This has to be the first game in a long time to get me to buy it solely on hype. I was interested when I heard about it but following this thread and reading the reviews definitely sold me. Just ordered my copy from goHastings.com for 65.98 shipped. Looking forward to playing next week :)

Welcome to the club! Certainly hope you enjoy it... hate to hear if you got it based on hype and end up hating it. I'm still loving it.

Is there a limit to the stat points you can raise eventually, or does the cost just keep going up?
Saint Noir

I think it is 99 per stat and caps out at 712.
Just checked book and that is correct.

I've finished everything but 1-4. I think I'm going to run through it a dozen times before fighting the boss to level up before the final boss.
How does equipped magic work on new game +? Does it reset you to your default magic, or whatever magic you had equipped during the final boss? Or is the magic person start out in the nexus so you can change through 1-1? Which brings up another thought, does everyone that needed to be saved, return to needing saving?
Also, the wiki lied to me. It said that dark moon grass refills your MP too, and it doesn't. :(

Man, I love how I barely got through 4-1 yesterday, and pussied out before the boss. Today, I beat 2-2 and 3-1, then went back to 4-1. I didn't have all that much higher stats (mebbe 6 soul levels?) and used the same exact weapon... and rocked the whole level and the boss like it was nothing. It's been a hella long time since I felt that I was doing well at a game not just cuz I power leveled, but because my actual skill was increasing. Too bad the chances of a sequel are only slightly higher than Shenmue 3...

I wouldn't discount a sequel. The game did fairly well in Japan and seems to be doing well here (on top of stellar reviews). These are the people that made King's Field 1 - 4!

This game is too much fun. I don't even care that it's hard. The only thing that annoys me when I play this game is when I always run out of time before I want to quit. Hell I spent 2 or 3 hours on 3-1 today (I think I got pretty far before I fell down some really dark hole in the ground) and I just want to go back and play it some more.
And one more thing. In 3-1 I was summoned as a boss twice in a row. The first time nothing happened after 5 minutes and I left. The second time the guy died before he got to me so I got my body back and that ridiculous tornado-turban thing for doing nothing. Pretty slick right?
And one more thing. To answer my question of are ranged weapons necessary it seems to me like they really are. Once again in 3-1 there's that one giant corpse ball that shoots magic at you and beats the crap out of you when you get close (one shotted me while I was helping someone in spirit form). Without arrows I would have to just run past him and there's no way I'm leaving a giant corpse ball alive.

Good game for a demo?
No, there's no demo in the Jpn store. I don't think they're gonna make one special just for the US.
Wow, we're already talking about Demon's Souls 2?? You guys are hardcore. :p

lol, I'm just saying that this game is easily good enough to warrant a sequel. And Saint Noir brings up a good point. From Software has a track record of making sequels to games regardless of if they sell insanely well or not (hell, u can't tell me Armored Core is that big of a hit in the US). And this game is at least selling well to the hardcore crowd, so I have hope.
And for people on 3-1 having difficulties with the corpse ball or whatever its called, which I like to refer to as Legion like in Castlevania Spears also damage it well, so just dodge it's projectile, move in close for a few hits, and when it starts flailing with blades, wait for the arms to retract inside and for it to fire another blast. Repeat. Only took me like 2 reps with a Winged Spear +4 at the time.

It sounds rewarding. I hate difficult RPGs where the puzzles are ridiculously hard or the bosses get like 5 turns in a row. So an action RPG like this sounds right up my alley. Plus, Atlus usually publishes good games and From Software is a good developer so I think it's a solid purchase. Not to mention this game is getting some great reviews.

Personally, I'd like if they made a game like Robot Alchemic Drive for the PS3, since I loved taking down blocks of downtown Senjo when I got annoyed with the storyline.
I'd love a giant robot fighting game that takes place in the middle of a busy city with a destructible enviro.
Oh and SynGamer, you could have my import copy for $45 shipped and save $20.

Well I knocked out 1-2 and 4-1 yesterday. I have started 2-1 as well.
My play time is already in the 16 hour range... the thing is I leave the game running and walk away sometimes and I probably shouldnt, but it is obviously counting that time as well.
Or I will leave to a nexus and make a run to the store or cook something and its like 1-2 hours before I start it up again.
Loving the game so far... i have to imagine its one that if you step away for any length of time you will get your butt handed to you.
I was away this weekend (Kings Island) and I played pretty far into 4-1 on Friday night. We left saturday morning and I didnt play again until Monday afternoon. It took me another hour or so to even get back to where I was getting Friday.

Actually, the game IS full English, but the back of the coverart and the manual are in a mix of Chinese and English. But it comes with a 'cheat sheet' for the controls, plus you have the tutorial level to get acquainted with the controls too.
So, what kind of differences have they found between the versions? Anything major?
Oh and Snake, others have said that if you quit from the in-game menu and not by pressing the Playstation button that the game saves as it exits to the title screen and when you restart you should start where you left off with all enemies you already killed being still dead.

Not sure of exact differences, but I've seen posts about differences between the Asian version and American. Better to be safe than sorry considering this will be the first hardcore action/RPG I'll have played in a while.

ugh. I've died a bunch of times on 4-1 on pure accident by the ledges. It doesn't help that the manta rays keep harassing me, and I can't reliably shoot them down.
Use the thief's ring and they will almost never shoot at you again.

I think the names of some items changed. The servers for the import are import servers(Not that that matters, you cant choose who helps you anyway).
The game is very similar in other aspects.

Man, I couldn't play last night because I had work to catch up on. Now I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms ;).
So, I started using the "Perfect Run Walkthrough" in the guide last time I was playing. I may have started just a bit too late as I didn't commit suicide in Stonefang tunnel after a couple of the bosses though (at first I was trying for pure white so I committed suicide only in the Nexus). I hope this doesn't hose me up for both the black AND white events...
Is anyone else following along with that?
Pro-Tip: WT does not reset during your next playthrough, so if you can't get pure white this round, just get it the next. I'm on my NG++ and nothing can kill me anymore. I've not died once and every world is pure white so far. They weren't kidding when they said the biggest leap in difficulty is NG+, because this round feels easier than when I started the game. Of course, everything being pure white makes a huge difference as well.
Once I'm done collecting everything from pure white, I'll take the plunge into darkness.

1-4 enemies give shit tons of high-end herbs and souls, so it's a great grind spot. Make sure you lock in the spells/miracles you want for 1-1 in NG+, because you will not be able to switch them until you beat that boss again. Also, you will be carrying all the souls you get from 1-4, so if you're scared of being invaded just Nexus suicide before going on. I'm so high level now, nobody ever invades me. :(
Speaking of which, I checked last night and I'm ranked #11 in World Uniter's and #14 in Most Souls Collected. If I understand the Pantheon correctly, that's a ranking of the entire US server, right? I was pretty shocked I ranked that high because when I was doing NG+ I was #4 in World Uniter's! Locally, I've always been #1 lol.
Just look for RaidenTR if you're ever up there, that's me with the big ass sword!

