Oh god that sale was so fucking amazing. Thanks for reminding me. Got Disgaea PS2, Shadow Hearts, Rez, and a ton of other good, rare games for five dollars each.

That was the god of all sales. I think my record for buying games at one store was 37. They had to ring it up across two transactions. So much good stuff.

Phantasy Star Online (Gamecube)
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Xbox and PS2)
Doom 2 (GBA, yes I had been looking for it)
the list goes on and on.

The 2004 $5 clearance sale was a fond memory but also taught me just because a game is $5 doesn't mean it's worth buying.

Don't blame the job market, blame the employees who put all their eggs in the "no marketable skills" basket. I hope they enjoy their future careers in fast food management, if they can even make it to management. Circuit City employees were the dumbest, mouth-breathing bottom-feeders of retail.
You're a bitch ass piece of crap, plain and simple.

Just because you didn't have success in a retail store (tell me a store that does hire people who know their products...) doesn't mean that you have to make such a blanket statement that makes yourself look like an ass.

Are you serious???? People lives are going to be effected!

Pitiful...

What a fuckin' douchebag you are, my friend. Let's generalize all the people who work for a company as something that you have only had the fortune to come across. One of my best friend's boyfriend has been with that company for a long time in Charlotte, knows his shit, and treats customers like gold. Do you want to tell him that he's one of " the dumbest, mouth-breathing bottom-feeders of retail" and that it's ok for him to not have a job now? He worked at CC because he's good withpeople, was good at his job (the man has sold a shit load of TVs to people over the years and knows his shit), got decent benefits, got a decent discount, and made damn good bank (and still does as of this moment).

News flash: people in the retail world are NOT all bottom-feeders. They are people who work, just like you and me. This whole idea of a fuckin' "holier then thou" attitude towards retail is bullshit and you know it.

Fuck you, my friend, fuck you.

In other news, and back on topic (as long as I don't get banned for this for the first time in all the years I've been on cag), I'm hitting up CC on monday to see what the damage is. I'm honestly hoping that dvdr's go down in price, and maybe I can grab a discounted stand alone dvd-recorder. Screw games!

Circuitcity is down, now I will never see good deals at Bestbuy anymore just like Blu-ray wins over HD-DVD.

I wouldn't say that. The economy still sucks and BB still needs to draw people into the store to buy electronic products they probably don't need right now.

The only thing I'll miss is the PM'ing when CC undercut BB (and everyone else) on certain stuff and rare CC super clearance on games.

Also, BR is slowly coming down in price and you can still find good deals/sales on BR discs. DVD is still sales king, so BR can't afford to stay a premium priced product forever.

Their website is back up and it will answer most of the questions.
http://www.circuitcity.com/closed.html

What about returns and refunds?

Customers can return products they purchased prior to January 16 for a 14-day period for exchange or refunds. All other terms of return policy are in force.

Crap, I was planning on returning a RROD 360 that was bought during the holiday return period. So the last day to return is Jan. 29th? Damn, I wonder if they'll try to screw me by saying it's been opened or something. :cold:

neocisco
01-17-2009, 02:24 AM
They shouldn't. When my store closed we honored all returns for the 14 day period. Just make sure you have ALL of the accessories. BTW, there's a good chance that the same system you return will eventually be sold as open box.

I'm a little confused by all this. Their website will be re-opening, right? Because I have a $10 digital gift card to use and no local stores. I hadn't used it yet because I couldn't find a good deal.

I also had a SFIV pre-order locked in at $39.99. If that doesn't ship, then I basically just pre-spent $10 (see above card).

I imagine their website will reopen with crazy deals. Hopefully I can use my gift card and get something.

YMMV I guess, I have dealt with way more issues at Best Buy over stupid stuff then at Circuit City. Without too much detail, Best Buy's refusal to honor their own coupon even though it was legit, managers telling me I can't use Best Buy Bucks on a PSP game because it is considered a DVD, the next year being told at multiple stores I can't use more than $3 of Best Buy Bucks on a game despite having the rules with me specifically saying otherwise and having to explain this to managers, being told that I was not allowed to buy 2 penny items etc.

Sad day indeed. When it came down to video games, CC was amongst the best. Best Buy a few years back had some good clearance deals once in a while, but I haven't seen one in ages. I agree with a fellow CAG about they jacking up their prices should CC take the final plunge. My biggest peeve though is the service, or lack there of.
CC cheapass memory for the road: A few years ago, I picked up a copy of Beyond Good and Evil for the Gamecube for $1.99!

I remember that $1.99 clearance, that was almost as good as the $4.99 sale.

My best find at CC was the Star Wars Clone Wars/Tetris Worlds XBox Combo Disc. Tagged $99.99, rang up for a penny. I would have never known had it not been for this site. The manager couldn't believe it but let me buy it.

Does anyone know if the earlier 155 stores closings now will really make their prices lower (Games were only $3 off or something when i went there a month ago)?

Well I Just Read It On The New York Times

"The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November but had hoped to emerge in a slimmed-down form, said instead that it would liquidate all its stores and assets. Most of the chain’s 34,000 store employees will be laid off. Closing sales will begin as early as Saturday and will last until the merchandise is gone or about the end of March."

