Total key
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $ 0.00
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99
The register system will always look at the three most expensive games, making the free one out of that set. If you purchase an odd number of games, you do not have to worry if one of them is priced a lot lower then the ones you want for the sale.
Paying attention and knowing this stuff is incredibly important when you are buying multiples of games, and "placeholder" titles for mid week releases.
Return Policy
TRU's video game return policy is 45 days, unopened with a dated receipt or gift receipt. If the game is opened, it can only be exchanged with the same title. No exceptions.
Due to how the deal is rang up, the games that do not come up free can be returned or exchanged for it's full value. The game that rings up free cannot be returned or exchanged because it has no value, only if it is defective can it be exchanged for the same title. Make sure the free game is something you want, or you are pretty much boned.
TRU's M-Rated Policy
Toys R Us has a very strict policy towards M rated software. A very small selection of M rated titles are in view on the floor, the rest are kept locked up behind the register in the glass case. You must be 17 or older with proper identification to buy any M rated game at TRU. If you are interested in a M rated title you do not see, ask an associate if they have it locked up in the back.
How to properly buy Placeholder games
I cannot guarantee this will work at all Toys R Us stores, some management might be against the idea, use at your own risk.
If a game you really want is coming out after the sale ends, but you don't want to risk missing out on something on the shelves right now, the step by step here is what you do. Remember, the return policy is set at 45 days from purchase.
1. Pick the two games that you want.
2. Pick up a game that has the same price point as the game coming out, and the same price point as the two games you picked up. Example, if the game you want is $60, buy three $60 games during the week.
3. Make sure that every third game rung up, the free one, is NOT the placeholder game, but one you want to keep. DO NOT LOSE THE RECEIPT!
4. When the game you want comes in, bring the receipt and the placeholder game to the customer service desk, and tell them that you want to exchange the game for something else. Make sure you make specific that you want to keep the one or two games, and that you want one or two different games instead. MAKE SURE THE GAME YOU WANT TO RETURN IS NOT OPENED.
5. If everything is in order, the exchange will be finished and enjoy your new game!
The 45 days will take you into the first week of December, so plan accordingly.
Any questions, comments, concerns, issues, gripes, or whatnot can be asked, and I will try to answer with the best of my knowledge.

Fantastic deal. Hey OP, you really did a lot of work to put this together. I like the strategy of using "placeholder" games, I might have to give it a try.

Looks like I need to buy 2 placeholder games and get NBA 2K9 (PS3) free. Then I can exchange the 2 placeholder games for SOCOM: Confrontation (hopefully with Headset) and Guitar Hero: World Tour (Software) only. I already have Rock Band 2: Special Edtion pre-ordered by Best Buy, same with LittleBigPlanet, and Mirror's Edge pre-ordered at GameStop (for the runner's bag), but $40 a game seems like a much better deal then holding out for pre-order bonuses.

As far as I remember, every year since 03 this sale has been in Oct. There was a second, unadvertised sale last Sept. that preceded the regular, advertised promotion in Oct.

Stryfe, for once you are wrong. The deal is for games out that week. If the game comes out the next week you WILL NOT be able to exchange your placeholder for it. The new POS release tracks release dates for Promos. You will get a message stating that the game is not able to be exchanged for the other. I know because we tested this next POS release. You may find a Mgr that will overrride but that will be extremely YMMV...

No it isn't, it's always at the EXACT time TRU needs to clear out older releases for the onslaught of X-mas titles. Perfect time for them.

Wow... my TRU can be REALLY picky about return policies, etc... not sure if a placeholder for LBP will fly... what to do, what to do. I figured, though, that TRU would do it a little early to avoid hitting some of the bigger titles for the year.
Thanks for the amazing first posts, DrDarkStryfe!

Am I the only one who noticed sren9's post?
Unless I misunderstood him, he's saying that the "placeholder" strategy won't work because the system itself won't allow it (as opposed to management with an aversion to the idea as Stryfe suggested).
Can anyone else confirm this one way or another?
I don't want to end up canceling my Amazon pre-orders just to find out the that "placeholders" won't exchange.
Also, thanks to Stryfe for the advanced news.