Nah, it's not needed as long as you back out in time. I've always just used a dragon sword on it and dodge rolled backwards once the arms pop out again. Quickness is key to killing it without being hit.

If you want an easier time at the start, start with the royal (starts with soul arrow , which is ranged magic, and MP regen ring). Otherwise, it is up to you.

Do you guys mind explaining how the "co-op" works in this game? Not so much about the rules or gameplay--more about the network technology behind it. I understand that random players will be interacting with you throughout your game, and I just don't get how this works, being that I'm an Xbox Live gamer and something like this simply isn't possible there (I assume), unless they're your friends. Demon's Souls is obviously very innovative, but I haven't been able to find any discussion about what's going on behind the scenes. Does anyone care to give a fairly in-depth description, or could maybe direct me to one?

When you enter the game, your instance on the server matches you with similar soul level players. I'm not sure if this works in brackets or if they just randomly toss you into an instance that isn't full. This is only possible because of dedicated servers not unlike those of MMOs.
One thing I have noticed is that there must be a either a memory limitation per sitting or that instances can become low-pop after people in yours quit, because after a while of playing I just stop seeing messages and other players altogether. At first I thought this was just because I out-leveled everyone, but as soon as I quit and load my save I instantly start seeing tons of stuff again.

I just did some research on the Pantheon and it is indeed a hall of fame. Man, I can't stop playing now until I'm #1! Something I forgot to mention is that not only is it a ranking system, but you can completely inspect those players. It records stats, equipment, spell/miracle list, deaths (I have around 250 but more than half of that is instance reset suiciding rofl), trophies collected, even hours played! Some dude named Kane has almost two billion souls when I checked last night and I'm only 1/4th of that lol.
Well, that answers my question as to why I'm not able to find PvP anymore since I'm in the top echelon of players. :\

Anyone got any tips on Maneater? fucker keeps killing me in like 2 hits. I saw on the walkthrough on gamefaqs that you can shoot arrows through the fog to take out the first one. Cheap, but I did it. But then the second one appears and I still have to deal with one. The same guide said that if you hide behind the brazier, he can't hit you with his attacks or spells, but you can hit through with your spear... Um, I can hit him with my spear sometimes and he can most def. hit me through the fire This guy is really starting to piss me off in a way that Flamelurker (only other boss I've had a problem with) never did. At least with Flamelurker I got his HP down to a sliver and then usually died cuz I got greedy, but I can't even land hits on this bastard!
Dammit, I didn't realize you couldn't go into the lava AT ALL in 2-2. I thought you could because there was an item out there. How do you get that?
I am kind of pissed because here's what happened. I played for a long time fighting bugbears and such and got about 15,000 souls (a lot more than I had ever gotten before without returning). I even did the bit where you jump down to where the black phantom is supposed to be. I sniped the two crystal lizards, etc... Then I figured out how to get back to the lava tubes (which was not easy and the online guide was dead wrong about it). I fought more bugbears in all those tunnels which was time consuming as I had to wait for my MP to regen.
Then I went out to a lava area and killed a bugbear who dropped a treasure right at the edge of the lava. I went to get it and just as I bent over to get it I thought I got killed by one of the stupid flying bugs. So I went all the way back there again (a bit easier as I went the other way - still had to kill bugbears though). I collected even more souls and then got to that spot, killed the bugbear, put the flame resistance ring on, then walked the edge. This time i died again but wasn't attacked. I realized then that I had been killed by the lava not the stupid bug :bomb:. So I started back up again and by this time it was really late (like 5am last night) and I got sloppy and the stupid fat minister in the mines killed me because I didn't roll fast enough :bomb:.
This was my first fuck fuck fuckity fuck almost-throw-the-controller-through-the-TV moment in this game. I lost about 20,000 souls which I could have used to buy the evacuate spell. Dammit. At least you keep your items so I kept all the shards and whatnot I had collected. But damn...
So, anyway, there is an item way out in the lava - how do you get that?
Oh, also, I think I may have killed the primeval demon in 1-2 a long ways back. Are they always there or do they just show up when it goes pure black? If it is always there I may have done that early on when I got that elevator going. And I'm trying to follow the perfect walkthrough. I don't remember the online guide (which also has you going through the world tendency events) warning me about that though - it mentioned activating the elevator but didn't say not to use it. I of course went down there because I was exploring. So now am I screwed for getting it back to white again? Maybe that's why Stonefang tunnel is so white for me now (while I'm trying to get it black). In fact, I may have hosed up my white tendency event there because I killed myself after I did that not realizing I was probably at pure white at that point... Damn... Can I go ahead with the other worlds and just do that one later or do you need to get them all black at once for something (or at least in order)?

don't worry too much about 20,000 souls. I don't know how far you are, but if you can get through 4-1 (which really isn't bad other than the dual wielding skeletons) you can rake in the souls in 4-2 very easily in just the opening section, suicide, repeat, collecting your bloodstain souls every time. In less than 10 minutes I raked in at least 20,000. Now I'm kinda pissed that the enemies in 5-1 and 3-2 (which are my next targets for beating) don't give nearly as many souls. I died at the boss in 3-2 after clearing the entire level and lost ~14,000 souls, but it's not nearly as big of a loss as that many would have been at the beginning.
Those bugbears do take way way way too long to kill for the number of souls they give though...
ChibiJosh
10-13-2009, 08:27 PM
You actually can go in the lava, you just need a high fire resistance. Also, primeval demons drop colorless demon souls.
Saint Noir
10-13-2009, 08:27 PM
Yeah. All of 3 is weak on souls.
As for the stuff in the lava... use water veil or whatever spell AND ring of flame resistance and it should allow you to run out there long enough to grab one and back. Heal. Repeat. Lots of chunks of dragonstone among other things are out there.

I just beat him. I did pretty much what you said and used my ranged attack on the other side of the fire. If he came close to charge I would roll away a few times, he would fly around, land and we would repeat. I peg him with shots, he charges, I roll, etc. Wish I could have killed the first one in time, then the second doesn't come! Love 3 for it's creepiness and magic items. Don't like lack of souls!

If you guys can one shot red eye knights (doesnt matter with what), I think 1-3 is the easiest and quickest for farming in your first run (not Newgame+).
Just spawn at the Penetrator Archstone, and move back to the 3 red eye knights. Fire an arrow at one to bait it to you, kill it, and repeat with the other 2. It should take less than a minute for each one, you probably won't get hit, and you'll get a shitload of full moon grass.

