After playing DS every other RPG(besides ME2) has seem moot in comparison. Any suggestions on a DS type RPG I should play to hold me down until Dark Souls???
If you still have a PS2, I recommend King's Field - The Ancient City. It was made by the same people who made DS, From Software. It is single player, but I think you would enjoy it. It is first person, your character is faceless, there's no voice acting, and it is rather short. It's the closest thing to DS I can think of. I've played KFTAC and KF2(PS1) every year since I got them. I wrote a pretty good walkthrough for TAC, pm me and I'll give you the link.
On a side note, I cannot understand why so many people say this game is difficult. These people must be running up to enemies and spamming their attack button like it's Diablo II. If you're sword/shield, you run up to normal melee enemies, let them hit your shield so they get stunned, THEN you whack them. If that attack stuns them, whack them again. For enemies that can break your guard (giants in world 5, fat ministers, black skeletons, red eye knights), make sure your equip weight is less than half of the max - remove an armor piece or two if you have to. Roll to the side, or backwards as they slowly attack, then whack them. Many of the bosses have very cheap ways of beating them 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 4-1 Vanguard, 4-2, 4-3, 5-1. Use situational gear, like a bow, the Dark Silver Shield (for 3-1 boss, Reapers/Shadowlurkers in 4-2), Large Sword of Moonlight (1-4 Tower Knight BP), and the gear needed for hyper mode (Makoto, Morion Blade, Clever Rat's Ring). The Mind Flayers in 3-1 can be rendered harmless by using Anti-Magic Field, as can the 3-1 boss and her copies within a certain radius. You can rack up 140-200K souls in 3 minutes flat by Soulsucking the 4-2 BP dual katana skeleton and his 2 gold skeleton friends, and it takes very little skill to do that run. You can knock Old King Doran, Yurt, BP Miralda and BP Scirvir off ledges to kill them, and still get their gear. Bow/Graverobber's Ring for BP Rydell. Soulsuck BP Selen Vinland. There are so many ways to mop the floor with the enemies in this game that it's not even funny. If you're having problems with a specific enemy type or a boss, ask for help on a forum. I can guarantee you that someone knows a simple way to beat it, with the exception being BP Satsuki, because he's a filthy grass chewer.

That's the entire thing I have a problem with, with this game, other than the insane difficulty. I want to play the game, not grind the game, not have to run it 20 times in normal mode, 20 times in black, nor do I want to run it yet again in white, just to get specific gear to battle specific enemies. I can't waste time like that, I don't want to waste time like that, on a game. Nor do I want to read a 500 page wiki on all the different ways to kill specific enemies. This game is too much work for it to be enjoyable.

Take it slow, pay attention, and keep your shield up.

So I've heard it said that royality is the best class to start as? the holy knight or soldier look promising as well, should I just pick Royality anyway?

royalty class is good because you start off with a silver wand and magic spell ( soul arrow i believe) and its pretty powerful to start out with you can kill many of the enemies on 1-1 quickly with it.
im using that class now and id also suggest maybe using a woman as well ( theres 1 or 2 items you find later that work only for women that give you a boost in souls if youre wearing them) i believe it stacks with the ring of averice and the 2 diff soul sucking spells.

So I died in the tutorial against the first big monster. (Which I guess you're supposed to?)
Then I started on the castle. Which is 1-1 even though the game doesnt specifically say so. Dying. over and over. The game REALLY needs an auto lock feature. I hate how the enemies come running and then jump/lunge to attack. Makes it difficult to get the block timing right sometimes.
So I had hoped after going through a green fog door that when I next died I'd respawn in that location. Giving me the illusion that i'm making you know, progress.
Nope.
Just died, soul count back to zero. So do I need to exit this world once I've got a decent count of souls, level up weapon/armor and wash-rinse-repeat?

Click R3 to lock onto an enemy so that you can strafe around them. Click R3 again to disengage the lock or switch your lock on target. Walk down the long hallway on the bottom floor of the Nexus and read all the red messages on your floor, they tell a lot about mechanics like that.
There are 2 or 3 places in the first level where you can pull a lever to unlock a shortcut so that you can bypass areas. For instance, once you dodge the flaming boulder that is near the first blue-eyed knight you face on top of the battlement, turn around, walk down the tower, and pull the lever at the base to gain a new ring (which adds +50% to your current max health in soul form) and unlocks a shortcut to bypass all those stairs inside the wall of the battlement.
Can't level-up until you beat the first level, but you can use your souls to buy things like healing grass from the blacksmith.

It takes some time bro, the beginning of this game is seriously one of the more brutal starts to a game. You just gotta go slow and then once you remember the layout it will start to come together. And once you clear up some shortcuts and what not it makes it easier to traverse.
But heres the truth of the matter with this game, you just start to get better...it just happens. And then youll bust through areas like nothing, and your character once he starts to get better gear the game just starts to open up more and the frustrations start to become a bit more controlled.
Purple Flame Shield, its a huge help imho and one of my favorite shields.
Which class are you again?

So I visited different areas and just wondered around. Last thing I remember is getting pastnthis bridge where a big ass dagon was flying over and spraying the bridge with fire.

That can't happen. You can only see invaders (and blue phantoms, for that matter) that are near your level. Although some people who are very good at the game have low-level characters with advanced equipment and grief newbies.

And i killed BP Satsuki using dragon sword, since its fire damage makes him unable to move it was kinda easy.... after 20 deaths that is....

For cult-ish games like this, you'll see hardcore gamers pick it up and play the shit out of it, then it goes on sale or gets GH'd or something, then tons of casuals pick it up and it gets pop again.
For other games you see tons of people buy it initially, then the hardcore players are the ones left playing it a year or two later.
Not a hardcore player, but I played the shit outta this game when it first came out, I'm done until Dark Souls.
Oh and the servers are going down October 11, 2011. Last call everyone.

