Theres 100 million DS sold and nearly 50 million PSPs, both at mass market prices. I expect the overlap between the two to be similarly small. As in less than 10%. Probably closer to 5%

...in english? overlap with what? cuisinart shoppers? lesbians? people who only own the first two Bjork albums?

It's all about context. Besides, Nintendo's in it's own world, man. Sellin' DS consoles with Lisa Kudrow and her "close friend" ain't exactly a way to appeal to the market as we currently know it.

I still have yet to understand what amazing games people are playing on their 360's that make it so much more superior to the PS3. Pretty much everything is mult-platform
I wonder the same thing.
...I think I just watched Chris Redfield punch a boulder into submission.

WTF, Capcom???
That part was awesome. It made me laugh because ever since they revealed Chris in RE5 my friends and I have been laughing at how ridiculously buff they made him. So seeing him beat the shit out of that boulder just fit the bill.

Lady GaGa = prefab in disguise. Pure Machiavellian splendor selling consumerism to those who don't like consumerism.

EDIT: Boulder punching? SOLD!
If that means her music is really fun to listen to, then you're right!

for anyone who likes Lady Gaga, give Boyz Noise a chance... I can see why Lady Gaga is fun, but the feeling of lack of talent I get from anything that girl does (I think her personality just pisses me off  ) makes me really hate her stuff.

If you want good original shit Boyz Noise is hot and creative IMHO... In fact you've probably heard their music while gaming but never knew it. they had "& Down" in GTAIV...

I don't care about someone's personality, looks, or whatever else when it comes to music. If it sounds good, then I like it. I wouldn't care if Lady Gaga was really a tranny. I'd love to know when music became serious business. While I'm currently going for my masters in chemistry, a long time ago I almost went for a music degree (I still enjoy writing music, and I play the viola in various orchestras as a side job). I changed my mind when I saw what elitists all the people in that program were. All they did was complain about how bad music was nowadays, and how their taste in music made them so much better than everyone else. Music should be fun, that's all I care about.

Anyway, unless the OST versions are different, the in-game music in Madworld loops fairly quickly. I was just playing the game about 10 minutes ago, and most tracks are about a minute and a half long. Again, maybe the versions on the OST are longer. I hope so.

 well I don't care what a person likes or hates or dresses up as, but when it comes to their personal life, if they are plain assholes, I really can't like them like I wish I could. I come from a family who loves anaylizing psychology so it makes sense why I do it. I love people, but I have a harder time liking people if they are known already as assholes. whatever >_<

the OSTs songs are alonger like most OSTs. It has a defnite begininng and end as well as lyrics not repeated (other than the chorus). Thumbs up from me since it's been a while since I've heard an original game OST in this style.

been playing Phantasy Star Portable... fun game, and it's on sale at Gamestop next month (as well as Valkyrie Chronicles) so get it if the price turns out good.

I was told around $200-300. Pretty broad range I know. Its cause it comes with over 10 games (some sealed) and an 8 GIG memory stick.
I'm also not 100% if I want to get rid of it, but I need $$$.

I bought Caster, Aquaria, Obulis, and Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble off of Steam today.

I was able to beat Caster; that game is amazing. You are basically a super human or something in it. You can run at very high speeds and jump incredible heights. Two of the weapons deform the terrain—one lowers the terrain and the other makes the terrain grow. It was kind of short; just as I gained full power I beat the game. Hopefully the next couple episodes don't take too long to make. I really want to see how this game gets expanded.

Obulis is really good, albeit it is getting extremely tough now. It is basically a puzzle game where you cut ropes and chains to set these orbs in motion. The objective is to get each colored orb into its respectively colored container.

Sony's major announcement is FF13 versus is going to the wii

and also metal gear solid 4 is being ported to dream cast

I'd forgotten how good Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is, all the jokes about the Fat Man are classic, I LOL'd at the bit where he walks into the bar and Mike says "all you can eat? the jokes on them" then it cuts to Raoul Julia looking at the fat man and Tom says "dammit, I'm running the Prime Rib special today"

Yeah Mad Monster wasn't very good, I struggled through that one myself.

The new Ep of Cinematic Titanic was good to Mak. In the film they have philipino actors with blackened faces playing black servants (racist much ?). So the jokes prety much write themselves, at one point Josh Weinstein says "I'd be less offended if they stuck a big nose on and called them Jew-face".

I'd love it personally. As I've said many times the ideal situation is for MS and Sony to partner up. Then we have their machine pushing graphics, online gaming etc. and Nintendo doing whatever they hell they want to do with their machine.