No, if you kill it the second one still comes, regardless of speed. I used the shoot through the fog glitch so the first one was dead by the time I even entered the fog, and the second one still came. Took like 10 minutes of shooting too, as I only had normal arrows and a non-upgraded longbow, so each shot only did like 13 damage  Sadly, I couldn't handle even just one maneater, lol.
I think I'm just gonna farm souls and see if upgrading my stats helps at all.

That sucks. Guide says differently. Maybe I just interpreted it wrong and it is just warning against having 2 at once.

No, I'm pretty sure the guide says to kill it quickly because a second one will show up later, and you don't want to have to fight both at once.
Also, I just accidentally beat it.

No, you said the second doesn't come if you beat the first one fast. The guide says the second one comes no matter what.
Quick, does anyone know what happens if I go through 1-1 without saving the guy? Does he disappear forever, does he automatically move onto 1-2, do I need to rescue him in 1-1 regardlessly?
I didn't realize the boss to 1-4 was through the first fog, and I had two phantoms with me (and had died on 1-4 too many times) so I couldn't suicide. And then, once you beat that you pretty much have to beat the final guy because you can't level up after that until new game +.
This is hilarious, I was invaded on 1-1 right after I opened the boss door. I was going to go back out to the nexus, but when I touched the stone it said I couldn't go back in multiplayer. So, a black phantom shows up in front of me and goes running off. I hide way back behind the beginning of the level and he's currently on his third loop around the level. I wish he'd just give up.

ah I'm almost at NG+, I'm Soul lvl 96, just need to finish up any crystal geckos I missed (I didn't take the left path in 2-2, so gotta hit the nest).
So basically once you beat the boss of 1-4, and thats your last boss, you HAVE to move on to NG+? I thought you had to ask her to open the portal. Or, does she open it right after you talk to her after beating 1-4 boss?

I made it to the boss of 3-1 only to die in what probably would have been an easy fight (got caught in the trap things). Luckily I saved freke before that so the trip back to her tomorrow should be easy.
Where is the best place to collect healing items from dead enemies? I seem to remember getting a lot on 1-1, but I might be wrong about that.

no I'm not sure how they rank it, but immediately after entering the pantheon its the list of dudes on the left. It looks like its a list of people who've beaten the game, but I don't know how they ranked it. It's certainly not by soul level, I'm trying to figure it out. Either way, you're on there!
Are you finding New Game + significantly harder? I'm picturing it being like when we initially started the game, enemies do that same proportional amount of damage.
I guess I don't want to be underprepared so I'm still grinding the shit out of those 3 red eye knights in 1-3.

I imagine it's just in order of completion. I'll get knocked off after so many more people complete it, I guess.
1-1 was a bit easier this time through. I actually ran through it in one go unlike the first time. But, that's probably due to me being able to cast a lot of magic this time around.

I'm stuck on tower of Latria 3-1.
Where do I go after I see that bow machine of doom?
I have to redo the whole stage because I fell after I saw the bow machine of doom when I did a detour.. (lol..)
But I'd like to know in advance where to go.

And is there a way to get white tendency quicker on a stage? I believe I asked this before but I guess it was ignored.

There's a key right near the beginning of the path toward the bow. Once it stops shooting, grab it. Then go back to the floor inbetween the floors with Rydell locked up and Freke locked up. There are two locked doors you can now open.
As for world tendency, the quickest way would probably be get to black and then kill the primeval demon that appears once you're pure black. It will take you almost to pure white alone, as far as I understand.
Also, if you get the resurrection spell, you could just sit around summoning phantoms and resurrecting them, I think that would do it too.

At the bow machine, get the key right at the edge of it. Then go back to where there are two locked gates and that key will open those and you can get behind the machine turn it off and proceed to the boss.

Apparently the quickest way to get pure white is to get pure black first (sounds weird, I know). Then in one go, without returning to the Nexus, kill the NPC black phantom in the level, the primeval demon, and any boss in that level.
Make sure you do it in this order. It doesn't matter if you die, just make sure you do those 3 things before returning to the Nexus.

Me too - I'll be back again tonight even though I ws so enraged last night (first time really in playing it).
Anyway, I needs to do this 3-1 business and free that Freke person. Apparently I need to get more spells but my big problem is an utter lack of money to buy all this expensive crap. I guess I have soul gems (the normal ones from soldiers and heros and stuff) to redeem. Maybe I have enough to cover what I need there. There's no other use for those, right?
Saint Noir
10-14-2009, 01:36 AM
Yeah, the soldier/hero souls are just free money. Make sure to use when you are spending so you can't lose them. The red/blue dragon soul is also worth a bit and not good for anything else.
ChibiJosh
10-14-2009, 01:37 AM
All the other spells require boss spells to buy, so you don't need a lot of money to get them. And, no, there is no other use for the hero/soldier souls.

Jodou: How much more difficult is the second playthrough really?
It feels as if your stats were reset back to your starting game. Once you get them up higher again, especially vitality, it levels out. Granted, I picked this game up very quickly and I'm only using the best gear in the game, so it makes a difference.

Jodou have you gotten the Foe's ring yet? It's the only ring I have to collect but I know its gonna be a huge hassle to go from pure white CT (where I am now) to pure black CT just for that one ring.
lemme know if you have, I'd be interested in doing a quick trade just to activate the rogue trophy.
I haven't because I'm focusing on finishing off the pure white events. My NG++ is all pure white now, so I'm going to check 5-1 for Istarelle tonight. Finally got magical sword 'makoto' last night as well.
Question: the boss for 5-3 is supposed to spawn a black phantom of Vinland after you collect Astraea's pureblood soul. Do you actually have to kill her for this event in pure white or can you just let her suicide after killing Vinland the first time? The wiki is pretty vague since you can fight the boss either way.

Fast, hard DPS while warding is up. Just make sure to position yourself so that you can recover easily, even if that means approaching from the front. I can't imagine doing this fight without warding on.

LOL! I never bothered with that item, because it's nothing rare. You can avoid having to kill every bearbug in those tunnels BTW, so no sense wasting time if you don't want to. I wouldn't recommend farming them either, until you get a sword that can cut through them like butter. 20k seems like a lot now, but I can get that from one mob kill in NG++ lol.
And if that almost made you rage, wait until you fight the boss of that stage.

any class can use any weapon (as long as you have the stat requirements for it).
I beat black phantom Scirvir (or whatever his name is) on 2-2. I just sat back with thief/graverobber ring and cast poison cloud like 5 times and he didn't even move. It took like 20 minutes, but it was better than risk dying. Now I want to try to get back to 2-1 to beat the primeval demon to get the WT back up.

