I hope the Cross Battle Adapter is lagless. I was going to dual mod my SFIV TE stick, but if it works, I'll get one of those. I would like one of those 360 Fightpads too, so then I could use it on PS3 and 360 no problem.

XvSF was sort of a must buy--I guess I had to have as many of those Saturn fighters as I could find/afford. :p
The SFIV producer teased the possibility of another CvSNKP game, but I'd rather have the more impossible to happen MvC game. :p

Wow, like 8 posts in a minute. Question: Is there any reason to pick up Vampire Savior on the Saturn over the PS2 compilation? Like, are there remixed soundtracks or anything kewl?
All I know is Saturn with the RAM cart was always more beastly at 2D/frames than the PS2--especially for arcade perfect fighters. Haven't played the PS2 compilation myself, so I couldn't say if there was any reason to pick the PS2 version beyond it having all the games on one disc.

I haven't had a chance to play any Saturn games that use the 4M cart, but I'm hoping to in the near future. I really haven't had a chance to give this system much play time yet, and that makes me so terribly sad. Heck, I don't even have any fighters right now... just Mega Man 8, MMX4, Galactic Attack, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, and Silhouette Mirage. That's not nearly hardcore enough.
But soon...

I was totally out of the Saturn loop... all I had at the time was my PC version of X-Men: COTA!
I have no idea how arcade-accurate the game was... all I remember was that you needed to install a patch to get chain combos to work. Oh and the arcade code to use Akuma was in. Best thing about that version now is that it used Redbook audio, so all the music tracks are right there on the CD!

I played both the Saturn VS and VS on the PS2 Vampire Collection. They are pretty damn close, though the Saturn version has the English option, with (ugh) white blood. So I always played it in Japanese. The Saturn version of VS, meaning, the closest one to it character and gameplay wise, not the actual Saturn version, is unlockable in the Vampire Collection.
VC runs in 480p too, so it looks pretty good.

X-Men COTA was the first fighting game I saw in arcades that wasn't Street Fighter II. It was easily like... the coolest fucking game ever. Seriously, what an awesome concept... just make a buncha X-Men characters fight, but also make the game fun. I remember the arcade cab that the game was playing on was one of those with a big screen TV and it was pretty awesome, especially since I was a stupid kid at the time who didn't know that TVs could be made that big.

So if you could only have one version of the game. Like, some dude says "hey man, I'm taking one of these two games from you, and I'll kill you if you try and pull a fast one..." which one? I don't really care about having all the other DS games that aren't as good, either.
As much as I like compilations of old school games, I hate unlocking games within the game. Just let me play it when I want! :p

You must have loved Sonic Gems Collection:
Bare Knuckle (aka Street of Rage) play SGC for a total of 12 hours and play Bonanza Bros once or play any combination of any other game at least 30 times.
Bare Knuckle 2 (aka Street of Rage 2) play SGC for a total of 12 hours and play Bare Knuckle once or play any combination of any other game at least 50 times.
Bare Knuckle 3 (aka Street of Rage 3) play SGC for a total of 12 hours and play Bare Knuckle 2 once or play any combination of any other game at least 70 times.
Bonanza Bros. play SGC for a total of 12 hours, play Vectorman 2 once or play any combination of any other game at least 20 times.
Vectorman play SGC for a total of 5 hours or have a Sonic Mega Collection save file in your memory card.
Vectorman 2 play SGC for a total of 7 hours and play Vectorman once.
I think there was another Sega compilation... maybe the original Sonic Mega Collection... that actually required you to have a save file for Sonic Heroes to unlock a game at all. There was no other way. I think it was Comix Zone, so no big loss, but still. Ridiculous.

Hmm, well, The Vampire Collection is $25 on Play Asia. That's pretty cheap. And I can play it in 480p and use PS2 sticks on it. But I do have many fond memories of the Saturn version. Give me a few days and I'll compare them fully and let you know, if you are curious. I don't have access to my PS2 or Saturn at the moment.
And as far as unlocking things, I just DL'd a save, because I'm impatient.

I think that Marvel Super Heroes had the collapsible floors again, but the VS games didn't.
Value-wise, I'd think the PS2 version would be better if you don't already have a PS2 to Saturn adapter for your sticks (assuming you don't have a Saturn stick). I'd think you'd have to be a frame/pixel counter to really care which version, but again, the Saturn was made for 2D arcade conversions, while the PS2 is generally just emulation bolstered by brute force processing power (I think).
Also, I already went with the Saturn version before the compilation was available and prefer Savior enough where I don't think I'd get much use out of playing all the different versions, so I'm biased.