So, they couldn't help with ANYTHING. I asked about a wii game, she was like Oh they sold out...I said NOT THE Wii system, I want games, oh we don't got wii's.

The sale will absolutely suck for the first week, if not two weeks. The discounts will be very light because they know the news of a liquidation will bring people in and they'll get the most money in the first few weeks.

Will the still price match? Only thing I want from them are games and movies. I know the BDs they have are all around 30 bucks so if Best buy is selling it for 22 I wonder if CC will still PM it to 22 then give the 10% off. However Amazon will chances are still have it for less.

I'm not the guy you're questioning, but almost all of my worst shopping experiences belong to CC.

CC is the only store where I've been in line with multiple other customers while there were absolutely no cashiers at the registers. They were all gathered up talking together and not one of them decided to do their job until some angry lady went over there asking for a manager.

CC is the only store where I've actually asked someone who works their for help with something and they responded with a simple "I'm not sure" and then walked away from me.

During the 2004 summer clearance sale, one of the store associates was picking up a stack of like 20 games to hide during his work time. Didn't know that they got paid to hoard games for themselves.

Beyond clearance sales, I've never had a good experience at CC. I can't imagine why so many people are praising CC; maybe the two stores near me where the exception, and the rest were flawless...but I'm guessing that isn't the case. I feel bad for the people who are losing their job; but in my opinion, this company should have gone under a while ago. Their customer support was complete garbage.

For all the people who had negative experiences at circuit city I'm sure there's probably a lot of people who had that same experience at Best Buy. What's worst is that now we'll just have best buy which hardly runs any good videogame deals(only recently have they had some good deals).

Damn this sucks, there were doing some good videogame game deals in the past few months, and my local circuit city was great. Sorry to see them go.

Not in any major store closing I've ever been to; they seem to have a set plan for how they do their mark downs in order to have the placed cleared out in a certain time frame.

Prices start high, get a bit better and then finally get good. Problem is by the time they get good, mostly anything good is gone. People see a certain percentage off and they go crazy for it. I've gotten some good stuff from a couple store closings before, but seems people buy a lot of the good stuff before it's really even a deal. I had a hell of a time sifting through my local media play when it closed; it was like a giant trash heap in areas in there.

This wasn't just at your store.

I've gone to CC many times over the past few months to have something similar happen. There was either a congregation of employees huddled around each other talking (and no one in any of the departments), or there was a huge line of people and the only place they could checkout was at customer service. The latter seemed to happen the most often. I've left the store empty handed many times because I either couldn't find someone to ring up my purchase, or I was disgusted at the 10+ person deep lines that weren't moving.

The only thing I'm more worried about with CC going out of business is the huge gaping holes that it will leave in these shopping centers. One of my local shopping centers has lost CompUSA, Ashely Furniture, Friedman's Jewelers, Goody's, and now Circuit City all within a years time frame. It'll be hard, if not impossible to fill all of that retail space.

Can you haggle during liquidation?
On their website they state this:

There will be clearance pricing, but specific discounts are not being announced. All sale prices are at the discretion of the liquidator. Prices are non-negotiable and all adjustments must be approved by the liquidator's on-site managers.

So, I take it like this....managers know the longer this liquidation is, the more they can milk out pay wise. So, they might as well just follow protocol. BUT, I'd wait till Feb, and then start going "Yea, I'd buy it if you take an extra 10% off...."

blackjaw
01-17-2009, 10:48 AM
It'll be the same thing as the CompUSA liquidation...pennies/a few dollars off. There might be a deal hidden in all the crap, but for the most part liquidation sales are pretty worthless.

honestly though, I could take out CC and replace it with MANY retail stores! you come to my town and I could show you retail stores where you literally have to throw rocks at the employees to get them to even ring you up!

THEY DON'T EVEN WANT TO TAKE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!

I think CC just got the comcast rep - a big company that had isolated problems that grew into huge internet tales thanks to bloggers and constant internet posters. When BB is the lone kid in the sandbox, they're going to get the same complaints. Overnight it's going to be fun to complain about them...

Speak for yourself my friend. I love CC and all the great deals I got there. I will truly miss that store. Best Buy is a better looking store, but most of them are jackasses in the sense that there are a million blue shirts walking around but no one is doing jack and when you ask a question, it's like you asked to borrow a million dollars or something. That is the kind of attitude that I would get from some workers there. I developed a good relationship with most of the guys and girls at the CC near me. I will truly miss them.

Just came back from Circuit City, it's 10 percent off of everything except the Verizon Wireless phone stuff in the store. Not too many great deals there, was looking to get a TV for my bedroom, so this came at the right time.

Also before you buy you may want to remember that all sales are final. Some customers were getting in an argument with one of the workers over the "ALL SALES FINAL" sign. Poor girl looked like she was about to burst out into tears.

Circuit City may not have been the best store or had the best customer service, but it was probably my store of choice to go to. They had pretty much the same stuff as Best Buy and were never as busy. I really started doing a lot of my shopping there when the Best Buy right down the road from it moved to a much busier place that was harder to get in and get out. I usually went to Circuit City knowing exactly what I wanted and was able to park close, get in and get out.

I'll always appreciate Circuit City for their good video game clearance sales. I'll never forget the $4.99 sale from a couple of years ago.