Thanks much, OP. I'll definitely be in for some Wii points. I'm not really feeling a pressing need to buy any games at the moment, so I'll just see what my local store has in stock. I've avoided returns the last few years but I may go for it this time if there is clarification of a new chain wide policy on the matter.

If true, I'm pissed. I was gonna get 2 placeholders (for 2 LBP, one for me, one for a buddy) and pick up a game currently out as my freebie (Wario Wii maybe?).
Placeholders were not allowed last year when I tried to return/rebuy a newer release.

I really don't see how they could say no to an exchange if the game is sealed and it's within 45 days. You would be meeting all the requirements on the back of their own receipt. You're not getting money back, just a different game so you still bought 2, got 1 free.
I had no trouble with 6 placeholders last year at my local TRU's. If they give me any crap this year, I'll just make enough noise to persuade then to do it. It's Toys R Us after all, they'll give in eventually.

TRU's video game return policy is 45 days, unopened with a dated receipt or gift receipt. If the game is opened, it can only be exchanged with the same title. No exceptions.

The game that rings up free cannot be returned or exchanged because it has no value, only if it is defective can it be exchanged for the same title. Make sure the free game is something you want, or you are pretty much boned.
There's absolutely no way that the portion in bold, above, is correct, otherwise anyone and everyone could simply buy 3 games and return the 2 that rang up at full price for their full value, allowing them to get a free game.
This glitch/exploit may have worked a few years back, but they've since corrected it to the best of my knowledge. Otherwise, there would be rampant fraud.

Placeholder exchange wont work?
Here is what I did last year. I bought 2 games I wanted and 1 Place holder, for the 1 game I choose as a Place holder I asked for a gift reciept. Two weeks later I returned the "Gift" game and got a gift card with the full purchase price of the game plus tax.

10-03-2008, 10:58 PM
My ownstrategy for placeholder games involves the Gift Receipt option: Last year I returned all 3 games bought at the sale for later releases and use Gift Receipts with no problems. The previous year I only returned one game and got a huge hassle from the cashier and manager using the regular receipt. I highly recommend the Gift Receipt and then "acting dumb" when exchanging. I think I look forward to this sale more than I do Christmas.

i did it last year. never opened the free game and took the 2 i payed full price for exchanged them and that was that. i plan on using same strategy and if they say no(which they shouldnt) i will just say i want a refund since 3 games are not opened and i am within the return time. i dont really want games right now i want the better games.
Placeholder exchange wont work?

Way to commit fraud and make companies less likely to do these deals.

Wow -- that may indeed be the best strategy. Thanks for the idea, Angosto2!
Is it me, or hasn't this deal traditionally been in November? I could have sworn that's the case, because I picked up Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and Zack and Wiki last year. The first two came out in mid-November according to Wikipedia.
From a business stand-point, it makes sense for TRU to do it as November is a gang-busters month even without the sale.
A LOT of people ran into trouble trying to exchange games in previous years. Make sure you got a manger saying ok. As always YMMV.

NICE! Now if I wanted to get games after the sale but within the 45 day limit, is TRU usually accepting of those dealies? Also, can I open the other games I want to keep, or what?
Yes help1, I did numerous exchanges last year. I exchanged every single game i had (3) to get newly released ones :). Honestly i didn't even know this was a problem because i did exchanges at two stores around me. I even asked the employee and he said it was ok. You can also open the game(s) you want to keep and just take back the other 2 with the receipt.

the placeholder strategy may or may not work, it all depends on how they charge the sale.
say you have three $60 games, what stores have been doing is taking 20 off one game, 20 off the next and another 20 on the third for a total of 60 which is the price of one game. I dont recall tru doing this but I know thats how target does these types of sales so everyone pay attention to your receipts

Way to commit fraud and make companies less likely to do these deals.
the way i read that he calls the game he doesnt want the "gift game" because he's using a gift receipt.