XvSF has one stage with the collapasible floor (the one where you're fighting on the street with cops around, it collapses into a sewer.)
By far the coolest was Spiral's though... it could break like 3 times if I remember correctly.
BustaUppa
01-19-2009, 05:51 PM
yeeeeeah Spiral's was dope.
MK3 then had a similar effect with their breakable CEILINGS. I feel like that had more of an "oh shit!" factor the first time you saw it, but it didn't really blend into the gameplay in any meaningful way (other than breaking a combo after a launcher, which they fixed in UMK3).
Floor breaking mechanics of Marvel + the audiovisual "impact" of MK3 would be sick! I always thought a stage where you shatter through a glass floor (loudly!) would be neat. I guess DOA has sorta kept this tradition alive, huh? I remember DOA:U having a decent amount of "changing" stages... throwing someone out of that cathedral window was sick!!

There was also a stage with a collapsible floor in marvel superheroes vs streetfighter. I don't remember who's it was, but you fell from a street into a sewer.

Not worth the time to boot up the game unless you are a die hard X-Men fan and must play just to play. Same way I feel about most of the PS1 Dragon Ball games.

X-Men: Mutant Academy 2 had a few neat secret characters. One being Spider-Man, and another Professor X who had some wacky moves with his wheel chair. A neat little tid-bit: if Prof. X tries to do a mind grab against Juggernaut it doesn't work and Juggs decks him in the face and he rolls back. That was kinda cool.

The Sonic Heroes save was the easy way of unlocking Comix Zone (and The Ooze) in Sonic Mega Collection Plus (PS2/Xbox). The hard way of unlocking Comix Zone, and I know this from first-hand experience was to play through every initial Genesis title in the collection 50 times EACH. Even though a "play" counts as at least seeing the Sega screen and quitting, it is quite a tedious process, as there is no visible record showing how many times you played each game, which means that you would have to keep track by hand. The only general rule you got during this process was the other unlockable games, which were unlocked by playing a certain single or duo of games 20 or 30 times each (As seen in the Copy/Paste below from GameFAQs, though Ristar is an exception, since it is unlocked by playing the other unlocked games, rather than the initially available games).
The Japanese GameCube version (Remember, Sega cut CZ and TO out of the US GC release to maintain an E rating) had a much easier process for Comix Zone and The Ooze: Just enter a button combination at a certain menu to unlock the game.
Blue Sphere Play Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 3d Blast 20 times each.
comix zone Play the Genesis games 50 times
Flicky Play Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine 30 times.
Knuckles in Sonic 2 Play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Spinball 20 times each.
Ristar Play Blue Sphere, Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Flicky 30 times each.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles Play Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles 20 times each.
The Ooze Unlock Knuckles in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Blue Spheres, and Flicky

And that's AFTER buying a new Elite 360, 2 x Wii Fits and some games! :bouncy:

Mmmhmmm... that Carerra is a nice car. My dad's got one and he won't let me drive it very often, so I should probably just steal it one of these days.
But Mayng, do you really need a new TV? I mean, you've got an XBR2 as it is, right? I don't think that's outdated enough to ditch already (although I do quite like my new plasma.)
Personally, if I were to spend the money rather than save it, I'd do the down payment on the car, but it depends on what car.

MM, I say a car. You got enough games.
I just spent a good $1700 on my car. I hate car problems.bahhh dude I literally had to just ditch my car in the first parking lot I could find today. Thing does NOT handle well in the snow... I was a hazard to everything around me! And I'm in this annoying twilight period where I'm REALLY close to picking up a new car, so it's pointless for me to just buy new tires NOW, ya know?
Anyway, funner things...like busta said, I think the coolest level breaks still go to UMK3. It somehow has that sense of being a badass more than the capcom games. Tekken 6 now has em, so there's something to look forward to.Fun fact - the n64 version of MK Trilogy "connected" Goro's Lair, The Armory, and The Kombat Tomb to form a three-story stage. It was a rare bit of polish in a wildly unpolished game!

If there's one thing DoA has had right, besides mammories, it's level breaks. Those shits were so impressive in DoA2. It made Tekken 3 look (i mean graphically, before you all get crazy) like a grandma with flaccid boobies.

lol, bustauppa, I love your sig gif. Poor Jeff Hardy.
I too enjoyed the wall breaking in DoA. I wish they'd bring DoA to the PS3.
Also, last night, I landed my first touch of death combo with dictator. Even though it was against a meager opponent, it felt so awesome. I'm really liking Bison the more I play him. All the little additions to his game are perfect. Though I wish Bison had a solid ground anti-air. But that would probably make him broken. Also can't wait for SF4, just under a month away!

