also, I don't know what the GGT is smoking, Mario Kart Wii is awesome. Worth it for the online alone. Of course, I paid about $22 out of pocket for it after Amazon GC + selling the wheel.

Dunno what you're smoking. It's a big step back from DD and the DS version.

I actually LOVE Mario Kart Wii. It was my favorite Wii game all year and it was the main reason I played my Wii thoughout the year. The Wii Wheel sucks, no doubt, but the game plays awesome with the nunchuk + remote. I do feel DD was atrocious though, and I badly wanted it too. Mario DS is great, but I give a slight edge to Mario Kart on Wii (just too much fun and online works great).
Now I'm debating what gaming sig/avatar will go up this week. I'll probably do Mana Khemia PSP or consider The Last Remnant.
As far as games are considered, R2 dominates my PS3 while Lost Odyssey dominates my 360.

How? I'm not a hardcore MK fan, so all I see are better tracks, better graphics, and better online play. DS version is all snaking with more straightforward tracks.

I'm gonna agree with you -- when I played MKWii with Chika, I thought it was better than MK:DS -- and I wouldn't even go near DD after all the bad press and word of mouth it got.
Your sig reminds me of

Disgaea has remained sort of an awesome game for 37 hours, but I'm not excited about what seems like a couple hours of grinding ahead of me. I'm in the middle of Chapter 13, and I think I need to bump everyone up a few levels (they're at 50 now) to have a chance of surviving the fight against Kurtis. Doesn't seem like there's any really good spot to do said grinding quickly.

Oh shi--! TMK returns to the GGT. I played MK Wii for about 15 mins and it seemed more the of same to me. I was really into MKDS. Like, it was all I played for a couple months in the spring it came out. I might pick up the Wii one if I can find it cheap enough, like $20, but there are never good deals around here.
Buzz night! Goinng to finish P4 this week. Going to restart Fable II and continue with Valkyria Chronicles. GGT hates Fable, eh? Home is so better.
I haven't even seen Kungfu Hustle on Bluray anywhere yet.

Double karts added new strategies, the tracks were better, the graphics were better and the weapons were better.
MKDS was basically MKWii, but portable with solid tracks. Snaking was online, but playing Nintendo games online doesn't count for much. I think I may have done 3-4 matches online in MKDS.
MKWii had terrible weapons, balance, tracks, graphics...

Six seasons, 24 episodes a season, that's 144 episodes, plus the movie, plus the new season now. And it's all the same -- they had some nice chances to do something good, but they just stick with the same "safe" formula every season. 8\ I really wanted to see them switch protagonists to Tony back around Season 4 or so, but they just decided to kill him instead. 8(
I dunno... it's like American Idol -- I don't understand how that's still on the air either.
Hell, when you're talking games, has anything really kept quality and gone on for that long? The megaman games, maybe. Super Mario Bros was only at like 4 or so, if you stick to console versions, with 1 spinoff (the lost levels)? DMC is up to 4. RE is up to 5 with spinoffs, but until 4 re-invented the way the game was done, people were complaining about it getting stale.
*Shrug*
Not shitting on you for liking it at all. It's still good for what it is -- I'm just amazed with how little the formula changes that people are still psyched to see more of it.

The balance in MK Wii was what made me not like the game. I still have it but if the majority of the AI jumps in front of me the split second I make an error, that's not right or remotely fun. Mario Kart DS is Maio Kart king if you ask me, even if the online was flawed with "snakers" it was a blast all around (mission mode too).
Wish 24 wasn't spoiled for me  I've only seen S1 and the movie, ahh well...good stuff
Anyways, I've heard GH3 is compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour. My question is I've got the Rock Band 2 guitar (which is compatible with GHWT, not GH3) so does that mean I'll be able to play GH3 dlc with said guitar?

Yes, I think so, if you play the content in GHWT.
All the DLC is, really, is a note chart and the sounds that go with each note -- if the guitar is playing everything else in WT, I don't see why it wouldn't handle the DLC.