I hate to say it but I imagine those are now void if you can't use them. When things go under everything gets crazy. They won't be getting new games in and they are scrounging for every penny they can get so refunds are probably not going to happen because the liquidators are in charge now.

I feel bad for those losing their jobs.

But good riddance to the deserted cash registers and receipts that are probably made from a whole tree. those things are needlessly gigantic.

It's so strange that everybody has the same experience with deserted registers. I don't get how that can happen at nearly every store. I've shopped at the store at multiple locations in IL and WI--all the same deal, nobody to check out! It's like corporate put out a memo that said "stay away from the registers"

The customer service was horrible at my CC, but sometimes the sale would make it worth the effort. I'll miss them for that. I'm also worried about what the lack of competition will do to BB sale prices. I think that this recession is far worse than anything we've had to deal with since the great depression and I hope things turn around soon. I feel bad for everyone who is losing their jobs right now. At the same time, I hope I don't join them.

This is posted on their web site:
http://www.circuitcity.com/closed.html

Circuit City would like to thank all of the customers who have shopped with us over the past 60 years. Unfortunately, we announced on January 16, 2009, that we are going out of business.

Please check back later for updates about the status of our website. In the meantime, we hope the information below will help answer most of your questions.
What's going on at Circuit City?

* Due to challenges to our business and the continued bleak economic environment, Circuit City is going out of business and the company's assets will be liquidated to pay off creditors.
* The process was extremely difficult and we were left with no other choice but to liquidate. Circuit City had a proud heritage of serving the public for 60 years and we deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our associates, our customers and the communities where we have operated stores and other facilities.
* We had hoped to be able to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as a stronger, more competitive company and we made significant progress during the reorganization to improve our business. Unfortunately, the economic climate is so poor that we have no choice other than liquidation.
* Liquidators will start arriving in our 567 stores across the U.S. over the weekend, and closing sales will start as early as Saturday, January 17. Closing sales will run as long as it takes to sell existing inventory, but are expected to wrap up by the end of March. When the liquidation sales are completed, the stores will be closed.
* At the company's corporate offices in Richmond, Virginia, a small staff will remain on duty during the completion of the liquidation process; most associates will be relieved of their duties immediately.
* Consistent with federal labor laws, Circuit City associates are receiving 60-days notice of the termination of their employment. Those who stay on to help with the liquidation, of course, will receive pay and benefits. Those who are dismissed earlier will be receiving pay and benefits for the 60-day period beginning January 16, 2009.
* Associates at our company headquarters will be asked to come back on Monday, January 19, to find out more about their status and to retrieve their personal belongings.

Are you also shutting down your operations in Canada?

* No, our Canadian operations will continue. They are not affected by the liquidation of Circuit City's U.S. operations. The Canadian operations employ approximately 3,000 associates.

How many people are losing their jobs as a result of this action?

* Circuit City employs approximately 34,000 associates in the U.S.

Can you provide some background on Circuit City?

* Founded in 1949 as the Wards Company, Circuit City is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. At the time of the liquidation announcement (January 16, 2009), the company operated 567 stores in 153 media markets in the U.S. and approximately 765 retail stores and dealer outlets in Canada.
* For a timeline history of the company, go to http://investor.circuitcity.com, and click on Company Information.

Will Circuit City stores continue to accept Circuit City gift cards?

* Yes, customers holding Circuit City gift cards may redeem them at full value at our stores during the liquidation sales. Once the stores are closed and the company is out of business, the gift cards will have no value.

Are Circuit City's extended warranties affected by the liquidation?

* No. Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans® (extended warranties) have been backed by third-party independent companies for more than 15 years and as a result, are not impacted by Circuit City's closing.
* Currently, all Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans are fully backed by the Assurant Solutions companies. Assurant Solutions operates as Federal Warranty Service Corporation, Sureway, Inc., and United Service Protection, Inc. Assurant Solutions is part of Assurant, Inc. (NYSE: AIZ), and its extended service contacts are backed by an Assurant insurance subsidiary rated A "Excellent" by A.M. Best Co.

When will the liquidation sales begin?

* Liquidation sales begin as early as Saturday, January 17, 2009, and will last as long as it takes to sell through the merchandise at each of the stores. We expect the sales to wrap up by the end of March 2009.

How much will merchandise be marked down, and can customers negotiate prices for the merchandise?

* There will be clearance pricing, but specific discounts are not being announced. All sale prices are at the discretion of the liquidator. Prices are non-negotiable and all adjustments must be approved by the liquidator's on-site managers.

What payment types will be accepted at the liquidation stores?

* Stores in liquidation will accept cash, Circuit City gift cards and most credit cards. Personal checks will not be accepted. All sales are final.

Will Circuit City's price matching policy or the One Price PromiseSM apply during the liquidation sale?

* Because the liquidation company is in charge of the sales at the closing stores, their policies are in force. So, One Price Promise does not apply during liquidation events, nor does the company's Unbeatable Price Guarantee. All sales are final.

What about returns and refunds?

* Customers can return products they purchased prior to January 16 for a 14-day period for exchange or refunds. All other terms of return policy are in force.
* When closing sales begin on or around January 17, 2009, all sales will be final.

Will delivery service be available for products purchased from liquidation stores?

* No. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide delivery services for products purchased from liquidation stores.