DOA4
Guilty Gear: Reload
MK vs. DC
SC1
SC4
SF: Remix
SF: HF
SS2
VF5
UMK3
soon: SF4, Tekken 6
others too

Guilty Gear Judgment fixed the turn button problem that was in the other GG side-scroller mode (boost mode?) 4 player battles just proved that you can't just make a 2 player fighter a 4 player fighter.

Around here it was always like "Dude, my friend's uncle's lawyer's janitor's stepchild is a mailroom boy at Capcom USA and he said SF3 was gonna be 4 players with fatalities."Hahaha, well there was a Street Fighter Rainbow Edition hack at a local collectibles store... it had an amaterish "Street Fighter III" marquee made up for it, in a generic font. The guy at the store reassured me that this REALLY was, in fact, the real Street Fighter III, and for some reason I accepted this as gospel truth (despite the actual title screen clearly reading "Street Fighter II"). I like called a bunch of my friends and told them about it afterwards, lol.
I also flipped when I saw screenshots of UMK3... they showed one of a 2 vs. 2 match, and I flipped because I assumed it was actual 4-player gameplay (instead of just an "endurance match" type of deal).

Alpha 3 had it. In the PS1 version you could only use certain characters. Like Ryu, Ken, and one other or Juli, Juni, and one other. The DC version let you use any 3.

I remember playing that mode, but I forgot if it was in Alpha, or not.You are a correct... they called it "Dramatic Battle" in Alpha 3. You had a limited selection of characters (I think you had to pick a Ryu/Ken team of Juli/Juni) and you would do a series of survivor matches. I forget if this was single player, two-player, or both... it might have changed between the PS1 and Dreamcast home versions.
They actually had a version of this in the arcade version of Alpha ONE, accessible via some sort of code. Two human players would fight Bison simultaneously, and I think the game just ended after that.

I'm not hurting for another stick. I do however play a lot of fighting games so I figured that the TE would last me this generation of systems when it comes to arcade sticks.

So, I thought I was a pretty good chun player.
Then I go in this player match and this guy shows up playing Ken and Akuma, mostly.
Cross up medium kick with Ken, then duck light kicks into fierce DP.
I have no fucking idea how Chun can counter that crossup medium kick except not be near it. It was 90% of what he did and I won about half the time but it was always frustrating as fuck. Any tips?
Her normal AA neutral jump LK, standing MP, standing MK, or jump neutral HK did nothing. I tried not to be in that situation, but he was so fucking good at that shenanigan that I was locked down half the time. He wasn't even using Knee traps, just that fucking move over and over..

Yeah I thought but when that jump in MK hits so far behind in a cross up, even if I guess right and block the opossite way, he's doing low LKs rapid fire and I'm locked down again.
Unless I have a few frames for reversal there, but it seemed almost instant after that jump in hits.
And upkicks get eaten because that MK has such a weird, forward extending hitbox. If I was able to back up, chun's standing MK might counter it, but it might be even trade and he's right back at the distance to jump in again.

Yeah I thought but when that jump in MK hits so far behind in a cross up, even if I guess right and block the opossite way, he's doing low LKs rapid fire and I'm locked down again.
Unless I have a few frames for reversal there, but it seemed almost instant after that jump in hits.
Well, I'm about to head out for a couple hours.. but if you want later, you can pick Ken and I'll pick Chun and I'll try to figure it out.

Thx, I was going to go into practice mode and check out the hitboxes exactly later.
It's just so, so frustrating when you think you're good against a character and then someone destroys you with shenanigans like that over and over again.
I still suck against vega. I need to learn how to counter his wall jumps and stuff. He's such a goofy character.
On the plus side I have a much better time against Guile and Blanka now.

For chun, I think you'd have to do her spinning bird kick (charge back, forward + kick). She has invincibility frames on it, moreso than the up kicks, and it gets her out further horizontally. You should be able to do it since it seems all he did was jump in and attack at the same depth and time.
The best thing to do though is to avoid a knockdown with proper spacing and zoning with her fb. I've always had trouble once I was knocked down as a charge character.

yeah true, most of those succeeded best when he was coming in on a knockdown.

