I was hoping Ian was disposable. The idiot got himself killed in a random encounter with mutant rats. We started shooting them, but they were all going after him. He got hurt and started running away, and since he and the rats are faster than me, he died somewhere offscreen. Never did find the body.Oh, god damn. No. Ian is the second-best NPC you get, second only to Tycho. You have to keep them supplied in ammo and stims, though. Either barter with or use your steal skill (they don't mind) on one of your guys to move items around.

Anyway I bartered with Garl. Gave him $400 worth of stuff for the girl.An intelligent and charismatic character probably could have gotten him to release her for free, but whatever.

All I found was tails in the scorpion cave, where should I be finding guns and armor?I think I mispoke earlier. There's a fair bit of ammo in the radscorpion caves, but no guns or armour. You can get a shotgun, some stims, another pistol, lots of EXP, flares, ammo, and maybe some other shit back in your home vault. You get the SMG and leather jacket in the vault out east. You'll get your next two NPCs in Junktown, though again, don't get Dogmeat if you don't want to fight much 'cause he he makes the stealth route through the last leg of the game impossible. And never give one of your NPCs an SMG. Even if they tell you they're good with it. Because they aren't.

Also, scorpion tales weigh 20lbs each. If time is no issue, you're much better off having them turned into (mostly useless) antidote. But money doesn't matter at-fucking-all after you go through the Glow.

I still have the starting pistol and no armor. I haven't been using stimpacks because if I had been using them, I'd be out of them by now. Also my big gun stat is very low.Big guns aren't worth it. You can get by on small arms for a long time before switching over to energy weapons. And hell, you don't really even need the energy weapons if you go the stealth route later on, though you gotta get through Necropolis pretty damn quickly for that to work.

EDIT: In other words, if you see someone selling stims (especially the second-tier stims), ya might as well just buy the god damn things 'cause you're gonna be so weighed down with ammunition, spare weapons, and assorted bullshit by the end that even your NPCs won't be able to hold a pound more.

EDIT2: I said that big guns are pretty much useless, but I think that the laser gatling thing can be alright. No way in hell you're getting it without a fight, though.

How is Tomb Raider Underworld? I played the demo and I was shocked how fluid the animations and controls were but it seemed like figuring out where you have to go is a real pain in the ass. Just in that demo I had a hard time finding the rock wall to climb up out of the ocean from and then where to go when you reach the temple and the tigers attack. But maybe I'm just :dunce:.

When I try to help the sheriff of the Hub kill the guy that owns the casino, I die in 1 turn, and usually one of the police die with me.

Stims seem to be useless for me. My HP is around 39, and in either of the fights above, the enemy does more than 1 stimpack worth of damage to me in a turn. Which means I shoot my first turn, and am nearly dead by the 2nd. If I heal, I usually die anyway, if I don't, I die on the 3rd, and still have only shot the enemy once. So really, I can't do much more fighting in this game. The fact that there doesn't seem to be an "intelligent" route through these quests pisses me off, and I feel like that kind of throws the non-linearity this game is supposed to have out the window.

Now, I heard about the Necropolis in the Hub, and I accidentally saw in a FAQ that that's where the water chip is, so that's where I am right now. Ghouls seem to be easy enough to kill, I'll see how far I can get.


Also, what is up with First Aid? When it works, I get only 4 HP back, but most of the time it fails. After 2 or 3 tries, it tells me I'm "too tired." The hell kind of answer is that?

The demo is actually the second area. In the game all that stuff is explained to you when you go through the beginning parts.

They kill Frog before I have a turn with the chance to heal.
Then it's downhill from there, as they gang up on someone so healing doesn't matter and there's no real chance to attack. :\

Currently level grinding with Crono/Lucca/Frog, as I've read Luminaire/Hypnowave/Heal works well. Crono doesn't have Luminaire yet. :(

I like it a lot...the camera is a bit wonky and it doesn't show much evolution from TR Legend and TR Anniversary, but it's a lot of fun and the environmental puzzles are very well done. The story's actually really compelling, as well...though some reviews have suggested that it all ends a bit abruptly.

If you enjoyed the other two "reboot" games, you'll like the new one.

I still feel bad everytime I shoot a lion, though. ;)

If it goes for you then shoot out its legs and keep mobile.

Take a shot - even an aimed shot - then open up your inventory and stim yourself. Remember that you can use multiple stims at once.

The radscorpion caves, for example, can be solved by collapsing the cave with dynamite. Rescuing Tandi from the Khans can be solved by talking, bribery, a boxing match, or just killing motherfucking everyone. You can get through the last couple of hours or so disguised as an enemy. In the Glow you can fight all the bots or just destroy them while they're deactivated. Sometimes violence is rewarded more (killing the radscorpions > collapsing the cave) and sometimes intelligence (destroying the disabled bots > fighting the bastards).

But yeah, there's no reasoning with or sneaking by a deathclaw when your job is to kill it. But if you made a character with no agility and no small arms skills, then you just shouldn't be taking those quests.

Ghouls are pussies - try and find some RadAway and RadX though - but the mutants mean business.