Will Circuit City offer home theater installations during the closing sale?

* Yes, we will continue to offer home theater installations during our closing sales.

Will Circuit City offer PC services and repairs at liquidation stores during the closing sale?

* Services already underway at the liquidation stores will be completed promptly, but no additional jobs will be accepted at these stores.

Will car electronics installations be available at liquidation stores during the closing sale?

* No new car installations will be offered.

Will Circuit City's extended warranties still be available on products purchased from liquidation stores?

* Yes, we're making no changes to our Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans®. Coverage is national and purchases will still be protected just as they always were.
* Circuit City Advantage Protection Plans® have been backed by third-party independent companies for more than 15 years and as a result, are not impacted by Circuit City's bankruptcy or liquidation.
Best Co.

What if a customer purchased products at one of the closing stores and the product needs service?

* For products covered under the manufacturer's warranty, customers should call the manufacturer.
* For products covered under Circuit City Advantage®, guests can call the toll-free number that is printed on the bottom of the product receipt.

Why the hell are hordes ascending on the store the first day of the liquidation? Don't they realize there will be no deals, at least for a while? Prices are going to be raised before they get lowered.

I'm not questioning anyone's actions, just giving a heads up.

PMs are out the window now.

I know it would be if it was somthing CC had and you tried to get it PMed at BB but even if say Ninja Gaiden II I was to go to CC and have them PM it for what best buy has it for. CC wont even PM stuff? That really makes it not even worth going their now. Every thing at MSRP and only 10% off. Hell a 30 dollar BD will be 27 bucks. even BB is around that price and I will get points for it.

From what the sales person told me at the local one (east side madison) its 10% off everything, 20% off CD's and DVDs, and 30% off cables and stuff like that. One guy told me that yes, it hasnt officially started, but they are selling for the discounted amount starting today.

If it's like CompUSA, the discount on systems and computers is 5% to start, and they're generally the first things to go.

I was just at the Circuit City store in Jordan Landing, UT.

The sale was 10% off everything, excluding clearance items. Clearance items get no discount (there was no sign for this, which pissed me off). All the prices were current to their last revision (they did not raise them back to MSRP).

Also, the clerk there told me that they were advised to refuse taking gift cards or rewards coupons, or any discount whatsoever. They would not even let you use your Circuit City Rewards credit card to pay for the items.

I see these guys are going to leave us some more nice dick memories.

aww, that's balls. that would've been cool to snag one at like 20-30% off

and i for one would like to say that as much as i disliked circuit city for being so disorganized and difficult to deal with, as a consumer i am getting worried that the lack of competition in B&M stores is going to lead to higher prices for us all. i mean, i've been moving more and more online for all my electronic needs, but sometimes you just really need something that day. and i'm not too big on buying large items like TVs online. there's just something about it that makes me rather buy it instore and ship it home in my van. but that's just me.

It's so strange that everybody has the same experience with deserted registers. I don't get how that can happen at nearly every store. I've shopped at the store at multiple locations in IL and WI--all the same deal, nobody to check out! It's like corporate put out a memo that said "stay away from the registers"

Clearly it was company policy, because that's what I always experienced too. Woe be upon the poor customer who actually needs to return something or get some other sort of service, because they'd have to wait in a huge line of people buying stuff. Or not, if the store was deserted. Which was often the case. They should have just started selling tumbleweeds.

went to one of my local stores this morning, about an hour after they opened. Was crazy, lots of people and huge lines. I thought for sure there must be some incredible deals if the check out lines were that long. Walked around, and basically it was like 10% or the sales price, which ever was cheaper. I asked about the video games, and was told by a couple associates that there were no discounts on those. WTF!!??

All those folks waiting in line are a bunch of idiots for 10% off from a store that you can't even return it to if something is wrong. I felt like going to all of them and tell them they could do much better. Idiots!

I'll try back closer to the end. Might not be as much stuff, but may find some sweet deals. Folks buying today are a bunch of Noobs when it comes to find deals.

Clearly you don't understand that EVERY chain has underperforming stores. It comes from management. My store had good managers that were on the floor selling as much as everyone else. They stressed good customer service and we provided it. We walked the customers to the item they needed. We explained the features and checked them out on the floor so they didn't have to wait in a line forever. I can't wait until we find your ass in the unemployment with all of us. Your attitude will put you there sooner than you think.

i'll second this guy, but lets try to be civil right now, at the very least :hot:.

but yeah, i liked my circuit city. other than the out of orderness of the dvds, cds an games, everything about my circuit city was great. customer service was just as annoying as the other stores, and their prices were mostly better than Worst Buy's prices. I always price matched over to Worst Buy when i didn't have a chance to trek over to CC, which was farther.

I'll try back closer to the end. Might not be as much stuff, but may find some sweet deals. Folks buying today are a bunch of Noobs when it comes to find deals.these people seriously mess it up for the rest of us. like the clearance lasts only one day and everything is gonna be gone.

I just left my local store. The place was a complete and utter zoo with shelves already looking bare in some places (probably due to credit issues in filling inventory). Half the people leaving didn't buy anything, but still surprising to see so many people over a 10% sale. All pricing had to be done manually as the point of sale system wasn't updated. The clerk said that some PC accessories were up to 30% as well but I'm not sure how that would work. They should have price check scanners, which is another reason for their demise....too many games with incorrect prices that might have otherwise sold.