I like MKWii.
Mainly the fact that two people can play online from one console. And its fun.
Also, I bought Conan for $10 and I Hate it! I played it last night, had a good time. Try to play it today and it freezes at the loading screen! One day I'm going to find Conan and murder him. Just for that. It's not cool at all.
If I want to play a game I want to play it, not have the damn thing freeze on me when I'm about to play it. I'd rather it just didn't start up at all, instead of giving me hope thinking "ok, this might be the time!" and then see it freeze.
My life is over.
My soul has died.
I'm going to the corner to cry.
But for now, I changed my mind. It's not that good of a game anyways. I want some food instead.

I've barely posted here at all this month.
A quick run down of what I've been playing:
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts: Okay, the controls aren't great. The vehicles don't have the best handling. And I really did want an N64-style platformer. But the game has some kind of charm--a combination of the addicting vehicle creation and the self-deprecating meta humor--that makes me love it. The "protect so-and-so" missions suck, though.
Banjo-Kazooie XBLA: As a kid, I rented this and Banjo-Tooie a lot, but never owned them. I was kind of dissapointed to realize that most of my best memories of them were from Tooie. Still a fun little game I got for free.
Penny Arcade Adventures Episode I: Honestly, downloaded it weeks ago and only got through the intro area. But I enjoyed the gameplay and the humor, I've just been occupied with other games.
Left 4 Dead: Loving it. Great game with friends or a good group of strangers.
Mirror's Edge: Gameplay is great, really fun when you get into it and pull of a bunch of cool shit fluidly. Story is pretty useless.
Soul Calibur IV: Pretty much the first fighting game I've gotten into since the SEGA Genesis. Enjoying it.
Chrono Trigger: This is my first time playing this game. Shameful, I know. But I really dig it, other than brief "Where the fuck do I go?" moments. Frog is awesome BTW.
I also just finished watching the complete series of Firefly on DVD. Now I know this is like the Golden Child of the internet, but I thought...well, it was pretty good. But not amazing. The Chinese swearing started off kind of cool but quickly became really silly, it was too episodic for my taste, Inara was boring, and there were too many action sequences that became kind of boring--I mean, no one's going to die for real, so I just kind of drift off until the guns stop firing. The characters were really fun, though, and I'm interested in revisting them in Serenity.
I ALSO read Watchmen for the first time. That was some good shit.
I played twenty minutes of Mario Kart Wii. The first fifteen were trying to control it with the Wii Remote and hating everything. The last five consisted of plugging in a Gamecube controller, starting a race, getting hit with four items in a row, yelling, "fuck THIS GAME!" and never touching it again.

Sabbath isn't actually sunday, but its just easier to do sunday midnight to midnight as sabbath. And we like to not play certain types of games on sunday. So we tried lego star wars (a birthday gift from big bro to lil bro) and found that incredibly lame. Now that I finally have my own dualshock tree, I suggested Little Big, so we started that. We only got a couple minutes into the intro when something came up, but it looks very impressive. the two guys running around on a side scroller remind me of when we used to have fun playing Lost Vikings together. :D

Wasn't too excited for Eternal Sonata going in, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Fuckin beautiful game.
Does the PS3 version have trophies?
It's one of the very, very, very few games that use the sixaxis' motion controls in a workable, cool way.
Though I'm glad more games don't attempt to do this.
I turned it off immediately
I find it much easier (read: less frustrating) to use the analog for after touch.

Mak:
1) Don't think so.
2) Fair enough; some people (i.e., most reasonable people) hate the sixaxis motion controls, but that doesn't mean sometime, somewhere, it would be used well. Monkeys, typewriters, and Shakespeare sort of thing, I suppose.
3) Creeping up on the end of my Impossible run on Dead Space (and I take back most of the negative things I've said about the game, I'm getting pretty immersed into it now; maybe because it picked up the remnants of "horror" that Resident Evil seems to have dropped along the way?), and up for contention for next game to play through:

How many hours is Fable II? I've been meaning to play it, but Fable: TLC kept crashing on me on my 360, so I got pissed and said "I'll play them both through at some point in the future."

I plan on playing Fable II and Fallout 3 down the road as well. Which comes first will probably be determined by which I get matched up for on Goozex first as I won't buy either.
If I had both, I'd probably go Fable II simply because I've been playing Oblivion and could stand to play something different (need to finish it off, haven't touched it in a week--need to do Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles still).
Plus I'm a bit hesitant to get sucked into another Bethesda RPG (huge time sink)--so actually I may hold off on starting Fallout 3 (regardless of when I get it) until I finish up my dissertation. Should have a good bit of time for games and other shit this summer before starting my new job in August.
So yeah, I guess also factor in how much free time you have--Fable II is apparently pretty short and Fallout 3 can take over your life ala Oblivion from what I've gathered.
I'll take guinaever's advice.
I wouldn't. I thought Fable II was fun overall. I liked the combat, presentation, story (the whole episode in the tower was an interesting change of pace.), and the ability to build wealth via buying up property was just another little tidbit to keep me coming back into the game world.
To each their own, of course.

Yeah I really disliked Fable 2. The story didn't stick with me at all. I hated the way you interact with people too. It's way too contrived, with the little menus. And the jobs are boring.
I pretty much just did a few quests, married someone, bought a house, then sacrificed her at the temple. Then I sold it.
However, Last Remnant is a game that is much better than I thought it would be. And if anyone's playing Super Turbo in the GGT, send me a friend request so we can get some games going!
I agree that the menu system in Fable II was bad. There's d-pad hotkeys for potions, but still, it's way too convoluted for a console game. Heck, it'd be shitty even for a PC game. Menu in menu in menu in menu... bleh.
If LR shows up in the Amazon gold box for $20 or less, I'll bite.
Edit: LR did appear in the gold box! But for $30. Oh well, I'm sure it'll $20 sooner rather than later.

I'm about level 9 1/2 in Fallout 3, on my way to Rivet City for the main quest line. For whatever reason, I just go very slowly in that game.

This afternoon I finally beat Persona 4. It was fun, and I look forward to the sequel.
Now, I think I'm gonna take a RPG break for a few weeks before I get back to Valkyria Chronicles and my PS2 backlog. I've started playing Mirror's Edge and while I find it to be frustrating (I'm real bad at first-person games) at least there's not much penalty for dying. And I seem to die a lot.
I've also started playing Deus Ex (with the Shifter mod that Crotch recommended). I've just gotten past the Liberty Island part. I really wish they'd make more FPS games like this, then maybe I'd play more of them.
Finally, I've played a little bit of WipEout HD, trying to get thru the campaign. I've beaten about half of the 5th circuit so far.

These drawbacks are somewhat alleviated if you install the game to your hard drive, but it isn't a big enough difference to justify using up such a huge amount of drive space.
Things get better if you install the game on your hard drive using the New Xbox Experience dashboard, but it is by no means fixed. All of the problems are still there in slightly less disastrous form. If you don't have a hard drive, The Last Remnant isn't worth the time of day.
Look, I'm not saying the game is shit or anything. It actually looks a lot better than the reviews would indicate. If the PC version is fixed, I may pick it up at a halfpricebooks for $10 in 3 years.

You can not trust reviews half the time and you'd still be stuck with no reviews that redeem the game from a technical standpoint, installation or otherwise. If you find that installation remedies the problem to your satisfaction, thats great. You are however, in the extreme minority.

PS1 and NDS 3D graphics are some of the most beautiful limited technology... I don't know why I like it.
I like sprites. Not necessarily NES-era sprites, but the 16-bit and better sprites are ok. A game like KOFXII is a great example of 2D sprites done right (although a game like that is not easy or cheap to make these days).
I can't write LR off completely without playing it myself, but I admit it's low on my "to buy" list. And a 5GB install isn't that bad--a little above average for a PS3 game I daresay--but it is a lot for a 20GB 360.
Anyway, $20 or less and I'll consider it.

That could be part of it, but mainly he just hates technology and thinks HD graphics, online play, DLC etc. is ruining gaming.
When it's really just that he's not into FPS, western RPGs and the other big selling genres, which has very little to do with technology.
There's just a bigger market for that stuff than schmups, quirky japanese games, jrpgs, SRPGS etc.
As for graphics, I like the most realistic looking fantasy settings possible. Sounds like an oxymoron, but I mean I like games like Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Oblivion etc. Realistic graphics--but in a fantasy setting. HD has definitely made me more of a graphics whore for sure.

It's absurd to think "gaming" is being ruined. It doesn't take guts to say that you're unsure if MMO's are games or not, just a willingness to be noticed.
Christ, I grew up around god knows how many people who thought that Green Day and The Offspring were killing "punk rock," but that's still an absurd notion. It's pretentiousness of the highest order: the egoism involved in believing that what you personally prefer is, in toto, the boundaries by which the pinnacle of an activity (music, gaming, sports) is defined; further, that any deviation from that standard is an all-out assault on the perfection of the industry.
He's just an internet persona; and if not, then I pity the anguish he deals with when looking at what gaming has become. But, hey, if he thinks HD graphics are killing gaming, and not, say, weight loss games, games to help stop smoking, etc. then I can't simply buy that he's who he claims to be.

It would be easier to be pro-technology if certain new technologies werent so shitty.
For example, once HDTVs that can actually display legacy content properly a) exist, b) overcome the disadvantages that current flat panel tech has vs CRT and c) hit competitive prices, I pretty much have no choice but to drop most of my objections to them.
Hell, I could see myself getting a bigger TV someday, I just have high standards for what a TV is going to need to do.

As for the last remnant trolling - I have it installed and there is texture pop-in, but really, is that the worst thing ever?
If the first 4 seconds of a scene you spend 5 min or more in are blurry N64 textures, do you really remember those 4 seconds?
Nope.
Doesn't HDTV's not displaying legacy content correctly have mor to do with how that legacy content is formatted? for example a 480i PS2 signal is always going to look like ass on an HDTV, unless that image is reduced down to take up about 1/4th of the screen on that HDTV and is displayed at the native resolution? Displaying the original content at a resolution higher than 480i/p isn't something the PS2 is capable of doing - It would need to be an emulator or re-release that does that.
I think of it like you're looking through a window into a house. There's people and objects in the house. The PS2's window is only so big and only so clear. Up-rezzing a PS2 game involves changing the window that the people and objects are seen through, not the people and objects themselves. That's something that the PS2 cannot do. Like when you play a PS1 game on your PS3, it looks cleaner and a bit sharper, but the actual model and texture data is unchanged.
I thought that was how it works and that it's just always better to do that old stuff on an older TV, unless there's software involved that's changing the "window" you view that content through.
Huh? DMK: standard def sets can't even display legacy content properly, so why should an HDTV? That kind of statement kind of ignores the fact that "legacy content" isn't shot with HD video equipment. For traditional film content, you even have grain and other imperfections that will take away from the "purity" of a picture.
That said, I agree that the current gen of HDTVs will only get better. It's the age old question of when to jump in to technology because it's never going to be "perfected". It will only change and evolve as marketers and engineers see fit.

The whole native resolution thing is one of the limitations of fixed pixel displays. The old CRT HDTVs can do both 480p and 1080i natively.
If you could put a super fast and really good upscaler/deinterlacer in them, then it would largely be ok.
Right now you're going to have to buy a standalone video processor for high fidelity legacy output, but the entry cost is absurd. (http://www.anchorbaytech.com/products/systems/vp20.php)
As far as films, I dont watch movies, so thats a non-issue. I certainly understand that a lot of stuff is lost in the transition to consumer end video.
dmaul1114
01-12-2009, 09:24 PM
HDTVs will always be laggy with non-HD games.
But that is no reason for bias against HD consoles which play fine on HDTVs. Just keep an SDTV around if you want to play old games. I don't care as I don't give a shit about playing old games, but it's easy enough to have an SDTV around for old games and HDTV for new games, Blu Rays, HD TV etc.
jer7583
01-12-2009, 09:30 PM
yeah, having a nice SDTV will always be better/cheaper than doing everything on your HD set.
I don't give a fuck about most TV so I just use a widescreen computer monitor and an old SDTV for my gaming.
Nah, the economies of scale for TVs and other consumer electronics mean that HDTVs should replace SDTVs completely. LCD monitors have all but replaced CRT monitors for mainstream PC users already.
dmaul1114
01-12-2009, 09:38 PM
That is true. It will be hard to find them in a few years.
Oh well, either HDTVs will get better at SD content or people like DMK who care about playing old games will have something to bitch about.