Really, with your stats all out of joint and Ian dead, I'd recommend restarting. Sounds like you missed Vault 15 and two other NPCs anyway. Try go through it again with the Gifted attribute, 10 agility, and a heavy emphasis on intelligence. Tag small arms, energy weapons, and something else (I went with speech but it doesn't really matter - lock picking is probably the best). Keep your NPCs alive (give or take Dogmeat depending on how ya wanna do the last bit) and don't let them run out of ammo or stims. Then do all the quests. Kill the radscorpion, kill the Khans, kill the deathclaw. Go to Vault 15. For the love of God, go to Vault 15. Check out your own vault 'cause there are plenty of quests and items to get in there. Don't raise up your science or repair skills too much 'cause there are books that you can buy that will do that for you up to 91% or something.

But that's just me. The game is largely about choice and I ain't trying to make it for you. Just recommending shit.

Now I'm-a go play Fallout 2. Not liking it as much so far, but whatever.

It just balances everything out to make it feel like the stuff doesn't level with you. You can use the one you're looking at though if you want things at a static level.

Those can probably be solved. Have you updated your nvidia drivers to the most recent ones? The newest set gave me a seriously ridiculous performance boost in Fallout. Like from a stuttery 30fps outdoors to a solid 60fps. No joke. Also, disabling water effects and reflections gave me a huge jump as well. It also makes the water look more dirty and realistic (I don't know why there would be crystal clear and perfectly reflective water in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.)

The new drivers give a serious boost to a lot of games, namely 10% boost in Crysis, 25% boost in DMC4, and a ridiculous 80% boost in Lost Planet Colonies.

There's "do anything you want" and then there's "not punishing you for picking nothing even remotely combat related". I mean yeah, negotiations are possible for lots of shit, but you know that there will be animals that you just can't talk with. If the closest thing you have to a combat-ready stat is 6 strength (dunno what your perception is), you're asking to get your ass kicked in even the most open of games.

Having said that, they didn't exactly make things balanced. I mean, if you are gonna crazy min/max then you should be punished (like my exploding 10mm), but they shouldn't have made agility as important as it ended up being.

Also, I don't think there's a verbal solution to releasing Tandi, anything I said to whatshisname just ended in him shooting me in the face.I got it.

Then I went back and killed 'em all for extra EXP.

i just installed a custom version those nvidia drivers and i got an even bigger performance boost
with the regular drivers i did a performance test in the forest area in dmc 4 and i normally hit 25-27 fps when the camera panned to the circle area where nero is fighting

with the custom drivers in the same area i constantly kept above 30 fps and only twice i went to 27-29 fps

I did notice that my eVGA 8800GT KO's fan actually works now and cranks up like it should. It's a noisy motherfucker though.

i just installed a custom version those nvidia drivers and i got an even bigger performance boost
with the regular drivers i did a performance test in the forest area in dmc 4 and i normally hit 25-27 fps when the camera panned to the circle area where nero is fighting

with the custom drivers in the same area i constantly kept above 30 fps and only twice i went to 27-29 fps


yikes, how can you play DMC4 below a solid 60fps? Lower your settings, the game will still look better than the console version if you set stuff to low/medium.

i tried setting it at low for shadows/screen/textures and i got like 60-70 fps based on the first few seconds on the first test

if i set at high like i had before with vsync(had bad screen tearing) the first test usually has my fps at 40-50+

edit:had screen tearing with the manufacturer drivers i dont seem to have it with these new drivers

There's "do anything you want" and then there's "not punishing you for picking nothing even remotely combat related". I mean yeah, negotiations are possible for lots of shit, but you know that there will be animals that you just can't talk with. If the closest thing you have to a combat-ready stat is 6 strength (dunno what your perception is), you're asking to get your ass kicked in even the most open of games.

Kinda. The DLC from the original NG1 added a move called "intercept" that parries attacks, which they removed from Black (making Black harder, imo.) Hurricane Pack 1 is like Hard mode in Black, except you don't have to beat it on normal first. Hurricane Pack 2 is the final set of missions, which you can play without beating all the others first.

so the difference is you get early access to some stuff and it's easier with the intercept move. but yeah, Black is the way to go.

I haven't played the original NG in years, so I'm not sure if the DLC is still up. It should be. The original NG has the NES games and Black has the arcade game. You have to jump through hoops to unlock them.

Recruit Dogmeat if you want to by either giving him iguana-on-a-stick or talking to him with a leather jacket on. Also, if your character's a particularly good talker, sleep at the hotel.

Step 2: The LA Boneyards. Buy/find/steal a couple of RadX,a RadAway and a rope. Talk to Katja (knife/handgun specialist) at the church of the Followers of the Apocalypse. Give her a good, non-automatic hand gun. If you've killed that Deathclaw back in the Junkyards then you'll have the handgun-rifle thing. If not, give her a magnum and take away her knives. You'll get a good handgun in...

I didn't realize you had to deal with mutants after delivering the water chip. I can't even get near the Military Base without getting shot to pieces by super mutants.

