wow I was totally unprepared for how awesome Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is. I love the engine. They really need to reuse this for an MVC3 or something stateside on the 360 with good online support.

The character selection isn't spectacular but the engine is awesome.

I dont see how that is a problem. It already got more characters than any VS games aside from MvC2 and left room for improvement in sequel.

well, the ones that CAGs would get would be special editions with an alternate cover and everything. I say hold onto them before ebay  I'm not an established name... yet ;)

If you do find a copy of january 09 STEP (http://www.stepinsidedesign.com/) magazine at a magazine stand, pick it up and look for the TM Sisters article. Two games I made are in there and you'll see my name :)

I'm hoping to already start shooting this Wed some of the commercials. The way that it looks like it'll go is I'll start shooting commercials (the setup is like a half hour saturday morning kids show... or at least that's what I'm shooting for), then once the costumes are done being made, shoot the ultraman/power-rangers parts.

First costume that is being made: JEKKI

Did anyone provide any methods for charge chars to deal with jump in mix ups whilst having no charge?

All I can really muster up is either get hit and hope a charged move hits after, or just to not let them get into that situation with anti air and spacing. The latter though requires some intense perception (psychic powers) which I unfortunately lack...

Seems like my worst matchups against my Hawk are Ken, Chun-Li, Cammy, and Guile. I figured that Dhalsim would be one of them, but it turns out that he's not all that bad, at least in the first parts of the round. If I can get a Storm Hammer in at least once, it's usually enough to break the opponent's confidence a bit, I've found. And now that my Hawk confidence has risen, I find myself wanting to fight Dictator more and more, since he's actually one of my better matchups.

Funny story involving a Ryu yesterday. I had perfected him round 1, then in round 2, I was about to smash him again (no perfect, though), and he disconnected. :) Made me all happy inside. Anyone else get disconnected like that?

That rat bastard Justin Wong!

"I AM MvC2." - Justin Wong, EVO 2008

A friend of mine is staying in NY with J. Wo, something about filming him, or whatnot. Once he gets back, I'll shed some more details. Knowing my buddy, he'll try to get Wong to play some Brawl, but I heard he's bad at it (I mean, he kinda got smashed in the Brawl tournament there). But then again, Evo '08 was quite a while back, so I guess I'll find out firsthand how he did.

with fighting games it's best to get experience before reading up on knowledge.

Yea man I can never figure out when to use the Ochio throw effectively. I try to charge the hcb motion and use the negative edge technique.. but I don't know what situations to use it in. Honda isn't really one of my main dudes but I'm ok with him (probably cuz I play him somewhat similar to how I play Blanka). I love how his fierce million hand slap does so much chip damage. I've seen other players do the jumping butt attack (don't know how to do this? no not the flying butt attack, just jumping) and then immediately Ochio throw.. it was pretty cool.

Mr. Beef
01-05-2009, 02:39 AM
Jumping butt is down+short in the air, I think. One of the kicks. Then you use the block or hit lag to Ochio throw to your heart's content. It's similar to how Hawk and Gief work.

Ryu is one of the simplest conceptual characters... time your fireballs right, shoryuken any jump in attempts, hurricane kick through the right projectiles, and know how to cancel your sweep into a fireball.

Knowing and perfecting that is good enough to get through most (if not all) players. Easier said than done, though. You don't need to learn anything complex like comboing f+fierce - c.mk - super to stay competitive.

I think that's why I like SF2 a lot. It's amazingly conceptually simple.

^That's pretty much Ryu's strategy, tried and true.

Really though, Darth, you gotta start with the basics. Combos are cool and all, but I feel they are nothing without a good head on your shoulders.

I personally think throws and projectiles in this game are immense, a huge part of the game. Therefore, you should practice on those (timing and execution). After you learn these, I'm sure the rest will follow.

With Ryu, the projectile dept. is easily taken care of. What usually augments the fireball game are zoning and spacing. Which I really think can only be learnt from practice against other people. These two things delve into reading the opponent and controlling space.

If you just shoot fireballs all the time, the opponent will most likely catch onto your rhythm and just jump over when you are unable to retaliate. So you just gotta mix it up and at the same time predict what your opponent will do.

However before all this Jedi mind reading stuff, you should be able to execute moves easily. Instead of thinking, "ok, now I have to do a qcf+p to do a fireball", you should work up to the point where you think "now I have to do a fireball." Basically, make excecution second nature. If you're already past this point, disregard it.

Really though, try not to complicate things, rather simplify them. Take it bit by bit. (ironically look at my post...)