He's optional, you can't even get into the door that's past him. Assuming you're talking about the guy with the red eyes.
You can lure him to the spiral staircase, and it's possible to get him to fall and die. Gives a large amount of souls early in game if you do.

When in body form, when you see blue stains/stones (usually at beginning of a level) go up to them, and you can summon that person to help with your level.
When in ghost form, go into inventory, and use your blue eye stone. This will set it down for others to see, so put it at beginning of level in clear view. Then when someone touches it, you will be summoned to co-op in their game. Best thing about this is that you get souls while helping them, but if you die, you just pop back to your game, but get to keep the souls, unlike when you die in your game.

Yeah I ended up hitting him with like 8 of the soul arrows until he died.. but the lock on in this game sux.. I hate how you have to hit R3 all the time, why didn't they just make it auto lock on when you use the shield?

“While it comes at significant cost to us and although it has been over two years since the game revolutionized the notion of multiplayer and online functionality in an RPG,” commented Aram Jabbari, Manager of PR and Sales at ATLUS, “Our commitment to the game and the fans that turned it into an incredible success remains as strong as ever. While the reality is that one day the servers will ultimately close due to operation and maintenance costs, that day is not today, nor will it be this year. We’re excited to continue to support one of the most significant, influential games in recent memory into its third year, and we’re planning to hold more tendency events for our loyal, beloved fans. If you’ve been waiting to try Demon’s Souls or held off with concern that it was too late to join in, the truth is that there’s never been a better time to see what all the talk and awards are all about.” When asked if the fact that a Flamelurker had been spotted guarding the door to the server room had anything to do with the decision to extend the online functionality, Jabbari politely excused himself, muttering something about his mother calling him.
In addition to their continued commitment to the game’s unmatched online functionality, ATLUS also today revealed plans for Pure White and Pure Black World Tendency events for the holiday season, the details of which would be disclosed at a later date. src (http://gamingeverything.com/?p=9596)

I was planning on getting this game later, for cheap, but now I've decided not to bother with it at all. It's going to be ridiculously difficult and frustrating and that's not what I look for in my games. I enjoyed the challenge of Demon's Souls and loved its "mood"/setting (I platinumed it), but Dark Souls will make Demon's Souls look like a cakewalk. I play my games for fun, not for frustration. I think a lot of people who will get it will do so because they feel like they have something to prove.

I think a lot of people will get Dark Souls becuase they really enjoyed Demon's Souls. Why do you think this game will be less fun than the first one? Based on hype? Sheesh, it just came out in Japan and isn't even out in the US and you already know exactly what it will be like.

I just have a few questions about demon's souls. I just started playing it.
I died from a guy hitting me one time. The game reloaded and I had 0 souls (instead of 500 or something). I transported back to the nexus and quit. Will my body still be there next time I play or did I screw up by not running back to my body and touching it?
I can not seem to get into precision mode with my bow. I even unequipped my shield, but L1 doesn't do anything.- I think I just figured this one out. Do you have to hit triangle when you equip the bow to use 'both hands' and to get precision mode?
How do I level up my character. I found the blacksmith and the guy who holds stuff. I also talked to a woman one time and the blue guy. Is there anyone else in there?

It will be there the next time u get there, its a blood stain with a small aura flying on top.
Yes u need to use bow two hands to enter precision mode.
You can only lvl ur char after u kill the first boss, in Boletarian Palace.
Right now theres a PWWT(Pure White World Tendency) event untill the 17th of October, so the enemies have less hp and 'easier to kill'. U need to be online in the PSN to get the PWWT.
If you have problems, its better to restart and use a royalty class character. Magic does a lot of damage the the enemies in the first world. Then when u defeat the first boss, u can go an lvl up other stats so u can use a bow.

Update: The body was gone, probably because I exited the game. I played through and I seem to have to fight the skeleton thing that killed me or a knight in the other direction. I am stuck in soul mode and I repaired my weapons. I assume the knight is the easier enemy, but he keeps kicking killing me. I can understand why people get frustrated, since you have to go through the whole area with respawned enemies every time you die.
The controls are a little wonky as well. I usually play games slowly, so I don't mind having to walk around exploring, but the enemies are a little tough for the first level.

The game is pretty tough at the beginning, but it gets easier as you level and get better weapons. I platinumed this game two years ago but I wanted to do another playthrough from scratch before I started Dark Souls (and this time, without cheesing any bosses or anything, just pure melee), and it was really hard at the beginning. Now though, I'm tearing through levels/bosses and I'm almost done with the game.

The first level probably is the toughest part of the game. I wouldn't go picking fights with enemies that have Red Faces. Remember to roll as well. It's very helpful.
I ended up getting Platinum on it very recently as well. I feel like I cheated a bit though by checking videos online of it early on. I even beat the Tutorial boss. The second one though always gets you.

Hahaha, I'm such an asshole. I've been invading 1-4 while waitin for my friend to level up so I can play with him, and this one guy was fighting the Blue Dragon at the end, but he was just arrow spamming from under him, so it was taking forever, only 24 at a time. Anyways, he got him down to maybe 15-20% of his life and I ran up, backstabbed him, and then killed him, which means he's gonna have to do it all over again, whoops.
Haha, I just went down a level for being an idiot, that's what I get.

The blood stain will not be at the exact spot you died, it will be at the point you were about 5-10 seconds before you die. IE, if you were to fall to your death from a cliff, your souls would not be where you went splat, they would be about 5-10 feet back from the ledge you fell off.
It's usually a good idea to grab your blood stain immediately so that you don't log on a day or two latter and forget where it was. If you die on your back to the bloodstain all those souls are lost forever.
So where are you currently stuck? you mention a knight so have you climbed the interior of a castle wall and just dodged a flaming boulder? If so, as soon as you exit that stair case turn around and walk away from the blue-eyed knight, down the tower spiral staircase to find an uber ring and open a shortcut.