It had crossed my mind to pick up a few extra $25 TVs from craigslist if the digital crossover ends up with people dumping their sets on the cheap. If I could get a HDTV for that much, I'd pretty much have to just because it was cheap.

And 4 wii games.
Now about two years ago when I joined the site I went nuts I had just gotten a ps2 and I owned an xbox, I had at least 18 games for the xbox and maybe 25-30 games for the ps2, plus my DS which I had 10 games for. Alas I sold most it to pay for other things. And I didn't play my DS very much.

Its a quasi tutorial. They sorta tell you how to do things but dont get too in depth. But they do let you play for a while in a section where wave after wave of people try to get in to the fort. There's no penalty if you miss them so its basically target practice. And yeah, if you're anything like me, you'll want to turn the sixaxis after touch off and use the analog stick. It's wayyyy easier that way. The Kai section protecting your dad on the bridge has been my favorite part so far.

A few of the 360 games are listed on Goozex and just on long wait. A couple are old games and not worth trading--college hoops 2K6 (brother gave it to me as he forget to throw it in when he sold his 360), Fight Night Round 3 etc.

Like I've said so many times, if he's so against technological advances, what the fuck is he doing on the internet?

I no longer own Devil May Cry 4 (I liked the game, but I'll admit I haven't played it in several months and will never play it again), DiRT (I love the game, but I own too many racers and since DiRT 2 is coming this year I'll move to that), and Silent Hill: Homecoming (I didn't think it was too bad, but I rather just spend my time with Siren: BC and Dead Space)
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k38/The_Mana_Knight/Gaming/Wii/WiiGamesE.jpg
That's the comparison between my PS3 and Wii Collection. I need to update my 360 collection picture one day (which is why I didn't post it). I pretty much happy with all my PS3 games except maybe one (but I'm keeping it for a certain reason). With my Wii, most I'm happy with, but need to play Sonic more (I got it for Christmas).
In case people don't know, the top left game is Battle Fantasia Asia Import. My collection will be back up to 41 for sure because I'll be buying Killzone 2, Sonic Mega Genesis Collection (or whatever it's called), and SFIV for :ps3:. SO4 will be bought on 360.
You need to alphabetize all your games like I do Jer. ;)

Last year I did alot of traveling last year between family in Jersey, NYC & Miami, and competing in YGO, where I traveled to Syracuse, Rochester, Toronto and even Detroit to compete in Regional Qualifiers & Shonen Jump Championships. All this traveling made me realize that I love road trips and I'm slowly getting meeting strangers. I actually think it'd be cool to meet CAGs in real life.

If it's better than yours, yet still sucks yours must be pretty bad according to you.
Dude to be fair, and not to out & out flame you, but you like games that most other people would hate. It seems to me that if there's a specific aspect of the game and / or characters you like, that you're willing to overlook certain (READ: terrible) aspects of a game. In other words, you like bad games. Not saying this is wrong or anything, but it doesn't surprise me (nor should you be) that you liked a game many other people frowned upon.

Honestly though, as far as Legendary goes, I don't see what people hate about it. Seems like a pretty solid game so far.
Yes, it's obvious in parts that it's not backed by a big budget, but still it's solid.
It's an SRPG, lite on the RPG. It's pretty original since you control your characters in real time; I can't really compare it to anything else.
Eternal Sonata is kind of like it in the sense that your "action points" are a set amount of time to execute your [real time] moves.

Eh I'm just saying based on our prior clashes. Honestly I never even heard of Legendary up until this point. I'm pretty out of the loop as far as Video Games go. I've been spending the past 4 months dealing with lady issues, getting better at Pro YGO and school / work. Only gaming I've really done is WWE 09 & the GH/RB games.
Gotten back into the swing of things tho, playing my NDS while I poop. Slowly going through Castlevania OOS & Legend of Zelda PH.
Read about the whole 1up EGM thing. Pretty sad over the whole EGM thing as I used to read them alot from 98-2000, but stopped shorty after I discovered Game FAQs, Daily Radar, IGN and the whole internet thing the rich white folks were jabbering about.
On a funny note, I finally listened to a pod cast, the CAG cast actually. Wasn't too bad and I enjoyed it. Although I wish it was a tad bit shorter, as it dragged in places.