Pretty good timing for me, even though my expenses have been getting away from me lately. Wario's within its return period at GS, so I'll be grabbing that with two other games for the price of one more to carry me through to the holiday season, I think.

It's you. :) You can search the archives (or Google them under TRU B2G1) and find the previous dates. There was, however, a second sale that involved Wii games, IIRC, because I picked up a a 3-for-2 deal after the biggie sale. That's what I bet you're recalling.

I have had no problems with "placeholder" games at any of the TRU's in my area in the last couple years, including ones that were "free". The CSR just returns the "free" one at full price and rings the new game at full price, so it ends up being an even exchange if the games cost the same. Even managers have done this for me without hesitation.
I even did the "placeholder" thing for a game that was at a different price point without any hassle *once*. In this case the exchange took a half hour due to it being complicated and needing a manager to help, but the CSR was happy to do it. I won't do it again, and I do *not* encourage doing this intentionally, since it's a pain for everyone involved.
It really is YMMV, but just try to not to be an ass to employees or make things complicated for them. Plan plan plan, and be polite.

I believe so. I've also been hoarding a 10% total purchase with at TRU card. I bet I can't use those together, but the result should be fine, given how I plan the purchases. Not all TRUs where I live have the same selection, so ... hop here, then there.

No, you bought 2 games as part of a B2G1F deal. Then you commited fraud by using the gift receipt to get $60 back for the free game that is valued at $0. TRU offers the deal when they do so they can make more money before the holidays near. Okay, so they're not out $120, I didn't realize you said giftcard, I thought you had just gotten your $60 back. I still dont see the fraud here. the store gets a game back with the same value. if he used the original receipt would that be fraud too? what if he lost the original receipt but had the gift one, what does he do then?
also, TRU has always, from my experience, given gift cards when exchanging items... at least that's what I've encountered

Its not fraud. Getting a gift receipt is completely within their policy and is legit. A person can buy a gift for themselves. I do it all the time. It may not be what TRU had in mind with their B2G1F deal but it is definitely not fraud.

Hmm, see this is what I'm talking about - there's no way they should allow this, because then everyone would be doing this to get free games (return the 2 that are charged at full price for a full return, keeping the 3rd free game). Total fraud. And if this were the case, people would have been doing it left and right in previous years and Toys R Us would have gotten rid of this deal sooooo fast.
I'm pretty sure they specifically require you to bring back all of the games for the full refund if you use the regular receipt, or they will prorate what you return. Can anyone verify exactly how they handle this situation? Perhaps the guy who says they're using a new POS system? Because the original post states that you can indeed do this (return the games that rang up at full price for their full price), which I find very hard to believe.
With a gift receipt, however, you're not really getting ahead as you're just getting back what you've already spent in credit and have to use it in the store...unless you get a gift receipt for each of the 2 games that are paid for, then turn around and use the credit to get another 2 games and a third game free. Though I'm sure they have some system to catch this sort of thing, as again, it would be a pretty blatantly unintended exploit (and kinda sorta fraud, as well...maybe).

another idea (not sure if it counts as fraud, sorry if it does) is buy 2 games you want and then the third game you buy make it be a game youve bought recently and still have the receipt for. take the new copy back to the store you bought it at and get your $ back.
for instance i bought lego batman last week at GS. so i might go to TRU buy socom, saints row, and then lego batman for free. Take lego batman back to GS and get my money back and put it towards say my LBP preorder.

Okay cause there seems to be a little bit of confusion howthe returns work i'll see if i can explain in simpler terms. You buy two games lets say saints row 2 and dead space and get a third free lets say lego batman. Now you dont open the games and the following week on the 21 you go back and return the saints row2 and dead space now because you got a free game they arnt going to let you do this unless in the same transaction you buy two other games. So you not taking a free game and getting your money back you are simply changing the two games you payed for. Instead of paying for saints row 2 and dead space and getting lego batman you are paying for little big planet and fable 2 and getting lego batman free. I hope that clears up the confusion theres no way to get a free game out of this with out paying for two games

The premise of exchanging titles have always been under manager's discretion, hence why I said it is not a guarantee to work. Some manager's have no problem exchanging titles, some have always been against it and shot it down. The best thing to do is just ask someone at the store during the sale.

