Ok, I've definitely dogged on GTAIV a little bit for it's bad qualities, but the bank robbery mission was probably the best one I've played in a GTA game so far.

I've survived day one back at school. Why people would get shit faced tonight perplexes me beyond belief...
In any case, I'm pumped for the new Phantasy Star game coming out on the DS. Here's a link to the thread if anyone's interested who hasn't already checked it out: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196691&page=3
Someone on the second page posted a link to his CAG blog with a hands on review. Here's a link to the blog: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?username=seannola
It sounds really sick. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the game. Like the potential for voice chat :D

So what's the verdict on the RE5 demo?
I posted about it last night, but I played some more after that so here are my thoughts. Bear in mind this is only on single player, still need to try out the co-op.
1. Looks great
2. Plays just like RE4 with an added AI/co-op parter
3. The Knife seems awfully weak, I don't recall it being so weak in RE4.
4. As with RE4 for me, the game is a bit too difficult. I really wish the RE games had difficulty settings as I'd have no shame in playing on Easy.
So basically, if you loved RE4 you'll probably love RE5. If you didn't , then RE5 isn't going to change your mind.
I thought RE4 was so-so, so I won't be buying it. Buy my friend who is moving in soon loves the series, so he may pick it up and want to do Co-op which I'd be up for.

I'd like to start Chrono Trigger and actually muscle through some of Fallout 3's story.
I feel like I've hit the point where I don't want to buy new games until I can't stand the current games I'm juggling. And I just don't see that being a bad thing
dmaul1114
01-27-2009, 02:51 PM
As for February.
I'll be playing TWENY if I can get into and don't quit before the, playing The Shivering Isles and then moving on to Fable II which I just received from Goozex.
Possibly RE5 if my friend/roommate picks it up as noted above. Also want FEAR 2, but not willing to pay $60 for it. SFIV is a no go as I don't much dig fighters enough any more, much less enough to have to buy the game and a stick/pad to play it since the 360 dpad is useless.
I feel like I've hit the point where I don't want to buy new games until I can't stand the current games I'm juggling. And I just don't see that being a bad thing
That's absolutely the way to go. I've been doing that this gen--not building a back long other than sometimes having a couple games I got off Goozex waiting in the wings.
It's stupid to have a backlog of games you won't play for a long time as they would have just gotten cheaper if you'd waited and bought them when you had time to play them. And I enjoy gaming more when I can take my time with the game(s) I'm currently playing and not feel like I need to rush through them to get on to the pile of unplayed games sitting in the shelf staring at me.

Killzone 2

SFIV TE Stick
RE5
Are my "must buys". I'm interested in Star Ocean and some others, but I'll hold off on those. I'm trying not to buy so much day one stuff anymore.
I will probably also import Yakuza 3 since it's future in the US is in doubt, too.
4. As with RE4 for me, the game is a bit too difficult. I really wish the RE games had difficulty settings as I'd have no shame in playing on Easy.
I agree it was on the more difficult side. Having that annoying inventory management didn't help, either. I did enjoy the game overall though, so I'll be getting 5. At minimum, I think the co-op will be a blast.

I loved RE4, played the hell out of it. I don't know if it's the fact that I've played Gears now or what, but I'm not loving RE5.
Yeah, that's my real gripe too I guess. If they're going to make the series an action series were your facing waves of enemies, then it's time to scrap the tank controls and limited ammo and just make it a full on 3rd person action game like Gears.
It's not scary anymore, so there's really no justification for having clunky controls (to make it harder to get away) limited ammo (to make it more tense) etc. etc. So they really need to either make it a full action game with good controls, or revert the next game more back to the survival horror genre.
Meh, series just not my cup of tea I guess. I've played a few of the games over the years (RE1, REmake, Code Veronica and RE4) but they were all games I just liked rather than loved.

SFIV on the PS3 for me. I'm not sure what else in February I might want to get.