The game is about 100000x easier than people make it out to be. You simply die to figure out how to win, that's the game's philosophy, there's nothing demanding about it.
Think about it -- how could a game so hard be this popular? If CAGs can get through it, anyone can.
edit: oh, i read wrong, you already beat Demon's Souls...

I was able to beat him. Now I have the ring that gives me more hp in soul form. much better! :D
I basically have gone through most of the castle except for where the dragons are laying. I have a feeling they will wipe me out, so I haven't ventured down there yet. I think I have opened 2 shortcuts and the big boss drawbridge that I have not entered yet. I still haven't fought that skeleton with the huge sword and red eyes yet (he is the opposite direction of the first knight) towards the beginning of the level.
Is there a way to bank souls? Will I eventually be able to sell equipment? I have the guy in the nexus holding some broken swords and stuff I can not equip yet.

@slowdive, u cant bank souls or sell equipment. But the stockpile Thomas will hold everything for u. just try to leave all the items u dont need behind so u can pick up all the items u find in the areas. Sometimes its a good idea not to pick up all the items u find, cause ur item burden will max fast, and any items u touch, but dont pick up, will disappear if u go to the nexus.
I wont spoil the first boss for u. Good Luck.
And question, r u playing online or offline?

If u have a difficult time with the game, try playing it online so u can get PWWT. its only available till the 17th of October. After the 17th till end of month will be PBWT(Pure Black World Tendency). In pure black, u get more souls from slaying enemies but they have more hp. So if u can set up to play online, u will be able to take advantage of the pure white.

i picked it up about 2 weeks ago and I am completely absorbed in this game... I've sunk about 30 hours in, soul level 40 and feel like I'm barely scratching the surface.. I've only been in two of the "worlds" so far
def one of the best games I've played this gen, the game is difficult but not unfair at all

I don't know what level I am (probably 30 or so), but I think the game is easier if you play though the first boss/checkpoint on each level. I haven't tried level 5 yet, but the others seem ok if you take your time and avoid anything with red eyes. The black phantoms are easier to beat than the red eyed characters. I find myself blocking and dodging a lot. I think the game only gets hard if you run through a level or try to take out enemies too quickly.
I haven't fought or seen flamelurker yet. I am waiting on that battle, since he is the 2nd boss. I just got wiped out by 'maneater'. He doesn't seem too tough, but I got careless.

Be sure to take advantage of pure white world tendency if you haven't, purple flame shield and strength ring are easy picking right now.. Ends tomorrow..
Red eye knight is challenging, prob killed me a good 15 times or so.. I can spank him every time now though, that's what's so good about this game.. Rewarding to get through things that seemed near impossible earlier with ease

You don't even need friends to dupe items. All consumable items, including stones and souls, can be duped solo. The process is very easy, too.

It is a pure black world tendency event until October 31st, so why is my world 2 not showing up as pure black? I killed the primeval demon, that it? Trying to fight the black phantom NPC. Before you went across the pit of lava you doused with water, did you continue walking straight outside? If so, ride that elevator up at the start, enter the Tunnel on the second level, make the first left and you should be back at the boss. If not, make sure to go outside once you reach the lava pit again to unlock that shortcut.

Like many others have posted, I re-started playing Demon Souls after reading all the hype over Dark Souls.
I instantly was hooked again and over the last two weeks, I have sunk over 30 hours in and finally beat the game. I ended up using the duplication glitch to make it a more enjoyable experience. I honestly don't think I could have beaten the game without it. Even though I did "cheat" I enjoyed every minute and this is my favorite game of all time.
That said, the almost stressful feeling and isolation this game evokes have me thinking I really need to wait a good long time before jumping in to Dark Souls. As excited as I am for that game, I just don't think I could take it on right now and I fear I would just end up setting it aside as soon as another game gets its hooks in me - like Skyrim or Saints 3.
This game is so great!!

Preferred this game actually, but only because it was fresh and new. Dark Souls gives more of the same, so it's somewhat cheapened by that been there, done that feeling. It's still a great game, but a few design flaws and steps backward keep it from topping Demon's Souls.

Now that I'm playing Dark Souls, could you specify what you consider to be the flaws and steps backwards in Dark Souls?
There are a few improvements like no carrying limit. I also like the Estus flask vs random health potions. And it seems like there are less missable things in Dark Souls which I prefer (like having that first knight die on you if you aren't careful in Demon's Souls). Though that may change as I'm not that far into Dark Souls yet.
Also, I don't remember how spells worked in Demon's Souls but I like the way they are handled in Dark Souls.
I do still need to get back to Demon's Souls and finish off the platinum on it. I have all the hard stuff done (weapons, rings, etc). I just need the ending boss souls from World 3 and 5 for the last two spells. But it has been so long I won't remember how to speed through those like I did in my previous NG+. Then again, playing Dark Souls has at least gotten myself reacquainted with the combat. But I dislike World 5 so much that I'm having a hard time thinking of slogging through that again.

Spells were handled with MP which you could recharge with weed, which was pretty nice. I don't like the limited spells thing.
I do like the bonfire checkpoints. They're spaced well enough where you're not clearing the entire level before you get a checkpoint.

I felt making the world in Dark Souls open-ended but without direction was a misstep. The game is tough enough without really having a goal or wasting an hour getting somewhere only to have to turn around because you weren't meant for this area yet. There's quite a few more beginner's traps that you just have to experience first to avoid later. I'm not talking about twitch traps that you can avoid, more like stuff that you try out to experiment and die for it. When a game punishes you for being creative, that's where I tend to draw the line.

Actually, there are way MORE of those in Dark Souls. The NPC interactions get pretty involved. I do feel like Dark Souls pretty much improved on everything from Demon's Souls, though. Many people don't like the PvP changes and convenant system, but I'm not that into PvP anyway so it doesn't bother me.
I definitely like how open it is. When I get stuck on something, I just explore somewhere else in the world until I find more equipment or level up and then go back. Darkroot garden/basin is especially good for that, as it seems to be an area that you can explore at a very wide level range.