Plenty of competition, the SNES/Genesis era had only those two as real players and that was the golden age of gaming. No need for a 3 consoles in the market--especially when 2 offer pretty much identical types of gaming experiences. That just splits games across more consoles and requires us to shell out more cash and clutter up the home theater system with 2 nearly identical consoles.

Your home theater system is cluttered? When did you get a PS3?

I don't have one, and will never buy one since I don't even play games on the 360 that much anymore. But even without one it is a bit cluttered as I just have a TV stand with 3 shelves--with the receiver, HD Cable box and Blu Ray player taking up one--leaving the 360 to sit on the hardwood floor beside it. But clutter is relative, others have a ton more shit than that in their systems and it doesn't bother them at all. But I'm a neat freak and minimalist and like having as little shit as possible laying around.

I just see no point to own both unless you're a super die hard gamer and have to play the handful of AAA exclusives on each. Too costly and too much crap to cram in the home theater IMO if you're not a hardcore gamer since the gaming experiences are so similar.

We'd be much better off with a joint Sony/MS effort competing with Nintendo. Plenty of competition to keep good games coming, and the Sony/MS first party games all in one place. But it's a pipe dream and won't happen, it's more likely one of the two will just drop gaming all together a generation or two down the road than it is that they'd ever partner up.

You do have a point. Maybe if Sony and Microsoft just abandoned the console business and made all of their games for PC, then we'd all get along. :grouphug:

But as far as competition goes, the more the better. If you ask Nintendo, they aren't competing with Sony or Microsoft, though we know that's mostly not true. Though I'm sure grandparents would love to play Killzone 2 and Halo 3 ODST.

Oh, clutter is hardly the main reason for me either! :D

I'd just love to have all the HD games in one place as there are some games on the PS3 I'd really like to play--just not enough to buy another console.

Reducing clutter is just an added benefit--more so if I move in with my girlfriend this summer since her condo is like 40% of the size of my current place. :D

Though again it may all be moot for me in the future anyway.....as of right now if forced to make a decision I probably won't buy another game console after the 360. Just getting to the point of not having the interest or time to bother with it anymore. But at the same time online gaming is a lot of fun and a good way to keep in touch with friends who live in other states etc., so time will tell I guess.

I do it a lot.

I'll be playing a game and kind of want to play it but just can't get motivated. Part of it is just being busy, tired and stressed out/burnt out lately. I enjoy playing games but many times when I do have free time I end up going out for beers or just sitting around watching TV or movies instead, or goofing online.

I think the big part of it is that games are interactive and thus take a lot more attention/effort vs. just laying on the couch and watching TV or a movie.

With gaming I'm playing Fable II (haven't touched it for a couple of weeks--but I'm liking it), Left 4 Dead (playing co-op with roommate so play that more) and have Prince of Persia and Fallout 3 waiting to be played. Will also get RE5 at some point to play with my roommate since he loves the series and the demo was fun in co-op.

Just a matter of getting motivated to get motivated to play through those games! Fallout 3 will wait until at least summer when I have more time--and to get a break from Bethesda RPGs after playing Oblivion over the past several months.

Honestly, when I do game I've been having the most fun with the 360 that I've had with gaming since the SNES era.

I think it's just being older (30), busier and tired/burnt out more often. That and part of it is just more sophisticated tastes with age and often getting more enjoyment out of watching a great film or reading a great book than playing a great game.

With gaming it's just cathartic and relaxing--kind of like watching a popcorn action move or something. And I just find myself enjoying that kind of stuff less than I used to. *shrugs*

While I still really enjoy them, and I feel I'm not overwhelmed by modern games, they do take a second seat to other things that I now enjoy more.

Sony needs to stop fucking around and drop the PS3 to $300. They need to do something, anything, to gain ground. They can't very easily. Howard Stringer (CEO of Sony corp.) is heavily pressuring SCE to break even/profit. And since PS3 hardware still sells at a loss, he's not letting them cut the price. Until Sony is profiting or breaking even on PS3, they aren't going to do anything about the PS3 pricetag. Some may say that cutting the price would meant to more game sales, but the only way Sony can make that back up is if people buy a significant number of PS3 software and accessories (and the people who want to wait for a price drop, aren't exactly the type to buy many games anyway). David Reeves (President of SCEE) even said that they did not drop the PS2/PS1 price until they would break-even profit, and that's what they are going to do with PS3. The most they will currently do is bundle, because including a game only costs the price of case, manual, and blu-ray disc.

