I loved FFXII, mostly for the great gameplay that needs to be adapted for more RPGs. It was like a single-player version of FFXI's combat system.

FFXI may be really difficult and archaic on the whole (the design sucks), but the battle system really kicks ass when you have a party that works.

And it takes a LOT of work to get to that point. That's the main reason I stopped playing.

Are all the games I can think of that used it.
All the Splinter Cells, Wind Waker, Fire Emblem... lesse... at least one James Bond game... I wanna say Rogue Squadron 3, but I can't quite remember.

And probably the various Pokemon games.

EDIT: Pac-Man VS! Can't forget that one.
EDIT2: Lord of the Rings, Harvest Moon, Sonic Adventures, The Sims, Mario Golf, some football games... Metroid Prime...
They didn't graphically kill the character in a violent cutscene either.
It's been a long time since I played it, but I vaguely recall Phantasy Star IV's big death fitting that description.

And Gremio in Suikoden gave me the gibblies, even if it was off screen.

Yeah, it works well with the programmable party AI in FFXII and you don't have to pay $15 a month just for more of that battle system. ;)

Also, while I loved the combat in both FFVII and FFX, I would love an option to easily skip summon animations (if this was already done in FFXII, then great. I never played it.). We all complain about hearing the same dialogue over and over in one type of game, but seeing the same cutscene in a JRPG is supposedly eye candy.

Also, I think I'm secretly trying to kill my 360. Why? Going for 1999 rounds in Gears 2 and IF, repeat, IF I can make it through 1 playthrough in Dead Rising I might go for 7-day survivor, aka a 14-hour marathon with no saving.

The problem is that I can't get through Dead Rising :( they spawn the Clown boss before the gun fight boss which means I face the Clown with a Golf club, a bowling ball and a purse :(

As far as video game knowledge, if you consider insider information part of that, then yes, it wouldn't be a contest because that's an unfair playing field. I consider myself well versed in games and pretty much everything except the state of current music.

I played through all of the original Rogue Squadron with a broken arm in a sling. These things happen.

And I don't buy the "games are easier now." Having the whole game start over with you stronger is just lazy design IMO. Even UN Squadron, which I spent hours of my life playing, allowed you regain your progress with these things called "Continues." And that came out in 1991. It wasn't a true save system, but in Mega Man X2, I didn't have to restart from the beginning as long as I wrote down the code after beating a level.

I fully understand that it is a design choice, and it makes the game feel that much more desperate, but I will not choose to grind prior to making my way through a game.

In theory, you shouldn't have to grind. But you have to play smart if you don't. The only thing that present any sort of challenge straight out of the box is dealing with the convicts after the first boss fight. Can't do it? Just make sure you hit a bathroom to save prior to attempting, if possible. Don't stop to save the girl they're having fun with. That's about the only part I had a problem with. And when I got to later in the game and I died (I think it only happened once...)? I'd done so much, restarting from my last save wasn't appealing, so I was okay with restarting, because I knew that being that much more powerful, with more life, speed, and damage meant that what took me so long before was going to only take a fraction of the time.

The game is excellent as it is. :)

The major hinderance of the game is the 1 save file, and you can only save at specific locations (many of which I haven't found yet). I know where one of the Horror books are (I need to find another so I can get 50%+ PP for every Zombie kill). For right now though, I'm going to set my sights on one goal: Zombie Genocider.

EDIT: Just saw the new Platinum Hits covers. I demand a Cover Replacement Plan, NOW!

If a game is designed for replayability, this in itself does not make it a a good game. Correlation is not causation.

I blame the waggle. If the Wii used just standard controls as an option for all the games, I'd put it on my main TV with the other consoles, and thus would probably be more inclined to fire it up. Every time I even think about playing Wii, I feel like it's more of a chore than anything else.

I finished MGS4 today. Could anyone explain to me wtf happened in the final scene? In the graveyard. Big Boss shows up, having apparently survived dying 3 other times (metal gear 1/2, the "body" in the van. And then he dies from Foxdie? but snake doesn't isn't contagious beyond that? It confused the fuck out of me, and I (relatively) understood the rest of the series (exception: see MGS2 plot).

Also, the ending cinematic was waayyyy too long. I think it was over an hour and a half long.

I'm kinda back now, but I'm still stranded in Hell. Played lots of games this past month.

I've had this shitty satellite internet for a few hours now, and goddammit does it ever suck. Suck suck suck! I'm trying to download the latest PS3 firmware update, and its taken me 20 minutes just to get to 3%.

I'm ready to move back to Atlanta now. So many things have gone wrong with this move to Nashville. I miss my zippy fast DSL most tho. But its either satellite or dialup here. That's like having the choice between AIDS or Herpes.

The developers specifically stated that they did not want Killzone 2 to feel like your ordinary FPS title, they wanted it to do its own thing and they went for a more heavy, realistic approach. Personally id rather have it control like COD4 which controls just perfectly, but its not my game to decide. I did not end up buying it because of the controls.

I havent been playing much of anything lately, i started Final Fantasy Tactics on PSP but havent been back to it, same for Dragon Quest Swords.

Web of Shadows is pretty fun.

I really enjoyed Web of Shadows. The pacing was a bit off, since last "act" takes longer than the other two combined (at least if i remember correctly). The voice acting sucked though (I'll always think of spider-man as sounding like the animated series spider-man). I just made the connection between games having a "different" mechanic control-wise, and people automagically not liking them.

GTA4 had cars that handled a bit more realistically (lets face it, still very unrealistic, but you actually had to break to take corners). People bitched about the driving because it wasn't what they expected, but was easy to get used to.

Fast Forward a year. Killzone 2. The aiming is slower. It takes getting used to. People bitch because its not the same weightless control as every other shooter.

Loved RE4, RE5 seems to add nothing but things I despise. Ashley was a lot easier, you could hide her or throw her in a dumpster. RE4 has replay value via the mercenaries just like RE5 too. I think I don't like the fact is it's a bad RE4 in my opinion. It's like they took RE4, re-skinned it and then made everything suck. The first time I played the demo I knew I wouldn't like it and behold, I didn't! I'm not saying it's a bad game, anyone can tell it's not a bad game. I just didn't enjoy it.

Seems like the people not happy with RE5 didn't play the game with a real co-op partner.

i didnt even need that to say that this game is meh....it is just meh. The AI just makes it worse. imo, the game feels bland and boring

If that's what it takes to enjoy this game then I retract my statement of it not being a bad game.