Being very good at a game doesn't appear over night, it takes time. I sure as hell have a long way to go. Personally I haven't played sf2 as a kid, so it's a new thing to me. Whereas many others, both in the FGT and SF community have been playing this shit for years.

Another thing that makes Ryu slightly sicker in this version is his fake fireball. You go fireball, fireball, fireball, the opponent expects you to shoot another one, so they jump.. if you see them jump you can shoryuken.. or if you just expect them to jump you can do fake fireball -> real fireball or fake fireball -> shoryuken real quick. It's a pretty effective fake out.

Thanks for the help man. I've got the simple parts of him down, fireballs to make room, shoryuken when close, throws when possible. I don't have the timing perfect on the fireballs yet though, and I can't use the hurricane kick effectively.

I'm glad to hear you don't have to know the combos though. I almost have one of his bread and butters down (the first one on his shoryuken guide) but the rest were hard to pull off.

They were surprisingly ginormous in the original ST, if I remember correctly. I'd put up a pic comparison if images weren't blocked at my work.

I know it's weak, but I started my fighting game fanaticism with Marvel vs. Capcom in the arcades, back when arcades were still alive here on the east coast. Then I moved in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, then Street Fighter Alphas, then Capcom vs. SNKs, then Street Fighter 3s, blah, blah, blah.

I had Street Fighter II Championship Edition for the Genesis way back when, but it never clicked with me. I never got the execution right. It was only once I saw the crazy flashiness that was MvC when I really learned to play Capcom fighters, and 2D fighters in general.

I'm not a Shoto player but I didn't find the addition of a "fake" fireball all that hot for Ryu. Maybe I'm the only one.

Any decent Shoto player with a relative idea of timing, spacing/zoning is enough to ruin my day without the addition of a "fake" fireball.

I think it has its uses. Its not a necessary move, but it supplements Ryu's arsenal well. After all, jumping out of a corner trap relies on some predictive measure and if you're looking at the beginning animations of a fireball, you could be timing a jump out of it... and get Shoryukened in the face.

I haven't fooled around with it enough, though. If you fake fireball and the opponent sends out a projectile to nullify, will the recovery time be short enough to hurricane kick over it/ fireball nullify it?

I actually like the premise behind the fake fireball more than its use in gameplay. It's like Ryu's saying, "Ohhh, I faked you out, sucka!" every time he does it, heehee.

I've seen other players do the jumping butt attack (don't know how to do this? no not the flying butt attack, just jumping) and then immediately Ochio throw.. it was pretty cool.Man that ochio throw still weirds me out! I've actually incorporated it into my Honda game now, but it still comes out accidentally all the time. Like I'll block a move and start mashing punch to do a hundred handslap - then BAM, a surprise ochio comes out! I guess I'm just doing half-circle motions into my blocking stance without realizing it??

One thing I like to visualize when throwing fireballs is to imagine where the opponent would land after I throw one and he jumps. I use that to time my next one, adding a delay here and there. It's best to learn this in Ryu vs. E.Honda because Ryu SHOULD dominate the match if he fireballs right.

Cancelling sweep into fireball is also important because you can push them back a fair distance to start fireballing again.

J.HK - C.MK - HP Fireball is really good to know, but you shouldn't expect to hit with combos in a real match. I only combo if the opponent can't block a crossup, attempts and misses their reversal, or is dizzy. Also, if you do a combo and it gets completely blocked, you can then try to throw some time during the combo.

The only time I really hurricane kick is to get through projectiles (Guile's Sonic Boom, Yoga Fire, low Tiger Shot) and to build meter by running away. With Ken you can Juice Kick to get you really close if you anticipate a fireball, but that's Ken and we're talking about Ryu.

I spam fake fireball just to put it in their head that I can fake.

suko_32

Also, I can't seem to time it right where E. Honda goes through Fireballs.

I'm not a Shoto player but I didn't find the addition of a "fake" fireball all that hot for Ryu. Maybe I'm the only one.

Any decent Shoto player with a relative idea of timing, spacing/zoning is enough to ruin my day without the addition of a "fake" fireball.

Hadokens into shoryuken trap was one of my staples back in the day, so yeah, I'd agree with you there. I lost track of all the different versions of Turbo, Hyper, etc. though, so I don't remember how effective that was over all the iterations.

probably 'cause ken is white. i'm not even joking.

ryu is generally more solid than ken because he has a better super and better recovery on fireballs, whereas ken needs to be able to tick throw and play DP guessing games which are great when they work in your favor, but they aren't very solid.