And once the jumping opponent crosses your axis, would all your forward charge time then count towards your "back" charge, allowing you to hit the new forward position + attack immediately?
Or would your old charge be disregarded once the axis flips? In that case I guess your only option would be to charge back, normally, then just try and piano your attack and hope it registers as soon as the axis flips (turning your back charge into a forward input)?
It's hard to explain what I'm asking but I hope I'm doing a decent job!

You know, I'm not exactly sure about that. I'm pretty sure that the player doesn't turn around instantly once someone crosses up. And I'm not entirely sure the defending player loses their horizontal charge instantly. I'm thinking they lose it once the attacking player lands behind them, but I'd like to test this out.
If you do lose your horizontal charge because of the crossup, I'd think the only solution would be to down charge and try to get your vertical spinning kick out. The timing of the vertical is a lot harder though. The invincible frames aren't as great as the horizontal one. You could always walk forward, but you can't do so when you are knocked down and they are crossing up on your wake up.
If someone more familiar with the ST system can enlighten us, that would be cool.
Though what I usually do with Sagat after a knockdown, I simply jump behind them as they get up. I notice that almost all the time they score a reversal, their vertical attack is facing the same way they get up. So I would assume horizontal charge is preserved a good couple of frames after the attacking player lands.
If this is the case, you can either SBK out or if they land behind you early, mash reversal throw.

Yeah, it was online so there's really no commitment at all. Interestingly, the site said that the stick could ship as soon as February 3rd, which'd be ballin', but I duno if that's really going to happen. Though it'd be nice.
I dunno, though... I figured that I like Remix enough that I'd get my money's worth from that game alone, and factoring in the upcoming stuff like Blaz Blue and KOF XII, I'm definitely going to get a lot of use out of the stick outside of SF IV. It's still tough to drop that much $$ on a controller, but eh... looking at the release calendar, there's not a whole lot to save that money for anyway... after playing stuff like Far Cry 2, I'm starting to realize that really, you're better off not listening to reviews when your gut tells you something's amiss.
hankmecrankme
01-22-2009, 06:08 PM
Reviews are definitely just an opinion of a game's quality, not fact by any means. Once you know that, and you realize that most reviewers either hate on games for no reason or suck off games that don't deserve it, the better off you will be. I trust my friends more than any pro reviewer.
I know what I like. Well, I should after gaming for this long. So I usually just trust my instincts, watch videos, and try to gleam FACTS from reviews as well as opinions, but I don't let a bad review completely damn a game. I can do that myself. ;)
Also, TE stick will be so worth it when I'm using it on like every fighter. PC support too, don't forget that. It's the best PC and 360 stick you can buy without having to go custom. I'll be playing some Melty Blood Act Cadenza Ver. B on it for sho'.

I was thinking.. how can an arcade stick work as an analog stick? I thought an arcade stick is all or nothing.. like you move the stick far enough to the right, and [Right] registers. It can't be used on games that actually require the precision of an analog stick right, to do wave-type motions I mean? Like let's say for example.. Rez?

What I do love about it (and thanks for this Markman) is that you basically don't have to do anything to it to have the thing up to spec. Like, the HRAP 3's buttons suck. They're really, really bad. And while it's not difficult, it's kinda annoying to have to buy new buttons from the get go and swap 'em out. I'm glad I don't hafta do that here.
Also, hank, if you're playing MB online, you'll lose to me again, even with a better stick. You may be able to destroy me at SFII, but you don't stand a chance when Nvnqsrsrs is involved!!!!

Alright, it might be a bit harsh, but I really don't like the feel of them. we would have liked a little more resistance from the buttons to really let our tactile senses know that we were giving the controller all of our fury.
This complain in their review is why I'll buy the thing. You don't want resistance - you want the fucking thing to work; that's what almost every pad in the last decade has gotten wrong.

/shrug, their opinions were noted though.
I don't know if anyone noticed, our buttons on the FightPad are slightly larger than that on current gen controllers. This gives it better spacing AND more room to hit. Feels much more natural than trying to cramp your fingers to a confined space.
Works well for thumb style or claw style players.
And I didn't post this here yet, I don't think, but here is a size comparison for the FightPads...

Yipes commentary is only half good (last half) in that video :)
Sorry if I'm 'cade stick nazi, but I can't see trying to do Abel's shit in SFIV without looking like a complete tard-bot on a pad. Especially Cr. FP---->Ultra
i dunno how anybody will do fadc ultra on pad especially stock system pads.
when i do it with stick i use my middle finger and thumb on the mp and mk and have pointer/middle/ring ready to ultra. how the hell do you do that on pad?
and i know switching from multi button stuff like teching throws to ex whatever will be a bitch.
haha, i'm just thinking ahead on how i will play if my local gamestop has a sf4 midnight launch tourney thing and we are forced to use the stock pads for whatever system the game is played on. i don't wanna be forced to doing jump in hk to crouching hk all night haha.

