Not that this is new news but thought this was exciting news lol. Bluray has been talked about with the 360 for some time but this sure does look like it'll happen sometime soon or more likely sometime in the future. Rumor is the external Bluray drive is being marketed somewheres between 100 to 150 dollars. It's interesting they're goin with the external drive method here again. Sorry if repost.

If it's $100 I would seriously consider getting one.

heard these sorts of rumors back when the official plug was pulled on the HD-DVD format. Be nice to see if they go forth with it , with any luck Toshiba may just recycle the old HD-DVD drives so all us HD-DVD drive owners whould have to do is reoplace the laser vs buying a whole new unit.

Kinda sucks if you own a 360 without an hdmi port though, right? you wouldn't be able to take advantage of blu ray's 1080p capabilities. =[

This might have been nice if the 360 didn't sound like a jet engine compared to everything else in my entertainment setup. Seriously, even the TiVo makes less noise. For a year and a half I tried to use my 360 as a media center extender, but ultimately I gave up in frustration at how friggin loud I had to make the TV just to drown it out. The PS3 is ugly as hell, but it's quiet and it actually handles media pretty well to boot.
Really, I wish to god almighty that Microsoft could do something to keep that 360 quiet and not go all RROD. Then I might have really stuck it out until this came out.

I don't buy it. They don't have anything to gain from it financially, and their recent price drop has helped widen their hardware advantage over Sony. Hell, even in Japan.

Yea aren't there hdmi adapters out there so a little extra cash can get you the 1080p no? I don't have a hdmi port nor a tv that can show 1080p so I'm not concerned in that area. I also just bought a Sony Viao with a bluray drive ><

I don't necessarily believe the primary motivation would be solely about any immediate financial gain in selling the BR drive, but instead this might be an attempt to satisfy the feature vs. feature consumer shoppers (especially single console buying households) who see lack of BR as a serious negative for the 360, comparatively.
Some consumers like the incremental "build your console's features as wanted/needed/can-be afforded" approach, even if it costs them more in the long run (however, not me). Sega, Atari, Nintendo and even NEC have done this with memory and drive expansions in the past so it is a valid (albeit despised by me) model.
That being said, if I could have a BR drive added to my 360 I would seriously consider selling my PS3 as SCEA's choice of exclusives- and its future directions in that venue- are not exactly enamoring me.
For the PS3's sake I hope it doesn't happen (I like to see the console market remain as competitive an environment as possible). Still, it's not like it would make the 360 a "knock-out" with its reliability issues.
I am also highly skeptical of this rumor's validity.
Edit: According to CNET/crave I am wrong-

Every six months this same rumor pops up, and every time it is shot down within a couple of days.
Makes zero sense for MS to do this since they are pushing their own movie service (and now Netflix as well), but we'll see. I doubt it.

Yea just saw this on the feed ticker on G4 again.
"build your console's features as wanted/needed/can-be afforded" approach
ahh yes that would indeed explain the external add on drive
Joystiq mentions it would cut into PS3 sales. Well frankly Sony's biggest thing about their system is oh well you know its a cheap Bluray player as well but not if this were to be released.

When I think about the incremental expansion/upgrade model it is not with any affection. I went out and bought the outboard memory expansions and CD-ROM for my TurboGrafx-16 and found them somewhat worth the expense, but avoided it for the Sega CD & 32X. However, I was suckered again with both the Jaguar CD-ROM and N64 memory pack much to my dismay and was greatly dissatisfied.
Maybe the steep cost of consoles and economic strains make this approach better than the often rumored internal BR SKU. I know it would leave many 360 die-hards upset to see another console SKU- especially if they didn't have the external upgrade option. I am just getting tired of cables, dongles, and externals on my consoles. My EC looks cluttered enough as it is.

It's true. I can imagine the gaming sites...
Video Game Journalist #1: "Man, it's a slow news day. Anything to talk about? Maybe steal some news from CAG and then throw a fit when it's not true and was, in fact, a practical joke?"
Video Game Journalist #2: "We could always recycle the blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360 rumor?"
Video Game Journalist #1: "Perfect! We totally rock and are news is soooo legitimate!"

HDMI 1.2 can do 1080p. What it can't do is the lossless audio such as PCM, TrueHD, and DTS MA., but of course if you don't have a capable surround sound receiver it doesnt matter.

I'd really like to know if this is true asap. Because I'd drop my dusty ps3 like a rock if it is.

Remember when we were going to get the motion controller with Banjo? Good times.
We should have a 'favorite vg rumours' thread.

Its not the holidays yet, the time that any announcement would be revealed would be right before then. That motion controller will prob go with one of the unannounced games that they'll reveal with the NXBE but that's just my guess.

If It's $100 I'll think about it.
But in the long run I would still want to get a PS3, at the $200ish price point anyways, because the Persona series and other RPGS will still most likely appear on the PS3 alone.