Why do I see more Ken's than Ryu's?I think it's because Ken has the "fun" versions of the shoto moves. The multi-hitting hurricane kick is fun, even though the knockdown version may be strategically preferable. And the FLAMING dragon punch is a sentimental favorite... plus more hits = more fun.

What are some strategic applications for Ken's crazy kicks? Safest special move for some chip damage maybe?

Does Ken have his standing kick variations in HD Remix? I haven't played in a while now. I remember that in Capcom v SNK 2, his Rib Smasher was a safe, high priority move, with good range that did awesome guard damage. Otherwise, I always thought that his kicks were sort of worthless.

They're also overhead attacks, which I guess is nice, but they don't chip and are slow on startup, I think. One of them knocks the opponent down, so it sets them up for a crossup, I suppose.

he can do some crazy combos. like against fei long...
crossup j.mk - c.mk - qcf+mk(hold) - c.hk

i think it dizzies.
other than that, qcf+mk is your replacement in combos for fireballs, you can do some weird unreliable deadbody crossup with qcf+hk, and it's your overhead, so there's not much.

I'm getting it on the PS3 (don't have 360). Already preordered from deepdiscount. Hopefully the online play is improved over the HDR online play. Goddamn, so many glitches and lost connections, starting to irk me.

btw, I think I want to move back to Chun-li for STHDR. However, I'm having some trouble, especially in the anti-air dept. Mostly against Blanka and the jump in RH from shotos. Since I've been playing Guile, I usually charge down-back. Should I use the vertical whirlwind kick when playing as Chun-li? It just doesn't seem as reliable as a flash, srk or tiger upper. Also seems like a straight jump up RH is better, though if I'm in charging position to block sweeps or low hits, a vertical ww kick comes out often. Anyone got any tips for Remix Chun?

I tried the normal spinning bird kick, but it's hard to land. And to catch someone in the air, I have to know for sure they're jumping in and execute it early since the startup is crap. I'll experiment with it more. So far it could be used as a late/delayed crossup. Though it feels like I could easily get hit out of it.

Just be sure to not do any fireballs if he's in double kick range, since IIRC he can just block and punish the recovery depending on which fireball it is. You can jab shoryu through it too, but the timings kinda annoying.

yeay, storing Oicho is still in HD Remix.

if ppl dont know, storing is doing a motion on the joypad, and holding down the last directional input as a means to delay the punch/kick input to finish the move's execution.

so for example, u can do a QCF but hold down forward and you'll keep walking forward... then press punch and you'll throw out a fireball. (not a real example btw... jus a conceptual one)

with Honda u can do the Oicho motion into a low block, then while guarding u can mash punch and when a window of opportunity comes up you'll magically Oicho the opponent.

If you want a game where you can jump in any time and play a few rounds, then it doesn't get much better than this, especially if you consider online multiplayer. If you like unlocking things and having a sense of completion, then you're better off investing time elsewhere.

'Clops is good cause of his Anti-Air assist.

I play just about everyone in Marvel. i fucking love that game.

The team is play competitively with is Sentinel, Cable and Captain Commando.

I remember that I was obsessed, making themed teams and figuring out good hyper chains. This was all before I really really knew how to play, but I would have so much fun switching between different teams. I just really liked the idea of such an enormous crossover. I played pretty much everyone. Hell, I'd play as Roll against a friend in order to have a severe handicap.

Seems like the guy has never played Def Jam: FFNY, because it has what he's looking for: story, interactive arenas, and body injuries.

God, that game was so much fun. It was a cross between a wrestling game and a MMA game, but it was just really well done. Conceptually, it sounds stupid, but when they put it together, they really went all out on it. It's not a competent competitive fighter or whatever, but it was accessible to any type of gamer and it was so much damn fun. Perhaps most importantly, it was incredibly refined/polished. I still have fond memories of it.

Which?

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/87/243726254_10cbacfeba_o.jpg

Funny thing about this stick I bought. I have some history with it.

This stick is extremely limited. It has never been on eBay and has probably been on Yahoo Auctions Japan a handful of times(it always ends around $240+).

Hori originally released both a Hori Real Arcade Special Addition (SAnwa) and Hori Real Arcade Pro Special Edition (SEimitsu) shortly after the launch of the Hori Real Arcade Pro (original one).

At E3 2005 in Kentia Hall, Hori had one on display. By this time, the stick was already sold out/long gone from its one time release (Horistore.com exclusive; was never on Play-Asia or NCSX; I kept hoping it would be though)... I tried LONG and HARD to get the US Hori reps to sell me that stick. They weren't budging saying it is a Japan only limited edition/only one they have/etc etc.

So time goes on. I still look for it. Never found it.