Basically, they are willing to sacrifice market share just so they can be profitable.

And Sony isn't exactly giving away breaks to lose money such as:
-They cut the console from South Korea since the currency dropped significantly, and people were importing it from there to save a lot (keep in mind game consoles don't tend to sell a lot there anyway).
-There is no way anyone is getting around a cheaper PS3 repair, if they console breaks and someone doesn't have the receipt/warranty is up.

As consumers, close competition will benefit us. I'd hate to see Sony flounder like this and end up bowing out.The only region PS3 hasn't done that great in is North America. In the U.K., PS3/360 are much closer (360 was out much longer than PS3, when compared to the NA difference) and in Japan/most of Europe, PS3 is the #2 console. And if Sony is performing this way despite having a high price tag, that is another reason they aren't looking at a major pricecut just yet.

And put more PS1 games on PSN. I'm tired of them half assing that.Ugh, I've explained it too many times. Placing PS1 games in the store isn't as easy as people think.
John Diamonon replied on August 14, 2008 at 10:18 am

When developers first created games on the PSone, not many companies accounted for their games being ported in the digital space, 10 to 13 years later. The reason why you don’t see too many games on the PSone classics right now is because there are so many legal and licensing challenges for the developer. It’s possible that the developer no longer owns the IP, or the rights to the music, voice overs, images, etc.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/08/14/bionic-commando-rearmed-and-street-fighter-alpha-available-today-on-the-psn/comment-page-1/#comment-98744

For an example, if a game uses particular music, art, etc., it needs to be re-licensed for use.
In Japan, companies like Square Enix and Konami have supported the PSN by re-releasing treasured PS1 classics onto the PS Store. However, the rest of the world's catalog has been quite lacking. Yoshida explained that these digital downloads don't offer much profit, calling the potential monies "insignificant." He also noted that there are many issues involving licensing, especially with the music found in older games. That usually adds to the difficulty of bringing back PS1 games.
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/sony-exec-admits-we-havent-done-enough-with-third-parties-for/

And there's also some publishers who no longer exists, and some people who prefer not to have their games on PSN due to previous issues with SCEA (looks at the old President of Working Design when people asked about Arc The Lad as a PS1 download in NA).

It really comes down to, trying to re-license old games is a pain (whether it be VC or PSN) and for what they sell for (despite all you have to go through) doesn't make it worthwhile many times. If SCEA/SCEE just placed any PS1 game in the Store, they'd be facing legal issues from someone wanting their share or whatever (because its technically their game or they have some part in it).

So I feel my time is very important and can't be "wasted" on gaming (although I don't see why not .. its just as valid a hobby as reading or watching movies).
Yeah, I know how business works. At least they aren't cheapening out on production to drop the price, other than removing PS2 BC. Not that I really care about PS2 BC.

And I don't like paying $55 for a controller, so I only have one, the Sixaxis my system came with. I don't like buying accessories unless I have to. Software, I'm still waiting on a cheap copy of Uncharted. Sony's first party games take forever to go down in price now.

The only region PS3 hasn't done that great in is North America.

Definitely. North America is a huge market though. At least PS3 is doing well enough overseas.

Ugh, I've explained it too many times. Placing PS1 games in the store isn't as easy as people think.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/08/14/bionic-commando-rearmed-and-street-fighter-alpha-available-today-on-the-psn/comment-page-1/#comment-98744

For an example, if a game uses particular music, art, etc., it needs to be re-licensed for use.

http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/sony-exec-admits-we-havent-done-enough-with-third-parties-for/

All I'm really asking for is what the Japan store has as far as Square Enix, Capcom, and Konami games are concerned.

And maybe it shouldn't be about pure profit, but about pleasing your fans and the people who paid hard earned money for your system.

"sophisticated tastes."

Meh, what else would you call it?

I used to enjoy spending a ton of time on games, action movies, etc. etc. Now I'd rather spend my free time on serious movies, good books, etc. etc. Though I do still enjoy games, action movies etc.--just less so and less often than in the past.

Seems to be the norm for most people with aging be it entertainment, types of food you like etc. etc. Taste/interests become more "sophisticated" with aging, having more disposable income etc.

I used to sit around and drink soda/cheap beer, eat some cheap crappy food and watch crappy movies or play games. Now it's good food, good beer and good movies more often than the more frivolous stuff.

