You be quiet. We will always want SHENMUE 3. You and your habadashery can just shove it.

And yes yakuza 3 looks good. But then again, so did Shining Force Neo when it was announced.

Wholly freaking cow -- that trailer is epic!

Real Cabaret management, amazing graphics, among other factors leave me wanting this game badly.

I guess Ryu ga Gotoku KENZAN! will have to tide me over till this one comes over State-side

I don't imagine the game appeals to people who arn't already open to the idea of English subtitles, given the non-traditional setting of the game. So Sega could indeed save lots of money by not dubbing it.

My only concern with a non-dub regards the karaoke mini-game in Yakuza 3. I'd love it if they kept the songs in Japanese (I may even recognize some of them) but not sure how that would be received in America. I'd personally be open for Sega to completely remove that mini-game if it preserves the original Japanese dub since I think the voice actors in Yakuza 2 were absolutely fantastic.

I totally <3 Kiryuu's and Kaoru's voice actors.

Stunningly Japanese! Could this be the ultimate Yakuza title?

If Sega brought the first two over, I don't see why they wouldn't likewise release it in America -- especially since it must cost Sega an absolute bundle to create this game. Cutting out the dub and going pure sub would save significant amounts of time and money.

I just watched the full 20 minute video in high definition and am TOTALLY blown away. The updated graphics, surprise antagonist, additional mini-games, and modifications to battle system leave me very excited.

One would wonder just how much money Sega is throwing down on this obviously ambitious title, but keep in mind, they have numerous corporate sponsors to help foot to the bill. One of the big pluses of placing the story in real-world locations.

I really hope this is the direction that more games take. I certainly don't mind plunking down 1100 fake yen for a Pepsi as opposed to 1100 fake yen for a rice ball to replenish my health, and if it can help Sega make these monster budget games without breaking the bank (I'm talking to you, Shenmue) then more power to 'em.

Such practices can be considered a slippery slope to some gamers, however. Their main contention being "If companies get royalties for advertising, why not pass the savings onto consumers since our buying the game and resulting popularity are why you're getting royalties in the first place?"

Back when this first starting happening (I think around Battlefield X), I also felt this way. But after hearing many games being canceled or scaled back for the PS3 (and 360 to a degree) due to ever increasing development costs, then I support such practices if I get the full vision the developers hope for. The ads can't be so abrasive that they actually distract me from the game.

I do admit that, after playing Yakuza 2, I had a hankerin' for some Suntory Coffee. I'm such a weak-willed person! :-#

I hope the manage a hostess club minigame is actually worth it this time. I spent tons of money and what did I get? A jacket and 1000 experience points. La-dee-shaq-fuing-da! Also, I'm getting kind of tired of fighting the knife-wielding you-know-who. The fights are never fun since I spend most of my time watching him dash around like a jackass.

On the plus side, the transition into random encounters is really nice. I like how you actually fight where you stand instead of another location that sort of looks like the street you were just on. Oh, and is the camera entirely player controlled now?

I'm sure there is, I don't care about BC as much as I thought I did. It'll just be a bit of a hassle to ship, only thing keeping me from selling it so far. Sony needs to get some of these Japanese games to the U.S. market quicker. It would add much needed variety to the game selection. Hopefully along with this, Way of the Samurai 3 will also come stateside.

I have not played any of the other Yakuza games, so I decided to try out the demo of Yakuza 3 since I have heard so many great things about the previous games.

Is there anyway to turn on English subtitles or something? If not oh well.

Even though I did not understand a damn thing, I enjoyed it. The fighting was a lot of fun. There was just enough insanity and brutality for this to feel unique. If I knew what was going on—in reference to me not knowing Japanese—I surmise that I would of enjoyed it even more.

That could be because it's daytime over there when it's prime gaming time over here. Less people online in Japan means faster download speeds. Or it could be that PSN in Japan just has better connectivity (*shakes fists at uber cool Japanese!*)

I dunno, Yakuza 2 apparently sold a totally abyssmal 24K copies. If the game makes it's money back in Japan, then Sega might just give up and assume it's too "cultural" to bother bringing over. Plus, Sega is not doing well financially and may decide to stick to the "safe" route of cranking out more shitty Sonic games.

It would be a shame since the game's striking graphical improvements would be easy to market as a PlayStation-exclusive, and the game's core gameplay is pretty solid overall.