My purchases:
* Blazing Angels 2 - PC - $7.80
* Mass Effect - PC - $4.73

Mass Effect rang up $19.99, but the register person just price overrode. What do they care, they aren't going to be working there anyway-

unforunately because they have a job, and don't see how hard it is in this economy once you've lost your job. I've been laid off for 14 weeks now. I met with the labor boards and all and they can't help me. I was a delivery driver, but its not like i had a Class A, so most of the jobs that are drivers are for 18 Wheelers. I'm willing to learn in any sense of the form if its taught to me. I'm not old(well not that old) 25 so i feel for these people that are losing them. The ones talking disrespect however are the ones who feel safe, but nobody is safe as some of them might see.

Our store was 10% across the board
CD / DVD's 20%
30% on furniture (like entertainment centers)

All for a lousy 10%.

34,000 people out of jobs because people think that there is a recession going on and people were buying crap like they had just won the fucking lottery. There is NO recession....not with people spending the way they were today.

I should have known when I noticed everyone was leaving empty handed it was simply a herd mentality thing going on and I become part of it. I second this. I went to one this morning in San Antonio and same deal. Parking lot was full and most of the people coming out of the store were empty handed. However, inside the store, there was quite a line. I tried to observe what people were buying and nothing stood out. A few printers, some ink, a bunch of Wii accessories and games. Nothing on sale. While I was over at the cameras, one of the employees was being asked about the liquidation and he said that the liquidator hasn't come into the store and that it should happen next week. He said that the crowd was "business as usual." I don't work at CC but I'm going to have to call BS on that statement. I've been in there on Saturdays and the line is never the way it was today. The employee said that today was the last day they were honoring their ad so that's why people were buying sale items. I don't know what was going on, people thinking they could buy and price match once the percentage sales start? Or maybe they just figured that those items would be gone.

So far nothing at all. Prices are still the same, people are freaking out and buying like mad.

People were buying crap that you can get online for much cheaper. Failure of a clearance. They had Rainbow Six 1 for the PS3, a Platinum title ($30 reg.) for $40. Wtf, over?

All the CC stores closed in my state about a couple months ago, and I was seeing the same things. They were marking up the games, and all their items in general and then slapping on the 10% off signs to make it SEEM like you were getting a deal. Nothing good was left when they started increasing the percent off. Oh well

They could be using their gift cards before its too late.

went to CC here in miami and it only had a lousy 20% off on DVD's so far(and i guess 10% off on everything else). Seriously not worth it!!!! So after leaving CC disappointed AGAIN i went to FYE in miami beach were they have 50% off(way better than 20% dont you think?) and got me some stuff. No wonder CC went out of business. They dont know how to do things correctly(even when going out of buisiness!) lol

I went to the CC in Portsmouth, NH, today. Despite the signs on the side of the road leading up to it claiming 30% off, as far as I can tell, it was 20% max. Video games were all 10% off. One of the associates said they may be down to 40% come next week, though. Sounded more like speculation than anything.

Will the website offer any deals? Or will it continue to exist as is like CompUSA?

I'm only sad the competition just got smaller. As many times as I've tried to go in there, I've always left empty-handed. I recently bought a 16GB Sandisk thumb drive from them for $40 on Black Friday, and that's it for the last several years. I'll be watching though - it's hard to get really good deals when people are willing to pay more.

34,000 people out of jobs because people think that there is a recession going on and people were buying crap like they had just won the fucking lottery. There is NO recession....not with people spending the way they were today.
TBW

You're about half right. There is a recession going on and it's being made worse by the fact that everyone thinks it is the most terrible thing in the world. If someone (probably have to be a Walmart if the government won't do it) would man up and do the business of creating more jobs and paying higher wages for them we'd make it through the shake out of the ridiculous economic fantasy we've been living in and come out on the other side alright. But that's not the case because people in America are idiots.

You've also forgotten that those idiots (will go nuts over 10% if it says "clearance") have credit cards and are accustomed to using them.

From what I've seen everything was pretty much the same

The thing is, Tiger Direct(whose PC's you have probably seen on their infomercials for them)bought 16 of CompUSA's stores and the rights to the name. So THEY are the ones running CompUSA's site nowadays.

In the case of Circuit City, no interested buyers(though there were interested parties) came along and scooped up any portion of the chain, so once the liquidation sales are done the chain is effectively dead.

This is unlike chains like Montgomery Ward(also known as JUST Ward's), Service Merchandise and several others who continued on with a storefront/website but NO brick & mortar stores.

If you want a perspective on how many chains have slipped into oblivion, Wikipedia has an article/list of defunct chains here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_store_chains_of_the_United_States)

If you want some history on some of these chains, I definitely recommend this (http://www.deadmalls.com/) site.

For example, do you know that the store chain once known as Woolworth's in the US is now the chain we know as Foot Locker?

I know there's many younger users on the site who may be like 'what the hell is Woolworth's?', but the older members will get the name references.

Just got back from my CC. The games were 20%. M$ point cards were not discountable items (>.<). I did pick up "Condemned: Criminal Origins" for $10 and I thought about getting "Just Cause" for $10; but nothing else tickled my fancy at 20% off especially with most the games being over priced.