Black world tendency = very hard. But more rewarding. If you want to farm, 4-2 is the spot in a pure black world. You can make easily ~150k souls per run. For me, that's ONE stat point now.

Same thing can be done to Old King Doran lol. And with any of the unique black phantoms all you have to do is get them to chase you then figure out the point at which they turn around to walk back. Then thiefs ring approach, run them through, run away and repeat. Its a cheap way of doing things but you don't have to worry about dying add poison cloud and its even quicker.

Anyone find Tower of Latria creepy?
I do for sure. Manipedes or whatever they are freak me out.
Speaking of the Tower of Latria, I went in there last night and got to that arrow shooting thing. No problem, rolled past it but all that was there was some treasure. The FAQ says "walk slowly and it won't shoot you" or something to that effect so I thought maybe I had to walk towards it with my shield up. If you hold up the shield you can walk towards it but the shots knock me back, twist me around, lower my stamina, and then the second or third volley kills me because I'm no longer facing forward. I'm sure the real guide has some better info but I didn't have that handy when I was playing last night. Stupid FAQ though :bomb: with it's less than useful info.
Hmm - OK, the real guide isn't much better except that it does say you have to go right in front of the arrow shooting statue to get the next key. It doesn't say how to do that though. Can you sort of move pillar-to-pillar and hide behind those? It seems like maybe I could move out, absorb one hit, then get behind the next pillar and let the stamina regen.

io: For the key by the arrow shooting statue, the key is right next to the start of the bridge leading up to the statue. You don't need to get up to it. Once you get the key, the door it unlocks leads you around the back of the statue where you can turn it off.

I found Tower of Latria pretty creepy. Also getting killed by one of the mind flayers...classic. Stuns you and then comes up to eat your brains easily one of my most favorite deaths in a game...better than Dead Space even. Died because I got pwned.:applause:
Also I found the Valley of Defilement (5-1) thusfar to be very oppressive and creepy with the rickety boardwalks and overall rain/swampiness of the place.

Yeah. Do this... don't try to walk into the arrow death. The key is right at the edge. You may already even have it and don't realize it. Check the locked doors!
Literally... there will be the path of arrow death... the corpse right there in front at the cross point is what you want. You don't need to head by or into the arrow path. You can grab it without getting hit or needing to block.

Just got a Ps3 monday, perfect timing for this fan-fuckin-tastic game.
My only slight gripe is that I wish more of the bosses were harder to just stand over or way away from and blast with spells.

Well, fuck, after my experience with the lava where I picked up something right on the edge and insta-died I thought that was just a bit too far out to grab. And yet I rolled past the arrows successfully to get treasure on the other side .
Why is it neither the FAQ nor the guide mentions this obvious thing! I didn't touch the treasure there because I thought I'd go into the painfully long "picking things up" animation and get killed by the arrows when I did that :bomb:.
The FAQ says to walk slowly which makes no sense as you don't even need to go into the arrows. The guide says the key is "in front" of the statue which that first treasure most certainly is not (it is way far away from it at the back).
Grrr... Oh well, I don't seem to have too much trouble with those mind flayers or whatever they are (though the guide calls them "Octopus Men" for some reason ;)) so I guess I can grind back there again.
A question - does your bloodstain with the souls remain even if you go back to the Nexus and go to other worlds as long as you don't die again, or do you have to go get it right away within the same level? This one isn't too big a deal (only 2400 souls or so) but I left there and went to farm the mini-phalanx for a while so I felt like I could make some progress before quitting last night.

In order to even get the black phantom Gael Vinland to spawn in 5-3, you have to talk to Selen Vinland in 5-2. She'll only show up in Pure White WT. Once you do, after you beat Maiden Astraea (doesn't matter what method you use) and collect her soul, once you either load the game or leave and come back Gale Vinland should appear in the same area he did before. As long as you talked to Selen and got the quest mission.

5 does suck. 5-1 has tons of places to fall in it, and enemies in hiding. 5-2 has you walking through a poison bog most of the time, so be sure to bring a ring of poison resistence, and at the end you can knock down a bridge that will take you back to the beginning so if you have to do it again, you can skip the whole poison bog part.

Just beat the 3-3 boss. All I have to say, is fuck you "DemonlordX" (I think that was the invader's name). Fuck you and your mother, you garbage eating piece of shit. All the fucker did was dance his ass around the whole time. Since I use a spear, I couldn't hit him with it, and I suck at the push thing to knock his shield out of the way, so my weapon was damned useless. I don't have any big damange spells yet, so I had to soul arrow the fucker to death... slowly. I had to have used like 15 spices just to keep my mana up. I think he hit me maybe twice, as he rarely attacked. Just danced around. AAARRGGGHHH. Took me about 25 minutes just to widdle his health down. He was easy as hell, but boooooring and just took too damned long. DemonlordX, whoever you are, I fucking hate you. /end rant
Anywho, all I gots left now is 1-4, 4-2 (damn you laser eye shadows) 4-3, and all of 5.
Is seeking soul arrow (or whatever its called) worth it? Mana cost seems way high. Does it do significantly more damage than soul arrow, or is it just the same spell with seeking, for a hella lot more cost?

Depending on your magic, it'll shoot 5 soul arrows at once. It's pretty useful, but has a shorter range than normal soul arrow and can still be dodged pretty easily.

My 3-3 was lame too.
As for this spell, I skipped it this playthrough. The higher your magic level the more soul arrows come out to home. If it is worth it or not needs to be addressed by someone who grabbed it.
EDIT - And it was above.
EDIT 2 - Man, the black phantom is 5-2 is a pain. I killed her the second time no problem, but I fumbled a button the first time and one shot took 90% of my health. That's a major blow!

I'm up to soul level 89 and their must not be many other people cause I got summoned to the same guys 3-3 level twice in a row. The first time I almost felt bad cause I killed him in about half a minute and after getting my body back I fell down a pit like an idiot and died, so I put down my blue stone again, the second time he didn't even make it up stairs to fight me. I've now got 5 of those weird turbans but have only fought 1 person, they usually die early. btw chibi I played with you yesterday. Yeah, I know. I was talking about it in the IRC before Fat Princess. Evergoo asked if you were any good and that if you were he'd have to draft you into his FP team. Unfortunately, Kandal picked you first. I could not get past that dragon in 1-4 no matter what. I eventually got someone to kill it for me. I got it down to half health with soul arrow, but once it moved, I couldn't hit it. So, I found a phantom that was good with a bow to kill it the rest of the way.
Yeah, I frequently end up summoning the same phantom two or more times. The same guy just invaded me twice in a row actually, luckily, it's a good black phantom. I just hanging around at the beginning and he/she is running around killing everything on 1-3 for me.