I've got to say..just spent almost an hour with the game, and the cut scenes look really nice but the gameplay..eeeh I'm kind of surprised how..I don't want to say crappy, but just...not great it looks. All the gameplay doesn't look too hot.

I'm playing through 2 now, on chapter 5, and it's good....it's just REALLY similar to the first one. Something happens, run around town trying to find side0quests, go to mission destination, something happens, run around town looking for side quests...repeat. If the Heat moves, soundtrack, and Kazuma didn't crack me up so much I wouldn't care much about the game. As it stands, I'll want to play 3 to get some closure.

2 points worth noting:

Sega is selling Yakuza branded sake in Japan starting tomorrow
Someone on another forum got in touch with Sega NA's marketing team. They claim that Yakuza would be localized if there's a "strong enough internet community reaction" to the game.

Soooo I was walking through the city, buying some items and whatnot, and a guy comes up to me and puts his arm around me...then licks my face. WTF? A fight breaks out after that and I beat the crap out of him. So weird.

even if sega doesn't decide to bring it stateside for the possible financial risks, couldn't sony offer to pick it up for localization and distribution? It would seem like a no brainer to bring it over.

'Cause that kinda stuff happens all the time in Tokyo. It's true!

It looks like the recent launch has been successful -- here is some info from Joystiq.com and IGN, along with few pic.

Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 (Yakuza 3) may lack an exclamation point in its title -- unlike predecessor Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan! -- but that doesn't mean the excitement over it is any less. In fact, Sega made sure that Yakuza 3's February 26 launch would go off with a bang (figuratively, not literally! No gangster shootings here) with signing sessions and free swag give-aways.

IGN was in Japan to capture the festivities, snapping pictures of the crowd and checking out the signing sessions with Producer Toshihiro Nagoshi. Surprisingly, Toshihiro went around to three different retail stores in the Tokyo area for launch day signing events. That's some love for the hardcore gamer right there. Some stores were raffling off prizes such as post cards, clear files and limited edition Yakuza t-shirts. Check out IGN (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/957/957528p1.html) for more pics.

Yakuza 3 is great, but it's a little disappointing that it lacks an more open-world feel and less of an improvement over 2 than it should be.

I'd really like to see a complete review by someone who has played through from beginning to end and beaten the game.

Y2 sold abysmally here. Not exactly a no-brainer.

Yakuza 3 has sold very well in its first week of release -- so well that it's has the highest release figures of all the Yakuza games.

From Kotaku.com (http://kotaku.com/5164606/ryu-ga-gotoku-3-yakuza-3-sells-372000-copies)
Ryu Ga Gotoku: 130,000 copies
Ryu Ga Gotoku 2: 282,000 copies
Ryu Ga Gotoku KENZAN!: 178,000 copies
Ryu Ga Gotoku 3: 372,000 copies

And it helped Sony sell a heapin' amount of PS3s (http://kotaku.com/5165254/playstation-3-outsells-everything-else-in-japan-thanks-to-yakuza-influence)
* PlayStation 3 - 36,513
* Nintendo DSi - 35,827
* PSP - 35,588
* Wii - 17,876
* Xbox 360 - 11,795
* Nintendo DS Lite - 11,774
* PlayStation 2 - 5,099

I'm glad it has sold so well, and hope it continues to do well. But then again -- MGS4 dropped 85% the following week. Let's hope Sega has made a sizeable return on this game (sales + sponsorship), and will consider releasing this internationally.

If this bundle came out in America, I'd finally buy a Ps3.

Wow -- the thread has been dormant for a whole month.

Monthly sales figures just came out from Japan (http://kotaku.com/5204775/what-were-the-top-ten-selling-games-in-march), and this title has sold whopping 459,786 units since it's launch on February 26th!

For the sake of comparison...

1. Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 (Yakuza 3) PS3
Launch: 2/26/09
March Period Sales: 459,786 units
Life-To-Date Total: 459,786 units

2. Resident Evil 5 PS3
Launch: 3/5/09
March Period Sales: 428,545 units
Life-To-Date Total: 428,545 units

4. Mario & Luigi RPG3!!! DS
Launch: 2/11/09
March Period Sales: 189,227 units
Life-To-Date Total: 467,891 units

It's sold nearly as many copies as an RPG on the DS that launched two weeks earlier?! WOW! :whee: Now if only Sega would release this game with English subtitles (be it an Asian or European version, I don't care!)

Isn't PS3 at 3 million units sold over there? So about 1/6 of PS3 owners bought it, in the first week? :whee:
