I don't really consider myself a "j-dork", but what's so bad about the voice acting?
What game do you think has good voice acting?
Bad voice actors are still fun, I mean Resident Evil has the worst VAs and I love every minute of it.

Man, Oblivion is straight crack. Just plowed through a 7 hour marathon. Finished the Dark Brotherhood quests, then finished the main quests. Also did one shrine quest I'd found on gamefaqs a while back when I got to level 10 so I could get the unbreakable lock pick (had found it searching for where to buy lockpicks). Just under 31 hours play time so far.
I'll probably try to see if I can get into the other guild quests. I've already started 1 or 2 missions of the Fighter's guild, so I guess I'll do that one next. And then I'll go from there on whether to get the Knights of the Nine and/or Shivering Isles Expansions.

teddie, mainly. He comments after every attack and repeats the same line when you attack weak points (annoying when there are 3 enemies.) he sounds like a man baby, cheapens the atmosphere. It's not a case of "so bad its good" like HotD or RE.
good va in games is a tough call-- so much of it depends on how its arranged, applied, and written. most games fail in one or more of those departments.
However, I really really want to see the Uncharted 2 trailer.

Yeah actually the werehog and God of War are surprisingly similar. They're both pretty awful in gameplay, but the werehog follows suit with it's setting and character, and music. God of War has an appealing character and setting and graphics.
Thus why God of War gets by and Werehog gets panned. Style glosses over the lack of quality in the substance.

I liked DMC4 a lot, better than 3, but I'm not sure 3 aged well ... or I didn't really like the styles or difficulties or the way it looked on my new TV. Ninja Gaiden is cash monies... I think the fact that NG and GoW don't force you to earn every ability in the game with a store style system is a plus too -- you can still customize your combat and play to your strenthghs without having to buy every single ability. I think I liked the 1st half of DMC4... once you switch to dante, it felt like a cheap copout... plus I don't like how they changed dante in this one... whatever they did to his character doesn't resonate with me and I ended up liking nero and his devil arm better than dante.

I wasn't scared by RE4, but the only scary moment in a RE game was the very first time I played RE1 and the dogs jumped through the windows. I like the games for the gameplay...the story and scare-factor are both sub B-movie level.

Not as bad as what happened to me with Lunar.
For those that don't remember, before the game came out Working Designs released a demo for the game. The "neat" thing about the demo was you could save the game and continue on when the full game came out. In the game the main character starts off with a whistle in his inventory. Since each character's inventory is limited, I gave the whistle to another character to hold. So I saved at the end of the demo, and all was well. I eventually get the full game, beat the final boss, and at this point I'm required to play the whistle to end the game. Unfortunately in the full version you're not allowed to give the whistle to anyone else, so I could not get the whistle back to the main character. I had to start the entire game over. I cried...

RE, and DMC I like the games, but what keeps me from finishing them is that I don't like the tedious search for items, take this statue, place on alter 4 rooms away, to get through corridor C. But I feel that this new RE(5) is going to be more action oriented and I feel like I might enjoy it more. I did enjoy RE4 didn't finish it, but I did enjoy it because it was more action oriented. Do you have Gamefly? If so, you can just rent the disc, and install to your HDD. It doesn't require the disc.

Loved RE4. Hated the demo for RE5; it felt sluggish and clunky... I don't remember 4 being like that. The full game is going to change my mind, MM? :-s

Morning GGT,
Prepped for my flight back to the UK on Wednesday night, 21 PSP games, 4 PSP batteries, 12 eps of MST3k on one Pro-Duo, 2 seasons of Harry Hills TV Burp on another and I downloaded 2 more games off the PSN Store. So hopefully I'm all set.
Played some more Sonic Unleashed, they've kind of ruined that game with all the quick-time stuff. I got to a bit where Tails was flying me to another continent, I thought it would be a nice shmup section and it was all bloody quick-time. Glad I only paid $21 for it.

Hiya frosty! Thanks so much. Hope you're well. =)
I've heard. To be honest, I'd like a single player expansion more than maps.Or some freaking enemies?? Some awesome environments that *would* have brilliant for some firefights and you just sorta... walk through them doing nothing at all. WAAAAY disappointed with campaign.
I just hope the VGAs don't waste my time. it better not pull a Molyneux.WAAAAY disappointed with Molyneux as well. Although I shouldn't be, I should have expected this freakin mediocrity.
While I loved RE4 it also made me sad. It made me sad because we'll probably never get another old school RE game again. Its capcom, crowned prince of remakes. I'm hoping they remake Gaiden into a real game one day. Hoping. Wont happen, but I'm eternally optimistic. If they ever do Dead Aim, they better leave the VAs, their lousy localization and mis-matched subtitles as is. That alone was worth the price of the game.

I cried...Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. :(

Again to each their own. PC gaming has never been, and never will be, my cup of tea. I just hate computers in general.

Girlfriends are expendable apparently. :p
Seriously, I kind of figured they'd give Drake a new female companion for the sequel. I'm not sure if I disagree since it kind of follows that whole generic "male-protagonist-in-a-serial-adventure" theme.
Then again, if they make Uncharted 3 or 4, they might take the cliche full circle and make Drake marry Elena in the finale. :p

Just reasons why I prefer to play games on consoles over PCs regardless of the benefits of the PC versions along with the reason why I'd never have a PC in my living room hooked up to my home theater.
The PC version will never play differently enough, or have enough additional content, to outweigh the reasons I hate gaming on a PC to lead me to get a gaming PC and start playing PC versions of games.
And I still don't get the changing goal posts crap.
I don't know why...I was just making a recommendation about which version to buy. wasn't holding a gun to anyone's head
Oh, I didn't think you were. I was just adding my two cents on why I always prefer the console versions despite any gameplay shortcomings. :D It's just a different strokes for different folks things. The benefits don't matter if you just hate gaming on a PC period.

NXE talk:
I wonder why there's an eject option when there's no game in the drive, but not when there is one.
Also, I think the NXE added easier support for wireless ethernet adapters.
I gave one I wasn't using to my cousin for his 360 and the system knew what it was and I set it up with the 360 instead of my PC. It knew it was a wireless.
I REALLY liked that. Made it that much easier.
When I had tried to use that adapter on the 360 pre-NXE it would never work and would act as it it were a regular wired connection.

Yeah, it's not a big deal.
I do use the eject button all the time on my Blu Ray player (and the DVD player before). I always hit the "watch DVD" function on my harmony remote then hit eject so it's open and waiting when I walk over to put the disc in. And hit eject on the remote before getting up to take it out. But in the grand scheme it probably saves a total of five seconds so no big deal.
With the 360 I wasn't even aware their was an eject button, so that's never bothered me.

I just flipped through the options in the LCD screen on the remote and it's not there, I'll have to hook it up to the software on the PC sometime and see if there's an eject option I can add in there as not all the options show up in the LCD screen pages by default.

Hmm, there's gotta be. Though I would think on the 360 version of the Harmony, it'd be a button on the unit itself.
Nope, that remote has no hard eject button. It has four buttons by the lcd screen (and you can set up pages of commands for those to scroll through) so I just have one of those on the 1st screen set to eject for my Blu Ray player (see buttons on left and right of LCD in picture below). I will have to check and see if there's an option for the 360--I'm sure their probably is.
Another notable omission is there are no hard page up, page down buttons, so I have two of the lcd buttons on the first page of the screen set to those for my HD cable box.
But that stuff never bothered me since the LCD buttons are great, and every single button on the remote is customizable for every device/activity so it's easy enough to add in whatever there's not a dedicated button for.

I still don't like this gen of gaming to be honest. The only thing I like this gen has to offer is digital downloads, and that's it. retail games can suck my dong for all I care.

I disagree. I've really enjoyed this gen.

Same here. I've had the most fun with the 360 than I have with any console since the 360.
Games like Bioshock, Gears of War 1&2, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Orange Box, Call of Duty 4 etc. etc. are among the best I've played in my 25 or so years of gaming. Add in X-box Live, HD graphics, Netflix streaming etc. etc. and the 360 has just been a great time for me.
I'm still more casual about gaming than most here, but it's a big step up from the latter part of last gen when I was about ready to just quit gaming and not buy any next gen consoles.
But at the same time, I've gotten huge into FPS and western RPGs, so I could see how this generation could be a bit underwhelming for fans of Japanese style games etc.