But to each their own, wasn't trying to sound superior or anything. Just saying how my tastes/interests have changed over time. *shrugs*

I think that sounds right...when people get older their tastes often do get more sophisticated and refined.

but I don't think I'll ever get over gaming and dumb action movies, though I don't watch The Last Dragon and Showdown in Little Tokyo twice a weekend like I did when I was a kid. Sunday through Thursday, I pretty much game at night from like 9-12, then read from 12-1, then wake up groggy as shit for work at 7:30. but its worth it! :D Sometimes I stay in on weekends to game even more, though it never really works out...I usually just end up going out at 11pm instead of the usual 8 or 9.

but I'm happy to have a pretty sophisticated group of friends who can still get drunk on cheap beer and act like idiots. Unwinding is important.

words words words. the rest of the post is just above, lazy. so go read it there.

Me? I'd call it "taste." Assuming mine is more sophisticated than anothers assumes (1) that taste is something that can be objectively measured, and (2) categories of "high culture" and "low culture" exist.

Which is a sham, and lame, and worst of all, pretentious. Do you really *need* to define your tastes as "sophisticated"? Are they, really? Compared to what?

If you think you're more "sophisticated" because you like Stone beers instead of Pabst Blue Ribbon, then you've misplaced yourself in American culture, because you're mistaking your position as a cultural *consumer* for a position as a cultural *ambassador/producer*.

When I think of "high culture," I think of the trend in the post-WWII era, back when refrigerators were becoming household appliances. Like Blu-Ray players, they appeared in wealthy folks' homes first and most prominently. So wealthy folks devised (not intentionally, mind) foods that would show off the fact that they had a refrigerator, and were, therefore, wealthy and of high-class.

What awesome treats did we get from that?

Mana, you're a nice guy, but you need to stop. You can't keep defending Sony.
Let's be honest. They're failing.Tell me Sony is failing when they've been lighting up Japanese sales charts as of recent, and many PS3 games have done very well on European sales charts. That's definitely not failure.

I already know your preference since I've noticed you buy most of your multi games on one platform. ;)
Yeah, I know how business works. At least they aren't cheapening out on production to drop the price, other than removing PS2 BC. Not that I really care about PS2 BC.I'm glad they aren't. I was concerned they would in order to cut cost (they did it with PS2 for sure, because even I know the PS2 hardware was built very cheaply). Although I like my PSP Slim, it kind of feels that way too.

And I don't like paying $55 for a controller, so I only have one, the Sixaxis my system came with. I don't like buying accessories unless I have to. Software, I'm still waiting on a cheap copy of Uncharted. Sony's first party games take forever to go down in price now.Yeah, I explained in another somewhere in the GGT that SCEA does not drop prices of their first party games, until just before the next installment comes out (I'm betting Uncharted will drop price in August 2009, since SCEA normally reveals its GH lineup in August).

Definitely. North America is a huge market though. At least PS3 is doing well enough overseas.I honestly think that's what they are more concerned about. Oh course people may look at NA sales and consider it bad, but Sony mostly looks at it from a worldwide point of view (like most publishers).

All I'm really asking for is what the Japan store has as far as Square Enix, Capcom, and Konami games are concerned.

And maybe it shouldn't be about pure profit, but about pleasing your fans and the people who paid hard earned money for your system. In Japan, licensing isn't AS complicated since most of those games were made in Japan, where they have everything in place (there are also various people who translated within the U.S., who don't have to be considered when bringing a download to Japan). Japan isn't exactly sue happy like NA either (where people even sue for fast food restaurants making them fat).

I'm honestly mixed about PS1 downloads. Keep in mind for many years, PS1 was my favorite console (and still has some of my favorite games of all time). I have tons of OPM, PS Underground, etc. demo disks sitting around. I'd say I roughly enjoyed most of the games back when I got the disks. Now when I try playing many of those games, I start to wonder what I was thinking, because they just don't hold up well. Many PS1 games suffer from sloppy controls, due to their being a divide in the market (some had an analog controller, some didn't) and many have some graphic issues. Mostly the stuff which held up for me was 2D PS1 games or a few RPGs/shooters (vertical and side-scrolling).

Unfortunately, whatever SCEA puts up, they aren't just going to put up niche games, because they didn't sell too well years ago (so they will assume they won't sell well). They are more likely to pick games like a Need for Speed caliber, which sold well, but may not hold up too great. I know some would like Intelligent Qube up, but I can pretty much guarantee SCEA wouldn't even consider that game due to selling bad years ago. SCEA is the type of publisher who looks at games where if they see it selling well, they want to publish it. If they see something as not selling well, they aren't going to bother with it (One friend of mine at SCEA told me certain games almost got passed up because of that very reason), like with some JRPGs (which is why XSEED published Wild Arms instead and why Coded Soul PSP never came stateside). SCEA is heavily considered about the profit something can make (and part of the reason they don't bother with PS1 downloads on top of licensing, just not enough profit since the main people who would buy them are the hardcore).