Ugh, time to zone out with some DQIV before I rage smash something.

Got angry at the game for real for maybe the first time. I beat 5-3 boss from above, I wasn't about to get into it with Garl. I go down to collect my spoils and didn't realize the extent of the plague baby infestation nor how little I could move in that muck. I died, having just been restored, and screwed up my WT. So, no more BP Garl or his sister with the shield quest. Boo to that.

A question - does your bloodstain with the souls remain even if you go back to the Nexus and go to other worlds as long as you don't die again?Yes.
Nah, didn't even need to talk to her, as he was just waiting for me the second time I entered. He's supposed to be harder, but he never even came close to touching me since he doesn't move lol. I'm not so sure you can do the fight either way, because my brother killed Astraea first and then Garl Vinland in his pure white and Vinland didn't return after that for him.

I really hate that world, just because clearing the trash reminds me of WoW. It's so annoying.

Speaking of which, I just got my INT up to 40 last night for the sixth spell slot and OMFG am I a farming machine with it. I took world 4 to pure black and I can farm 200k souls in three minutes using soul thirst and soul sucker. Pro-tip for using soulsucker: do a backstab to knock the enemy down, rush it, and immediately start casting soulsucker. They will stand up right into it and instantly die.
In 4-2, the black phantom ninja skeleton guy gives me 77k souls alone and each of the gold skeletons are worth 44k. Man, if only the silver bracelet were unisex, I could be racking in even more per run. I'm to the point where every run is a stat point, which is just silly.

The dual wielding skeleton in 4-2 is killer. I've killed him once so far, and hes killed me a bunch of times. Nothing seems to hurt him, and his lunging attack can kill me in one hit.

Any skeleton is weak to fire, I believe. So use a fire spell or a dragon weapon if possible.
Question that I know has been answered... does WT and CT reset between games?
Is it a bad idea to get to black character tendency in my first play through (I'm going to farm a bit before beating 1-4, all that's left) and do Mephistopheles' murder quest before I beat the game? Is it better to save that until after you have done the pure white CT? Thoughts?

Quick question about weapon upgrade trees. Are all weapons the same, or does it depend on the path you take to upgrade it? Like, say, the meatcleaver. If I upgrade it from a club+0, is it the same as one upgraded from a mirdin hammer +6? If so, for weapons I assume its best/easiest to follow the shortest upgrade path so you don't blow through your stones?
All I've got left are 4-2 and 3, and 1-4, so I'm trying to farm a bit for ores and souls, and get as many spells/upgraded weapons as I can to prepare for NG+

I'm starting the game tonight and don't want to pick a crappy class that will give me a terrible time in playing through this game. Is there a class anyone would suggest for a newbie? I was thinking about a Temple Knight. Thoughts, comments?
As mentioned numerous times in the thread, Royalty is a good class to start since you get Soul Arrow and MP regen ring right off the bat which means less direct engagements and thus less chances to take damage. You still have to use strategy and skill to do well with the class though, since you don't have much in the way of armor or vitality.

I needs to get me that. I hate switching my bow out for the talisman that I have now just to heal. That's from the black phantom Scirvir, right? I'm close to doing that except that the WT of 2 is near pure white now for some reason. It's so close I'm wondering if I should try the white event first then do the black.... What is it that tells you the exact WT? Some sword or something? How do you get it?

Yep, definitely start with Royalty. It makes the initial run through 1-1 much much easier that it would otherwise be. Once you level up you can always go with more of a fighter if you so desire once you get the hang of combat. But having the ranged attack initially is key to making it a much less frustrating experience. Note that I only played this way so I don't know that for sure but given Shipwreck and others having a hard time even making out of 1-1 while I had little to no problem I think it does make a huge difference.
As you progres, though, you may find yourself doing more hand-to-hand combat. Once I got the purple flame shield and the winged spear I have found that I am fighting more often that using magic - and I'm still sporting light armor (just upgraded from the initial wizard's clothes to the black armor I found in 4-1). For those further along, is there a better set of light armor to be found?

I believe the swords tell you your CT not WT. You can't know for sure the WT. And, yes that is one of the two ways to get the tailsman that I know of. The other is to get your CT to pure black and initiate the assassination missions, and the reward for killing Ostavia is the tailsman. Of course, he still has to be alive, and I've had him die on me in both of my games so far.

Thanks Jodou. Nice that you don't have to waste your stones for some of the upgrades. Now all I've got left is 1-4. Trying to decide if I should farm first or if I'm ok to just go ahead to NG+ (I think my soul level is about 70ish). Also really regretting upgrading my winged spear +6 to a moon spear or whatever it's called. If enemies have any magic defense, it takes forever to kill em!
And sendme: Check the rest of this thread and the wiki http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/intro for good info. If your not too far in, might want to consider restarting as a Royal. Barbarian seems one of the most difficult classes to start with, and if that's more your style of play, you can upgrade your stats later to direct that. Classes don't mean shit after the first level, as you can upgrade any stat at any time as long as you have the souls, and there are no class specific equip. etc.

Yeah, it's from Scirvir and it's a jack of all trades, master of none. I.e. it doesn't have the MP bonus of the silver catalyst nor the miracle power bonus from the talisman of god.
To see your WT, just hit start and go to the WT tab. Every world is listed there with a visual clue and will be either illuminated up to +3 above neutral or darkened -3 below neutral. To go pure black, the archstone will be just that -- pure darkness.

Wheeeeeee, RaidenTR is back at #4 in the US for souls collected! God damn this Kane guy in #1, I just can't catch up to him. He's always roughly twice as many souls as me. Hmmm, approaching 90 hours played; I play this game way too much lol.
I keep hearing alot about this poison cloud spell. When do you get that? I just freed Freke and got fire spray and warding. I assume it is a soul from one of the bosses I have yet to fight.
Someone mentioned not wanting to upgrade the winged spear. I have it at +6 right now and can do the moon + 1 but I was holding off till I could make it better because the stats go to crap at just +1. I couldn't believe the dropoff. I guess that's because it adds magic attack at the expense of physical. The only problem is I'm not sure what I need to upgrade it to +3 and I don't want to upgrade it at all until I can go all the way up.

Ok, I'm expecting the game to arrive either today or tomorrow so I want to know as many start-up tips as I can :)
So far I have;
Pick Royal
That's really all you need to know. But here's a few things that might help some more:
Make sure you have your shield equipped in the left hand and silver catalyst in the right hand. Approach enemies slowly and press R3 (click the right stick) to lock on and then blast them with Soul Arrow (R1 button). Just don't run willy-nilly into a group of enemies as even the low-level shambling zombie things in 1-1 can kill you pretty easily early on (and even now that I'm soul level 30 or so) if they surround you and hit you without your shield up.
Oh, and find the Thief's Ring which is on 1-1 as soon as possible. I missed this the first time around and had to go back and get it later. With that you are pretty much invicible to many enemies (because you can sneak within soul arrow firing range without being detected).
Once you defeat the boss on 1-1 I would suggest leveling up strength so you can handle the purple flame shield and winged spear which you will find on 1-1 and 1-2 after you get rid of a certain flying pest. I'm still using these same items much further on in the game.
Oh, also remember that 1-1 is laid out pretty well to take on in chunks with visits back to the Nexus to save your souls (by buying stuff since you can't level up yet). You will make a couple of circuits around and unlock doors that make it easier to get back to where you were. At the end when you get the big boss door open (the big one at the end of the first approach) you can definitely make a quick trip back to the Nexus, then just go back in and defeat the couple of guys between the archstone and the door easily enough. You may want to buy a Heater shield with your collected souls as that is a nice in between item while you wait for the purple flame shield and will serve you well in the first boss fight.
Oh, and if you see a red-eye knight at the end of a long walkway (there's only one on the whole level), avoid him for now. Come get him again once you level up a bit.
So, yeah, I guess there are lots of tips besides being a Royal ;).
I keep hearing alot about this poison cloud spell. When do you get that? I just freed Freke and got fire spray and warding. I assume it is a soul from one of the bosses I have yet to fight.
Kill Boss 5-1 (Leechmonger/Impure Giant) and trade soul to Freke Yeah, I looked it up as soon as it was mentioned here, lol. I love DoT spells.

It's very "hole-in-the-wall" to be honest. It's been in Simi forever, in several locations. I've only been in there twice in the 16+ years I've lived here. They're in the process of remodeling, and I've always felt pretty awkward walking in there...but I've never *not* found what I was looking for there.
I think I bought Chrono Trigger there for the DS for like 15 bucks the day it came out.
The girl that sold me Demon's Souls did fill me in that they're guaranteeing that they'll have the lowest prices in town. Pretty awesome for a little store that I'd assumed didn't do very well.

io, mebbe others can chime in, but as I said above, I really regret upgrading to the moon path of the spear. I did it towards the end, where enemies with high magic defense start cropping up, so I'm practically only doing the physical defense damage. And from what I've read, 1-4 boss is almost completely immune to magic damage, so looks like I'm gonna have to spam poison cloud...
For NG+ I think I'll try picking a different weapon. Spears are great imho, but it'll keep things fresh.
Also, I LOVE Death Cloud for those fucking read eye knights in 1-4. Cast it on them and run like the little bitch I am ;)
Alright, well I'll hold off on upgrading it for now then.
So, I went after the 4-1 boss and got wiped out twice. Got back to my bloodstain the second time so I had close to 20,000 souls when I died the second time. Then the stupid black katana knight at the entrance got me the 3rd time because I got hung up on something while rolling away. Anyway, I cut my losses and just went back to get those souls (so I ended up with about 9000). On the plus side, I'm getting good at dealing with the silver skeletons .
I wish there was a quicker way to get back to that boss though - that level is definitely not designed like 1-1 where you can unlock the boss and have an easy trip from the Nexus.
I didn't look at the guide at all for the Adjudicator but I wish I had. He was killing me through multiple levels of flooring (he's down below) and the first time I never even got to see him. The second time I cast warding and went down a few levels and fired off a few soul arrows but the animation for eating healing items takes so damn long he killed me while I was trying to heal.
Oh well, I'll read the guide and see what it says. It seems the only safe area is right by the fog at the top. But from there you can't attack him either.
Edit - Bah, OK... So if you stay at the top it's his stupid tongue that's attacking you. It seemed like multiple spears when I was getting hit . I guess I need to go all the way to the bottom and attack from there.

HP? The royal gives you a ranged attack with soul arrow spell and comes with a fragrant ring that regens MP points. Not HP. The ring has to be equipped to work. The catalyst (wand) when equipped increases your MP and allows for spell usage.

To kill the 4-1 boss Stay very close to him and attack the meat cleaver stuck in his side. When he attacks you with the meat cleaver roll clockwise around him and the attack should go over your head. There is a pretty decent youtube video showing the technique. After hitting him enough in the side he will fall over, and you can attack his head for a ton of damage.

I had great success with this method. I didn't even have to roll, as soon as he did the teehee noise I just ran under his attacking arm. Took a minute to get the timing, but once you do it is cake.

Yep. Get your health below 30% and use Clever Rat's Ring. Bring tons of heavy arrows and use the best bow you have available to you. Absolutely take out 50% of his health when he's perched over the rampart and loose only when his head is staring down sight. Once he moves, make sure you're as close as possible down the steps (about two steps from the foyer is the best you can do) and again, volley when his head is mostly static.
I was popping him for ~50 on the ramparts and ~40-22 on the castle wall. Took me ~400 arrows to down, but he's so easy the hard part is patience to just sit there for 20 minutes.

Tried to play as a royal and never saw my HP go up from the ring or the spell. I said the hell with it and went back to the barbarian. Got a little farther in the first level and was able to buy a helm. I also bought a sword but cant use it with one hand yet. I can see it taking a week till I'm done with this level.
A hunter starts with a bow.. now magic but the bow has further range anyway... arrows can get expensive..
Short of finding a crossbow on level 1-1 I dont think there are a lot of ranged weapons that are affordable right away.
Plus I find the hunter is pretty badass with his axe and can cut down quite a few enemies at a time, or at least stun them.
You cant even get the magic spells offered until you have the wand (catalyst) or talisman. Before that the NPC's that offer them want nothing to do with you.

Oh man, talk about doing it the hard way lol. He's quite possibly the easiest boss in the game if you just counter-clockwise circle-strafe him.
Yeah, I was trying to use the Tower Guardian strategy of sniping him from above .
That's another cool aspect of this game - you have to use a different strategy for each boss.
But you have to admit, going in there cold you have NO idea what's going on. I was just walking around the top and all of a sudden I get hit for 75% of my health, knocked down, barely have time to heal once, then get killed again on a second hit. HP? The royal gives you a ranged attack with soul arrow spell and comes with a fragrant ring that regens MP points. Not HP. The ring has to be equipped to work. The catalyst (wand) when equipped increases your MP and allows for spell usage.
Guess I read the book wrong. I thought the icon that came up when I casted the spell with the royal was to regain HP.