I prefer Demon's Souls for PvP and coop over Dark Souls. The PvP in DKS currently has no variety when facing randoms. Scaling weapons, that was so prominent in DS, is irrelevant. So most of the community follows a lighting/fire weapon and equip setup. As for coop, the DKS lobby system made that a chore to connect with friends even when putting down a sign every few seconds.
As for the positives of DKS, I have to say that the reduced need for grinding for items is a great relief and that you could get every item in the game (minus master key). This is a vast improvement from DS where you had to grind some hours for a pure bladestone or hope the crystal lizards drop a pure dark moonstone or moonstone in that current playthrough. As stated before, I like how open it is as well and the infinite inventory system is great too.

Overall to me..
DS MP > DKS MP.
DKS SP > DS SP.

Were they the named NPC black phantoms or actual human invaders? Random black phantoms (e.g. at the beginning of 4-1) don't count.

Ive killed an invading one, at Old Monk bossfight, and then all the others, like, Selen Vinland(5-2), Satsuki(4-1), Miralda(1-1), Rydell(3-1), and Scrivir(2-2). Also, i maybe killed the dregling merchant, not sure. You know Soul Arrow gets a lil excited too.
Im going trhough the stages kinda fast, tho. Dont really kill many enemies, unless they really are standing in the way. So might go into another NG+ to get the friends ring.
But what is wierd, is that at the wiki it doesnt say you lose char tendency for killing the blacksmith. But it says u lose 2 for the dregling merchant.

I've hit a wall in this game. I completely cleared level 2.
Level 1, I am having a pain getting by the blue dragon to meet the king, I can't beat maneater on level 3, I keep dieing on 4-2, and I either get wiped out by the black phantom on 5-2 or the giant birdman.
I guess I just have to level up until I can use heavier equipment. I have a white bow (2 actually), that I am no where near able to use. I have the lava bow which is nice. I am using my blessed/regen mace that I upgraded to +2. I upgraded my dragon sword to +3. and I am using the adjudicator's shield (was using the heater shield).
I think maneater would be the best bet for me, but is there a shield that blocks his attacks? (I basically have every shield except the silver one).

You should definitely get the Ring of Great Strength if you haven't already, it's in world 1-1 under the tail of the dragon in the "dragon courtyard". It will help boost up you max equipment load which will allow to run/dodge faster while holding heavier armor.

In the second level of the Boletaria palace, run onto the long bridge up to the 1st roof and you can slowly arrow the red dragon to death as it flies by, make sure you have plenty of arrows because you don't want to run out and have to start over.
Dragon weapons, fire spells, or black / regular turpentine applied to weapons will help a great deal with Maneater as it is quite weak against fire.
Running by the blue dragon, a shield with high fire res, under 50% equip weight for full speed, fire protection rings, and/or water veil. Edge forward as it breaths fire with your shield up until you find the range when the flames begin to hit you. Once you find the range of the flame, wait until the fire dies down and raise your shield and sprint full speed up along the left side of the path.
If you can't beat the black phantom in 5-2 now, avoid that side of the swamp. follow the fence which blocks the center of the swamp and if you wear the thief's ring you can sneak by the large club guy on the island near the path to the other side of the swamp.
Out of curiosity, what's killing you in 4-2? the shadow lurkers?

To get the shining items that are below the dragons on edge you can just slowly walk to there and grab it with no problem, but to get the items that are facing the dragons is where you will die (maybe), the best way to do it as fast as you can is obviously where the maximum amount of armor that will allow you to run at your fastest, then go to the bridge to where the red dragon will be constantly blowing fire on, you will need to time it perfectly so it will take some practice tries so you can time the dragons fire, when the dragon is about to start blowing fire on the bridge is when you run all the way to where those items are and pick them up as fast as you can before the dragon returns.

Maneater wiped me out again. I had one of them down to about 20% life. I just realized the "world" is black, so I may try to look for the demon blob thing.
4-2 was also black so it was mainly the gold skeletons, additional phantoms, and the stingrays. It is just the tight quarters/ledges that mess me up. I found the blob demon, so now it looks like that world is neutral.

Are you keeping close to the fire pit in the center of the platform? As long as you keep close to it and at least a quarter of the way around away from one of them that should keep you from being hit / knocked off the platform. Keep it between you and them, wait for an opening, run around, hit it a few times, and retreat to the other side.
Do you have any soul remains? (these drop in the Shrine of Storms) they are like Demon catnip. If you keep some in a quick item slot you can toss them to the side (most normal nearby enemies will attack them) to distract the gold / dual-katana skeletons so that you can sneak by / backstab them and as Brown said, the thief's ring will keep most storm beasts from bothering you. In fact, I wore the thief's ring as one of my main rings most of the time as it makes managing crowds so much easier by shrinking your agro range.

Hello...
i just started the game and so far it looks quite good.
What i wonder is this. In a game like Oblivion to be a thief was a good thing and you could be the game. Not sure about this game.
For example, right now i am out of arrows and i assume i need to buy arrows since there are no where arrows to be found.
It took me also a while to get the grip on these messages left by other people and some are pricks.
In the first area you will see a pit where you see stars floating and the message said, good things come to you or something similar. So jump and ..... died.
Lol.. it was funny.
Anyway, i really like to know if i can beat the game as a thief or if i am better off with something more brutal.
Thanks for any insight or thought :)

Classes aren't what they are in most RPGs, they are more like starting packages. Which class you pick just affects your initial stat allocation and your starting equipment, one class does not learn any skill more or less effectively than any other class. So if you started out as a sorcerer and then decided you wanted to change to melee 10-20 levels in, you could do so easily.
Until a better merchant shows up in the Nexus, you can buy vanilla arrows from the blacksmith who can repair your weapons in the Nexus. Protip: push up on the d-pad while 2-handing your bow to go into sniper mode, press up more to zoom in.
If you want to use a bow, then Dexterity would be stat of choice to upgrade to increase damage. There are also curved weapons and daggers which gain a strong damage bonus from dexterity.