Yeah, hopefully. Lately I've been having problems just connecting, or getting booted out of parties and games. I think I might need to upgrade this cheapass router I have.
Your Router is the king of all routers.

The first time I play this game is probably gonna be when the console version launches, haha!

Like 3S

sf4 multi button mechanics are
throw = lp + lk
focus = mp + mk
taunt = hp + hk
ex = any 2 punch/kick depending on special move
ultra = super special move + 3 punch/kick depending on special move (except for i think akuma)
so yeah i have no idea how people will play sf4 on the stock pad without macros for certain actions unless they got some crazy matrix coordination. :P

I need to learn how to keek that sonofabeetch VEGAs ASS
SO HORD!
I am absolutely worthless as Chun against Vega. On the ground, I can keep up. I can usually shut them down, but once the wall jump shenanigans start, I'm so confused about where I can hit him, where I'll get air thrown, and all that.
And I'm learning quickly that my main overall weakness is dealing with wakeup pressure and jump ins. That's where I take most of my damage as chun.

it's the tournament legal edition Tekken 2 so yes.
Mr. Beef

As a Tony Hawk user, the one thing that stops Vega's wall jump shit (if he does it on the opposite wall) is jumping jab. It stays out there until I land, and it snuffs everything Vega tries to do. Same wall? I have no clue.
Think you can find a move of Chun's like that that stays out there forever?

So I got back home about an hour ago, and I was hoping that my Saturn S-video cables would've shown up, but they're not here. Bummer. I was totally gonna play some Mega Man 8. So I'm like "dang, what should I do now?" Well, I grabbed that copy of Marvel Vs Capcom 1 off the shelf, cracked it open, and started playing it. Now, I was expecting something that was different from MVC2, but holy shit - this is like completely different. I mean, it's got the same signature zaniness that MVC2 has, but I dunno... it just plays way different, and I really like it. I don't like using the Tekken stick, because I've become accustomed to nicer buttons and I hate this stick, but whatcha gonna do? Good enough.
Now I just need some pizza and I'll lather my Tekken stick in grease, for that authentic arcade experience.

If that gets you to past the first past of the tourney why not? :)
IMO, SFIV is going to be hell for people learning it on pad. Again maybe that's because I'm so accustomed to sticks but like akuma001, I can't fathom how you can play SFIV on any pad period and not want to throw something.
Give Fantiq a call about pad play akuma001! haha

As a pad scrub, I can't fathom playing on a stick. But I guess that's mainly because I never really did any kind of arcade-hopping in my youth.

Sticks, mang. Love 'em. Playing in the arcades growing up, I always wanted a good console stick. I've used so many shitty ass ones that I basically went pad only for a long time. I always wanted a Mas stick because it used real arcade quality parts and not the cheap shit we always ended up receiving. So I used pads for the longest time, until the Namco stick for PS1 came out and I snagged one. It was really excellent quality, but I sucked on it, since I used pads for so long. It wasn't until I got a Dreamcast and MvC that I realized I needed a stick, so I got the green goblin Agetec stick. I used it so much that I plain wore it out. I got a PS to DC adapter after that and put my Namco stick to work some more.
Now, I can use a pad to play still, but I much prefer a stick. :)
One of these days, I'll finish my DC Green Goblin mod. It still needs a paint thinner bath to remove all of the fucked up paint on it. Other than that, it's ready to go.

Looks like we're going to have to pay extra (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14490962&postcount=4553) for ANY alt, costumes for SFIV.:roll::roll:
Make it cheap, Capcom and I'll consider it.
Also, a rumor going around is that the C.E. will have credits to download your choice of any five alt. costumes.

fuck that as well, but I honestly don't mind too much. It's something I'd actually pay for though I don't see the point.
I will though be wasting a ton of money on DLC for Tekken 6.

I did play it a couple times when I was at Pizza Hut like... a decade ago. But yeah, I really do think I prefer MVC 1 based on what little I've played so far. But I'm just really impressed that these are totally different games... I was expecting like a SFA to SFA2 sort of progression, but it's more dramatic than that (well, and unlike the SFA series, MVC1 is good...)
Also, Mad Catz needs to send one of those sticks to Honestgamers so I can review it. Bah, whatever.