If you are using soul arrow, just make sure to target enemies by clicking R3 and then fire the spell at them. Should hit and you don't have to get right up on them. But if you continue with other character this may not apply for awhile. ;)

I decided to try the blue soul thing today and first I helped some guy beat the tower knight, then I tried it in 3-1 and ended up as a black phantom in this small room I couldn't leave - the door was foggy. After not seeing what to do I left (using the stone that lets you leave) thinking maybe I accidently put down the black phantom stone. Then I did the blue one again and the same thing happened. After a minute of running around the room I guess the guy who I invded died so I won and got a crazy hat - not much defense but apparently it makes magic stronger. Has anyone else had this happen, and what was it/can I leave that room?
Is this also going to change my WT? (not that I've been paying too much attention to that anyway)
On another note I killed the red dragon :)

^ The big boss for world 3 does not fight he summons a black phantom to fight for him. So, if you lay down blue stone you have a large chance of being summoned to fight on the evil team as opposed to getting help.
Why does WT have a mind of its own? I finished 5 completely and have not even been back there. I messed up the WT away from pure white. I checked my screen and it was back to pure white. I went in and completed the tendency thing I needed. Is it effected by its own going ons? Am I changed by what other people have going on? Same thing is going on in Stonefang. Though I think I am bugged out in there this playthrough. No matter what, no Scirvir. :/

Apparently WT gets bugged to shit when you play online. I played offline cause I kept getting invaded in 4-1, and when I went back online my Pure White WT went to neutral, seriously Atlus has to do something about this bullshit.
There's a notice servers will be down on 10/21, so maybe they're doin a fix then? Who the fuck knows...
On a sidenote, I got my ass kicked on Flamelurker in Newgame+. I didn't die, but he kicked the shit outta me, I dunno why I did so badly this time. What were people's strategies on him, melee-wise? I think you do it by auto locking on and just firing. You don't go into snipe mode. When he gets to second part I water veiled and flame resistance ringed and ran up the stairs with cling ring. I missed a few of my first attempts, but was protected enough to retreat and heal with regenerators ring. Once I made it up to the door way, I stood in the door way and had a perfect view of his head. I autolocked and soul arrowed the rest from down there.

This game is fucking amazing. Definitely in my top five games of this year.
Anyone have any tips of what I should be doing next though? I've just been wandering around after I beat 2-1. Went to 5-1, got my ass handed to me by the boss (and it also doesn't help that stage is a giant clusterfuck :bomb:). Went to 4-1 next and the damn enemies there are annoying as all hell. Died there multiple times 'cause of a damn pincer attack in that underground tunnel, which I saw coming but just didn't know how to kill those dudes off properly in that narrow corridor.
I'm just collecting items and equips from all the stages, for the most part, but I'm not entirely sure what I should do next. Should I start upgrading some of my stuff to make the newer weapons? If so, where's a good place to farm ores? I think 2-1 was a good area?

Pretty much every area has a different ore.
http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/upgrade That will tell you what the different ores effects are and where you can find them.
Possible world tendency glitch?
So I'm reading the guide and apparently when you go into the pit in 4-2 that Patches pushes you into where Urbain can be rescued, there is supposed to be a body that is inaccessible with the "Makoto" sword. Only in white world tendency does it become available. Well, the world tendency on 4 was near black (the gem is pretty dark in the Nexus anyway) and yet I got that sword. Very odd, but since that is the only white WT event in that world I guess I'm taken care of, so that's good!

Yeah, the dragon smasher sword is the same. The rubble clears once it hits white and you can grab it even if you aren't in white any longer.

I beat it at Level 97. Technically I was at 101, but I was a little stupid in the 1-4 final battle and...well you can guess what happened.
Toughest bosses for me would be 1-4, 2-2, and 3-2.
Just beat 2-2 in NewGame+, it was a pretty big jump in difficulty. I still one shot guys in 1-1, but they do a lot more damage this time. I'm really not having a problem on normal guys, its usually the bosses that are noticeably tougher.
Keep in mind SaintNoir, I've seen guys as low as 70 beat the game. If they were good enough to beat the game I'm sure they aren't having too much trouble in +, but more levels can never hurt. It's your call really, like I said, starting at 97, I'm having little to no problems.

I seriously doubt it as it is near black right now and I haven't done much there but go into 4-1 repeatedly to get levels and eventually beat the 4-1 boss (which I just did last night). It's been pretty dark every time I've looked at it and would have done nothing to make it darker anyway in the times I've been in there.
Then again, when I beat 4-1 I suicided in Stonefang tunnel and didn't seem to effect that at all - it is still near white (though not enough to be pure white).

Killing bosses, black phantoms, and primeval demons is the way to move towards white. Primevals only appear in black tendency. So, to go to pure white it is easiest to be in pure black. Beat a primeval and the world's BT black phantom. Then beat a boss. That world should be in pure white then. Guide says to beat the first boss in every level, then leave the second for when you are trying to move the scale up to white. Just make sure you don't die in body form in a world when trying to move it up.
Also beat BP and primeval in one sitting without going to Nexus or it may screw up the count. Others can probably guide you more directly, as I haven't started doing this.

I don't think any of my "everyday" gear is missable stuff. It was just good items that are strewn about the levels that I upgraded with ores I gathered along the way. Most of the weird items that are WT dependent are just being sought after to get them... for completionist.
Most aren't recommend for average use, I don't think. Least not by me (do want to get that talisman of beasts though). Just decide what kind of stuff you want and upgrade from there.
EDIT - example... I use a dragon sword often. Does fire damage. Can be upgraded from lots of regular swords with dragonstone and you even find a decent one as is in a level.

My impression is that playing style and stats are much more important than specific pieces of gear. I'm wearing my monk head scarf thing primarily because it looks awesome (although it makes it hard to see in tunnels). Things that seemed impossible before are suddenly pretty easy because I know how to avoid attacks/time my attacks (the knight hanging out in a corner of 1-1 is a perfect example, he destroyed me at first and now he can't hit me - which is good since he gives 2k souls and good healing items)

What is bothering me is this:
I'm happily trucking through 1-2. I get a fleeting glance of a particular creature as I'm exploring. I look up said creature. Said creatures are important for /upgrading/ various things, as they drop items that otherwise very very rarely unless you do various things to world tendency.
These upgrade items (trying to avoid spoilers) seem to not only be for uber completionist objectives, but to upgrade most any weapon to something close to it's upper potential.
Up on until this point I figured I coud happily ignore the event orchestration and strategy guide reading, but now I'm not so sure. As far as playing style, I hate missables because they specifically punish mine: I like to look around, which often causes one time only events to go off, or in this specific case, something to flee until New Game plus.
The enemies aren't driving me up the wall, the difficulty isn't bothering me, but this sort of thing /does/ bother me. It's 'hardcore' in that it's annoying and expects me to walk on eggshells with a guide in hand at all times.
... and now I'm reading more about tendencies. All because something interesting dashed away from me...