I find out via Hori that less than 400 or so were made. Many of which were used for press/marketing.

Famitsu poll had this controller voted for/nominated as one of the greatest controllers of all time.

The legend continues...

Fast forward to first week of 2009.

Someone tipped me off on the deal. I contact the seller.

Guess who it was? Mr. Hori US rep. Awesome. Deal done.

Happy MarkMan.

:)

In a few days I'll give it my FULLLLLLL REVIEW!!!!!!! (it'll probably be after CES..)

I still have to do my detailed writeup on the SFIV arcade sticks lol.

It seriously always bugged me that the game wasn't backwards compatible on the 360. Now that it's dirt cheap, maybe I should snag a copy on the PS2. I'd be buying it more for sentimental value, considering that I'm not sure I feel like starting characters from scratch again.

Also, I've never EVER seen a game let you so meticulously design your own fighting style without forcing you to go through the drudgery of choosing movesets. When you picked primary and secondary fighting styles, there was an obvious blend that was unique for you. Did you guys know that there were about six or so specific styles available depending on which combo of Martial Arts and secondary style you chose? Like, you could get Drunken Master, Kung fu, Tiger Claw, Crane... it was really ridiculous. Even more ridiculous that it was in a game featuring rappers beating the crap out of each other.

why do people always bring up bodily injuries as a way to evolve fighters? seems like a step towards realism, which is not what fighters need to become more fun.

I think you just answered your own question. Oftentimes people forget that realism does not necessarily mean fun or a good game, and is sometimes a crutch that developers use to not have to come up with genuinely innovative gameplay mechanics. Sometimes realism works and sometimes it doesn't, but most people consider it "advancing gaming."

So SFIV has Akuma AND Shen Long (yeah, I'm late)??? Does Shen Long play differently than a standard shoto at least? From the few gameplay videos I've seen (but I'm sure that many posters here would be able to tell you from hands on experience), Shen Long, or rather Gouken as he's called in SF4, has a ground dual Hadouken (one travels forward and one anti-air), a vertical rising Tatsumaki Sempuu Kyaku, and Shin Shoryuken.

cable, and ditch ryu for magneto!

That was the first team I started playing real people with,

Magneto, Cable, clops! In projectile, AA,AA assists!

I don't think I have magneto unlocked.

I hate how there is no moves list.

Ryu is pimp, and so is Clops. You should go Cable, since they have like, the same move list. All three of them.

Will do. I just now figured out thanks to gamefaqs that you have to hit the buttons twice to get out the medium punch? Odd.....

I can't figure out any of the supers other than the giant 3 man one. Is ryu's not the same as in ST?

Mr. Beef
01-08-2009, 12:20 AM
Naw. Everyone's supers are done with one motion and two punches or kicks, whatever is usually required. Everyone also has like, 3 supers. And most of those supers can be done in the air.

MAHVEL, BABY.

Shit, game is deep. I guess I'll have to brave a wall of text gamefaqs faq and figure this out.

Or go to shoryuken...

I don't like the hitting the button twice thing, that will take forever to get used to.

I'm gonna be fucked next time I play HDREMIX lol.

If you're using Cyclops or Ryu or Cable, most basic super to use is QCF+Light+Hard punch. Shit will get you out of most jams.

I've played a couple of fighting games here and there, but I've never been big on them.

I bought the SF anniversary collection for PS2.
Maybe it's 'cause I'm a noob, but am I the only one that has trouble pulling off combos when I'm on the player 2 side?

starting off with fighters, playing on 2P side takes some getting use to. just get comfortable with 1P side then slowly you'll get better at 2P side... just don't force yourself to be on the left side when ur opponent switches sides.

Has there been any recent news on KoF XII? I would be more excited about it, but I'm sort of disappointed at the roster. I know they're making new HD sprites, but XI had so many chars. Maybe they'll surprise us with a multitude of unlockable characters. Still hoping for K' and Elizabeth.

So like... I played Street Fighter IV (final version) for like 4 hours straight today.

This game has set a new standard for presentation (fighting game wise).

WOW.
Quick question, without revealing anything that would break any NDAs(and therefore, get you in trouble.), would you say that SFIV has enough for the offline gamer(like me) to justify a day 1 purchase?

There really hasn't been much revealed about the additional modes for the home version, other than what the PS3 trophies spoiled. I know you said that you don't usually play 1P in fighting games, but I was just wondering if anything caught your eye while you were playing it.8-)

Didn't Relento post the trophies that can be unlocked. I remember it being fairly lengthy.

As for the rest of offline mode, I think that depends on whether you have someone to actually play with.