It's hard to believe that in a month or two... CC will no longer exist. I'm thinking about going just to see what they have. I'm not expecting to find anything though, these closeouts are usually terrible but people still buy up all the good stuff early.

maddmoney
01-17-2009, 05:07 PM
I think it will purposely start slow at 10% and work its way up to 70% all the while filtering better items to larger corporations in the same business. So when an item reaches a set level below CC cost other entities will buy the items leaving only junky or obsolete items for the rest of us to pick through. Not to say there wont be good deals, but not 50" plasma TVs for $300.00.

As far as games---I doubt you can find either Wii or Ds systems. Same for first party Nintendo games once you get past 20% or cost.

I remember experiencing the same issues you all are reporting when CompUSA went out of business. Their prices were still garbage even when they were close to closing up shop. It's all about the mentality they instill in people with, "LIQUIDATION SALE! EVERYTHING MUST GO!". It's more of a bait and switch than anything. Hey we'll get you in the store because you think you'll get some cheap dvds, but then you end up buying that laptop you've been going back and forth on for several months. The one I just came back from is the same thing. Also nothing really worth picking up. I was going to try and get them to PM some stuff but the place was to packed to walk around in and talk to someone. Yes you can still PM stuff there. All you have to do is find someone with the liquidation company and if they say ok then you can get it PMed. However finding that person is the issue. I didn't see them and at some places they my not be there for another week or so. I hate to see this place go for the most part because of all the jobs lost. Makes me wish I would have shopped there more but with the prices on Amazon and no tax or shipping depending on where you live and how much you order is a lot better then what they want for the stuff. even if i don't get it for a few weeks.

same sales prices here in Foxboro, MA

Rego Park, New York also had the same sale. I browsed through the DVDs/CDs section and everything was way overpriced so the 20% was really meaningless. The prices on Amazon still beat CC's clearance prices. I also out of curiosity browsed through the PC section and didn't see anything apple related. I guess that stuff was all sold to a corporate buyer or returned.

The lines were incredibly long and black friday-esque. I really couldn't believe people were standing on line for 20% over priced CDs and DVDS. No thanks!

I remember being in my late teens when I bought 3-4 Woodstock 1994 shirts there on clearance for $5 each and passing up 6-10 copies of General Chaos for the Genesis back during their closing sale.

But I did get a pack of 3.5" floppies for my old computer for under a buck during the final days of their closeout/liquidation sales.

About the best place in the whole store though, was their cafeteria. They made the best patty melt platter around here for the longest time.

In an interesting note(and I don't know how many will recognize this name of an old store chain), the JJ Newberry(commonly referred to as JUST Newberry's) store chain was started about 30-40 miles from here in a little town called Stroudsburg(PA).

You have to remember that this kind of clearance sale draws people who otherwise would never walk into a Circuit City and have very little clue about what prices were like before the clearance or what a good deal is. To them, it actually is a good deal because they always pay retail price.

I agree with you about CompUSA. I didn't find a thing at mine because stupid people grabbed all the worthwhile games when they hit around 20% off (even though these weren't very good deals). By the time the clearance rate got to something worthwhile, the only games left were ones I wouldn't buy at any price.

Went to Northridge, CA (happy 15 year anniversary of the quake! ;) )since I had to go to the Borders next to it anyway... the place was fairly busy (normally there is no one inside that store, even at Christmas it was pretty empty) but I didn't see too many people buying. They were telling people, at least in the games section, that everything was priced as marked. There were no signs about any percentage off for anything, so maybe the liquidators hadn't fully gotten a hold of that store?

I'd be slightly disappointed if there really were discounts but I didn't see much I would've bought at 10%, or even 30%.

The cheapest 32" LCD I could find was $630 after the 10% off (no including tax). Most of the DVD/BDs were marked up to retail price and even with the 20% off, they're terrible deals. Cloverfield was like $35, Band of Brothers DVD set was $70... but the person in front of me picked up both and thought it was a great price.

BTW, I'm not making fun of CC or anything, I know this isn't under their control anymore. I'm making fun of the people who are buying up everything left and right thinking they're getting deals at those kinds of prices.

If this goes anything like the CompUSA liquidations, you won't be seeing 50-75% off for about a month. They'll drop about 10% each week, to bring out the curious bargain shoppers. And it will work. by the time they hit 50% off, all you will find are the movies/games/etc, that aren't even worth 50% off.
However, you may be able to find a diamond in the rough from time to time.

Tested to see if I could get PSN cards for 30% but was only able to get 10%, picked up a blu-ray remote to go with it. BDs 20% off, there prices were normal (decent at least) so anyone looking to fill up on BDs might be able to get some deals.

Went to CC in Firewheel, Garland, TX. Best deal I saw was a wireless Gibson Guitar for GH for $14.99, before 10% off. However, there was an unpleasant smell of feces (not kidding) in the gaming section.