Gizmo's already dead. I wandered over to the Brotherhood, who sent me to the Glow. I walked all the way there to find I didn't bring a rope :bomb:

Thats why I was doing the running man and talking to them. It was just me and my friend Josh for a while, but then like 30 people came, set up bubble machines, and some dude had "Rollercoaster of Love" playing really loud on his headset. :lol:

You can get some from the Overseer and the lockers in Vault 13. You can buy some from many different merchants in various places - Junktown, LA, and the Hub all come to mind. It might not look like they have much but it respawns.

And you should be at least up to a magnum or a rifle by now, anyway. I'm surprised you don't use a shotgun or something.

I never said Fallout 3 sucked. I said there were better things out there, like Gears 2 (and I stand by that. Gears 2 >>>>>>>>> Fallout 3) and that I didn't understand the unbelievable amount of hype it was getting for something that seemed to be Oblivion all over again. And it is... Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns. And the environments are every bit as colorless/monotone/drab as I expected, due to the locale (and if you get off on these environments more than Oblivion, great, but they don't do it for me).

As a rule, I don't really care for all the micro-managing that some RPG's require...and it seemed like Oblivion required a lot of that. I played Mass Effect on autopilot (or whatever they called it) and let the game handle all of my upgrades and whatnot, and that helped a lot.

Also, I found the travel in dialog in Oblivion really tedious. I'm hoping that Fallout is more streamlined and less bogged down in minutia.

VATS is a very nice addition... but I found ammo to be absurdly scarce for me at lower levels -- I'm still not comfortable with my ammo stash and only bust out bigger guns for bigger enemies, sticking mainly with a laser pistol and hunting riflle (or 10mm pistol). That was a hell of a lot more frustrating to deal with than having to just wait for my magic to recharge or use a repair hammer. :\

Hell, the ammo scarcity for me was/is bad enough that I thought about using my level 8 perk for the "find a lot more ammo" deal (I took commando instead...); I keep finding railspikes and darts with no gun to fire them though... :bomb:

I'd say it's about the same. Travel still works the same, with fast travel to locations you've discovered. Talking seems the same to me too, where you have a chunk of different options of things to say to people and such.

Definitely a lot of ammo management. Equipment repair, scavenging, inventory management, etc.

Leveling is much more streamlined though, not requiring you to sleep to actually level up... it actually feels like you get something out of leveling too, by being able to choose a perk everytime. That part is improved -- I remember when Unkle Naskar sold me Oblivion, the first time I leveled up... I think I jumped about 4 levels when I actually finally slept in a bed... :bomb:

That sounds promising to me. I'm playing through Oblivion off and on now, and it sounds like what Fallout 3 does differently hits some of the things bugging me in Oblivion.

I'll have to pick it up sometime in the future when I'm done with Oblivion and have time for another RPG. Though I'll probably try to play Fable 2 first unless I get a deal on Fallout 3 first (or get matched for it first on Goozex) just to play something more different.

Yeah, I heard it was pretty short which is why I'll have to get it very cheap or from Goozex and trade it right back.

But I prefer shorter games these days since I don't have a lot of time for gaming. I just won't pay $50-60 for them.

10 hours is about ideal for me, as I can knock it out over a couple weeks or in one weekend where I actually have no work to do etc.

You only need one rope for the Glow and should be able to find it in LA somewhere. As for 10mm ammo? You can get some from the Overseer and the lockers in Vault 13. You can buy some from many different merchants in various places - Junktown, LA, and the Hub all come to mind. It might not look like they have much but it respawns.

And you should be at least up to a magnum or a rifle by now, anyway. I'm surprised you don't use a shotgun or something.

There were times when I got kinda low, sure, but never ran out. They stop giving you much 10mm ammo towards the end, yes, but you should be using better stuff than that by that point anyway. Say, combat shotgun for Tycho, 14mm for Katja, rifle-handgun for Ian, and a sniper rifle or energy gun for yourself.

Fallout 2 is a bit of a disappointment. I like that weaponry seems better balanced and the AI can be customized better, but the story seems way weaker and my NPCs are even more retarded than before. I appreciate not getting blocked into narrow passages by them anymore, but it can be a pain in the fucking ass to have to chase down a wounded enemy with my brass knuckles while a guy with a gun just sits on his ass complaining about my other NPC.

EDIT: And you do realize that you can buy ammunition in the Hub and LA, right? There's fuck-tons of it.

Also just found that last night. I was overjoyed to find I could afford a combat shotgun, and crushed when I find that I don't have the strength to use it properly. Hopefully Tycho can put it to good use. It seems Katja can't use the deagle, I gave it to her and she just punched instead.

Since my strength is 4, is the Vibro-blade my best final weapon choice? From what I can see from CSmith's FAQ (http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/197289.html), there's nothing better that I'd be able to handle until I get that operation from wherever the doctor is. Just picked up a rope from Shady Sands, so I think I'll be hitting the Glow tonight.

For some reason I had in my head that I didn't need or want party members, which was the cause of many deaths. Not really sure how I ever came up with that. Killed 3 deathclaws! But boy does Katja die quick.

Oh, hehe, took a couple days off. I had some vacation to spare and it's a coincidence that it coincided with the RE5 demo.
