So I'm convinced that my Linksys WRT54GS is a piece of crap and needs to be replaced. What's a good router that I could get?

Linksys is awesome, especially that particular router. I've had it for years and it hasn't failed me yet. if you really don't like it that much, then first try to put on a different firmware on it like tomato or the other one I don't remember. What's necessarily wrong with it? Is the hardware broken or something?

I've read lost of reports of problems with that model. Some people (such as yourself) seem to have no problems at all with it. Others like myself and ManaKnight have nothing but trouble with it.

The main problem with it is signal loss. I use the wifi function of it to get my laptop , 360 and Wii online and the connection on all 3 will often just drop out for no reason at all. The 360 is probably the worst with drop outs.

I've tried updating the firmware and it says it's already got the most recent update , and it's been giving me problems for months now , progressively getting worse.

Hmm...have you run it while other wireless devices were working? Perhaps you were running a microwave while playing (preparing some food), I know that a microwave can cause intereference with routers. I have mine hooked up to 2 laptops, 2 Wiis, and a 360 and no problems. Have you tried changing the frequency? I know 6 or 11 can fix problems sometimes. If taht doesn't work, then try throwing on tomato firmware. It turns your router into the equivalent of a more expensive model with all kinds of features that could strengthen your signal.

I have the 54G no problems here, check your local craigslist.

I've checked and changed the frequency a few different times (before our phone was causing some disconnects) but now it just seems to happen at completly random times (it actually just went down once while I was writing this post , and nobody else in the house is even doing anything besides watching tv).

I might try the tomato firmware to see if that helps and if it doesn't then I'll proceed to another router.

I use Tomato Firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) on my Linksys and it works brilliantly. The default firmware is a steaming pile alright. Before I upgraded to Tomato, it was giving me all sorts of weird problems like random drops and overflows when refreshing Steam server browser.

Well I'm already seeing what might be a problem with that plan. It says the tomato firmware doesn't work with newer (v.5 or higher) versions of the model I have. I don't know for sure if my model is one of them or not , but seeing as I've had it for less than a year , I'm thinking it might be.

Crap, I forgot about that caveat.

If you ever want to buy a Linksys again (fat chance, right?), Amazon sells a model specifically for custom firmware.

So I ended up grabbing a Belkin Wireless G Plus MIMO router from Target on sale. I haven't messed around or opened it yet. Anybody wanna give me a final word on whether this model sucks or not before I go opening it?