What guardian owl said. Also, if you're having lots of trouble with melee, you can try starting as a royal which gives you a spell and mana-regenerating ring to start with (allowing you to use magic to beat the first level much more easily).

i see. You know, i seen the video and thought, mm.. this sword i surely can not wield as a thief.
I am used to this, that a thief (as a class) can only use/wield certain items. As an example, no heavy armor. But what you are saying is, that it does not matter really and instead you build you character by building certain features of a character.
That is that.
So far i haven't even reached the first boss, so i am very early in the game.

Agreed. You become more familiar with the game mechanics, get used to feeling out the environment, and begin to advance your character. It all comes together. This reminds me that I need to get back to this game finally.

Picked this back up after an almost 2 year hiatus after getting bored with Dark Souls. Doing quite well, but I do prefer the larger assortment of environments like Dark Souls.

I gotta say, I generally found the gunfights in Uncharted 1 much cheaper, less fun and more frustrating in anything in Demon's Souls so far. I went through that game dreading the next excruciatingly long round of machine gun pirate whack-a-mole.

Unless you're going for platinum, PW probably helps the most in 1-1 anyway, since the dragons won't be there (so you cross the bridge easily and can loot their nest) and the door near the beginning is open. I haven't played this game in 2 years, but that's what I remember.

Might not be able to finish the game, but you can probably get all currently accessible Pure White events. The only world you have to completely finish to do the white tendency events (world 5) is bugged and is not actually pure white apparently.
Boletaria Palace
Area 1:
*Executioner's Ground, to the left at the start
*Dragons Nest, on a side hallway just before the short bridge which the red dragon strafes with fire
Stonefang Tunnel
Area 2:
*Scirvir (NPC), Turn right after the starting archstone and drop down the mine shaft from plank to plank, he will be about 2/3rds the way down the shaft in a side tunnel.
Area 3:
*Dragon Bone Smasher, enter hallway which leads to the final boss and turn left, retrieve the sword and return to Scirvir
Tower of Latria
Area 2 (needed for Area 1 event):
*Key to Rydell's cell, as soon as you are at the first tower where you kill 4 mage prisoners and a chain drops, keep climbing to the top of the tower
Area 1:
*2E East, Unlock Rydell's cell with the key from area 2 and this will open the 2E East Gate to your right just before you exit the prison into the open area with the arrow firing machine. You will still need Pure white to get all the items in that room.
Shrine of Storms
Area 1:
*Satsuki, right at the start of the level
Area 2:
*Makoto blade, follow the pretty lights to the hole in the floor, the sword will be in the pit.
Valley of Defilement (moot since pure white tendency event apparently isn't functioning correctly in this world)
Area 1:
Istarelle polearm, after you pass through the room with the rats and the merchant at the bottom should lead to a ledge path with a Giant Depraved One, ladder up to the area should be on your left
Area 2:
Selen Vinland, once you enter the poison swamp, follow the fencing along the center of the swamp and eventually you will find an island on your left with a Giant Depraved One, and a tunnel on your right which goes through the fence. As soon as you are on the other side of the fence, look to your right and you should see a campfire in the distance with the NPC, take her quest.
Area 3:
Garl Vinland phantom, kill the final boss of the world, grab loot, exit and return to fight Garl one more time, take the item back to Selen in area 2.

I am not sure if this is a glitch or what. So far, i have a hard time and still struggle with the best strategies. But that will come over time.
What i am curious about is, the handbook talks about co-op/multiplayer. Since there is no option i can see in the game, is this unlocked during the play?
If its co-op that would be great since i can play with a friend.
Also, all the weapons i found in the game i can not use. So i gave it to the man in the nexus to hold it for me.
Perhaps i can use them later.

That is my biggest complaint. Half of the weapons you can't even use unless you have one of the special rings equipped. I think I am soul level 105 or something and I still can't use most of the weapons.
I could be wrong but you have to be alive, online, and summon other players to help you with one of the stones.

Correct. You must be alive and in an area where you haven't beaten the boss. Then you will be able to summon people who are within 10% +/- 10 of your soul level. You can also be summoned by using your blue stone (when in soul form).

If character is female, Executioner's ground in 1-1 as the NPC drops the best armor for females in the game. The dragon's nest in 1-1 also has one of the better shields, purple flame shield.
If you're a strength build, the dragon bone smash in 2-3 is a pretty decent weapon since it can be enchanted or items can be applied like turpentine or sticky white stuff
In 3-2 if you like to use heavier weapons, near Lord Rydell's cell in pure white tendency to the right where debris is clear is venerable wage, some of the best light armor.
In 4-2 the only item is the makoto katana blade which is a decent weapon if you are a Dex build.

Did you die more than once before you grabbed your bloodstain? You only can have one bloodstain at a time so if you die you will drop your bloodstain with all your souls, if you die again without grabbing it, that first bloodstain will disappear and a new bloodstain will appear about 5-10 steps back from the 2nd location you died and all the souls in the 1st bloodstain are lost forever.

Don't worry, if you've already killed the first boss you can replenish that many souls by killing 2-3 skeletons at the start of the Shrine of Storms. I find that is a really good place to practice parrying->riposte since the skeletons give a lot of souls and you get a bonus soul multiplier (something like +20% extra souls dropped) for a successful parry and then riposte and it usually kills the skeletons in one hit.

If you see any character with red eyes, stay away until you are stronger. You can always go back later and fight them (since you can go back to most areas, even if you have killed the boss).
You will die a lot on the first level. It is also the level you will play the most.
Eventually, you will get to a point where your tear through it and can kill most guys with one hit. :D

I also chose a thief when I started. I dumped a lot of levels into vitality/life. I did dump enough into faith to equip one miracle, but that comes later. I probably put too much into magic, because I have 4 slots and really only use 2 of them.