I don't know what some folks are talking about where you can't exchange games later than the promotion.
I have done this so-called "placeholder" strategy for years.
When exchanging, it's goes easier if you have all three games. Also, I had no problem exchanging the free too. It rings up for 1 cent and 1 cent is taken off one of the other games.
I had planned this strategy for the B1G1 50% off. I have 4 games currently due to this but will return them (45 days would be Oct. 7). I even bought Virtua Fighter Online (360) and Thrillville OTR during same deal for $19.99 or below games. Those are going back too.
I keep them in the original TRU back I bought them in with the receipt in the bag and wait.
With the B1G1 50% off deal (games at $60), both games end up being $45. With B2G1, they end up being $40.
I always get like priced games as separate purchases. If games are $20, I get 3 $20 games which ends up being $13 a game.
Looks like with all the great games coming, I'll be getting 5 groups of 3 games. It'll end up being 15 games at $40 each ($600). Either way, TRU makes out and I always get extra cuz a friend might want a game and I just charge what I paid.
I want:
Fallout 3 (360 for exclusive DLC)
Dead Space
Fable 2
Resistance 2
NBA 2K9
Gears Of War 2
Left4Dead
LitteBigPlanet
Far Cry 2
Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe
That's 10 games right there with 5 left to spare.

Dude, there is no "risk". Per TRU's own exchange policy, games can be exchanged.
Even if they can't, you will still get your money back. No store can refuse to accept a return within there own policies.
I have never had a problem. TRU employees know we are in holiday season buying and that exchanges/returns are normal.

yaaaaaaaaaay just when i was thinking about how i was gonna get the money for all these games!!
batch 1
NBA 2k9 (keep)
game 1 - exchange for Far Cry 2
game 2 - exchange for Little Big Planet
batch 2
Dead Space - keep
game 1 - exchange for Fable 2
game 2 - exchange for Left 4 Dead
possibly batch 3
Saints Row 2 - keep
game 1 - exchange for Prince of Persia
game 2 - exchange for Smackdown Vs. Raw
hmmmmmmm to spend $390 in a week? hmmmmmm
gotta get my Gears and Fallout 3 collectors from Gamestop thoo
the problem now becomes how you can get them to ring up the games you want to be free. last time i wanted a certain game to be free but the computer put some other crap game i didnt want free so i was screwed. i eventually just backed out and tried again another day

That whole strategy some of you guys try to get to buy games you don't want to exchange them for games in the future just astounds me. Good luck trying that. To me it sounds a whole lot of work. I was thinking of getting Gears 2 at TRU but instead I saw a good deal online for the LE version of the game with the Live.com's 30% off deal. Ends up it was just as good a deal as TRU's in the end.

How is it any more work than just doing a normal return as if you bought the games normally? You have every right to exchange games based on TRU's Return/Exchange Policy. The only issue would be if a store manager put out a policy that if you wanted to exchange a game, you have to return everything, which I think may have happened last year.

Here's my plan and will work very well only if you bought other games that previously came out.
I'm buying SIlent Hill HOmecoming, Force Unleashed, and Fracture (keeping). Since i already bought Silent Hill from BB and Force Unleashed from Walmart, the 2 game i just paid for will be returned to the stores I just bought them from (still have the receipts) and that way i get my refund for both games and still get to keep fracture. Also if you know people have bought a game and paid cash for it, ask them for a receipt so that way this deal comes out cheaper by you returning what they bought and getting money back for it.

how is this fraud? I bought these games and if there's a deal where I get one free, i'm still paying money for the other two games but just returning the games. Nothing wrong with that. May I add, if the deal only runs for a week, it's ok for people to exchange games that come out in later weeks but yet i'm the one doing something wrong. Oh snap, the cops are here!

hooray for technicalities! seriously, i think i agree with what slidecage is saying. the deal says you buy two games to get one free. what you're doing is you're returning the games that you paid for to get your money back and keep the free game. so in that sense, where was the money you spent to get that free game? back in your wallet. it's possible you might get away with it but you can't honestly tell us that there's nothing wrong with that.
what the other people are doing is fine because they are simply exchanging the game they don't want for the upcoming new game. they still keep the games they spent their money on.