Sure you were'nt in WI? lol Seriously, stores around here including Walmart, CC, Shopko all use this horrible smelling powdered cleaner to cover up chemical spills, kiddie barf, pee, spilled drinks, etc. Very commonly used in public gradeschools. That smell is forever etched in my mind. *barf*

I hated the Circuit City by me on Route 10 as they never had any items advertised in sales and I didn't mind when they were culled from the pack a few months ago.
All the Circuit City's going.....now thats a bad thing.
For one, competition is great and now there's no one for Best Buy to compete against for price lowering. Target and Sears just don't advertise a wide enough selection in electronics.
But also important to me is that the other CC on Route 22 in NJ had great carts and a great bumpy red path around the store. I had a ball pushing my son around in the carts and doing donuts by the big tv's.
Goodbye to the good CC. Lets hope I can remember you even more fondly with some nice cheap pickups.

Went to the CC in San Mateo CA

30% off Cables, mobile accessories, something else I forgot srry
20% CDs/DVDs
10% Everything else

I picked up the Club for 16$ b/c I thought it was a good game, but reviews dont seem to agree with that, oh well I'll try it and make my own judgement.

The bins had 360 games such as Call of Duty 3, Conan for 16.96
Saw a pc game called Guild Wars for $23, used to be 40 I think.
I'll wait a couple weeks, I want Fallout 3 =)

I'd been to that store several times before, and never smelled that odor before. I don't know what to think.

We don't even have a Best Buy here, CC was the only big name electronics store. We are really screwed now.

The Liquidators in this sale are hoping that people will clean all those $16.96 games right up, not realizing that they've been that price for months now.
The store in College Point (Queens) was a mad house (according to my brother). They barely had anything worth noting (as expected), but it appears they attracted vultures from all walks of life with the 'clearance' stickers.

Wait a sec. So you're calling those people vultures when they go in for 10% discounts but everyone here (and probably you) is just biding their time until the discounts inevitably increase before they ransack what's left? So what's that make you guys?

CC sucks. JK

Anyways, my store was entire 30% off, but all games were repriced back to MSRP. On top of that, there was a hugeeeee line, so I didn't really browse around.
Also, the clearance section that I normally browse that had games marked as 9.99 and under was changed to $20 and under.

Got Fracture today...priced at $20 and had a $10 gc. So I was happy with a $10 game. lol

10% for dvds, games, and recently released cds
20% for cds that have been out for awhile

lol fools buying tvs today when the news busted on CC today saying that BB regular price was cheaper than CC's sales price. lol

There are no bargins to be found folks. 10% off is pathetic. Another CC here in Dallas closed a month ago and games were down to 50% off after about a month of the sale. I snagged Fable 2 for $30. Wait until then folks.

Well, most CAGs that've been here for a while won't jump on a supposed 10% off msrp. Especially if it means fighting hordes of people.

It's unfortunate that so many people lost their jobs, but that doesn't mean I should go out give my money to a very wise liquidator.

You might want to check on the prices. We thought that was the case down here in Georgia when CC had their liquidation sales last month but I was able to score 2 360 games that were marked as 49.99 (Call of Juarez and Dead or Alive 4) at 50% off the actual price (16.96 as they were on clearance in CC's system) so they rang up at 8.48 each.

Hi everyone,

So I was able to score call of duty 4 : game of the year edition, mirror's edge, and dead space for $20.00 each. Your store may vary. They are listed for 59.99 w/ only about 10 percent off but this is what happened to me.

I stood in line to ask for the price of call of duty 4 because I had heard it was 20. He told me it was 59.99 but about 54 w/ the price reduction. I said, "Oh, nevermind I though tit was 20.00). Then he asked me, "Would you buy it for 20.00?" I say yes, then he says ok.. i'll give it for you for 20.00. Then I ask him, "Ok, I don't want to push it, but can i get dead space and mirror's edge for the same price?" (they were behind the counter). Hes responds, "Sure, what are they going to do? Fire me?". So he gave me all of them for $20 each.

Some tips

Be friendly to the guy at the register
Go at the line that leads you to the customer service registers
Don't talk to a manger, I saw a manager refuse a discount to a really nice old guy who wanted to buy the display record player (he wouldn't give him a discount on a open box record player that looked pretty worn).
Don't get pissed, just ask. You might be able to joke w/ them and say, "What are they going to do? Fire you?" (but not in a mean tone, and on second thought this might be a bit mean.. the guy that helped me out was a young college student so he probably didn't support a family w/ this income)

Don't be surprised if it doesn't work for you.. but, hey it's worth a try.

Had a decent haul today at the CC in Greenfield, WI. They had copies of Mario Kart Wii still, and it was behind the customer service counter along with WiiPlay. I grabbed both, and the lady accidentally marked them as 30% off. Considering I'd never seen Mario Kart on a shelf prior to this, it was a pretty nice deal for me.

Otherwise, most of their products are not worth it until they get more than 20% off. But by the time it gets to that, it'll be all crap anyway.

Hmm..my CC has a ton of 800 MS point cards on the shelf. You can easily take one, scratch it and get the number without even buying it. Of course, it's not worth anything if you don't activate it.

Are they still able to activate them even though they're in liquidation? I know it sounds stupid but I just want to make sure.

Thats what the bad thing is. They want to get rid of this stuff and they will only because people are to stupid to check prices else where. If BB or Amazon or any other place has it for less why buy it at CC yet people are still buying it there. The one I go to has maybe 10-15 cars and that is chances are the employees mixed in also in the parking lot at most. Today it was packed and almost no place to park. All because they said they are liquidating and going out of business. So for upto 30% off people went in to buy things that are around that price at Best Buy or even Amazon. Hell I went to pick up some BDs however they were still after the 30% off as much or more then Best Buy and a lot more then Amazon. I think today is the last day I will go into that place. That is unless it gets down to 90% off.