Whether you pump strength, dexterity, magic, or faith depends what weapon you think you will end up using. Katanas, daggers, rapier-like swords, spears, and bows are primarily modified by dexterity. The rest are mostly modified by strength. Most weapons can also either be crafted into a weapon which gains damage by pumping magic or by pumping faith. Raising endurance / vitality for several levels until you decide what weapon you intend to use is usually a good way to avoid wasting stat points. For more information, see "what each stat means."

You can always try another world. It would be very difficult to go through all of world 1 without first going to the other worlds. In fact, I don't think you can go though world 1 without going through at least 1 other world if I remember correctly.
I will give you a hint that will not give anything away, but may save you some time.
I thought that the bosses were like a puzzle, but that is not the case. When I fought the Tower Knight, I thought you had to get him to destroy all of the statues. I can tell you that is not necessary.

I kinda know how to beat him, but every time i just die at one point. Makes me think that i may have to level up more.
No, i don't want to check wikis because then i spoil myself out of the fun. :) Just saying.
I watched videos on how to beat him...and I could not do it the way the video showed. I ended up beating him my own way. Don't give up because beating him is one of the satisfying victories you'll enjoy. I felt like I beat the game after beating the tower knight....gave me hope that I can make it through this game!

The crossbow is useless, it's sole function is so that those who only put points into strength (not dexterity, magic, or faith) have a ranged attack option. You'll notice crossbows only have a strength requirement. Bows are all around superior and are worth putting a few points into dexterity.

Actually i found it kind of useful to some extent.
Since i was finding somewhere some bold's i used it to just select the enemy and just shot quickly. Not to bad really.
One thing i could not get my grip on is, that i can not upgrade some of my weapons. Its says for example that i don't have item x to do it. If i select a different weapon then i miss item y even though i do have x and y in my inventory.
Yesterday i defeated finally the tower guard. It was somewhat easy actually. Each of my hits with the arrow registered with 40hp. Not sure if that high or low. It was good for me.
Now i will go back to the storm shrine and try to kill the boss there. Sadly i fell of the cliff yesterday.

The main reason crossbows are not very helpful is they are slow to fire, cannot be manually aimed (there is a 1st person sniper mode for bows), and (except for a rare crossbow) cannot be upgraded. A compound longbow will match a light crossbow in damage just by upgrading it with easily purchasable shards of hardstone to +3. They would be handy to use up bolts if you could easily equip and unequip it, but you are limited to 4 hand slots while in combat and those are quickly filled with more useful things.
Upgrade materials can be with Stockpile Thomas and they will still show up as usable when upgrading weapons at the two blacksmiths, they don't need to be in your inventory.
There are 4 qualities of common ore (hardstone & sharpstone): shards, large shards, chunks, and pure. It could be it is asking for large shards instead of shards and you may only have regular shards. Or you may have enough shards and large shards of one type of ore when you need the other type.
+1 to +3= requires only shards
+4 to +6= requires shards and large shards
+7 to +9= requires shards, large shards, and chunks
+10 = requires shards, large shards, chunks, and pure(s)
After modifying a weapon to the proper level with either hardstone or sharpstone, other upgrades with rare ore will be available.
There are 3 qualities of rare ore (all the rest): shard, chunk, pure
+1 to +2 = shards
+3 to +4 = shards and chunks
+5 = shard, chunks, and pure(s)

so far, i did now boss 1-1, 1-2 + bonus boss (dragon) and 4-1, bonus boss here. I am now at 4-2.
anyway i need to upgrade my weapons. they are only +3 so far but these large shards are hard to come by. I have 2 but need 5 total. Well, takes time.
Is there a particular sword and bow thats recommended by anyone. I have a compound short bow +3 and Kiji and a weapon i found in 4-2 (forgot the name but was like a kataka).
(sorry for misspells)
Still great experience so far. almost 30 hours in it.

Go to World 2. There are plenty of shards and large shards there, IIRC. Also at this point you can definitely beat 2-1 without too much trouble, and probably 2-2 and 2-3. Also, the blacksmith who can do the best weapon upgrades (including making weapons out of boss souls) is in 2-1.

Right now i am struggling a little with boss 4-2. Not that he is really hard but i am just so inpatient that i always get killed. Or to greedy. :)
Anyway, i will visit then world 2 first. I really think that if i upgrade my weapons that it will help to have more hitpoints (maybe) on the target.

In 2-2 (area after the giant spider) hang a left at the fork and ride the elevator down. Shortly you will find yourself in a big open cavern. In the cavern on the left side before you encounter the path that leads down to flying bearbugs will be the filthy man again, this one sells large shards of hardstone and sharpstone for 1500 souls each, I visited him often to acquire upgrade materials after farming for souls in the Shrine of Storms.
Best bow can be found in 4-1, when you arrive at the area with the attackable wall which is a secret path around the Vanguard, go up the stairs instead and out onto the battlements, there you will find the compound longbow. You can either transform that into a sticky compound longbow with spiderstone (+damage with dex only) or a lavabow with the Armor Spider boss soul (adds high fire damage to bow which stuns and knocks back the target and does good damage with base of 16 dex). Or if you want to leave dexterity at bare minimum of 12, use hardstone to upgrade to +10

Also don't attack him twice in a row (i.e. don't hit him again while he's still doing his "pain" animation). In case you didn't notice, he's blind, so just don't make too much noise or let him know where you are and he's pretty easy.
If you aren't putting a lot of points into DEX, definitely make the lavabow. It's pretty great, especially in World 5.