I don't like this gen because I feel developers/publishers are REALLY nickel and diming people through downloadable content, especially on XBL with stupid themes (Most of which are now obsolete) and gamerpics (sorta obsolete).
As far as game DLC, map packs are the norm more often than not, which is bullshit, and exlcusive DLC for one system for multiplatform games gives me the feeling of them saying 'if you don't buy 'Version A' you're stupid'.

Doesn't really bother me as stuff like themes and gamepics are pointless anyway, and you have to be a fool to pay for that kind of crap.
As for game DLC, I don't mind it. A lot of the map packs are overpriced, but otherwise I like being able to extend a game with new songs, full expansions (Oblivion), etc. A lot of it is useless and over price, but there's plenty of good DLC.
Exclusive DLC is no more annoying that exclusive third party games were in the past. We just need a one console future--competition over game sales would be enough to keep the good games rolling. Well it could be one HD/advanced tech game console and one whatever the hell Nintendo is doing I suppose.

I'm not, just because I get most of my games off Goozex, and ditch most on there after beating them.
Convenience would be nice, but the lack of resell, trading etc. would suck. I'd probably still game, but I'd be even more focused on only playing the absolute cream of the crop than I already am.

Agreed. And it really needs to be two very different consoles--like the Wii and the 360/PS3 this gen (if the latter was one console). It's just silly having 2 or more consoles offering the same type of gaming. They lose money on hardware--Sony and MS should team up on hardware to split costs and focus on making money on game sales. It will never happen though. They'll stay seperate or one will fail and leave the game industry.

I hate buying a game and having companies hit me up for some DLC.
Imagine if DLC, themes, and gamerpics were free if you bought the game, as a way of saying "Thanks for giving us $60!"
Gaming is getting to be too much about money. Yeah I know it's a business. That's the problem. The love is gone.
Dr Mario Kart
12-15-2008, 11:02 PM
Maybe if the business model was actually viable they wouldnt have to do that to you. Though to be fair, if they couldve done this to you 10 or 20 years ago, you better bet your ass they would. The infrastructure and the technology wasnt up to par yet.
dmaul1114
12-15-2008, 11:07 PM
I guess the main reason is most of the DLC is useless. There's not too much of the "horse armor" crap these days. And that kind of crap is easy enough ot just pass on.
And I like DLC that is worthwhile--full expansions, new songs etc. etc. It keeps me playing a game longer for much less than the cost of a new game--so I like that aspect of DLC.
Just ignore the nickel and diming, buy the worthwhile DLC and enjoy it. Solves the problem of feeling annoyed and sends the message that only the worthwhile stuff is worth your money.

Definitely. MS was salivating at the mere thought of microtransactions.

Good evening, GGT. Drinking wine and reading NeoGAF :whee: I had an epiphany earlier today where I realized that console gaming (specifically 360 gaming) has all but turned into what PC gaming used to be, with lots of FPSes (which I used to like back when all the good/big-name ones needed a keyboard) and WRPGs (which I just can't get into). No wonder I like the Wii so much. Well, ever since the Dragon Quest X announcement slipped out, I like it even more...

Good to hear; I've used a real analog synthesizer before, and they are very hard to use effectively if you don't have a manual, so I was kind of hoping for some of that same experience from Korg DS-10. That it's fully-featured also sounds good. Do you remember what the sound quality was like?

actually, it didn't show any signs of dying, except for this bullshit red tint. The weirdest part is that there's like... a tiny circle on the screen that's fine, and that circle is centered around a stuck pixel that's been on the thing for a few months. Is it even possible to see the difference between 1080p and 720p on a 37" set, even if you're sitting up close? I notice the difference on a set that size. Maybe not so much with movies, but with games, yes. But I play PC, and I love high resolution.
I think most people can't tell the difference because they don't care or know enough and/or they sit far enough away where they can't see the difference.

Viewing distance is the key. Unless you are right up close (as most PC users are), you generally don't need 1080p on a TV less than 42".
I have a 24" HD monitor at my desk for work and I think it's about as large I can stand given how close I sit to it. I can't imagine spending any significant amount of time in front of 37" monitor, even for gaming.
I know Chac does a lot of PC gaming, though, so maybe 37" is right for him, but last I checked, the price difference between [good] 37 and 40" sets were in that "on-the-fence" range.