Really should not have posted this part. I don't do fraud and realize you most likely don't but I am sure some will try this approach. Too bad I can't get GH world tour or rock band 2 bundles. Would have loved to buy 3 of either of those and craigslist the extra 2.
Nah I'm most certainly not advocating any of these exploits, but I am questioning whether any of these "grey/shady areas" are allowed, because the original post itself seems to imply/state that you are allowed to return the games you paid for for full price, thus making the 3rd game indeed free.
EDIT: now the OP has posted that you definitely cannot return the 2 games fro full price, just for credit for future exchange/purchases etc. Good. As long as people are not scheming and committing fraud/theft.
The idea of people being able to get their money back and get a free game to me is ridiculous and unbelievable, which was why I was questioning the original post's details. If that is the case, we're going to have the FW/SD shitbirds doing it nonstop and no doubt will make TRU stop doing this promotion.
Personally, I don't think 33% off the games, even if they are brand new and just released, is all that great. I'm just too cheapass, LOL. $43.66 (CA tax) for a game that is $65 (again CA tax) is just not good enough for my taste.

Any one know if best buy will match the b2g1f?
EXTREMELY YMMV - every single time I've tried to get them to do this, they deny me because their pricematch policy specifically states it does not apply to "bundled deals" such as Buy X, Get Y free. They always tell me they only match a specific sale price.
I've even gone to the effort of buying the 3 games, then going to customer service for the pricematch.

There's always a loop in a system and in this case there is, the deal stands as buy 2 get one 1 free. No where does it say you can't buy a game you don't already have and it's the system fault for having this flaw. The company is getting their game back to resell to any consumer for full price and i'm pretty sure that game will sell because this doesn't stop the way the market works. The fact that you call this fraud is funny. I guess i'm getting a free game.
Is there a difference if you get a free game and decide to exchange it at a store if you don't have a receipt knowingly you never bought it from that store? I beg to differ if anyone has never done this. It's the same difference.

I think they're missreading what you're going to do. I know exactly what you mean, you're going to return 2 of the games (WITH RECEIPTS PEOPLE) to WalMart and Best Buy because you already bought them there. Nothing wrong with that, you're perfectly within your consumer rights to do that.

Huh, what game is open. I'm not returning any opened games. All the games i'm buying are sealed and toys r us gets the money I paid for those game and since the game i legally mine, i can return them to what ever store since i have receipts to state I bought this same from there. Very hard way to determine where you bought the item.

Does anyone know if Toys R Us is getting the limited edition of Saint's Row 2 and Resistance 2?
In general, do they get limited edition versions? The only one I recall seeing was Madden 09.
I am curious about this as well. On the website they don't list Saint's Row 2 LE, but do, for example, have Brothers in Arms CE. They also don't list a number of upcoming games, and have the date for Dead Space a week after it comes out. So I wonder what the real situation will be in the stores that week.

You know, I see a lot talking about fraud...and some other people talking about acts that, at least, are morally ambiguous. Here's the thing: if you don't want to get bashed, don't bring it up. It's that simple. I have been a member of CAG for less than a year, but I know that there a lot of members of this board who do not appreciate this kind of talk. Whether or not you agree is pretty immaterial. They have the right to bash you for it, just as much as you have the right to bring it up. But don't get offended when the finger gets pointed at you. At least, that's my opinion on the situation.