Aha, well the long bow i have. But i wasn't able to upgrade so far. So now i will go to world 2 as suggested.
Just a question as to how to upgrade the bow (or any other item). You can add the compound (i think i have sticky stuff) and still upgrade it to + whatever. Or?
Regarding the Hero. Well, i jumped around but sometimes i got slash two times which was my game over.
I think i am just to greedy and wait to long. :(
Right now i put everything in DEX and VIT and sometimes in END. I think that also a thing that did not click with me to which stats to promote.
Faith i leveled to 10 so i can at least learn spells. I got Regeneration altough it seems not be very good. Well...
Btw. the most boring fight i encountered in the game was the dragon in 1-2 (or between). But at least he is gone now.

World 2 is the easiest world in the game. There is a sword there that does decent damage that I upgraded and used through most of the game. There is also a mace in world 4-2 that is good to equip, even if you don't use it. Both of these are found items, so just make sure you explore thoroughly.

If you are making a DEX-based character, a sticky bow is the best (requires spiderstone I think?). This is not the same as "sticky white stuff" which is just something you put on your weapon to make it temporarily do magic damage.
For whatever weapon you prefer (many people enjoy the Uchigatana), upgrading with Bladestone will make it scale (i.e. do more damage) with DEX. Although getting a pure bladestone to max it out is notably the hardest thing to get in the game.
guardian_owl
01-16-2012, 05:52 PM
yep, if dex-based go with a sticky bow for max damage. If you want stun, you can always buy fire arrows.
Doing the second level of upgrade (not sharpstone or hardstone) is a bit tricky. Some weapons have to be not upgraded by sharpstone or hardstone, others to +3, others to +6, and to transmute with a boss soul it has to be +7. The weapon has to be at exactly the right level or the choice to do the secondary upgrade will not display. Secondary upgrades can only be done by the blacksmith you find in 2-1.
If you mess up you can use a meltstone to reset the weapons level to zero, but all ores used to upgrade it are lost.
See here (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/upgrade) for the list of upgrades, click each upgrad and there will be a list of which weapons can be upgraded to that type.
Weapons must be +0:
bladestone = removes +damage from str, huge +damage from dexterity, pure bladestone is VERY rare so will likely be stuck at +4.
Weapon must be at +3:
Clearstone = evens out +to damage between dex and str
Dragonstone = removes +to damage from str+dex, adds fire damage
Mercurystone = smaller +to damage from str+dex, adds poison damage
Marrowstone = +damage from dexterity and extra bonus damage from parry+ripostes or backstabs
spiderstone = huge +damage from dexterity, greater bow range
Weapons must be +6:
moonlightstone = reduced +damage from str and dex, adds magic damage which scales fair on magis stat
Darkmoonstone = removes +damage from stats, adds magic damage which scales well with magic stat, adds MP regen
Blainstone = reduced +damage from str and dex, adds magic damage which scales well with faith stat, adds HP regen
some weapons +0, others +3
tearing = +from dexterity and chance for them to start bleeding HP
greystone = remove +damage from dexterity, huge +damage from Strength
weapon must be +7:
use a boss soul to transform standard weapon into a unique weapon
for weapons which scale well with dexterity you will probably want to look at:
Spears (not the polearms also on the page) (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/spear)
winged spear is the best
Curved Swords (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/swords2)
Uchigatana, kilij, falchion is descending order of quality
Piercing swords (swords which you thrust, like rapiers) (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/piercing)
estoc followed by rapier

As much as people complained about weapon upgrading being confusing in Dark Souls, I thought it was a pretty big improvement (leaving aside elemental weapons being too powerful and scaling being nerfed). No more reliance on meltstone to reset, all upgrades are at +5 or +10, less paths/ore types in general, no combination of stone types for an upgrade, etc.

Mm.. i got the pure spiderstone but it seems that i can not upgrade with this my bow.
Currently i have one basic compound long bow and one i upgraded to +2 quality compound long bow.
I even defeated now the old heroe, at last.

If you want to redo your compound long bow to make it sticky, you should have one meltstone still in your inventory as you find one on the way through 2-1. If not, kill fire geckos in the room next to the pit of lava you had to cool in 2-1 until one drops. Upgrade it to +3 with shards of hardstone, then it can be changed into Sticky at Ed in 2-1. The best source of spiderstone in the game is the crystal gecko which spawns near the area with a big long group of scale miners and the steel shield in 2-1. It will spawn 1 time + 1 additional time per boss killed in Stonefang Tunnel for a total of 4 times. If it escapes without killing it, that counts toward your total of 4.
The only other way to get shards and chunks is as a rare drop from the scale miners which attack with fists. A good place to farm scale miners is the fork to the right from the Armor Spider archstone. You will need 25 shards, 9 chunks, and 1 pure spiderstone to level up compound long bow to +5 sticky.

Only 1 compound longbow is easily available per each game cycle unless you get it as a drop from a skeleton archer (and I don't think I ever had). All that has been used up so far is shards of hardstone and shards of clearstone (to make Quality +2) which can both be easily purchased from the filthy man merchant in Stonefang Tunnel.

Little impact, it's just the starting package to get you through the first few levels. Though like Dark Souls, some start with slightly more stat points when at the same or similar levels. The class which offers the most customization is the royal as it starts at soul level of zero. You are probably going to want to read up on a few things as some basic stuff is different from dark souls and there are some gameplay mechanics which were removed for simplicity sake in Dark Souls which are present in Demon's Souls.
What each stat does (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/stats) - Item burden (can only carry so much), separate memory slots for spells and miracles, etc.
World Tendency (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/world-tendency) - Can manipulate each level to make the game harder or easier which unlocks new items / areas.
Character Tendency (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/character-tendency) - Changes some stats for your character depending on how evil or good you are in the game.

Last area of world 2 is pretty easy (it's just the boss) a little like a puzzle as you have to sneak around and make your way through till you can put the finishing blows on the boss. If your character dabbles in magic it is probably worth killing the boss now as its soul can be used to make Fire storm, a spell which is quite effective vs. certain bosses and for crowd control.

Hold onto them for now! Give Flamelurker's soul to the blacksmith in 2-1, and he can use the other boss souls to create unique weapons for you, or you can use some of them to learn powerful magic spells from certain NPCs in the Nexus.