But I never brag or say I'm more sophisticated

I think it's just being older (30), busier and tired/burnt out more often. That and part of it is just more sophisticated tastes with age and often getting more enjoyment out of watching a great film or reading a great book than playing a great game.

Just usin' your words, darlin'.

But there's no superiority there. Everyone should do what makes them happy as life is short and that's all that matters. And it would take a pretty foolish person to make claims of superiority based on their hobbies and tastes.

Yes I'd say the person that likes fine beer/wine, ethnic food and art flicks has more sophisticated/refined tastes that the person that drinks Bud Light, watches Rambo and who's idea of a great meal out is Applebees. Sometime (EST) between 7-9 is probably best. Otherwise Thursday could work (maybe).
But I can probably flex for most of the day tomorrow. Tuesday is elite.

That should work. If you send a pm around an hour before, that'd be great. Somethings I'll never forget, but somethings I forget incredibly quickly.

I can't wait to get hated for this, but Flo Rida's new album is out tomorrow!!!
THAT'S RIGHT, I FRIGGIN WENT THERE.

So I got back today, played a little, including Devil May Cry 3. It's been about 4 months since I even played DMC4, so I was surprised when I got past the boss I had trouble with last, the half-naked, orange-haired Witch. I also went through a couple of more levels, but the game is still the toughest game I've played, especially since I'm going through on Yellow (Gold is easier, and they don't explain that well).

Less crazy is still crazy.

But you have Kristen Kreuk and Maria Ozawa, so y'all can't be that bad. :)

They are making fun of them... yet promoting the game at the same time.

I think they just really wanted to get in on the tourney...

I think it might be the beginning of the end of my 2nd 360 here. When I turned it on a few minutes ago, when it went from the 360 logo to the Dash, it was interrupted by a blue screen for about a second. :(

The only XNA game I bought was that metalhead super smash bros. game. Guitarpocalypse Z or some shit? Anyways, it really sucks.

I don't even remember. It looked like a bootleg Smash Bros. that came alive in MS Paint.

03-31-2009, 11:48 AM
Yeah, pretty sure that's it.
There's a special attack where a giant cat (it's like a real picture) just drops down and shoots lasers or something.

That was the only cool thing, and the only reason I tried the demo. :)

So my school has these terrible speakers come in and talk to us about various subjects, but mostly about their college, the Bradford School. Back in October we had Pete, who talked about the differences between men and women while demonstrating that some men are VERY similar to women. Then in December we had...Pete again. Same speech. In January we had a woman talking about table manners. And now today we had another woman talking about job interviews. Mostly, about how wearing or not wearing pantyhose is the most important element of a job interview. Now a combination of it being first period, having heard the same basic speech four times, and this woman being an annoying tart trying REALLY hard to be funny and "relate" to teenage kids made me pretty pissed with the whole thing. And then she pulls out this gem:

Now I know most of you would rather be home playing Halo 2 on your PS3s...

AHA! YOU RELATE TO ME AS A TEENAGER AND NOW I AM INTERESTED IN THE THINGS YOU HAVE TO SAY!

Castlevania PSP just went GH, so you can get that and the delightful Dracula X for 20 ducats.

And have a reason to not look at your psp and ask "why the fuck did I buy you?"

It'll be even less at Gamestop come Sunday. It's one of the PSP games that is going to be on sale. I was beyond satisfied with that compilation at $30. For 15 or 10, it's a steal.

Aw, there's a good amount of stuff--Resistance Retribution/Syphon Filter series, Crisis Core, GoW:COO, all the retro collections (Genesis, Samsho, Shmups). Plus the thing plays media, does skype, GPS...

I intend to finally rebuy a PSP when the final model with UMD support comes out and when it drops to $100 or less. Might have to wait till PSP2 if there is some BC through accessories.

So another 5 years?

So you'd buy a PSP2 that would have some kind of dongle attachment to play legacy UMD games?

For now. Realistically, they still can't afford to lose that much more money on consoles. I think the economy of scale hasn't quite kicked in yet, although manufacturing costs are supposedly/allegedly lower now. But maybe in a few more months...or after E3!