SL4IN
01-27-2009, 04:12 PM
With the RE games, it's understandable for them to be more action oriented than other survival horror games. The main characters are trained police officers that know how to use various weapons.
This is opposed to the Silent Hill or Fatal Frame main characters, where they are normal/regular people with no extensive training in weaponry. It's more understandable for RE to move into an action/shooter genre, with that said, I'd still like it if it was a little more about zombies/survival horror, rather than mysterious plague/disease taking over people and making them zombie-like.
I liked the old RE games, I really liked RE4, and I'm sure I'll really like RE5. The isometric view and pre-rendered back grounds worked, but it had to advance with the times and that's what Capcom did. I just hope it isn't milked to death and there's actual improvements with each iteration.

I'm sorry, but if you didn't get a sense of panic when there are 20-30 enemies in your immediate area, plus a huge axe wielding executioner chasing you in a not-so-big area, I'm not sure what to tell ya.
Same goes for the chainsaw dude. I know I panicked trying to kill him without him cutting me in half.
And that was just from the demo.
Your definition of survival horror is a lack of ammo. You're a wuss, then.
It's hard to be scared when you can take them down so easily and run away easily as well.
Keep saying it's ammo though.
In summary, I got a sense of dread from the older RE games and felt really satisfied/accomplished once I actually beat it and survived. And that I'm going to miss.
That's something I never got in RE4 and probably won't from RE5.
That was like beating the Gears titles. "Well, that's done."
RE5 is RE4.
I'm complaining that it isn't survival horror. I won't mind playing the game as I know I'll enjoy it.
I'd just rather go back to being scared of enemies and/or dying.
Just because you can defend yourself doesn't mean it isn't survival horror. You don't feel any sense of dread being alone surrounded by enemies relentlessly trying to kill you? In 5, you have a partner, but the atmosphere is the same. You're a foreigner in a strange land, with a limited supply of ammo and nothing but hostile enemies with supernatural abilities. Not every horror game can be Haunting Ground.

Weird. I never got the sense that taking out enemies was "easy". And I thought you liked running away? You want to die every few seconds to feel scared? Me, I'd just get frustrated and annoyed.
The old RE games were good for their time, but that design was based on the available technology. I can't imagine you'd still be as scared having played that same routine now as you were the first time you played it.

Nope. You can run circles around them.

No, they don't all drop ammo--you can't blindly shoot stuff like an FPS and expect to get full up right after.
Sigh. Oh well, if that's how you feel, then why don't you play most of the game using just the knife and kicks then. 8-)

I honestly cannot believe that people want the old style RE games back. I've played through all the RE games except the Gun Survivor ones (including RE: Deadly Silence, REmake etc...) and Resident Evil 4 is by far the best.
Hell, Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games ever made.
Honestly, it's kind of funny because some people are complaining about how your character is immobile and the controls suck, and others are complaining about how your controls are to good and don't inspire enough "dread" because they're to easy to use.

But games where I can shoot like crazy don't scare me.
Actually...... the Fear 2 demo creeped me out (just the school), and I probably wouldn't have finished it if there wasn't someone with me.
But yeah, I love games that scare me. Siren creeped me out, even the half hearted SH: Homecoming made me whimper going from room to room, and I'm really hoping Dead Space is similar though there is a lot of firepower in that one.

It looks like all of their online pre-orders have the low price guarantee, which means that if the price drops on the item between now and the release date, you'll get it for the lower price that the item has dropped to. I wouldn't bank on this happening, however.

I think that RE made a good transition from one type of scare to another. And it's also very logical and more "zombie" like kind of scare.
In the old RE games the scare came from running out of supplies and your own inability to avoid enemies. (and shock value)
In RE4/5 the scares come from atmosphere and the relentless tenacity and numbers of the undead. In RE4 I still ran out of ammo sometimes, but the RE5 demo was very tense because I felt like these enemies were coming from everywhere, slowly, but surely getting in the cracks and overwhelming you. Even though you're capable to fight and have ammo to shoot back, there's two zombies for every shot you take, plus some big fucker in the background that isn't going down anytime soon.
I prefer the latter, but the former RE games weren't bad, until they got way too overdone.