Phalanx, I had used all my fire bombs, didn't have any magic spells, and only had a mace so I spent 40 minutes or so constantly circling the room, taking out hoplites as they spawned and budded off of the main boss until I was able to move in and kill it, that's when I was playing the game cold.
After that, probably Maneater as it kept knocking me off the platform.

I had issues with Flamelurker, mostly. He was tough solo yet so easy with blue phantoms.
For Maneater I used the strategy of trying to keep the flame thing in the middle between me and the monster and just taking shots when I got a good chance. That was also not a quick fight.

So far for me it has been the Flame Lurker. I basically ran like hell until I got in good position to hit him with soul arrows. Took around 20 minutes. I just got invaded for the first time the other day in 1-4. I was making a lot of progress until that A-Hole invaded me. I had soul arrow, but no catalyst and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. I thought it was a bow upgrade so I was trying to shoot it with the bow equipped and obviously nothing happened. I eventually just picked him off with 170 arrows or so. (I was trying to play without any type of guide.)

I think as a ranged character it is easier. So far i did not fight any of the bosses in melee. I can imagine that it will be much more tougher.
All the bosses i defeated with a bow and so for the most part it was easy to some extent. Still the blue dragon took so many arrows. I think i shot about 700 arrows (total) in the thing. And of course i died a couple of times too.
The other boss 1.boss world 4 took me a real long time. It was especially tricky since it is very narrow and you can get hit so easily.
I assume most of you defeated the boss in melee which i consider really hardcore. :)

I took out the flame lurker and the fools idol(finished with a few quick blows with my falshion+8) with soul arrows. The dragon god was probably the easiest once you figure out what to do as the harpoons pretty much do nearly all the damage. I honestly look forward to getting to the boss battles because there is so much uncertainty until you get there. Right now 1-4 is kicking my butt, can't wait to get off so I can go home and try again. I'm primarily a melee character but have been using more soul arrows on the more difficult enemies.

Say what you want about duping, grinding for dozens of hours for 1 pure bladestone is NOT fun

3.5 for Demon's Souls, I thought. 2.5 for Dark Souls. I got the plat without duping, though I did trade someone a bunch of cloudstone I had farmed for a pure bladestone.

^^Yeah some of the stones I have so many I can't store them anymore. I am on my first playthough. Cloudstone shards I just drop on the ground. I haven't made many weapons, but I have been upgrading the falchon (magic regen one) and the dragon long sword, but I ran out of stones to completely upgrade them.

It's the cloudstone chunks that a total pain in the ass to get. I farmed the stormbeasts for so long. At least it's also a great place to grind levels (4-3).

Yeah, I didn't even notice when I got mine farming those gold skeletons for souls. By the time I was wrapping up trophies, I only had easy ones left that I just hadn't worked towards.

Yep, your right, got the two confused. one thing to keep in mind with cloudstone is it is a good idea to farm for the trophy on your first or second playthrough as by the time you get around to your 3rd+ playthrough in black world tendency it will take more than 1 swing of the stormruler to kill storm beasts.

I recently started playing this game again and got a pure bladestone within 2 hours of grinding. Actually got it before I got all the chunks I needed.
And you guys shouldn't farm for chunks of cloudstone. I'm pretty sure you get enough from treasure during your three playthroughs.

It's allot easier to upgrade the buckler & use the chunks of cloudstone from the body in 4-3. If you play through 3.5 times, that is 8 chunks. You only need 7 chunks for the buckler.
There MAY be another quasi-sequel coming to Vita.

Funny, since Vita's launch I have said the day Dark/Demon Souls comes to the Vita, I will buy one.
I am nervous because I am not seeing a From connection. I think Sony owns the rights to DeS, that is why Dark Souls was not called DeS II. So it is possible that Sony farmed out Souls Sacrifice to some other studio.
Fingers X'd.

hi all,
can anyone help me get the Monk's Head Collar at some point this weekend? I'm pretty sure I have to invade someone who is heading up to fight the world 3 boss.

You don't have to invade - try using your blue eye stone (as if you want to get summoned) anywhere in World 3 and you have a chance of becoming the boss in 3-3. Just put it down somewhere out of the way so you don't actually get summoned as a blue phantom.

ah, so i can probably just put it down inside of the room where the fight takes place.
Though, i guess I'd still need someone to actually initiate the boss fight?

Anywhere in the tower of Latria will work, I don't think you can actually drop a blue stone in much of that final staircase leading to the boss fight. I usually dropped it near the maneater entrance, following the curve around aways and placed it under the pots.
Then it's a matter of waiting until someone connected to the server tries to kill that boss and you will have a chance to be summoned to fight instead of the NPC.

Since this is the last (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/04/11/demon-39-s-souls-going-offline-end-of-may.aspx)month before NA servers go offline, I'm definitely going to enjoy a few invasions during the closing days. Great memories, :applause:.

It's a pure white event currently until May 15ish, if an area is not pure white, try entering the level, exiting, shutting down Demon's Souls, and then booting it back up again. It might take a few connects and reconnects until your worlds are fully averaged to pure white.

I just started playing this game and I really wish I would have played long before the last month of the servers.

Oh man, you started just in time for Pure Black? Rough way to start. Enjoy, though! My fav game of the last several years, easily.

ahhh crap. I forgot about the world tendencies shifting. I think I only have boss battles left. I beat worlds 2 and 4. I have the final boss fights on 1,3, and 5 left.

I really enjoyed this game (except for that one level where there's tons of scaffolding because I must have fallen off of that a dozen times when I was first starting that level :bomb:). I think I'm going to go back through it again soon and try to get the platinum for it.

I beat this game once, and loved it.
Just started trying to co-op this game with my son. But looks like we won't get close to finishing, as our play time is pretty limited right now. I wish they'd give us another 3 months.... I know they have already extended the date way past, and are unlikely to do it again.