Though, I think the issue here is that people assume that's real return fraud being discussed ATM, and that's not it. Buying the same game at two different stores and returning one of them with a receipt, that's not return fraud.
Trying to return the two non-free games to keep the free one, yes, that's return fraud, because you bought the free game with the understanding you'd be buying the other two ones to keep.
Trying to return games to a store you didn't buy them at, that's also return fraud, because you can't return an item to a place you didn't buy it at, regardless of what the "no receipt return" policy is at a store. Especially if you bought it at a cheaper price at one store and will be trying to return it for a higher price at another store.

I don't really know what this discussion stems from, but yes, if you're ripping off a store in any capacity, be it shoplifting or some kind of fraud, they may very well call the police on you. Again, I really don't know what this is about...if we're just talking about morally ambiguous nonsense...but the reality is that it all takes is a loss prevention manager with a mean streak, and you can find yourself in jail, all over some games or whatever. Not worth it.

No one knows absolutely for sure.
I CAN tell you I VERY distinctly remember in past years there are a number of people who pull that off, AND a number of people who get shot down by the managers of the store saying the promotion has expired and only allow all 3 games to be returned together.
It is YMMV as to if that will work, so plan accordingly.
(and can I just ask-- in general, not to you specifically dba, if you are going to buy fillers, PLEASE buy games that aren't in high demand? OR games with a million copies floating around, like Madden 09? I keep remembering people buying the big AAA releases as fillers [to return] and others screaming they couldn't find the games anywhere..)

Well I live in NYC and I did that last yr. I bought NBA 2k8 (free) GRAW 2 and Skate, then returned those for COD 4 and Ratchet and Clank Future. I will be doing this again this yr, hopefully it's smooth sailing like it was last yr.
So basically buying games A B C and from TRU; you had already bought games A and B from BB, and still have the receipt, and are within the return window. After buying games A B C from TRU, you are going to return the new unopened copies of and B to BB using your existing receipts from BB.
I don't have a problem with that, I've done similar things though not in this sale. I've returned a new, factory wrapped item to store A after buying it again cheaper from store B. Each transaction is fully within the returns policy, and the items are exactly the same (for instance I would not do that with something serialized or that has some sort of time limitation). Re-shrinkwrapping an item is definitely not cool, and I'm not sure where I am on the TRU "placeholder" thing

Nothing pre-order or usually if it's been released in the last week.

I definitely don't shrink wrap or anything like that, that games i returned are factory sealed like I bought them but since i still have receipts that are within the time window for me to return then i guess i'll return them to get my money back. That money can go towards other games that I want anyway but it's a good thing to have friends at developers/publishers to get games for very cheap:lol:

Enough conversation about returning games to stores you didn't buy them at. If you're buying games at this sale, make sure you check with the store you're buying them at what your options are at for returns/exchanges/whatever.
If you didn't buy a game at a specific store and return a game there, it's return fraud. Regardless of the "no receipt" return policies for a store, that's for customers that bought items at that store and don't have their receipt anymore, not for people to try and screw them over with purchases they didn't make at the store.

Can someone please help me?
I only have one question, that is:
Lets say I buy 3 ps3 games(all 3 NBA games)
Is it possible to exchange all 3 ps3 games (if they are still factory sealed), even the free game, at a later time? or can you only exchange two of three(the paid games)?

Two is possible but YMMV. 3 is a no go so make sure you find a free game you like.

I think thats based off the old announced date. Remember the game got bumped up a week but I dont think their website reflects that yet. I am certain they will have the game the proper week though.
Also, it is possible to preorder right now the games that come out that week (SOCOM, Saints Row, Dead Space) and when I pick them up have them apply the deal? Or does it not work properly with the $5 dollars down already being applied to them?

Already 11 pages?! Anyway, not sure already discussed, but here's my idea of getting what i want w/o place holders (a pain in the ass especially you don't even have a 3rd game you want).
TRU takes pre-orders, so what i will do is to pre-paid all three pre-orders and get the 3rd game free. I believe you can pay the entire pre-order amount...