Half an hour wait to get in, no discount marked. The third staffer I asked told me 10% off everything NOT already on sale, and 30% off accessories (cables, etc.). All the recent Blu-Ray discs were cleared out, as were most of the newer video game titles. 10% off an Xbox Live Gold account might not have been a bad deal, though.

When you factor in the 8.25% sales tax I have to pay, the discount as it stands now wasn't worth the wait.

I feel terrible for all the employees put of out of work (as well as all the more veteran employees they laid off three years ago to cut costs), but even on clearance sale, they're still a bad deal.

Maybe in a few weeks when they drop the prices further.

Went by one earlier. They fucking marked up all of the clearanced games back to retail price (CoD4 was $19.96, the register rang it up as $59.99). Saw an Xbox 360 Network Adapter marked with a Clearance label...with a $99.99 price tag.

PC games and other things were marked at 10% off. No DVDs or Blu-rays. Everyone was scrambling around as if these were deals of the century when all they could get at the most was 10% off. But then when you factor in Florida taxes (7%), it's really 3% off.

What a pisser. By the time things start dropping in price, all the good stuff will be gone because people are stupidly buying things up, thinking they're getting a deal. :-x

Just checked out my CC in Sarasota, FL - almost everything was 10% off. The few exceptions were "social gaming" 20% off (GH/RB stuff), accessories were 30% and it looked like most if not all 360 games were 20% off. Seems pretty consistent with what everyone else was reporting. :P

I think it's pretty obvious if people are willing to buy at these basically-not-deals prices, CC's biggest issue was being perceived as not cheap enough.

What a waist! I actually liked Circuit City (although some of the people who worked there needed some SERIOUS help). At least they honored their own price on their own website. You go to other places and they will pricematch other stores but good luck getting them to price match THEMSELVES. That will be sorely missed.

Anyway, I went today and it was a joke. Everything was still too high yet for a clearance sale. I found a couple of of things that I may have wanted to pick up (that I had just checked the price on earlier this week) and they were not price marked anymore. Thinking that I wanted to see how much they were after whatever % discount came off, I asked them to do a price check on them.
They told me they were the same price they told me earlier in the week. I told them there was no tag on the shelf, I wanted to just check how much it was and they told ,me they were marked and they do not get a discount. We left. I MAY try back again in a few weeks but I am not holding my breath.

CC in Greenville, SC had 30% off all gaming accessories...the shelves were almost bare. No contorllers for 360 or PS3, Wii...the did have the X-plorer guitar for $10 - 30% = $7 and the wireless less paul for the 360 for $20 - 30% = $14...didn't bite on those since I have 4 wires X-plorer...all games were 10%. I heard the cashier tell someoen that they plan to stay open until March 31st but if the can close up and sell everything early they still get paid until March 31st...my local CC must be on the accelerated closing plan. The Xbox points and XBL subs were still full price, so no deal there. Wouldn't mind the wireless Les Paul guitar but I refuse to put more batteries in my gadgets if I can just use it wired while I'm playing that one game.

There was an article on the LA Times website and I would assume it will be in the Sunday paper as well talking about how over 100 people were in line at the Hollywood, CA location this morning. I don't get this at all. Were people just not sure what the percentage off would be? At 8.25% sales tax in LA and full MSRP pricing, there is literally no way anything was cheaper in store than it would have been on-line from just about any other retailer. Did you actually see anyone buying anything?

At 8.25% sales tax in LA and full MSRP pricing, there is literally no way anything was cheaper in store than it would have been on-line from just about any other retailer. Did you actually see anyone buying anything?
LA Times article:

Shoppers eager to grab their share of discounted plasmas and Blu-ray DVDs lined up in droves today as Circuit City stores began liquidating their inventory. The bankrupt electronics retailer is shutting down its 567 U.S. stores and laying off 34,000 workers.

By late morning, the line outside the Circuit City in Hollywood was almost 100 people deep. Carlos Reyes, 24, and girlfriend Diana Anzora, 22, of Los Angeles lined up to buy video games and DVDs.

"I prefer Best Buy and if it wasn't for the liquidation I probably wouldn't have come, especially this early on a Saturday," Reyes said. "We didn't know it was going to be such a big line."

Reyes said they would probably stick to smaller items since all sales are final.

"We don't want to get anything too big," he said. "You don't want to not be able to return an HD or plasma."

Andrew Lobel, 26, had different plans. The screenwriter from Los Feliz -- and first-time Circuit City shopper -- stood in line for 40 minutes for a chance to snag a 46-inch LCD TV on sale.

"I'm waiting to trample someone to death," he joked.

The scene outside the store looked very similar to that on Black Friday, he said. A steady stream of customers had been lining up outside since the store opened at 10 a.m., said store director Jesse Alcaraz. A handful of them read books to pass the time. Some called friends to pass on the word about the sales.

Inside, the atmosphere was busy but not hectic, as customers mostly flocked to TVs and browsed bins of marked-down PlayStation and Xbox games. Merchandise was marked for 10%, 20% and 30% off.
