View Full Version : Inverted or Normal Poll

The purpose of this thread is to find out what ratio of people play shooters (3rd and 1st person) with inverted controls.

It seems to me, if I remember correctly that games used to be by default inverted, and I made a conscious effort to play that way. Now every game is by default not inverted, and I was wondering who plays how.

Also just out of curiosity, does anyone use southpaw controls?

Inverted: 11
Normal: 12
both: 5 (different for 3rd/first, or no preference)

Also it seems to be a common thing that everyone likes inverted for flight games (which makes sense, since you control the flaps on the wings).

While I used to play inverted, I converted many years ago to normal.

I do both, I started out as inverted but some games didn't give me that option so I was forced to learn normal. I go both ways.

If by inverted you mean down is up and up is down, then inverted all the way.

yea that annoys me when they dont offer inverted, but both, that just seems like it would trip me up.

How about a game where you control multiple vehicles and you have set to inverted and some to not.

- Warhawk -

It gets very disorienting for me.

Yes it does, but for some reason when I am in vehicles, I have more tolerance for normal/inverted, oddly enough it just doesnt matter as much to me.

Normal for character control, inverted for planes/starfighters.

Normal.

Up is up and down is down, dammit. The only thing that should play like a flight sim is a flight sim.

Inverted, though some games refer to it as "Normal" in a confusing turn.

Inverted, unless me and my friends are switching out every other game. Then, I play normal, since all of them think inverted is weird.

Inverted. I used to play a lot of Wing Commander and Chuck Yeager, and I've never gone back. It just makes more sense from a 3-Dimensional standpoint; when I point the stick down, the camera's pitch should change as if at the end of a stick.

Up being up should only make sense if your were panning a camera.

However, with keyboard and mouse, since the camera isn't on a stick I actually use normal controls on first person shooters. On any third person titles (including RTS titles), I still use inverted.

Pretty sure I almost always play at whatever the default is (non-inverted?).

Flight/airplanes are always inverted.

Inverted for everything. I can't play games that don't offer the option.

Inverted, as it feels more natural. I can't get used to Normal.

I play non-inverted for FPS and ThirdPS and inverted for flight sims.

It depends.

In a third person game you are controlling what I believe is a "camera" following the person, so if you move the camera up, your angle will aim down. If you move the "camera" left, your angle will look toward the right.

In a first-person game, right should look right and left should look left.

So: third-person = inverted

first-person = regular

I can go both ways. I used to prefer normal for games where you control the player and inverted for planes, but I really don't care anymore.

It would be easier to add a poll OP.

Inverted = lame. When I move up, I want to look up, and same for down. Normal for me.

I'm glad so many people use inverted. I do as well for first and 3rd person games.

For whatever reason, I just can't get use to "normal". I understand the logic (up is up, etc), it just doesn't work. I remember getting Halo 2, and not finding the inverted controls until I played for 2 hours, and I just couldn't get into it until I flipped the controls to inverted.

The mouse/stick is my head. I move my head forward to look down. I move my head backward to look up.

Blame this game:

Same here. I used inverterd years ago probably from getting used to inverted aiming in Star Fox before I got into FPS games, but I've sense switched to normal aiming.

Inverted for me.

For some reason, I visualize the stick as the 'head' of the character when it's a person. So pushing "back" on the stick is like someone was tilting my head back with a finger. That would force me to look up. Vice versa for looking down; imaginary finger pushing the top of my head "forward", forcing me to tilt my head down.

I agree, that is how I think of it too, and although I didnt think of it, on the computer I dont do inverted either.

Always inverted with sticks (in any situation, first or third person, anytime you're controlling the camera). I don't think I play inverted with a mouse (it's been a while). With a mouse I think I'm used to thinking of the crosshair as a cursor, so it makes sense to move it in the direction that you want the crosshair to be. I don't have that illusion with joysticks on a controller.

I'm the exact opposite. Inverted when I'm playing on the PC with a keyboard/mouse. Normal with I'm playing on the consoles with the analog sticks. Heh.