You talking about geckos? You will get more chances to hunt those. It takes a bit of practice. They exist more than once. Use ranged attacks or arrows... or you can run up on them and hit them on their backs. Use the thief ring to get into shooting range.
Geckos start with a 1 counter... it's there one time and if it gets away it's gone... but when you beat a boss etc it adds one to the counter for geckos in that world (beat one boss they have a 2 counter etc). At first, they seem hard to get. But you get better at it. Plus you can put yourself in a better spot to snipe it (as long as it has more on its counter), go to load game, load your profile and the gecko will respawn right there. Snipe away (best not to be right on top of it as it goes buck while you are respawn animating). And that one in 1-2 is nigh impossible to grab. There are tons that are easier.
ALSO, very few ores are available ONLY in geckos and you get lots from lots other places. If you LOVE to explore and do everything, this game has lots for you. If you don't you can still enjoy it and just play it as is.
World tendency events aren't as one time and you can get back to the world tendency and some stuff stays open once the tendency is hit.

Dang guys I must have wasted 5 + hours today on Flamklurker and tehn the 4-2 boss.... i know it ownt matter in the end but I lost 160,000 souls at one point and i am low, like soul level 42 or something..
Pisses me off that would have probably been 12-14 levels.
I may actually summon someone on this guy.. I get him down and then get my behind handed to me... it takes soo long to wear him out on 4-2.

Some bastard invaded me while I was trying to gain souls to level up. :bomb: Luckily, he was spamming the Fire spell and I had the Purple Flame Shield or whatever it's called, so I won pretty easily. Being invaded is intense, hahahaha.

Wow - you guys are talking about levelling up more at 70+? I think I just hit the upper 20's!
I'm SL 210 now on my 6th playthrough and #4 in the US for souls collected lol. I thought I was bad with 100 hours played, but some dude in the pantheon has me beat with 150+.
I just got all four gold trophies tonight and getting the Foe's ring was so easy I did it in like 5 minutes flat. All I have left now for the platinum is farming some of the rare chunks and I've been really avoiding doing it lol. I might have to give this game a rest for Uncharted 2 tomorrow, because I'm starting to burn out a little. The game is getting ridiculously easy at this high of level to the point where I can clear a game without dying, too.

Only idiots rely on magic only, unless they can gib you with a strong spell quickly. The one time I fought a mage, he was just casting blindly at me so I whipped out my dark silver shield, absorbed the dmg and sweet spot killed him. People who PvP in this game are very, very bad lol.
Rather disappointing because PvP was a big factor for me in playing the game. At higher levels, you never get invaded because there's just no competition. :(

Man... Yurt... what a disappointment. Based on his appearance and the fact he kills NPCs if left unchecked, I thought he would be a monster. I free him and can't target him since he is non-hostile. I walk up and a single stab in the back takes him out. His look and voice reminds me of the mouth of Sauron though.

All the NPCs are pretty weak. I went pure black CT tonight and not a single person so much as dented me when I was killing them.

anybody know where i can find a great axe? I want to do some upgrading..
oh and I took a shower and came back and 22 minutes later the old hero is history.. i even resurrected myself thinking there might be a blue orb, but no one was there.
Can we see the orbs in spirit form as well, or do I need to be in body form to even see the blue orbs and offers from Friendly phantoms?

You need a body to see messages from blue phantoms.

I am in soul form and trying to lay a blue eye stone to help.. it wont let me... Am I doing it wrong? its on a level I have already passed.
maybe no living players are playing that section now? So it wont let me waste it.
Well just took out flame lurker.... not too bad.

Well, you can't waste it since it has infinite uses. I know you can't summon players on a level you've already beat so maybe you can't be a phantom on a level you've already beat either.

Yeah, this is correct.
I have been messing around and hoping for pure white in world 3. Doesn't look to be happening. May just go ahead and beat it... any good 1-4 boss strategies to share?

Equip dragon smasher sword that you get in pure white just in front of big dragon boss (2-3) - it's to the left instead of to the right which is the fight.

You can poison him, but I don't think it did enough chip damange to make it worth it. Up to you. Death Cloud doesn't work :bomb: He has insanely high magic def. so don't even bother with other spells (though wiki says firestorm works, I didn't try it). Arrows work great, because you can keep away from him. He has a nasty combo up close. I was doing ~110 damage with my long bow +7 and normal arrows. Gotta learn the timing when to roll though, as he has an attack where he quickly glides accross the state and smacks ya and it takes a good chunk of health. Thankfully the level itself gives you tons of great grass. Killed me twice before I could learn the timing to dodge (and learn that my moon spear doesn't do more than tickle him...).

That depends: do you want to cheese him or fight him normal? Normal fight, just have warding on and go in swinging; he really doesn't hit that hard either way, but you can stay in longer with it on. Just beat on him until you have to back off when he drops his sword in the ground. By back off, I mean run all as far away as possible.
To cheese it, keep the Thief's ring on and just hide downstairs until his back is to you. Creep up behind him and cast poison cloud. He will not react and you will just have to recast it every 8-10% of his health when it wears off. Takes about 20 minutes to kill him this way, but it's the safest method since there's 0 chance of losing a SL. I personally cheese him because if I fuck up, it's going to cost me ~320k souls.

I thought you could use magic no matter what class you were as long as you had the wand. Where does one get this and how do you get the magic or healing spells?

You have to be level 10 in magic and intelligence to start learning spells from the NPCs in the Nexus. Level 10 Faith for miracles. You can get a wooden catalyst in 1-2. A silver catalyst in 3-1. And a talisman of beasts that cast magic and miracles in 2-2 if you have pure black world tendency from BP Scirvir.

As long as you go slowly and keep your shield up surviving isn't that bad. Also using magic (or arrows I suppose) from a distance doesn't hurt. Read messages on the ground too, they can be very helpful (sometimes)

I just found one in 2-2. Just search the lava section of the level. I think it's in the lower section (after you go down the elevator) and somewhat near the entrance.

ZOMG. So, I was cheesing 1-4 boss. I got him down to about 30% left in his health. I say, look at him just standing there, he doesn't even turn around when I get super close. I'll just finish him off. Tried to back stab, missed, got destroyed. Luckily I only lost 1 soul level. This time it's all cheese...

Reading messages can only be done online right(your talking about messages other players leave on the ground?)? I am assuming from this and things iv heard from others its pretty important to play this online/alot easier?
