View Full Version : Vista Killed My Ram

Well, not really.
I'm not really sure what exactly happened, but I purchased Vista Ultimate from a person on here. Got it this week, and went to install it. I installed the 64 bit version. Everything was going fine, until the screen went black, but the monitor acted like it was still connected.
I started disconnecting and take out un-necessary cards, and hard drives/CD Rom Drives.
I finally got it to install properly. I then went back, and hooked things back up, and went to power on the machine. Everything started to come up, then blue screen. Turns out the whole time that one of my sticks of ram was the problem. I had two 512mb sticks, and 1 1gb stick. One of the 512's died, so I had to take out the other. Since they recommend not running with half gigs like that I guess.
Anyway, I recently ordered 3 more GB, so I'll soon be running 4 gb. Has anyone ever had anything like that happen to them? All I did was go to change the OS, and it killed a stick of ram. I knew Vista had "problems" but this is a bit extreme, just kidding
*Disclaimer* I know Vista didn't kill my ram, my ram did actually die though, by me just installing Vista, I just found it odd, that by just installing an OS, my ram dies, so I "blamed" Vista for it as a joke" But I wanted to see if anyone has had similar happenings

Your RAM died on its own.

Okay? The ram really did die, when I changed OS, didn't do anything else. I just found it weird.

Why do you guys find the need to be smart asses about this? I made a side joke, but am asking a serious question. Why do you feel the need to post random things like this?

CAG stole my money, or at least once I became a member I started spending my money on great video game deals and PC components. So essentially CAG is responsbile.
Just kidding, no I haven't had any similar experiences with Vista.

RAM is weird, as you know, reinstalling the OS probably had zero to do with anything but the timing.
Unless it access a .. er.. Oh I dunno.. a thing in the whatzit.
That said, I had some crucial RAM go bad on me, and I called them up for help and was suprised to learn that a lot of RAM manufactureres give lifeetime warranties on the stuff.
So call them up and ask them, it couldnt hurt!
I actually had two sticks go bad over the years, both were well over a year old when they went out, and both were replaced with zero hassle.

I ended up just buying 3 more GB of ram, so I have 4 now. That was a hassle tho to get things to get it recognized. I ended up getting it down though, and I must say that it's really fast.
I just need to replace my sound card now, which I guess doesn't like Vista. Since it sounds like crap now

Definitely uninstall the drivers and re-install the newest Vista drivers first before you do that. It could be a very simple fix.

I did that, but the weird thing is that Vista tells me it has a conflict with my "Sound Card" in the problems thing in the control panel. The weird part is that it claims it's made by Nvidia, which it isn't. It's a creative card. Could that be contributing to my problem?
I really miss the EAX console that I had, where I could tell it to use things like Stereo Surround Sound.

Sounds like on-board sound trying to get installed. I'd just turn that off in BIOS next time you reboot.

I restarted, and turned it off, yet it still keeps coming up trying to tell me there's a problem.
Your RAM committed suicide when it realized how demanding and abusive Vista was.

what ram and mobo do you have?
do you have a lot in the case, and is there proper cooling?

Vista knew your 1 GB of RAM isn't enough to handle it. So it killed your RAM and beg for more!

I have the Asus A8N32SLI-Deluxe Model, I'm not even sure what kind the ram was to be honest. It has a metal casing over it, but never gives a name brand.
I ended up getting PNY DDR PC3200 1GB sticks, I got three of those, so now I have a total of 4 GB.
As far as the sound card goes, just an FYI to people.. Don't get the Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. Turns out it's the same card as the old Audigy just with Vista drivers. So you pay for the drivers. I'm taking mine back to Staples. I ordered the Creative X-Fi Titanium off Amazon.
The one thing I've noticed tho, is that my processor seems to "over-work" itself on Vista 64 bit even tho it's a 64 bit processor. Sometimes, the processor gadget thing (I turned it out to see how everything is working) shows it's using 100% of the processor. Is there anything that can be done about that, or perhaps the processor is just too old? Iunno.

Vista basically neutured all hardware-based sound card solutions. There's a more detailed explanation behind it, but I think others could explain it better than I can.
Pretty much the only reason to get a new X-Fi (assuming you don't already have a PCI card), is for the future proofing of the PCI-e format. OTOH...I'm not really sure of the future of hardware-sound acceleration.

So what sound card would you have recommended? The one I bought sounded alright, but was considerably flat. It has no control for treble or bass, and you could tell it lacked. So that's why I picked up the more expensive X-Fi Titanium thinking it would be a more rounded sound card.