Hmm, I'm hoping this placeholder method will work for me. I guess I'll gave to pick up 2 $60 dollar titles and get Brothers in Arms free (it's the only thing out now that I'd want to hang on to) and then try and return the other 2 for Far Cry 2 and Gears of War 2.
If only I wasn't already going to get raped by the GH:WT bundle... :bomb:

Hmm. I'll probably buy two placeholder games and get Rock Band for free. I'll pick up Fable II (maybe it looks like its going to be over hyped like the first one) and I'm not sure about the second one. I want Gears 2, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, or Mirror's Edge but preorder bonuses are making it difficult to choose. Also with Gears and Fallout I want the special editions. Maybe Left 4 Dead? Anyway how successful have any of you been with this deal in the past?

Be SUPER CAREFUL ordering online with this deal. Pay with a credit card if possible and not PayPal (since PayPal just adds a layer of mess trying to get problems straightened out)
They have been known to cancel the "free" game and then you end up basically getting charged the full price for the other 2, and you have to fight it a bit to even get them to let you return.
Of course sometimes this glitches and if one of the "paid" games goes out of stock and cancels you still get your free game... but there is absolutely no way of knowing in advance which games they will decide to cancel from your order.

Actually last year i bought 3 wii games, decided i didnt want one of the ones i paid for and returned it got the whole 50 back.
well, that's not exactly the same scenario as keeping one and returning two. Also, your situation is YMMV... Some times if the cashier is not doing the return process correctly, you can get away with a lot of things. For instance, if you use a coupon on the items, when you return, you can get the discounted coupon amount back. Word is, you can try all you want, but it won't work in general (and i don't think you can tell the cashier what buttons to press w/o raising a red flag).
Me just trying to stop the 60% from going...

Good point, i certainly going to skip the on-line part... Order only if the games you want are all in stock (even then, no guarantees, b/c their order system is funky as hell).

Well, it's just an idea... i will find out soon enough (the sale has to active first, i'm not going to ask those know-nothing TRU employees). The only drawback with the prepaid pre-orders is that you're paying the pre-orders in full, way too advance (but then the place holders are doing the same thing anyway).

At the store near my house, they let me exchange a game later on, but I'm not sure if that was an override, or policy.
Also, I am a little confused by the first post. It almost sounded like you said that you could return the 2 games that you paid for and get full price for them, and keep the game that was marked free. Is this true?

It's 45 days. Plenty of time to exchange for LBP, Gears of War, Resistance, Fable 2 or Dead Space if for some reason Toys R Us doesn't get it till the 21.

I wasn't going to get in on the deal, but I just played the FIFA 09 demo, and now I really wanna get it. It seems like a big enough upgrade over 08 to warrant buying it for $40 over buying 08 for a fraction of the price on eBay, like I did with NHL 08 the other day.
I also want to get NBA 2K9, but I'd feel pretty bad buying it, as I've bought 2K6-2K8 each year, and the value of sports games depreciates so quickly. I told myself I'd just buy it every other year, but I said that last year too. :P
I dunno what I'd get with the 3rd game - maybe a placeholder for one of the hot games this holiday season. I've got such a backlog too, most of which are RPG's. :[
Decisions, decisions.

Last year, I ended up returning the free game and another game and they let me exchange them for two different games. I had to explain to the worker like 18 times that all I wanted was two different games and she didn't understand and just wanted to refund me $65 (after tax) for the two games, then a manager came over and did it no problem.
Sure, it's not a good idea to count on it, but way too many people are acting like there is 0% chance of getting anything from that free game.

I never did this before, but can't you do the B2G1 free deal then go an exchange the game you want at a different retail store (i.e Best Buy, Sears, Fred Meyers, etc.) and get credit since the game is unopened and buy the game you want with the credit? Not sure how it would scan out in their system though?

My TRU has a roto hold for Wii Fit on Sunday 10/19.
Pre-orders will not work for this promotion in-store because one is only allowed to put down $5 towards the purchase. There is no way to fully pay off a pre-order game. Online pre-orders might be a different story though.