My February pickups are SF motherfucking IV probably for 360, though I want that PS3 CE badly, The 360 TE stick, and Sonic Genesis Collection for 360. I actually want the PC SFIV, but it's not coming until June, and I'm willing to bet money that the 360 SFIV will have better online than the PS3 version.

Dead Space, from what I've seen and heard from my roommate, is more like the older RE games. You do get lots of ammo at times, but he typically got ammo for the guns he didn't give a shit about, so he found himself really preserving ammo, which made him appreciate the game a little more.

Yeah, for me it's more that survival horror has just never really been my cup of tea so I should probably just stay away. Which I am, I dropped Dead Space off my Goozex queue after playing the demo and will only play RE5 if my buddy picks it up and wants to do co-op.
So I don't expect the games to change, it's easy enough to just avoid genres you don't care for and spend limited gaming time on games you have fun with.
Though I do still fail to see why the RE games can't include a difficulty option as I'd be more likely to play for the experience if there was an easy setting with more ammo, less damage etc.

I agree with this. RE4 wasn't scary at all. I didn't find Dead Space scary either. I don't scared by things popping out, running out of ammo. The only games to ever "scare" me are the Fatal Frame games. Mostly because of how fucked up the stories are.

I wasn't shaking in my boots, but the games were designed to have those "make you jump" moments out of cheesy horror movies with dogs jumping through windows, zombies popping up all of a sudden etc.
The only game I can recall that scared me a bit were some parts of FEAR that were creepy as hell. The school in the FEAR 2 demo would be a good example. But that's more creepy than being scared per se.
But I haven't played a lot of "scary" games as I hate survival horror game play. Clunky controls, lack of ammo, lack of items. I just find that annoying and frustrating and I play games to relax so the genre just never clicked for me.

I love the atmosphere when its just you and your partner slowly walking around a building with all sorts of nasty shit remains on tables and whatnot. Then a few minutes later you have 20 zombies coming at you through windows, doors, ceilings, and busting down walls.
Very exciting, and the control style makes it more human feeling.
For those of you that played Professor Layton, did you feel that some of the puzzles were ... "unfair"?
In what way? They do mix up the easy ones with the hard ones, so I guess that's kind of a cheesy way to make the game more "difficult", but the game does give you a fair number of hints, there's no time limit, and you can always use the save system to preserve your progress should you get tied up by the "wrong" puzzles.

I don't think it's that folks don't like the "old style" RE games, just that they don't necessarily think that Capcom needs to go back in that direction for any of the new games. At least, that's how I feel. :p

I get really scared in scary games. Even the subway parts of Fallout 3 make me uneasy.

Half Life 2 was the scariest thing ever. I still haven't finished it.
I had to get somebody else to beat Ravenholm for me. I couldn't go any further.
This was a while back. I was probably 12 or 13, and I was a big sissy then.
Scary as hell..
Also, Rolando is now $5.99 for iphone/ipod touch. I picked it up a couple days ago. Lots of fun!
Which should I play:
Skate 1 or 2?
Blitz: The League I or II?

Condemned was creepy, but not scary.
Fatal Frame 1 was very scary to me when I first played it. I played with headphones and in the dark the whole time. I still have to play through 2 (and 3, i guess.)
Resident Evil was scary as hell. This is seriously the most amoral, unsettling, and atrocious crime against humanity ever put on disc:

I remember watching that when I played the original with my friend, like a decade back.
It was sorta cool then, but still pretty cheesy.
But now, oh man!

Skate you can jump in on either one to be honest. I see them very equal. skate 2 has more to do, but if you've never played the first I don't think it'll matter.
Also, Rolando is now $5.99 for iphone/ipod touch. I picked it up a couple days ago. Lots of fun!
Do you actually pay Roger's ridiculous fees for iPhone plans or is there a way to get it on another network that I'm not aware of?
I was thinking of getting skate 2, but skate is almost the same and $40 cheaper
What, is it Halloween already?
Fallout 3 can be creepy/intense. I still have to start up Dead Space one of these days...
